    After changing places of occupation, I had to get a new e-mail & re-subscribe. Although I am a previous subscriber, I enjoyed watching this one again for the 3rd or 4th time. Blessings on you & yours. The Old Preacher who once lived in SE Kentucky

    Very nice. I've used this almost exact system but used a 9x12 drop cloth.
    Folded extra on bottom over the top for more insulation for my feet. Sides are still 3' ish (a little extra up top so I can pull it over better) and cut the extra off and used for foam pillow.
    I'm 6'1" so I love the extra length.
    Very nice video and I like the hemp idea. I also like how you made the edges rounded and bold.
    Might re-do mine the same way.

    your budget outfit looks good for summer nights in places like your accent indicates you live. I live in a much cooler climate where a much sturdier bedroll is required for any comfortable overnight outdoor experience - albeit at a much larger outlay of money. hudson bay wool blanket inside an 'arctic' down sleeping bag inside a 5'x15' 16 ounce canvas duck envelope. such a bedroll is too heavy to carry more than ten or twenty feet,, so a horse, llama or dog team would be nice too - both for freightage and companionship. a pack horse can carry a person's gear and its own feed over rough ground. hopefully a human being won't need to travel too far if he/she doesn't have a pack animal, so as to able to enjoy the night sky and the security of getting away from the rat race. my two cents for what they're worth these days. I'm a ramshackle homesteader too, so please accept my respect and admiration for your channel.

    Good one Keith! I have one of those tarps on my bench now. Just getting ready to sew up the unfinished edges before turning it into an oilcloth in the spring.

      A bedroll shouldn't be waterproof, it will lead to massive condensation issues. Once washed and shrunk the canvas will do what it is intended to do. A tarp is a different story. Although most waterproof agents will add a good degree of flammability to the tarp, which must be considered.

      @@RamshackleHomesteadKeithandJen I have seen a video where a Civil War reenactor used a liquid rubber paint to simulate the rubberised blankets used (and apparently loved) by Civil War soldiers. Do you know anything about this product?

    I have been trying to have an effective bedroll since i watcedh my favorite movie "The Earthling". Dealing with rain and wet ground is a problem. My latest iteration is a Tvvek Biny sack and a poncho to wear and to use as a tarp in a plow configuration with the bivy underneath it.

    Thanks for the video Keith...I’ve been eyeballing those canvas drop cloths at Lowe’s . I think I’m gonna get a couple and make a bedroll like yours with one, and sew some loops on the corners of the other one for a quick tarp shelter. Have you tried treating them with some sort of waterproofing?

      @@hillbillynick2000 I know, I was just curious if there was something less volatile than linseed oil, turpentine, and beeswax. I’ve read several accounts of that mixture spontaneously combusting. I’m thinking of trying a water seal product, like Thompson’s.

    • @hillbillynick2000
      @hillbillynick2000 3 роки тому

      No experience with it but give it a try! As far as the spontaneous combustion, that can happen with linseed oil. Avoidable though, if you follow some easy steps. I'd follow the same steps if you try the Weather Seal. Hang it to dry out of the sun. Make sure it's fully open, not bunched or folded etc

      Red barn paint is about the best thing we’ve used. It looks like what was called Spanish brown when done

    • @H8FULL1
      @H8FULL1 2 роки тому

      I also thought about infusing wax on the bottom of it. But not too sure if that would work. I just use a ground tarp and then wrap it up in the tarp when done.

    I need to see the needle that will accommodate that twine and how you thread it. Dollar store twine is too thick. I know I can untwist it, but what are you doing exactly? Also my big box stores don’t sell 6x9 canvas; I’d have to get larger and cut it down. Why twine and not dental floss which is strong and water resistant? No knock to you, but maybe tell us a little more detail please.

      I’m sewing with polished hemp waxed with bees wax and using a sailors needle it has a trocar point. Hemp is extremely strong and fairly traditional. I use it because I often take this style bedroll to 18/19th century historical gatherings.
      You could absolutely use any cordage / thread you wanted and modify to your needs. This is just how we do it. Take it and use the idea to suit your needs with the material you have .

    • @frankmoreno6866
      @frankmoreno6866 3 роки тому

      Why dont you try a navy "sailing needle"? Its shaped to pierce canvas, and the eye will easily accomadate the hemp cord; but whe i used to sew leather, i would steal a roll of hemp "sailing twine"... its tough n waxed too for easy stitching.

    In addition to my previous commenmts, have you considered using Linseed Oil & mineral spirits to convert it into an 18th century Oilskin Bedroll? Thanks again.

    No offence , but you can get sleeping bags on Amazon for 20 bucks and do no work at all , and they are warmer and waterproof. I have a sign on my doghouse that says "camping ,where you spend a small fortune trying to live like a homeless person. I'd hate to guess how many thousands I have in camping ,survival , gear. I was going to start my own school ,till the county came out and started in with codes and requirements I'd need . It wasn't feasible in the least. A friend of mine got caught running one and they ruined him . You wouldn't believe what all is required. You're talking serious $$$$$$$$$$ ,thousands and thousands and thousands . Crazy. Peace.
