Frank Zappa with Pink Floyd ♫ Interstellar overdrive
.
Belgium "Festival Actuel" october 25, 1969
.

The first participation of artists in concerts outside of Pink Floyd is found in Amougies Actuel Festival, Belgium, October 25, 1969, when Frank Zappa joined the band in performance of the song Interstellar Overdrive, a new version of about twenty minutes .
.
Due to the increasing complexity of the music of Pink Floyd over the years many musicians are hired to play concerts in what had been recorded in the studio with the utmost fidelity.
.
The beginning of these investments is reflected in the tour Atom Heart Mother, when the suite is the same name played with the aid of a full orchestra and choir. Given the costliness of a tour with a similar amount of musicians, then the number of shift workers is still low: in 1973 he was hired the saxophonist Dick Parry, who also participates in the subsequent tour, except those of The Wall and A Momentary Lapse of Reason , which is replaced by Scott Page.
Animals in the tour Snowy White was hired as a guitarist, and appears in the "surrogate band" that opens the concerts of The Wall, along with Peter Wood, Willie Wilson and Andy Bown. In A Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell tour keyboardist Jon Carin is instead, Guy Pratt replaces Waters, Tim Renwick becomes the support guitarist and Gary Wallis on percussion.
.
Although some singers, including Clare Torry, Sam Brown, Durga McBroom and Carol Kenyon participate in these tours. In the Live 8 Finally, playing Tim Renwick, Jon Carin, Dick Parry and Carol Kenyon.

I was there in Amougies, it was a very special festival mixing rock and jazz music, and Zappa was the major event of all as he jammed with every band playing including Floyd, Archie shepp, Don Cherry etc.. moment of history.
I was there in this great big circus tent, it was fucking cold. Zappa was the MC & giged with most of the bands. remember pretty things came on late one night when everyone was asleep shouting "Wake up". spent winter in Maroc, spring in Ibiza, then holland for Kagenfest then India. believe this was the last of the 60s
I was there ,it was amazing ,we where freezing cold , everybody on each other to keep warm, they did play all night, it was a music revolution ! nobody was the same after this !
Holy shit !!! Gong , Soft Machine , PinkFloyd , Zappa And Daevid Allen On a same place. FUCKING epic man
+Eduardo Gutiérrez Castillo and probably all this for $5[ those were the days]
It's easy i'll break it down for you... Zappa's playing the parts that sound like Zappa. Gilmour's playing the parts that sound like Gilmour.
Frank Zappa performing a song by Syd Barret. I think i may be hallucinating on acid, cause this seems fucking unreal. Screw commercial succes, Zappa and Floyd are the most original artists in the history of rock. Both of their work is so unique and so bloody awesome. Piper at the gates of Dawn and We're only in it for the money are some of the most important albums in progressive rock. I gotta say the styles complement each other in this song.
+Dingo D. Manhunter Blah blah blah. If Sid didn't go nuts so David could take over guitar nobody would EVER be discussing Pink Floyd. PF started the day David took over.
+Jeff Isles Syd Barrett was the heart and soul of Pink Floyd...
Jeff Isles That's why Piper at the gates of dawn sold sold more than every other floyd album from the 60's. They made their best album paying tribute to Barret, so your opinion doesn't matter.
+Jeff Isles David Gilmour made "Interstellar Overdrive" such a bore. He seriously has no skill with jazz-influenced improvisation. The only saving grace on guitar here is Zappa. Syd's influenced a lot of musicians in the 60's and every decade that's followed. Syd may not have been as good a technical player than Gilmour, but he sure as hell played more than scales.
+Dingo D. Manhunter Well... Knowing that only a 'few' albums were out in the 60's it's not really "impressive"... BTW, I dont't judge quality of the album, I love "all" pink floyd periods (until the wall included). I just say that TPATGOD best sellers in the 60s is "mechanical"...
Zappa's fluid ability to play almost anything, w/ anyone, or anything, even a bicycle, is amazing if not only for pure experimentation. Has yet to let me down, &/or inspire me to greatness.
I wasn't there. I don't know anything. But I've tuned my ears for many years listening to FZ & also Pink Floyd. I hear both at work here. If someone recorded a sound check or an informal jam, whatever. This is a real revelation. Who'd've guessed such a gem was awaiting discovery! Thanks, amigo.
this is making my eardrums hard....would not know how to act if i was at this concert....awesome!
*correct*
There is a Zappa interview on youtube where he says he was at the concert but did not play with Pink Floyd. I would have given one of my nuts to see Zappa play onstage with PF.
Wonderful interpretation of this piece. I've heard a lot of bootlegs of the Floyd from this time period, but I don't recall ever hearing a version of "Interstellar Overdrive" like this before. PF sound much tighter than usual, with some really interesting percussive noises coming from Roger and some fantastic drumming from Nick. The Floyd really stepped up their game for Zappa.
i was there !!!!!!!!! a long long time ago !!!
jacmen Me too !
Wow, it is 2012, I am 54 .... What a concert! Gong, AEC, Soft Machine and Pink Floyd WITH Zappa!!! bloody hell - it's Soft Cell!
I was born slightly too late - in the middle of a wasteland! What memories.... Gong is touring U.K. soon......
Zappa and Floyd together being epic! Man, I wish there could have been more of this!
That's some psychedelia , unique recording !
The Amougies stuff is from the famous 25Oct69 concert where
Frank Zappa joined the Floyd onstage for a jamming version
of Interstellar Overdrive (unfortunately, there's no video
trace of that particular moment of the festival). The video
footage from Amougies comes from the "Music Power" film shot
by Jerome Laperrousaz. That documentary was shown in some
French cinema theatres in 1970, but very quickly it was
removed from the public circuit (the Floyd was not happy
about the way the music was mixed in the film, and thought
it was not representative of their true sound on stage)
this should be titled Zappasteller overdrive!
I've been listening Pink Floyd since I'm 13 years old. My favorite band since that too, now I'm 21 and discover these....
Best band ever lml
My fucking words cant describe how happy I am to have found this. I cannot believe they worked together live... 1-19-16 MY perspective is changed forever.
That's right you're right . the secret word for tonight in ZAPPADRIVE ;-)Music is the best!!!
..Yes, as the others have noted...Frank Zappa and David Gilmour in interstellar overdrive. This is a rare one. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us.
This is really badass.
Fun fact. In the crowd of this performance was a 15 year old Michael Gira who would go onto create one of the most controversial and influential underground rock bands, Swans. He stated that this live festival was a moment that made him decide to make music. 13 years later, in 1982 Swans was formed in New York City. Just a music fact for all of you out there.
Starting around 3:45 and ending around 6:00, the song morphs from a Pink Floyd groove to a Zappa groove and back to Pink Floyd. Awesome! The guitar lead starting at 11:45 sounds like Zappa, then Gilmore gradually (12:45) takes lead back until near the end.
still love it!!
Now that's a jazz festival line-up!!!
thank`s for posting- have problems to see & hear instellar overdrive- so I am thankfully you posted that song; thank`s (`v`)
Zappa is correct he never played with Pink Floyd! Pink Floyd clearly played with Frank Zappa! Definite Zappadrive!
Art is art, a reflection of reality
J'y étais! Quel souvenir!
This is Zappa with Floyd, the event is talked about in the Captain Beefheart Biography.
Awesome..Zapper and Floyd never seize to amaze me..legends.
Brilliant, thanks for posting!
To my knowledge, Zappa and the Floyd only played once on stage together, and this was at the Bath Blues & Progrock Fest. And that was in 1970.
this is awesome man thanks for the post! I'm no newbie (by ANY friggin measuring stick! ) and yet I have never heard this before. You made my night!
I didn't just hear that.
Fantastic.
Never thought I'd hear Zappa with Floyd, doing SYD. Genius emulating genius. It doesn't get any better! I truly miss them both. We've lost too many of the greatest artists of our generation, too early. I have a new favorite version. Wish I could see the film!
Man who would have ever conceived that us "oldies" would actually be able to see and hear all this groovy shit man! Thank God for UA-cam :D
I've been a Zappa fan for 35 years and I would stake my entire record collection on this being an actual recording of Zappa playing guitar around the Uncle Meat era. Now, whether he's actually playing with Pink Floyd I'm not qualified to say ! (but it probably is !)
This is great - two of my favorite artists/bands ever - together! Zappa rules (and 'Floyd is a good runner-up :-)!
Holy mackeral! Nice find; thanks for sharing!
The two best things that ever happened to music jamming together.
I find it just a little touching that despite all of Zappa's criticism of the psychedelic movement, he was willing and able to join in on a performance as indulgent and fun as this. Solid proof that FZ did respect his peers!
I think I just SHIT MY PANTS!!!!!! Beyond amazing!!!!!! Whoever downloaded this for UA-cam is officially AWESOME!!!!
talk about an amazing lineup for that festival. You got Pink Floyd along with Soft Machine, Gong, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Wow, wow and another wow! Thanks SOOOOO much for sharing; did not know that one of my fav PF (dare I say it?) anthems was performed with the legendary Frankie Zappa.
RE: Frank not actually playing, but just being on stage. Frank could deny all he wanted, but the recording speaks for itself; that is Frank on guitar. Most obviously around 4:30 - 6:30 and 11:45 to 13:00. I've been addicted to Zappa way too long to not recognize his signature style and sound.
Especially @11:45!!!
no doubt about it. that's Frank.
Yep dude! I agree... besides David or Syd never played like that, that I have ever heard, it's Frank! I am a big Zappa fan and PF fan ( probably my favorites along with 'The Stones') 100% Rick Wright and Nick on drums. at 11.50....100% Frank! it may be Syd in some parts, but Frank is there!
I hate most of Zappa's music but his guitar playing is incredible
Rich Latta How many Zappa albums have you heard? His albums are quite different from each other. If you find his guitar playing incredible I know one set you should like: "Shut Up and Play Your Guitar"!
Thank you for posting that, and for those doubting it is Zappa, it sounded obvious to me
Awesomeous maximous!
What I would not have given to see this live~!
Happy to have encountered this !!!
14 minutes and 46 seconds of pure rock history
What a drive.
Oh yeah; thank you backto1967 for putting it out there :-)
Thanks for observing that in this photo, from that angle, FZ & NM look very similar. Good catch. Quite amusing.
I had no idea this collaboration existed! Thanks for posting. And I considered myself a Zappaphile! Was Syd Barrett still a Floydian at this time? Ha Ha. What was hidden from the dark must reveal to the light.
In a video of this same Pink Floyd concert you can see a guy very similar to Syd, it is only for a few seconds but the resemblance is really strange sorry for my bad english
Classe!
Z A P P A is groovin' , as usual. is , on any ground , best to listen TO IT On PURPOSE !!! WHAT IS NEW...
Seen Zappa 3 times and PF 2 times but i think.I think coolest show was PF totaly awsome HEHE
Very fun, very enjoyable- but I would pay real money to hear Zappa jamming with Soft Machine and Art Ensemble Of Chicago- that must have been intriguing.
Yes!
thank you backto 1967... please send it to me or more :D
Interesting things happening in Belgium nowadays as well.I dig these materials from ancients undergrounds, used to collect bootlegs.
Belgium is a lot less boring now.
According to Pauline Butcher's excellent book, The Floyd had already visited Frank's famous Log Cabin in LA on at least one if not more than one occasion, as did many artists from the UK. Jagger Beck and Clapton come to mind. The feeling given is that they were already on friendly terms before the gig. I can only imagine Frank and Roger having an intense political conversation over endless cigarettes in the kitchen. Also at some point Roger had American and Mothers groupie Pamela Zarubica (the second Suzy Creamcheese) as a regular girlfriend.
Also later Mason was quoted as saying that few could perform with them as guests but Frank was one and that what he did was "terribly correct". (I love that)
Actually the Floyd's backing is not far removed from what Frank just came off with the late 1960’s Mothers with their "lewd pulsating rhythm" during Franks solo spots.
Epic.
holy shit it really is him!!! that is something else...
Yeah thanks i found it,peace
YES!
Zappa e Barrett Assieme?...
!WOW!
thankgod frank zappa's life and mine intertwinwed!!!!
Brilliant!
How could anyone not remember playing with the best band in the world? Are you sure Zappa didn't do drugs?!
thanks for the upload~~~
Gong, Soft Machine,....very nice.
Got my thumb!
A shame ,Zappa couldn`t talk with Barrett about W-E-A-S-E-L-S...
That first chord sends chills up my spine
great, after min 10 it sounds like The Doors with a good Zappa Solo afterwards, I like it.
Pink Floyd feat. Frank Zappa: Interstellar Zappadrive. It's the name of this album
The most interesting version since the original!
an interviewer of Wyatt for R.STone said he sang all the notes with a John Coltrane sax solo that came on the radio.. dang!
Saw a photo in a book of Zappa on stage with them. Never thought I'd hear it...
I see Frank Zappa having a hard read on just what the floyd was doing, He adapt's though and that is typical of Mr Zappa.
Long live Belgium!
Syd > Zappa. This would be the greatest performance ever, if only Syd was still around.
+yo mama I know, right? Gilmour sounds like he doesn't know what the hell to do, despite playing "Interstellar Overdrive" for over a year at this point. He was no replacement for Syd when it came to jazz-influenced improvisation. I love Zappa, though, and he manages to do his best despite the aimlessness.
Zappa really gets going around 3:53
and they did jam together... Zappa jammed with all the artists at Mougins, including gSoft Machine
The song you're thinking of is called "Who Needs The Peace Corps" and can be found on the unparalleled "We're Only In It For The Money" album :-)
it's not a concert.. it's a sound check. zappa was the festival producer and decided to do the sound check.
Zappa did it with a little help from some very talented musicians. He was the genius never be anyone like him two rows back Felt Forum. Halloween.
Release the film!
"The festival was filmed by Jerome Laperrousaz, and the film was to be called MUSIC POWER. Due to objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn’t been properly secured, the film was never officially released.”
dangerousminds.net/comments/when_frank_zappa_jammed_with_pink_floyd_10_25_69
There is a video on youtube of Frank Zappa being asked if he played with Pink Floyd at this festival. He says he was on stage with them but did not play with them.
As far as I know, this festival was filmed by Jerome Lapperousaz, who also directed the movie "Continental Circus" which featured music by Gong, so it may be him who owns the footage. Must be worth a king's ransom by now !
Another bit of evidence: the announcer (not heard in this clip) delivers the introduction for Pink Floyd by naming each member, their roles, then repeats their introduction, "The Pink Floyd WITH...Frank Zappa!" Of course, he could have just been tuning up with them and this was somehow worthy of announcing the fact by an MC, only to have him leave the stage again. I think not. As well, the guitar work in there contains phrasing Gilmour had never included in any other IO version I've heard.
this far out, man !!
it is indeed Zappa. There's a picture of him on stage w/ the Floyd in the book 'Echoes -the complete history of Pink Floyd', by Glenn Poovey.
Ok, now I see it was in Amougies. ;-)
