I'm not sure if this would be achievable, but maybe reading books from authors of color and going to a restaurant and eating the food they mention in there? Like reading Crying in H Mart and going to a Korean restaurant or eating Korean food. Some people can't do this because of food allergies, preferences, and intolerances, so sorry if this is a bad suggestion 😅😅 also, edited: Please Kayla feel free to interpret my suggestion however you like! Do this with any culture or region.
I have food allergies and I think it’s a great idea! Even if you have to get a little creative with the food, I think it’d be a great way to explore more of the culture of the book you’re reading!
Kaylaaaaaa this is honestly one of my favorite vlogs you’ve ever done. The vibes were immaculate. I can see myself comfort rewatching this over and over again. I loved the bonus element of the cute pajamas and seeing you all enjoying nature so much really makes me want to go outside more. Love love loved this vlog 💖💖💖
Another fun one would be reading cozies about different foods and making/eating food from there or doing an activity related to that culture If that makes sense.
Kayla if you see this: the world is so overwhelming and heavy and constant but your videos that show bits of your adventures, mundane moments (and exciting ones!) and like this vlog, surprising your family with sleeping on a boat and all of those fun activites that you plan (for your family and your viewers) is so comforting. Your such a cool mom and a caring person and an incredible content creator. Thank you
49:21 for soggy pie bottoms I might have a trick. It’s a tip that I saw a chemist show on a cooking segment on TV once and the few times I’ve done that I avoided soggy pies/quiches. Usually when you prepare a pie they advise to preheat the oven. So once your crust is in the baking tin, put it in the oven like 5-10 minutes to pre-bake it. After that, the tip is to coat it with egg white (1 egg white should do for an average pie). Put it back in the oven for +_5 minutes. It’s done when the eggwhite is « dry ». It’s going to create a coat like a varnish if you will, between the porous crush and the oftentimes liquid filling. At the end of your recipe when your pie bakes, if you start to notice that the sides of your pie are turning brown (which it could because it has already been baked a little) just put parchment/baking paper / aluminium foil on top of it :) Hope it helps !
You could get those "cold case" folders and solve one with Rob and Liam, or go to an escape room (idk if you can film there though so maybe an escape room board game?) Maybe you could listen o a true crime podcast, watch a true crime documentary? Like make the next theme a deep dive into recreational mystery solving like those themed dinner parties where you could even CREATE the mystery based on all your reading knowledge for Liam and rob to solve
A lot of them typical have recipes in the back and I’m here for you doing a mystery book and mystery bake/cook and enjoying it with the fam! Could tell us who’s got the best mystery and best recipe!
I think the pocket on the fancy pajamas is perfect for glasses. Like “I’m gonna read a little before bed, let me get my reading glasses real quick.” Idk 🤓😅😅
I generally find most cozies are 2.5-4 stars across the board for me, averaging around 3.5 No cozy is going to be my favorite book despite it being my most read genre this year. I just enjoy the process of reading them even tho none of them are my next favorites 🤷♀️video idea: Most culinary cozies have a section in the back for recipes… maybe try making one from each?
You could do mystery apps, mystery games, mystery boxes, mystery series (I'm obsessed with only murders in the building). Anyways, I'm so excited about the continuation of this series from you!!! 🥰🥰
I love this series. The close relationship between the two heroine characters with their banter makes the dialogue fun. Throughout the series you get peeks into their exciting and unusual backstory.
I know at this point this is an older video but I just wanted to say that I am trying out the cozy mystery genre for the first time because of you and Alexandra Roselyn and I am loving it! I’m reading A Deadly Inside Scoop and Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies because of your recommendations and I’m having a really good time! I enjoy horror and thrillers like you so I trust your judgment! Thanks for opening the door to a new genre for me! 💜
I absolutely loved this vlog. The beautiful scenery (That boat! The bridge - Whoa!). Pie Baking (What!!). Good stories (I'll try A Deadly Inside Scoop). I witnessed good vibes throughout this post. Thank you for sharing!
This was such a nice video, between the content, the views, and the looks lol. The pajama thing was a fun idea, as well as the different locations -- my brain really likes the compartmentalization of it all.
I stress read cozy mysteries all through my 30’s, and I would say that there are a variety of categories. Some I have decided on are: librarians, small business owners (antiques store, knitting, book store), B & B or hospitality, renovations, pet/animal (the cat who, the pet sitter series), paranormal (main character talks to/sees ghosts or visions), historical (I love the Dame Frevisse series from Margaret Frazier), caterers/bakers. I will probably think of 5 more in 10 minutes. I think my all time favourite is Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. So good!
I love cozy mysteries! I've been reading them for years! For a renovation type cozy mystery, you should check out the The Fixer-Upper Mystery series by Kate Carlisle. The protagonist is a contractor and all of the books mentions the renovations her company is working on.
Love, love, love this comforting vlog! I feel like I can just rewatch this again when I'm feeling down. Also, you have the most BEAUTIFUL eyes I've ever seen!
Laura Childs Tea Shop Murder Mysteries. She is up to 26 of them. Theo owns a tea shop and she just seems to stumble upon dead bodies. Recipes are included as is a little romance and history of tea. Lots of tea shop gossip among the locals. Just good, clean fun. Always get hungry reading the books. I have re-read them twice over the last 6 years but am now focusing on getting up to date. I am on book 13. Just wanted to add that I am old enough to be your grandma (60) I am sure, but just love your videos. I think my favorite to date is where you bought a new car, oh you had me laughing.
This vlog is so comforting! I've been getting more into my cozies too. I listened to A Quiet Life in the Country on audio and the narrator was amazing! She added so much personality to a fun, cozy read. Definitely putting Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies on my library holds list!
Your vlogs give me life! I love the noodle house shop mysteries. They are quick, cute, easy reads. They get a little more fun as the series goes on. Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies looks like so much fun. Adding to my never ending tbr.
This was amazing as always. Your ideas are always ten times more creative as anything I could come up with! Maybe you could convince Rob and Liam to set up a sort of mystery scavenger hunt type thing you for you to solve. They could give you a new clue every time you finish the book until you solve the mystery?
This was such an entertaining vlog, the pajamas, scenery, vibe, everything. Living in the desert right now made me also very envious of all the water and beautiful scenery.
I love love love seeing you travel in your vlogs, you guys always choose such beautiful and unique locations to holiday! It really adds something special to your videos that no one else is doing quite the same
This was such a good vlog! It really put a smile on my face. I have been getting into cozy mysteries lately, and I'm also trying to find what's my "thing" for them. I also enjoyed A Deadly Inside Scoop and gave it the same rating. The series is really cute, and it doesn't blow me away, but its just really comforting and nice. I would love to see you try out the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, I LOVED that series in college and Finlay Donovan kind of gave me similar vibes, they're a good time!
I'm late to this one, but I do have to say I smiled through this entire video. It was just all the vibes ❤ My favorite part was your reaction to baking pie. 😊 You did it! You're amazing! You get all the bragging rights! I just loved how happy that made you.
*The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie* - Romance and humor, it’s an easy fast paced classic I love 🤗 *An Untimely Death by Blyth Baker* - A newer cozy mystery series about a maid, sounds like the first book you read but has a cute romance and just gets better as series goes on. All shorter books.
i haven’t read it yet so i can’t actually recommend it but renovated to death by frank anthony polito is a recent queer cozy mystery about renovating a house! this was such a wonderful video! the concepts, the content were just delightful. it put me in such a good mood! definitely one of my favorite vlogs of yours 🥰
Loved seeing all those locations. I'm originally from Vancouver so it was awesome to see some footage from there, and from Campbell River. I lived on Vancouver Island (Nanaimo) for many years as well before moving to the States. My new term when I make pie filling will forever be "innards" ! You cracked me up with that! LOL Definitely going to pick up Magic, Lies and Deadly Pies! Great vlog! xx
I'm not sure if you're doing another cozy mystery vlog, but a popular South African cozy mystery / food related series is the Tannie Maria series by Sally Andrews. Every book incorporates South African cuisine because the main character is a Agony Aunt writer that believe food solves people's problems (but is also a detective on the side!). I haven't read it yet, but the reviews are favourable! The first book (Recipes for Love and Murder: A Tannie Maria Mystery) is released earlier this year as a series adaptation.
Need to comment on your reaction to your pie!! YAAAASSSS that is what baking is all about! I was a devout NOT a Baker and pandemic+Babies happened and now it’s one of my most beloved past times. I adore cooking a meal because it’s loosey goosey, but the moment when you try a new bake and it turns out exactly as you hoped and also tastes amazing it’s unmatched in hobbying for me. Plus having something I made from scratch to share with my loved ones brings me untold bouts of joy. So thank you for sharing that moment with us made me get teary eyed because Same. So proud every time.
Loved the video, super fun! My favourite part was your little "they're nautical, for my boat!" About your pyjamas. Celebrate the small things in life! For the mystery thing for next video, maybe have your books inspire your outfits?
I've been making pies for over five decades and, if that was your first pie, I'm so impressed! Also, it never occurred to me to grate my cold butter - brilliant idea!!! If you want a cozy mystery series that's LOL funny, you might give Donna Andrews a try.
Shout out to Liam for being awesome and helping his mom with the lighting. Also, the first book's vlog has me wanting to buy new PJs. I really loved this vlog, but by the end (thanks to having to pause for dogs to go out and take a call) I forgot which ones were higher and lower ratings. I guess I'll go back and check.
I know you typically don't pick up books with elderly characters, but what you described you felt was missing from the Lady Hardcastle book I really think you will find in the The Thursday Murder Club!!! Especially the audiobooks. They're endearing and hilarious and it's a good balance of serious mystery with retirement home hijinks. Definition of a hug in a book.
First of all, I was living for all the pajama sets! You might inspire me to upgrade my own collection. Second of all, my mom totally bought the pajama top from your last set thinking it was a regular shirt. And I thought it was TOO funny! 😂
*waiting for you to get to the word filling* 😂 - really enjoyed this! I’ve not read many cozy mysteries but I appreciate your take on them. Think I need to add some more to my TBR.
I know this isn’t the point of your videos but I love seeing your family’s dynamics and how Liam is having such a cool childhood it’s so beautiful to see and I thank you for sharing with us ❤️
This was so much fun! I don't read a lot of cosy mystery, I'm more of a horror/thriller girl, but I really enjoyed the Wiccan Wheel series by Jennifer David Hesse. Small town cosy witchy vibes. 🤗 There's a romance, and a realistic, down to earth portrayal of modern paganism I really liked. The best part is each book takes place at a different time of year around a Wiccan holiday (Midsummer Madness, Samhain Secrets, etc.), so they're perfect for seasonal/vibe reading!
This was so much fun! Loved the Nautical jammies. Hooray for a great pie! Way to go! I love the Lady hard castle series. Their banter is everything. She is 40, btw. I appreciate a fast, easy read after heavy or intense things, so I tend to grab a cozy mystery at least a couple times a month.
I just love watching Kayla's videos. The amount of thought and planning that goes into each video really shows. Every time I watch one of her videos it makes me want to pick a book and read outside it makes me so happy to watch her.
This vlog is you just you looking great and giving vibes. The nautical portion with the beautiful scenery and cute pjs. Just perfect 👌🏾and the pretty in pink pie portion (look at that illiteration) was 👩🏾🍳 💋! Loved this
The Stephanie Plum series is peak cozy mystery series and talks of food especially doughnuts a lot. Like it’s now a Pavlovien response. When I eat a doughnut I want to read a book in the series. When I read the books I need doughnuts nearby 😂
The Lady Hardcastle series is one of my favorites! They definitely get better and they definitely tell you more of their back story as you go on. I find their banter very funny…reminds me a lot of the fast wit of the Gilmore girls. I will say I chose to listen to the audible versions because Elizabeth Knowelden narrates them brilliantly.
If you want a cozy book about fixing up a shop you should read Legends and Lattes. It's not a mystery but it's 100% cozy vibes with heavy "fixing up a shop" plot.
19:10 I can’t believe you were there at the same time as the ferry ballet! They’re such cool performances and you just randomly happened to see one, gosh what a dream (although perhaps an oddly specific one 😝)
The background on that boat was amazing. I’ve never slept in a boat. I think I would like trying a houseboat. I purchased Death by Dumpling. There is so many in that series. I hope I like it, because I purchased the first 3 books. All your pajamas were cute. I received my Literally Dead Book Club. I got the pink interior. I love it! Blessings to you and yours. 💕💕
I love these videos! You should definitely include the Riley thorn series by Lucy score. Has a good romance and her roommates are a bunch of senior citizens which makes everything hilarious!
Cozy mysteries tend to have a character who works in a tea house/coffee shop/restaurant/bakery etc so getting that food item from the book would be fun!
I've been to a lot of vacation homes where the bookshelves kinda worked like a take one leave one free library, where people just read whatever interests them and where you can also leave your holiday reads If you don't wish to take them back
I used to read more cozy mysteries a few years back and always liked the ones by Cleo Coyle/Alice Kimberly. The main characters usually have something else going for them besides mystery solving: in the Coffeehouse Mysteries, the MC runs a Greenwich Village coffee shop in NYC (owned by her ex husband's eccentric mother), plus a daughter in art school and an on again off again thing with her ex (and the local police detective), and in the Haunted Bookshop mysteries the MC's small town Rhode island bookshop is haunted by the ghost of a snarky Dick Tracy-like detective from the 1930s who helps her solve murders (and navigate fighting over her son with her dead husband's wealthy NYC family) and this series also heavily references/quotes classic detective and murder mystery books, which is educational!
If a renovation cozy mystery is what you're looking for, you may like the Haunted Home Renovation Series by Juliet Blackwell about a contractor who renovates historic homes while dealing with spirits and solving murder cases. I say "may like it" because I know you're looking for more contemporary cozies so I'm not sure how you'd feel about the supernatural/paranormal element in it but hey, it's a home renovation cozy 😅 Also, Kate Carlisle has her Fixer Upper cozy series!
I know this may be a really odd comment, but can I just say that I love how I don't need to change my volume while I watch your videos. Like...never. Your audio is always on point. Okay. Love you, love your vlogs!
Oh my gosh, this is the highest of all compliments, you have no idea. 🙇♀️ It's not an odd comment at all because I take my audio mixing *far too* seriously 🤣
I'm not sure if this would be achievable, but maybe reading books from authors of color and going to a restaurant and eating the food they mention in there? I love this idea
nah this is an awesome idea!!
I like this too. I love reading about food in books 😂. I’m such a foodie haha
this is such a great idea!
maybe if you have like 10 books to choose from let someone hide all of them and the first five you find are the ones you read
Omg that's hilarious
Maybe you could add a twist and throw in sone books you don’t wanna read! Lol
that's a wonderful idea
I love this idea!!
This is genius and Rob could hide five and Liam could hide five Ahhhh I love it
Kaylaaaaaa this is honestly one of my favorite vlogs you’ve ever done. The vibes were immaculate. I can see myself comfort rewatching this over and over again. Definitely would love Christmas/Holiday themed mysteries if you have time in December!

i''m so invested in your cozy mystery journey. i'm loving this series
Your family adventures are the cutest. When I watch your videos I always think what a great childhood Liam is having ✨
This was such a nice video, between the content, the views, and the looks lol. The pajama thing was a fun idea, as well as the different locations -- my brain really likes the compartmentalization of it all.
You have the most creative ideas on booktube for reading vlogs. We appreciate you, Kayla. 💕
"Your eyes got so big, that means you did a good job!" That was really sweet actually 🥺
Love Liam’s new lighting career. Really taking off. 👏
The Tea Shop mystery series by Laura Child’s is the best cozy mystery series I’ve ever read. I love the characters!
Totally agree!💚
So glad to hear this - I love all things "tea", so I've been collecting this series, but I have yet to start it.

Did Rob's encouragement of your pie make me emotional??? Yes.
Laura Childs Tea Shop Murder Mysteries. She is up to 26 of them. Theo owns a tea shop and she just seems to stumble upon dead bodies. Recipes are included as is a little romance and history of tea. So agree about the narrator for the Lady Hardcastle series! This series is one of my favorites!
Your vlogs give me life! I love the noodle house shop mysteries. They are quick, cute, easy reads. They get a little more fun as the series goes on. Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies looks like so much fun. Adding to my never ending tbr.

I made the hand pies from Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies! So fun. I am loving this series of yours, thank you for doing it.

cant wait to read the pie one!! idk if these count but my cozy mystery suffusions are Fortune Favors The Dead and Jane Pek's book!
*The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie* - Romance and humor, it’s an easy fast paced classic I love 🤗
*An Untimely Death by Blyth Baker* - A newer cozy mystery series about a maid, sounds like the first book you read but has a cute romance and just gets better as series goes on. All shorter books.

This has to be one of my all time favorite Booktube videos! I’m late to the party but so grateful to have discovered your channel, Kayla! 🤗
I needed a Kayla video today!
🤗🤗🤗
not only did I love this vlog but I also loved seeing you with your little family! it makes me so happy :)

I recommend mysteries with a 'get out' (the movie) vibes! Apparently there are a few books with that vibe 🥰
I’m really digging these cozy mystery episodes!
Didn't realise this was a cozy mystery one!! Excited
I think that is a fabulous turn out for your first pie! More filling next time and you will have it near perfect!
I get so in love with Canada through your videos!I also love your personality and I am from Greece.
Another hour long video coming at the perfect time. Excited to watch this!
Loved the baking part❤️ and all the other fun trips. Now I want to try making apple pie with braids next time I'm baking one😁
I just love that you are in jammie’s for this whole video! Loving the cozy comfy vibes!
I just love watching Kayla's videos. The amount of thought and planning that goes into each video really shows. Every time I watch one of her videos it makes me want to pick a book and read outside it makes me so happy to watch her.
I loved watching this vlog. I agree with Aaron The vibes are so cozy!
This was such a fun time! I've never been interested in cozy mysteries before but now you've got me curious
Such cozy vibes in this vlog. Had an excellent time watching. Thank you.
This vlog is you just you looking great and giving vibes. The nautical portion with the beautiful scenery and cute pjs. Just perfect 👌🏾and the pretty in pink pie portion (look at that illiteration) was 👩🏾🍳 💋! Loved this
Oh, cool! I was born and raised in Campbell River and I wasn't expecting it to be a stop. I hope you guys enjoyed it there :)
I really enjoyed this vlog, and may try to incorporate some cozy mysteries into my reading schedule. Looking forward to part 3! 💖
I really enjoyed this video and watching your family go on little adventures.
The Stephanie Plum series is peak cozy mystery series and talks of food especially doughnuts a lot. Like it’s now a
Pavlovien response.
Love it!!! I think you should write the type of books u looking for your so passionate about the topics beloved!!!
Such a fun time! I miss Vancouver so much. We are planning to drive down in August!
19:10 I can’t believe you were there at the same time as the ferry ballet! They’re such cool performances and you just randomly happened to see one, gosh what a dream (although perhaps an oddly specific one 😝)
You laid that pie crust like a pro. Nice job!
OMG the ferry promenade! Another stellar reading vlog, Kayla! Loving the dreamy vacation spots
Happy you liked Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies! I had a fun time with it, too! ✨
Has a good romance and her roommates are a bunch of senior citizens which makes everything hilarious!
you should do an escape room in a future mystery book vlog
Thanks for taking us along on so many vacations, it’s such a fun escape
Cozy mysteries tend to have a character who works in a tea house/coffee shop/restaurant/bakery etc so getting that food item from the book would be fun!
Lots of these are parts of series. A "second book cozy mystery" vlog would be fun!
I got my literally dead book club t-shirt mug and tote bag. Thank you so much for putting out merchandise for the book club.
nothing I enjoy more on a Tuesday evening than a BooksandLala reading vlog
Omg I’m not sure if you could incorporate this into a vlog but I think it’d be fun to watch you solve a point & click mystery game like Nancy Drew
I’m glad your pie turned out. It looked so good.
Literally all I could think during the dome part of this vlog was how pretty you look so early in the morning!!!
I am super impressed by your crust. I've been baking for years and can't get a crust like that!
My favorite vlog of yours!
Loved this vlog!! As a cozy mystery “aficionado” lol….I’m sooo excited you are trying them!
If a renovation cozy mystery is what you're looking for, you may like the Haunted Home Renovation Series by Juliet Blackwell about a contractor who renovates historic homes while dealing with spirits and solving murder cases.
I say "may like it" because I know you're looking for more contemporary cozies so I'm not sure how you'd feel about the supernatural/paranormal element in it but hey, it's a home renovation cozy 😅
Also, Kate Carlisle has her Fixer Upper cozy series!
I was looking for the same thing, so even if it wasn’t what Kayla was looking for, I thank you for the rec!
Sleeping on a boat must have been a fun experience. It looked very relaxing. The entire vlog looked relaxing tbh. I need a getaway.
Ellery Adams has several cozy mystery series that incorporate romance with mysteries and also some bookstores/libraries settings.
The synchronized head movements when you said you’re sleeping on a boat 🤣🤣🤣🤣
