Jerry actually did very few of the harmonies on the records. Just the live stuff. He was amazing tho. Layne would lay down nearly all the vocal harmonies over his own voice.
@@jimmydavies9038 not true. He wrote the harmonies. But he influenced Cantrell to sing them and in doing so made cantrell a great singer in the process. You can always hear the difference between their voices. Cantrell sang alot on studio takes. Shit heaven beside you is almost all Cantrell
Daniel Castillo there are many songs where you can hear Jerry. That said you can hear 2 and 3 layers of laynes voice in probably 10 of their songs. He’d go to the studio and lay down all of the harmonies himself. He worked tirelessly at it even in his last session with the band. Jerry is heard more often in songs like would and heaven beside you because they were more of a call and reply and the contrast in their voices was the whole point
Alice in Chains was the greatest band of the grunge era, in my opinion. The lead singer, Layne Staley suffered with depression and drug addiction, and it took his life far too young. His death was a great loss to those who loved him, and to those who loved his music. I appreciate your reactions on such a visceral level, because you lose yourself in the music and have such a beautiful spirit. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel.
@@jasonspeelman4035Im one who likes Nirvana too, but I agree with you on the fact there is no reason they are bigger than AIC. Layne’s voice will never be topped.
Yea Chris Cornell was from Soundgarden & Audioslave, Scott Weiland the lead singer of Stone temple pilots & Velvet revolver. Mike Starr was the bassist from Alice in chains. Of the 5 big 'grunge' bands: Nirvana, Alice in chains, Soundgarden, Stone temple pilots and Pearl jam, Eddie Vedder from Pearl jam is the only singer still alive; all 5 were known for having pretty booming voices.
All had the known enemies, drugs and heroin in particular and depression. One can wonder how big AIC could have been had they been able to do more touring.

Mad Season is AMAZING. Like Layne's unsung Masterpiece. Straight from the Soul. As the band put it : 'He was on a spiritual mission, not a musical one with that first album.'

This was the 'clean' version, BTW. All the pit, spit etc were originally shit. Layne Staley was a beast of a singer! (As we just saw!) You could mention him in the same sentence with Frank Sinatra, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Bjork, Annie Lenox, Chris Cornell and other greats and not be committing blasphemy! Yeah, unfortunately, heroin use was very pervasive among the grunge era musicians and there were many OD/suicides. BTW, most heroin overdoses occur after someone uses heroin for a time then quit, then relapse and start using again. Users slowly ramp up to a high dose during their initial use, then quit and their body cleans out and they loose their resistance (induced enzyme levels that quickly metabolize the heroin, to be technical) then when they relapse they start with the high dose they last used, which their bodies are no longer prepared to handle. Sorry, had to let the scientist out for a second there. Thanks for this.
Layne Staley was the lead singer of Alice in Chains. He died on April 5, 2002. He was 34. He toured with Alice in Chains and his other band, Mad Season, until 1996 (or 1997, depening on what you call a "show"). He had been battling an addiction to heroin the majority of his adult life. His girlfriend - later fiance - Demri Perrot passed away from a heroin overdose. The majority of lyrics are written by the guitarist Jerry Cantrell and sung by Layne. Cantrell often said the lyrics were about innocuous things like breakups and political messages like censorship (as is the case with Man in the Box). Most fans believe - especially me - that the lyrics were about Layne and Demri's relationship with each other and heroin. The songs were deep, and they played an entire acoustic show on MTV Unplugged that was one of the best performances ever. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to see Alice In Chains live in the early 90's..Layne was healthy and Fine as hell!! Talented he put every ounce of his performance to his audience!!! 🤩💜❤️💗
Jamal is among the first, if not the first, legitimate reactionary. He is sincerely into understanding the meaning behind the music and the videos the artists sought to portray and convey. The original singer Layne Staley was such an amazing singer! RIP to yet another great artist! I did just recently see them LIVE, the new lead singer is also amazing! But such a tragedy. 😔 The crazy thing is, my brother is a very talented musician, and ironically, when he did an Alice in Chains song, I suddenly realized, how he eerily could make his voice sound just like Layne's AND he looks JUST like Layne in certain music videos. It just sent chills up my spine! Love this band! Thanks again for another amazing reaction! Enjoyed it!
Yes sadly nearly every lead vocalist from this era and genre is now gone. Can’t wait till you do comfortably numb by Pink Floyd. Make sure you do the live version at Earls court (pulse tour) 94.❤️❤️
the big 4 Grunge bands, were arguably: Nirvana-w/Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam-w/Eddie Vedder, Soundgarden -w/Chris Cornell, Alice In Chains-w/Layne Stayley. Only Eddie is alive (& well) now. Bloody sad af for our generation X. The kids they spoke the truth to! They were all deep poets beyond belief. They were all Unbelievable, incredible, vocalists. They were all super-power talented. They were all beautiful to look at (not gonna lie) Hero's, all, nonetheless... & live on through our love, through fortunate REdiscovery, & the magic of their legacy. Alice In Chains eventually toured again, (I saw them here in NZ 2019. They rocked!) & have another, very different but hugely talented dude, called William.
Another favorite band of mine...Loved Layne Staley...His voice was so extraordinary!!!...May he and bassist Mike Starr rest in peace...Sadly, both passed away from drug addiction...🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁...
The guitar work in this son combined with the singing just vibe perfectly togeather

"Grunge" bands make songs based on their own life experiences, their feelings, their turmoil, inner demons, etc. That is why they are so good because they are putting their hearts and souls into their music, not just the great vocals but the instruments they play. RIP LAYNE STALEY RIP CHRIS CORNELL STAY SAFE EDDIE VEDDER
Layne Staley died alone in his apartment in April 2002. He was found about 2 weeks after he passed. He had become a recluse, and had fallen deep into drug addiction. His friends from the band really tried to help him but he avoided them. He had a girlfriend, her name escapes me at the moment, but she had died years earlier and it was said that her death caused his deep and dark depression.
I love these hat trick reactions you're doing!!! After AIC u gotta react to Pearl Jam Black unplugged, Jeremy & Porch live at Pink Pop!!! Seriously, u can thank me later😉 Much ♥️ from Bama 🙋 💕 PS: All members of Pearl Jam are still Alive💯
Great group . Layne's voice is amazing . Their songs deep . Some of the lyrics are prophetic . Losing two members heart breaking . Layne towards the end was in very rough shape . You can see it and yet he fell thru the cracks . In the 90 's groups wrote their own music and sang it . No covers . You lose quite a bit when it's not your music . I love music . I go way back before rock . Listen to blues ect . It is great a new generation is listening to Alice In Chains . Nobody can imitate them . Love your reactions . Rock
He died in 2002. Hard to believe he's been gone for 20 years. A co-worker turned me on to Alice In Chains back in the early 2000s. I'm so glad he did. I had heard of them prior to that. They're brilliant. Mike Starr never got over Layne's death and blamed himself. Sadly, he died from an OD also. The guilt ate him up.
i love you brother. i know man. i know how this song makes you feel. you are a genuinely good and decent human being. it is a pleasure to watch you from afar. i am a true fan of yours. thank you for what you do
Layne Staley is probably the most talented rock vocalist of his generation. Such a small guy with such a large voice. I'm so glad I got to see AIC live before Layne passed, it was epic.

[Music video version:] Shove my nose in spit
Won't you come and save me, save me?
Feed my eyes. Can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries will be wasted
Feed my eyes. Now you've sewn them shut
Feed my eyes. Can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries will be wasted
Feed my eyes. Now you've sewn them shut
You’re right. It’s heartbreaking.
Dude, you are one of the best on UA-cam at reviewing songs. You have an open read to any genre and an eclectic taste in music. Keep doing your thang man, I will keep tuning in. Well done. Very well done.
I love this reaction. I was expecting the usual praise for the vocals particularly the chorus. But your commentary and your respectful silence/shock to realization that he was no longer alive said EVERYTHING! Keep em comming!
Ha. Again you're reviewing stuff I love. AIC best group ever best sound ever! Early 90's was a great time to be in college.
Yeah me too👌
BRO! You are hearing what is my opinion one of the greatest bands ever! Thank you for covering AIC! Great channel and wish you the best. Keepem coming! Staley is so dearly missed😓 damn that guy could sing, very unique vocals! Absorb the moments of hearing one of the best!
Though Layne Staley has passed. Jerry Cantrell sings some of their songs too. They have a new singer now who sounds just like Layne and they still make great music. You should check out Jerry Cantrell's solo career. Song called "cut you in" by Jerry Cantrell
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to see Alice In Chains live in the early 90's..Layne was healthy and Fine as hell!! Talented he put every ounce of his performance to his audience!!! 🤩💜❤️💗
Also check out Mad Season, Layne's side project. Great stuff!!
Jamal is among the first, if not the first, legitimate reactionary. He is sincerely into understanding the meaning behind the music and the videos the artists sought to portray and convey. UA-cam is littered with copycat opportunists who have little regard for much other than notoriety and exposure. Jamal is a significant mainstay on this platform.
Love your channel, man. You have genuine reactions and always offer a variety of genres. You respect music and the impact it has on us all, no matter our color, ethnic background, or socio-economic status. You keep it real. You have a great message and I enjoy your work. Keep it up. From Alabama.
Pearl jam-MTV Unplugged "Black" pleaseeee... Pulll up the lyrics
That's amazing.....that passion.
tiffany lara this!
Blackie Lawless un plugged and Pearl Jam oozed out all over little Bobby Dillons shoe so he gave him that crippling space cheese from Rob Zombie. Takes mmmme back
Yeah he died my guy! Overdose 😭 he is one of my favorite writers! I relate to a lot of his music! Btw love your videos I make everyone watch w me.
Absolutely amazing in concert....Layne was perfect....his voice unforgettable...I'm so blessed to have been able to truly witness such an incredible talent...love you still ...Layne 💕💕💕💕💕💕
The original singer Layne Staley was such an amazing singer! RIP to yet another great artist! I did just recently see them LIVE, the new lead singer is also amazing! But such a tragedy. 😔
The crazy thing is, my brother is a very talented musician, and ironically, when he did an Alice in Chains song, I suddenly realized, how he eerily could make his voice sound just like Layne's AND he looks JUST like Layne in certain music videos.
Man, what the HELL ever happened to real music. Harsh and raw. Alice
the big 4 Grunge bands, were arguably: Nirvana-w/Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam-w/Eddie Vedder, Soundgarden -w/Chris Cornell, Alice In Chains-w/Layne Stayley.
Dude the live version of this song is amazing
Mad season- river of deceit
Amazing song with the same singer....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I am sooooo glad that you listened to this. Everything about it is absolutely legendary. Soooo glad you appreciated it.
Thanks for reacting to this song. One of my all time favorites.
Sometimes we just get the Great ones for a short time. There is a long list! They tells us their story and move on.
The song Nutshell by them is my favorite. On the Jar of Flies album.
RIP LAYNE STALEY
RIP CHRIS CORNELL
STAY SAFE EDDIE VEDDER
Check out "Got Me Wrong" from the Sap EP. It's awesome as well!!!
listen to their Jar of Flies ep. Acoustic heart wrenching stuff in there.
one of the greatest Guitar solos of all time - Cantrell is the man
Layne Staley died alone in his apartment in April 2002.
Seriously, u can thank me later😉 Much ♥️ from Bama 🙋 💕
PS: All members of Pearl Jam are still Alive💯
Thanks👍🏾
ROLL TIDE!!!! 🐘🐘🏈🏈😃😃
React to Love Hate Love live at the Moore theater in Seattle please
Great group . Layne's voice is amazing . Their songs deep . Some of the lyrics are prophetic . Losing two members heart breaking . Layne towards the end was in very rough shape . You can see it and yet he fell thru the cracks . In the 90 's groups wrote their own music and sang it . No covers . You lose quite a bit when it's not your music . I love music . I go way back before rock . Listen to blues ect . It is great a new generation is listening to Alice In Chains . Nobody can imitate them . Love your reactions . Rock
Yes!
So GLAD YOU'VE Discovered it !
Do Would or Them Bones by Alice in Chains both great songs
This song was my introduction to Alice in Chains and it's been a love affair ever since !
Mine too. I remember listening to this masterpiece on repeat all day long when I came across the band back then.
I love this band so much, when he died I was heartbroken. Such a talented man and such a talented band.
You should react to Alice in chains "Love Hate Love " live at the Moore
Let's do Tripod album next ! Alice In Chains - Again ;)
i love you brother. i know man. i know how this song makes you feel. you are a genuinely good and decent human being. it is a pleasure to watch you from afar. i am a true fan of yours. thank you for what you do
Layne Staley is probably the most talented rock vocalist of his generation. Such a small guy with such a large voice. I'm so glad I got to see AIC live before Layne passed, it was epic.
Been creeping for a while and saw this video and subscribed. Please my brotha, react to Alice in Chains "Shame in You" its a very powerful song but a lot of reactors missed it.
Finally someone else appreciates that track!!!!
You should try rotten apple and them bones by AIC.
Your responses are so spot on and genuine on the videos.....thanks I subscribed
obviously there are many great guitarists.....nothing more satisfying to the soul than the sound of a jerry cantrell guitar solo.....quality
Lane did die. Another great song that features his vocal talents is "Would"
React Request: Soundgarden (with Chris Cornell) - Spoonman
Amazing Composition and Masterfully Done Song.......Phenominal 🎼🎼🎼
Seattle Rock/Grunge was so huge in the early 90's with Bands like this Nirvana,Pearl jam etc man I miss the 90's 💯
