I use baking soda almost daily for a variety of chores. I bake, clean my sinks and drains, sprinkle some in each load of laundry, and have added it to any homemade laundry detergent, I've made. I've also used it on my hair. It will clean the top of glass stoves. It's a miracle powder. I buy it by the bags and keep it religiously. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Hello Angela, I’m so glad I found your videos! I’m learning a lot - never thought cleaning videos could be so entertaining! I just read the comment from Megan, the young mother who is so overwhelmed, wanting to improve the situation in her home. I feel so for her and think I understand some of what she is going through. She’s working hard to give her son a good and happy life, but things in her household got away from her, and the weight of depression and guilt make it hard to tackle anything. I must tell you that one of the first videos of yours that I watched was the one where you spoke about how to clean when living with depression. It was such a service. I wonder how many other viewers were grateful, as I was, for your understanding and your realistic advice. No guilt, no pressure. Just wisdom and patience. I hope that Megan will find it reassuring, and may take some steps toward her goals while we learn together as a community. You never know where you might find kindred spirits! Thanks again.

Another tip: Works great for cleaning the stove and oven. Mix with just enough water to make a paste, which you then smear over the entire surface to be cleaned. Let it sit for about an hour, then scrub off with a wet scrubbie-sponge. Spritz with a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar and wipe off the last of the residue. I started using baking soda to clean my oven after cancer treatment left me with sensitive lungs, and I didn't want to deal with chemicals like Easy Off.

Angela, the use of baking soda for cooking beans is to soften them by breaking down cell walls. This is why it is also used to make jams. The BS in beans reduces the time of cooking and accelerates the release of a certain category of sugars which provoke the build up of gases in our belly by bacteria. Soaking the beans in water for long periods eliminates these sugars as well as the anti-nutritional compounds common in beans. The beans don't have gas, only the sugars that intestinal bacteria love this producing gas. 😉

My grandma told me it was to reduce flatulence. Which it does because the sodium bicarbonate aids in the absorption of liquids into the beans so your body isn't trying to do the job (bloating you and making you go poot)

I’ve used a baking soda with a bit of water paste on my car. Parked under a tree that unfortunately dripped tiny drops of something like sap? Just dozens of dots all over the car. Nothing worked. Finally, with nothing to lose, I thought of baking soda. Made the paste and rubbed with the corner of a damp cloth and all the sap drops came off with very little rubbing. And zero scratching the paint or finish of the car.

Another popular hack is to mix it with acrylic paint to make a gritty consistency and paint glass jars to give it a textured look.

Yes, Cindy! I bought a glass vase from the Dollar Tree, mixed some baking soda with a beige acrylic paint, painted the vase, added some faux floral for decoration and it looks like something as nice as something from Pier One 😛

Your Enthusiasm is infectious! I have never seen the shake or either and I'm very excited I always buy it and big bags and now I have a proper container to put it in! I like to clean my sinks out with it I put it in and then pour vinegar on top of it and it cleans the drains.

Years ago I was on medication that caused gum problems. So, the doctor told me to try brushing my teeth with baking soda, salt and water. Boy did it work wonders!

Best stain remover ever: baking soda, dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Mix to form a paste and work into fabric let sit and wash. Works wonders! Also can be used as under arm deodorant just apply some dry powder and you’re good to go 👍

Truth about the deodorant part. No underarm should ever smell. Baking soda is more reasonable, then deodorant itself.
Baking soda can actually cause rashes or even burns to the under arms.
I love hummingbirds and have several feeders hanging outside of my windows. I use a baking soda/water paste to clean the pan I use to make the nectar. It cleans out all of the food residue, soap and stuff that they shouldn't have in their nectar. And I rinse the feeders with baking soda and water.

One of my favorites is baking soda for burnt-on food, especially in a stainless steel pot. You know how you start out heating up leftovers on a low flame and figure you can do a quick task in another room in the meantime? Forget that, it never works!
Stainless steel heats so quickly and when you get back to the kitchen not only do you not have anything to eat, the food is burnt/stuck to the pan. Ugh!!! I've done this a couple of times.
The easiest way to clean the pot is to pour out any liquid and lose food. Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda paste over the bottom/burned areas. Let it sit for an hour or so, then rinse out. Repeat as necessary until all scorched parts are gone. Shiny as the sun. This sure beats scrubbing your fingers raw with a steel wool soap pad. Works every time! Now if I could just learn to stay in the kitchen and wait for the food. :)

My mother lived to be 91 years old. The oldest of six children, born in 1925. You have to remember that way back then, there were no cleaning products as there are today. So, they were stuck with using things like vinegar, baking soda, etc.

Lots of "hacks" recomend mixing baking soda and vinegar, that is a waste of money. That lovely foam is the acid and base reacting with each other, not cleaning anything.
Baking soda should NOT be used in cat litter,it aggravates cystitis, especially in neutered males. It make the urinary tract more basic and makes it easier for bacteria to cause infections and form urinary stones.

Thanks for these hacks! I always learn something I never knew from you, Angela!! ....this time it’s that it can be used as an exfoliator and on the scalp in the shower. I also have just sprinkled my dishwasher with it as you’ve shown and will run that tonight! My favorite uses for baking soda is as a laundry booster and it’s an effective cleaner for brightening my Corian kitchen sink and countertops. Hope your day is a great one!

I’ve been making my own baking soda shakers for years. I use empty spice jars. They are perfect. Awesome mini size, and they have the shaker top. I have one in almost every room. Especially useful in bathrooms. No need to buy that hard to find product….just for the fancy label. 😉

Every time I shower, I use baking soda I keep in the shower, to clean a section of my tiled shower walls (very tiny tiles with lot of grout). Only a small section every shower, like an 1/8 of the shower walls - like bottom front section, then upper front section, ect. And since I'm older now, I don't have to hurt my back trying to clean the entire shower walls at once. I also use Professor Amos toilet bowl cleaner (not toxic) for hard water and rust stains on porcelain tub and stainless bathtub fixtures - put it on for a few minutes and wipe them away. No scrubbing required. I had tried everything and nothing worked... Don't use on anything porous. I really appreciate you !
I love your idea of cleaning small sections of the shower at each shower. What a novel and effective way to clean so you're not doing it all at once and also so it all gets cleaned regularly. Brilliant!

My mom used to make us gargle with baking soda water when we had sore throats. Love #2…the empty cheese container. I use baking soda all the time for everything. I also use it with lemon juice to clean oven in between oven cleaner cleaning. I like to dump it down drains and then pour vinegar down for foaming cleaner to freshen. I take the 30 day old boxes from fridge/freezer and dump them in my cleaning baking soda bin to get double duty from it. I add it to each load of laundry and each load in dishwasher. Love baking soda!

We were a family of 9 and when we ran out of toothpaste ,it was the good old stand by …. Baking soda! Leaves your breath feeling fresh and clean without all the additives of 21 century mouth cleaners. I use it today for my hygiene ♥️ it!

My neighbor was having new carpeting installed in her house and asked me if I had any baking soda. She said the professional installers requested it. Now I knew baking soda had many uses but this interested me as it didn’t relate to anything I knew. I told her to let me know what or how they were going to use it. The installers said it prevented moisture build up and used both boxes I shared with her! It really is an amazing product at a very affordable price.

Ooh you have to be very gentle when brushing your teeth with baking soda, it can etch and damage tooth enamel. Always best to dissolve it first.

I loved the video! I use baking soda for so many things too. My favorite is to clean cookware- sprinkle & scrub away. My newest idea has been to put some in a paper coffee filter and tie it up with string to make a small sachet. These I added to a box of old books that smelled musty. I sealed box back up and will check again in a few weeks. I hope smell will be gone! Thanks for the awesome videos!

I do use it for brushing my teeth. It is also great as a carpet freshener and on upholstery...just vacuum it up after a little while. I use it in the kitchen to remove tea stains from my China.

Rub with finger on damp china, stoneware or serving dishes to remove marks from knives, tomato stains and such which soap can't wash off. i also soak crockpot with hot soapy water for about 20 minutes then wipe out with baking soda. I keep b soda in a shaker near the sink where it is also handy in case of stove fire.

On my stovetop, to get rid of the stuck on stuff on pots and oven trays, in the washing machine with a little bit of vinegar (both help pull the oils out from laundry liquids and cut drying times, clothes feel better too). Mix it with warm water, little bit of dish soap, and a splash of vinegar and it does wonders for fingerprints on walls. In a bowl in the fridge for odour control too

When your favorite shampoo feels like it’s not working anymore, instead of switching brands or using an expensive “clarifying” shampoo- pour a small pile of baking soda into your hand and mix it it with your regular shampoo. Massage it in and let it sit for an extra minute or two. Voila. Clarified hair and your favorite shampoo works like new.

This is absolutely fantastic at cleaning up the grease and carbon that might get out of hand if you over- bake (or maybe .....forgot?) Pour water over bottom of pan just enough to cover the grease, stuck on meat, burned carbon. Sprinkle baking soda rather heavily over the water. You don't want a paste but you also don't want soup. The baking soda will sink to the bottom. You don't have to match the soda with the level of water. Put the pan back in the oven and bake the water at around 300 degrrees for 30 minutes. You want the water to evaporate so that you are left with a light brown crust. Cool so that you can handle the pan comfortably without hot pads. Rinse off. Yep. Just rinse off.

Hi Angela. I need...... Something. I've seen alot of your videos about cleaning with depression... Im a single mother of an 8 yr old boy. His father was in prison and wasn't around his whole life and he was killed in 2019, so Im used to going it alone. Problem is.. My home and car are a complete mess. Its so bad. I tell myself everyday that Im going to clean. I want my son to grow up in a clean organized space and I want him to learn to be clean and organized for adulthood.... Angela. I just cant seem to do it. I know in my head the benefits and reasons and my intentions are good but I just cant seem to make myself DO! Im drowning in clutter and mess and I see it.. I just cant seem to actually get up and make things happen. Its all I can do everyday just to wake up and put on a positive attitude for my kid and go to work and convince my peers that I want to engage. The thread im hanging on to is about broken. I NEED to clean. How do I do that at this point? Do you know what I mean?
Megan, I am sorry to hear about your struggles. I just borrowed a book from the library by Dana K. White entitled "Decluttering at the speed of life" which might be helpful. She found her house in a similar state and felt overwhelmed. She recommends getting a black garbage bag and picking up the trash. Grab a box that you can donate and fill it with things you don't need or want or that your son has outgrown and then drop it off at a donation center. Repeat as often as necessary. Your son is old enough to help and will learn as you do it together. Keep going. Start with your car or one drawer and then do one more. Little by little you will make progress and see improvement. Dana has a UA-cam channel as well and I have found other channel like the Minimal Mom and others to be helpful as well.

Megan..challenge yourself and set a timer...turn on some music...set the timer for 15 min per room...race around picking up...as someone else mentioned..get a garbage bag for trash..hang on a door knob/stairway post so you dont have to reach to floor to put trash in it!!..sort things into tubs/laundry baskets...mark these baskets....with index cards and tape...when timer goes off go to next room..etc!!...take a break then put everything away!!...remind yourself and your child...EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE!!...IF necessary...place a post it note on the outside of drawers/ cabinets to remind everyone where things go..together you will get there...then just maintain daily and weekly! Good Luck!!

Hi Megan, I hope you got it sorted. If you're still struggling, try the methods these kind people have shared but use fun music to jump and dance to. Make it a game with your little boy, don't be too fussy about how well the job's done (starting is the thing and you'll both get better with time) and have a little treat at the end, even if it's just sitting down with a cup of tea and reading a story together.

Baking soda has a pH of around 9, and your skin surface pH is around 5. I wouldn't wear gloves to handle dry baking soda, or for incidental things, but if I were going to be using baking soda paste for a large cleaning job, I would wear a pair of gloves to protect my hands. I have a doctorate in biochemistry and years of lab work have dried out my hands badly. Some people tolerate baking soda just fine, but I have also seen people complaining about irritation, skin darkening, and redness, which are signs of mild chemical burns. Personally, I would not apply baking soda to my skin, nor use it for things like cleaning my oven without at least protective gloves. I also wear eye protection for cleaning most things, but that has less to do with cleaning solutions than the debris and dust. I also keep an eye irrigation bottle at home for emergencies, CVS sells them for pretty cheap in the US.

I use the Arm&Hammer laundry detergent as well. The Fresh Burst scent is great and it gets my clothes clean and fresh for much less than other big name brands.

I have some in a shaker container, similar like. Our home is smaller so it just travels throughout our home. We do use it in our laundry, fridge, up and down. And before we vacuum, we dust the carpet for about one with it.

I make a toothpaste 1:1 ratio of coconut oil and baking soda. Works so well that my dentist asked me what product I had changed to, also use in cleaning as demonstrated in this clip, plus shoes, make my own laundry powder using it. ALSO, it is great to use on a pan for anything burnt on the bottom. Add water to cover the bottom and a heaped tablespoon baking soda. Gently heat the water (it will foam up a bit). Turn off the heat after a minute or two and leave to sit a while. Then clean as normal and it should have softened up enough to remove.

A useful suggestion would be a refillable container that could be used instead of the 1lb boxes to leave in fridge or around the house and could be refilled from a big bag. Throwing out the box once a month seems not to be in the spirit of recycling plus is a lot more costly than the 13.5lb bag. I have accumulated a lot of coffee mugs, I'll try filling some and leave them around the house. I hope others have suggestions too.
Good point. A mason jar filled with baking soda with a pantyhose for a lid (capped with a mason jar ring) would allow for regular refills and replace the box and keep you from adding boxes to the landfills. Thanks for sharing this idea with us.

I pour a cup of baking soda down my drains and let that sit for a bit, then I hit it with vinegar for the bubbly action to "scrub" the parts I can't reach down the pipes, then I chase it with boiling hot water. If there's a clog, it breaks it up. If there's not, it keeps it clear. And its a total drain deodorizer 😎

Great info but one caveat. Many people (I am one of those) get rashes from baking soda. So try it on a small area TWICE (because sometimes the sensitivity only shows up on the second exposure) before using on your skin. If you are sensitive be careful when cleaning to rinse well.

I use baking soda on the top of litter in the cat's litter boxes. She's fine with it. Every now and then, I put a mixture of baking soda and vinegar in with a laundry load. Colors, even black, come out so much more bright and clear. It's like a filling film is lifted from the fabric. You do have to be judicious in using it, though. If you use it too often or too much, it can thin the fabric to threadbare.

I use baking soda and citrus, usually grapefruit, to make a paste. Put it on my bathroom shower doors and wait about 10 minutes. It removes scale very, very well.

In two separate cups, fill one with baking soda and the other cup with white distilled vinegar, each cup should be about 8oz each. Pour the vinegar into the cup with the baking soda, it will immediately bubble up. As the mixture goes down the drain, it cleans the crud out of the pipes.

Baking soda/magic eraser works well on cleaning glass top cookstoves and for cleaning the top of toasters.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing this. The key is to only use the Magic erasers when wet. They are in fact a fine sandpaper and will scratch some surfaces if used improperly.
Yep! I wash my hair with it, brush my teeth, scour the sinks, remedy slow drains, run it through my washing machine and dishwasher, deodorize lunch boxes, refrigerators, but, the best thing (at least to me) is that, used with a drop of dish liquid, it keeps my white Corning Ware white. (because it was my mother's and it's important to me)

I love baking soda for so many reasons. You gave me a few more. Thanks. I use it for cleaning, scrubbing and deodorizing everywhere in my house. It's natural, it works well and I don't like to use all the specialty bottles of cleaners on the market. Too much bleach and unknown chemicals. Simple is better for me and the environment.
