I'm not sure exactly as its been a long time since I did this job if you've a look at the description I've got all the items and quantities used in that 😁
Thank you for your efforts in demonstrating how to do this. Please to all your viewers and DIYers, although his video is sped up and there are clear markings as to how much time to allow between steps, it is incredibly important to remember to give yourself as much time from the moment you start. Get all your products together so there are no interruptions. Go over a list of all the supplies and the wok is best done in daylight. You will get tired, you will be tempted to cheat on the dry time, you will be tempted to spray more on the first coat, you will be tempted to settle on fewer coats than the recommended 3 coats of each phase, you will be tempted to not do the inner part of the wheel, you will be tempted to not sand or rub some alcohol to remove some loose surface impurities, do yourself a favor, just wait until you can devote a whole morning or afternoon, be patient and thorough. You will be proud of our hard work in the end. I did mine last night (6pm to 2am, time did seem to fly). Poor lighting conditions made me overspray some areas and overcompensate some others. Take your time and do it right. Mine turned out great despite all the mistakes of a first time DIYer. I made my own job harder in the end by not being patient. KEY WORD IS BE PATIENT.
Man I’ve painted plenty of wheels and tried different techniques but after watching this video I definitely did the set I just painted the best. It was my first time sanding the primer and using 2k clear gloss and I can’t believe how good they came out! Thank you for the tips!
That is such a nice compliment bro I'm glad this video was of some use I remember when I painted my current wheels on my VW its crazy to think how long that's been and how wheels can make or break the look of a car 😀
1) Normal things that cause this are skipping the prep of sanding the wheel or 2) the most common using cheap 1k clearcoat which isn't as durable as the 2k bodyshops use and the one I used in this video proxl or 3) not putting three coats of clearcoat did you do any of those?
@THE_JOURNEY I did sand. I used 2k clear coat. I think I may have only did 2 coats. 😪🤦🏾♀️ How are ur rims holding up? I may have to get mine done professionally.
Sand well, 3 coats of primer, sand lightly with 800 grit to flatten the primer, 3 coats of paint and then 3 coats of 2k clear. My wheels are holding up well not sure how long it's been since I installed them 😊 the first time painting can be a bit hit and miss I had similar issues when I painted my first panel and used 1k clearcoat but now if I paint a panel even with cans you'll find it hard to guess whether it was a can or spray gun job it's all a practice thing and once you've done it once as long as you follow the steps and you use good products for example like proxl 2k you'll get amazing results the amount of people that have reached out or sent me pictures of their wheels it's fascinating

Hello Brian thank you for the kind feedback I know the Van is going to look amazing for the best results don't forget to throw on three coats of 2K clear ❤️
I have watched your video for more than 20 times. I have watched more than 50 other videos about painting wheels but yours is one of the best. After washing the car for the first time since I paint the wheels and after a close inspection with a powerful torch I need to re-spray two wheels. The are small patches on which you can see that the paint is thiner but only if you go very close to the wheel. Yes, I cut some corners, I haven't been patient. This is it: trial and error. Next time I will do a proper job and I will apply clear coat as well. 👍
If you follow the process and you throw on three coats of 2k clear you'll have spot on results when I first got into painting I did exactly the same until I learnt my lesson and did it properly 👌
Hi there its called Mr Aerosol I've put the link for it below hope that helps 2 - Proxl 2K Clear - ebay.us/Lz1EzI 2 - Etch Primer Grey - ebay.us/4YF8D0 2 - Gloss Black Aerosol Can - ebay.us/8DWdC6
A beginner's question: to re-spray the wheels do I have to sand down with 800 or 1000 grit a coat of paint in order to apply the new coat and the clear coat? Thank you in advance!
I would use red scotch first ,400 grit sandpaper after then do my primer then light sand with 800 grit then go from there don't forget to do 3 coats of primer, paint and clearcoat for best results
Hi great job on the wheels. Im going to be doing my wheels soon on my corsa e, in black. Would be ok to put on 4 coats of black when spraying the wheels? Then once they are dry four coats of clear lacker so it will last longer.
Thanks for the feedback if your putting on your colour and it looks like you've not got great coverage then yeah you can put on another coat of black. if you use good products you shouldn't need to put on four coats of clearcoat. For bodyshop results use 2k clearcoat three coats of that and your wheels will be shining and durable 😄
I've always wondered can you spray color one day and the gloss the next day or even days later, and if so does it need a key to stick?? Or can you just make sure the wheel is clean and apply the clear coat?? Thanks.
Thank you for your reply, much appreciated, and if painting the same day, an hr after the last color coat has been applied the colour doesn't need a key with 800 grit?? Thanks again.
On the same day if its an hour later or a little bit earlier you can go straight ahead and start your clearcoat without needing to key it with 800 grit
Hi there YJ thank you for the kind words I used: 2 - Proxl 2K Clear - ebay.us/Lz1EzI 2 - Etch Primer Grey - ebay.us/4YF8D0 2 - Gloss Black Aerosol Can - ebay.us/8DWdC6 If your curious about any of the other quantities all the quantities are in the description of the video hope that helps 😁
This is an excellent video, thank you so much! I completed the above on my BMW F20 and they look amazing. Only thing is, when I put my lug nuts back on, the wheel brace touches the inside and scrapes very easily and can see the old paint underneath. Is this common?
Hello Jason I'm glad it looks good and wow on the F20 that is a beautiful car and yeah it can be best way to not have that is to make sure you put 3x coats of clear on and use a good 2k clearcoat I realised after I released the video it only shows me doing 2x coats of clear but it's actually 3x coats for best results so I pinned a comment saying about that in the description hope that helps 😁
excellent job on the rims, found your video as i was looking for the best way to do it, a bonus thing is you have the list of whats needed right there too, now is that list for all 4 wheels ?
Hi there Aceslong thanks for the feedback and yeah that's my list to do all four wheels yours might be the same or slightly different depending on your alloy size I'm running on the original VW 185/R60/15 hope that helps 😄
Thank you mate appreciate the feedback and you don't need to rub all the paint off you just have to rub it down until the surface is no longer shiny and looks Matte
Nice Job.....As for the comment regarding sanding before Clear coat, its a myth and is a wasted step. The best way to prevent Lacquer peel is to Clear coat within 30 minutes of of your last coat of colour, especially if your paint has laid well. The tacky paint will help the adhesion process and prevent peel.
Hi David thanks for the feedback, Agreed on the sanding before clear coat. I usually wait one hour before throwing on the clear do you think that's too long?
@@The_journeyy Yes, you need to clear coat whist the colour is still tacky to touch. Personally I SET A 20 minute timer after laying the colour and then I clear coat.
I remember getting exactly the same thing when I done my first panel numerous times, ended up reaching out to a bodyshop just to find out why I couldn't get my gloss 😲🤣
One last question, do you recommend getting a good quality primer and gloss black paint or is a Halfords one fine? I see you used ProXL etch primer just wanted to know if that’s necessary.

Great video man! Just got done with mine! Are they good to put back on the car the day after or how long is the curing process/how long should you keep them away from the elements? -B
That's amazing to hear it really does depend on a lot of different factors one of them being where you did the job and the temperature in that area I personally left mine until the following day because I painted them in 17 degree weather and I don't have a paint booth to bake them in for 30 minutes if the temperature was good in your area and its a nice hot day they could be ready to go back on in about 2-4 hours but for me personally I always leave them until the following day 😀
@@The_journeyy wow thanks for your quick response. It was nearing 95 degrees when I finished mine up yesterday, so I think I will be good by the end of today. 🙏
When you paint a car or your wheels you don't take the car to the car wash for two to three months the pressure ruins paint if its not fully cured and set which takes a while you just wash it normally by hand with soapy water and a typical sponge sort of thing 😁
Hi there its called Mr Aerosol I've put the link for it below hope that helps 2 - Proxl 2K Clear - ebay.us/Lz1EzI 2 - Etch Primer Grey - ebay.us/4YF8D0 2 - Gloss Black Aerosol Can - ebay.us/8DWdC6 If you've any other questions about items used I've put a list in description 😊
The point is it just makes it shine more but that's just me wanting silly gloss the wheels didn't even need that after I finished they were beautiful! I waisted 48 hours before just buffing them with the pad and 2k is very durable it won't come off but tbf its not really needed
Thank you Jakk Batt, crazy to think how such a small thing can make the car look so cool, nothing better than getting some wheels really cheap and doing a little refurb have a good time 😀
I'm not getting the question mate you a knife to score what? Once the job was done I just peeled the masking tape off and the plastic of and that was job done hope that helps 😊
@@The_journeyy sorry I was assuming the paint was so thick it left like a layer. It happens with acrylic based pants. You can to score the masked area otherwise you risk peeling off the painted area but that's applied with a brush. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have to do that with the spray can. Also how long did you leave between the primer coats Top coats Lacquer coats Sorry for all the questions 🤦♂️ it all goes down tomorrow for me and I keep thinking I might miss a step
First time I've heard of that issue I didn't have any issues like that I just prepped my area properly masked up and got to work. Left it a day after the primer went on but I could have waited just a few hours if I liked I left it an hour after the final paint coats and then one hour between the clearcoats I've had many people get in contact on instagram showing me their awesome results judging by the sounds of things you know a thing or two about painting so it should be a walk in the park for you 😄
No worries mate you can ask as many questions as you like, have you tried Ebay or Amazon? Or like a local shop paint shop near you? If your referring to sanding the primer after its cued I'd say the 1200 if your really not able to get 800 grit probably better than using nothing if you use nothing you just won't have as good a gloss
Quick question bro. You put 3 coat of aresol black spray in your video but mention 2 in the the description. Do u buy 3 or 2 . And is there a specific order you spray them in or do u just pick one can and start with that as the first coat
I used two cans of each bottle so 2 cans of the black paint, 2 cans of primer and so on When you paint the tyre you'll need to do 3 coats of primer first then 3 coats of black paint and then 3 coats of clear The order is primer, paint, and then clear coat hope that helps 😀
2x Primer, 2x base, 2x clearcoat if you're curious about any other quantities there's information about everything used in the description hope that helps
Yes it matters how long you leave it if you don't let the primer dry properly and you said it the results will not be very good. You don't have to leave it over night like me that's just a preference of mine depending on your location and the temperature in your painting environment if the primer is dry after 1 hour or whatever timescale you can sand it as a bare minimum I'd leave my primer to dry for a few hours if it was a hot day and then sand with the 800 if its a colder day more hours
Thank you, not any specific gloss blacks the one I used is one mixed by local autobody shop the clear I'd recommend proxl 2k clear the results are like professional booths hope that helps 😁
Hi Milno1996 yes I did wet the sandpaper when I was sanding the primer. That sounds amazing if you get a chance after your finished send me some pictures of your amazing results 😁
No worries bro I left it overnight because that's just a preference of mine means I don't have to spend so many hours spraying in one day you can leave it a couple of hours until it's dry and then wet sand 👌
Thanks Nigel its so strange how changing something so small can make such a drastic change to a cars look put them on this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at the difference 😀
Hi Jaskirat the whole job took: Hi there its called Mr Aerosol I've put the link for it below hope that helps 2 - Proxl 2K Clear - ebay.us/Lz1EzI 2 - Etch Primer Grey - ebay.us/4YF8D0 2 - Gloss Black Aerosol Can - ebay.us/8DWdC6 If you've anything questions about items used I've put a list in description 😊
Nice Excellent job! I would like to do the same thing on my truck wheels but I have a question 🙋🏻♂️ is the paint and shine permanent when the process it’s done or does it fade away ? 🤔
No worries bro I left it overnight because that's just a preference of mine means I don't have to spend so many hours spraying in one day you can leave it a couple of hours until it's dry and then wet sand 😊
Wicked video bro👌🏼 I've got a can of E-tech alloy wheel lacquer and the instructions on it recommend to sand down the paint with 1200 wet sand or the lacquer might not stick well. Do you think that step is necessary? Thanks bro
@@The_journeyy No worries 👌🏼If I was to use a 2k lacquer I'm guessing I wouldn't have to do that step? I don't believe this e-tech lacquer is 2k even tho it's made specifically for alloys.
If you was using 2k you would have to do the same thing, 2k is much more durable than 1k but I'm guessing since what your using is for wheels it should be very durable 👌👌
I've done other brands the process is exactly the same I don't do private work for customers though my life is rather busy and I genuinely don't have the time to fit that in 😊
It's been a while since I did this job can't remember exactly I've got quantities for everything used in the video in the description hope that helps 😊
It depends on your environment and how hot or cold it is where your spraying. I spray mine outside with the the temperature around 17 to 20 degrees left it like 15-30 minutes to dry. If I was in a hot garage I could have left it for 5-10 minutes
*I FORGOT TO SHOW THE LAST COAT PUT ON THREE COATS OF CLEARCOAT FOR THE BEST RESULTS!!* 👌
How many can did you use in total for the Primer, Paint, and Gloss coz i could guess how much it would Cost Myself
I'm not sure exactly as its been a long time since I did this job if you've a look at the description I've got all the items and quantities used in that 😁
Question though Iv got no issues spraying a set of rims but how to get them properly dry so they don't end up soft
You don't spray in very humid areas and you follow the instructions for allowing them to dry per coat as suggested by your cans instructions
Can you list the products used.

Wow that's incredibly hot weather and also great for drying I agree with your assessment 👍
Did you wet the 800grit sandpaper when sanding the primer or dry?
I did slightly but it's not a must
Ok thanks! 🙏🏼
Can I ask do you have a list of the products that you bought to complete This? For example how many can you bought of each gloss primer and clear?
Also loved the video 100% motivated me to give it a go on mine

how many days do you have to wait to go to the carwash?
When you paint a car or your wheels you don't take the car to the car wash for two to three months the pressure ruins paint if its not fully cured and set which takes a while you just wash it normally by hand with soapy water and a typical sponge sort of thing 😁
Great 👍🏻
May we know the materials and spray you are using?
Hi there its called Mr Aerosol I've put the link for it below hope that helps
2 - Proxl 2K Clear - ebay.us/Lz1EzI
2 - Etch Primer Grey - ebay.us/4YF8D0
2 - Gloss Black Aerosol Can - ebay.us/8DWdC6
If you've any other questions about items used I've put a list in description 😊
i could not find the gloss black paint ebay
.. help !!!
the one used ,, help please
,,, love the gloss black ,,,very shine...
Hi Carlos sorry to hear you couldn't find it here it is ebay.us/JSf4z6
Just come across this video and am looking to paint mine how many cans did you use for all 4 wheels and what paint did you use brand wise ?
The brand is called Mr Aerosol if you look at the description got all the quantities and items used hope that helps 😄
@@The_journeyy cheers ill have a look
There is no more to say than grate video bro! U did well done job and this paint should stick this wheels years!
I appreciate the kind words and it sure does and makes the car look better 😄
What's the point in the last process using the cutting compound? Finished my wheels and darent use the compound in case it removes the laqueer!
The point is it just makes it shine more but that's just me wanting silly gloss the wheels didn't even need that after I finished they were beautiful! I waisted 48 hours before just buffing them with the pad and 2k is very durable it won't come off but tbf its not really needed
@@The_journeyy thank you they came out great. Top man!
There's nothing I love hearing more than when people tell me they got the same results I did thank you for reaching out 🔥
I have dark gray rims on my car I want to make them black should I still do the gray primer ?
A light grey primer would still be good mine were silver I used a grey primer which wasn't that much lighter than my silver hope that helps
looks awesome 🤘 just got some used alloys with a really bad rookie paint job🤣☠ for dirt cheap😃 cant wait to sand em and do it right💪
Thank you Jakk Batt, crazy to think how such a small thing can make the car look so cool, nothing better than getting some wheels really cheap and doing a little refurb have a good time 😀
@@The_journeyy what did you use the scotch brite to do? I don’t see it used in the video
Just to further scuff the wheels in those tight spots my 400 grit sandpaper might not have been able to reach sorry about the slow reply 😊
ob😊t
When you are preparing the wheels do you use wet 400 grit first or dry 40 grit. Hanks Rob
Hi Rob I used wet 400 grit 😊 before that I used 320 grit to get the deep dirt of mine
Brilliant thanks for your reply
Last question did you Lacquer the inside
Hi Robert no worries and yes with these wheels I put lacquer front and back 😀
Thanks a lot for your time.
when you finally removed the plastic and masking tape did you use a blade or a knife to score. or did you just peel it off?
I'm not getting the question mate you a knife to score what? Once the job was done I just peeled the masking tape off and the plastic of and that was job done hope that helps 😊
@@The_journeyy sorry I was assuming the paint was so thick it left like a layer. It happens with acrylic based pants. You can to score the masked area otherwise you risk peeling off the painted area but that's applied with a brush. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have to do that with the spray can. Also how long did you leave between the primer coats
Top coats
Lacquer coats
Sorry for all the questions 🤦♂️ it all goes down tomorrow for me and I keep thinking I might miss a step
First time I've heard of that issue I didn't have any issues like that I just prepped my area properly masked up and got to work. Left it a day after the primer went on but I could have waited just a few hours if I liked
I left it an hour after the final paint coats and then one hour between the clearcoats I've had many people get in contact on instagram showing me their awesome results judging by the sounds of things you know a thing or two about painting so it should be a walk in the park for you 😄
@@The_journeyy one last question, I'm having problems getting 800grit wet sand paper, I've got 1200 and 600. Which would you use?
No worries mate you can ask as many questions as you like, have you tried Ebay or Amazon? Or like a local shop paint shop near you? If your referring to sanding the primer after its cued I'd say the 1200 if your really not able to get 800 grit probably better than using nothing if you use nothing you just won't have as good a gloss
Quick question bro. You put 3 coat of aresol black spray in your video but mention 2 in the the description. Do u buy 3 or 2 . And is there a specific order you spray them in or do u just pick one can and start with that as the first coat
I used two cans of each bottle so 2 cans of the black paint, 2 cans of primer and so on
When you paint the tyre you'll need to do
3 coats of primer first then
3 coats of black paint and then
3 coats of clear
The order is primer, paint, and then clear coat hope that helps 😀
Great job mate. What size wheels are these. I have some 20" and need to work out how many cans of each to purchase.
Thank you Robert 😊 I see you've got some proper tyres there. I've got 15inch wheels on mine
How many cans did you use.
2x Primer, 2x base, 2x clearcoat if you're curious about any other quantities there's information about everything used in the description hope that helps
Quick question does it matter how long you leave it after the last primer? Because you said leave it over night before using the 800
Yes it matters how long you leave it if you don't let the primer dry properly and you said it the results will not be very good.
@@The_journeyy I wish I can show you my results. Thanks to you. My tires look magnificent
I've got email feel free to send over some pictures reginald71993@gmail.com glad your results come out as good as mine ☺️
Great work! A great video as well! Do you recommend any specific brands of gloss black or clear that you have found to work better than others?
Thank you, not any specific gloss blacks the one I used is one mixed by local autobody shop
the clear I'd recommend proxl 2k clear the results are like professional booths hope that helps 😁
Great Job!
And the encouragement i needed to DIY it 😂
Glad you liked the video for the best results don't forget to throw on 3x coats of clear 👌
So which 3 types of coat do you need? For the spray paint
Primer
Base
Clear coat 👌
@@The_journeyy because I have chrome rims and I want to paint them black but I need help finding the resources so I can properly paint over them
Definitely that bro the tools you need are in this video and this is the best one to follow I talk about everything step by step
@@The_journeyy I’m confused on which spray paint do I use for the first second and third coat
@@The_journeyy so do I use the clear coat first? The self etching primer than the aerosol paint in that order,
And how long will this paint job last with its glossy finish?
Same as the bodyshops
How many tubs of paint and primer did you use?

Thank for don't forget to put 3x coats of clear for the best results 👌
After the coats of primer, do I have to wait all day to let it dry before I sand it down like you did
No you don't have to wait all day
Hey man after im done puttin on the last clear coat, how long should I wait before putting on my car
You could put it on a few hours after it's dried but personally I like to leave it overnight and then put it on the car
Great work man, how is the paint holding up
The same as when first done if the job is done properly and good materials are used you'll get the same results as a bodyshop 😊
@@The_journeyy k, I was looking at powder coating my wheels but I’ll just paint them , powder coating is way more expensive
I've heard it can be very pricey 😵
Do u wet the sandpaper when ur sanding after primer just about to start doing a set of wheels myself
Hi Milno1996 yes I did wet the sandpaper when I was sanding the primer. That sounds amazing if you get a chance after your finished send me some pictures of your amazing results 😁
@@The_journeyy I will do that my man thank for the help
So what all spray paint cans do you need? Which type

TENT i need link to the Tent please 🙏 😅

@@The_journeyy thanks 😊
No worries bro thanks for watching the video 👏
how many cans of primer and paint did you use?
Quantities of all items used in the description 😊
Great video 🎉
I appreciate you 🙏
do you have to leave the primer to dry over night or is that optional
No worries bro I left it overnight because that's just a preference of mine means I don't have to spend so many hours spraying in one day you can leave it a couple of hours until it's dry and then wet sand 👌
So how many coats would you say I should do if I was not to leave it over night?
Still 3 coats for primer, base and clear coat 👌
They look FRESH. Great job 👍
Thanks Nigel its so strange how changing something so small can make such a drastic change to a cars look put them on this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at the difference 😀
Hey there, can I ask how many cans of each do you need for all four wheels? Thanks
Sorry just found it all in description 😁
Hi there glad you found it was just about to answer the question but I've just seen this 😊
No worries hope that helps 😊
Can I still do this without taking my alloy wheels off the vehicle?
ua-cam.com/video/DfVE7AsRe5c/v-deo.html
Yes you can do it without taking the wheels off
Preparation is the Key !!! Great Job Bro
Definitely is bro 💯 just finished painting some bumpers video dropping tomorrow 😊 hope your well
how much can u have used to spray 4 wheels
is it 1 can of primer for each wheel and 1 can of paint each wheel

Nice Excellent job! I would like to do the same thing on my truck wheels but I have a question 🙋🏻♂️ is the paint and shine permanent when the process it’s done or does it fade away ? 🤔
Hello Hector if done correctly the results are like the bodyshop mine still gloss like the first day they were finished hope that helps 😄
Thanks that’s very helpful 👍🏻
@@hectorjr5128 do a clear coat when you’re done and maintain it by not taking your car we’re they use scrubs.
So after doing the 3rd coat you wait over night before you wet sand?

That looks tight man great job
Hey Jose thank you for the kind words 😊
Wicked video bro👌🏼 I've got a can of E-tech alloy wheel lacquer and the instructions on it recommend to sand down the paint with 1200 wet sand or the lacquer might not stick well. Do you think that step is necessary? Thanks bro
Thanks bro 😊 yeah I would say its a must give it good adhesion it will make the job look tidy and not starting peeling hope that helps
@@The_journeyy Ah wicked 🙂 Nice one bro, appreciate the quick responses 👊🏼
No worries bro if you ever have any other questions just drop me a message 👊👏
Do u do wheel works for other cars.
I've done other brands the process is exactly the same I don't do private work for customers though my life is rather busy and I genuinely don't have the time to fit that in 😊

How long does primer have to dry
It depends on your environment and how hot or cold it is where your spraying. I spray mine outside with the the temperature around 17 to 20 degrees left it like 15-30 minutes to dry. If I was in a hot garage I could have left it for 5-10 minutes
Good 👍 I'm going to do mine .
Hi Bigfist255 I'm glad you're have fun its well worth it👏
Would I be able to do one wheel at a time with my car jacked? I don’t have a way to get all 4 wheels off at the same time
