Saw a lot of bad reviews on this gun. Purchased it (due to some of the positive reviews) and have not had a single misfire or failure to feed. Its been a great gun and I really like it. It is tough to field strip; but I knew that going in. Thanks for the video.
I got one of the 2nd gen R51, it shot fine for a few hundred rounds, then caught up a few times, sent it back to Remington, and it came back flawless. They gave me new mags, which makes me think the springs were too stiff and shoved the loads a little high. Not only that, I noticed that Remington 9 mm rounds are slightly shorter than some and almost an 1/8th inch shorter than Winchester 9s. That's probably the biggest reason they jammed. Everyone was trying everything. The Remington rounds never hung up, others did. Too bad Remington and users didn't notice this before Remington went out of business and we didn't get to enjoy this gun for the neat little firearm it is. Anyway, that's what I learned. Run Remington bullets in this Remington gun and it'll run a mile . A2
I'm amazed at the number of videos reviewing this gun that show the absolute most difficult way you could possibly think of to field strip it. Remington has a terrific video right here on UA-cam that shows the proper technique to field strip and reassemble the firearm.
@Paul Curry LOL. There is a reason you have such a hard time finding people of intelligence. ;>) "Only intelligent person you have read so far?" LMAO. Silly wabbit, how would YOU know?
I think the MAC review is a bit dramatic..Kinda of like he wanted to hate it. I got one this month. A lot of FMJ and HP and no issues. And I actually think the field strip and reassembly is pretty cool after some practice.
R51 was probably the final nail in Remington coffin, but the model 700 Rifle put most of them in it. Hopefully the newer one has better success, it definitely couldn't do any worse.
A real odd duck because it has the advantage of a FIXED barrel for accuracy(no bushings to wear)however; it can handle high pressure ammo, but with one CAVEAT!!$# IT HAS TO HAVE SAMMI CERTIFIED AMMO!!$? Cheap thin non-sammi brass can NOT take the pressures- it will jam!!#😳😉😁PS-I have 2$$!?
When dissembling it’s easy enough to just put the collar in the slot tilted up while you already have it pulled back at the beginning. It’s now where near as hard as it looks here after a couple of field strips.
I think the person who would enjoy this likes to tinker and has lots of patience. Now a days I don’t thinks most folks would enjoy it as compared to the more modern stuff. I’d be more interested in getting the original. Thanks for all the work & posting 👍🏼
I got a gen 2 and it shoots better then my friends Glock 43 and lady Taurus and all 9mm less recoil and can tell a difference with the fixed barrel but that trigger is so crisp
@Paul Curry So now I have to explain to you how to LIE too now idiot? OK.... If you are going to lie, AT LEAST HAVE THE BASIC COMMON SENSE TO TELL A LIE WHERE THE PROOF AGAINST YOUR LIE ISN'T ALREADY OUT THERE FOR ALL TO SEE BEFORE YOU EVEN OPEN YOUR IDIOTIC MOUTH TWIT. I HAVE ONLY COMPLAINED ABOUT THE R-51 FIELD STRIP (JUST LIKE SO MANY OTHERS WHO CAN CHEW GUM AND WALK AT THE SAME TIME). I HAVEN'T COMPLAINED ABOUT ITS SHOOTABILITY, ASTHETICS, SIGHT PICTURE OR SUCH. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IMBECILE! LEARN TO PUT THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE TOGETHER LIKE YOU CLAIM YOU CAN DO WITH THE R-51 MORON! Everyone else can do it. So again, I have to educate you on simple facts and the finer points of walking and chewing bubble gum at the same time. But of course idiots like you just don't learn (nor would you admit the truth even if you could learn). Now that you have started to go and see these other videos (obviously you lied as usual when you tried to make it seem like you saw all these videos before), you are just starting to see the utter fool, stupid idiot, ignoramus, and COMPLETE MORON you've been making yourself into the whole time...and instead of just admitting to your ignorance and sheer folly, NOW you are just trying to obfuscate and lie your way out of it. Sorry Charlie,...you stupidly painted yourself into this corner with your false bravado, ignorance and impetuous idiocy-even after I tried to teach and educate you on the finer points of not being a retard. Well,...I guess that's what I get for trying to teach horse sense to a complete jackass.... UNICORN MORON. Try again...
I don't even think about it anymore..I don't understand why its so hard for people to take down ? There's good instructions once you get the hang of it it's easy!
So...”field strip” is a bit of a misnomer here. “Workbench freestyle rassle cleaning” might be more accurate. Who green lights these Remington projects? It’s only interesting as a curiosity.
And here I thought full length guide rod 1911's were a pain in the ass to field strip. LOL! The longest video you've done so far I think. Great job GB!
Haha! I will never forget when my first handgun (1911) came back from the custom shop with a full length guide rod. Suddenly a quick takedown became calling a few friends. I try to keep the videos short, but felt this gun deserved a video showing the field strip and reassembly. I could have practiced it a bunch of times, but then it wouldn't be real. Most of the time when you see me field strip or shoot a gun it's for the very first time.
2/3 of the video was just trying to get the thing apart and back together again. That's with it being edited too. You stayed on it like a bulldog on a raw steak though. LOL!
Not too much editing, I think the only part I clipped was taking the gun off screen to get the takedown pin back in. The first time I did it the pin went in easy. Turn the camera on and suddenly we've got a rubix cube.
Where in the world are a lot of you getting this break down is so horrible? It is not hard at all, different yes, complicated, no. I love the uniqueness of it. Has eaten all types of ammo for me so far. Pretty cool gun. I think a few channels thought it was the “in thing” to take a dump on this handgun.
Thank you for a very useful review! I too have long wanted one, been frustrated by the recall and all of the bad reviews. But mixed in with those comments in all of the reviews are a few folks that swear they have never had any issues. Sock Puppets from the ,manufacturer? Who knows? I look forward to your range review. Oh, one reviewer uses a hand spring-clip to grasp the barrel rings and finds dis/reassembly easy when it is upside down................................elsullo
Thanks for the tips. I was so disappointed with the initial reports of the gun, but in the long run that didn't kill my desire to enjoy a gun with a different operating system.
@Paul Curry And as usual all you can muster is weak puerile pabulum puke in reply. You DON'T logically explain anything you claim, you rarely respond to the SPECIFIC charges against your idiocy, and then you think you can LIE to cover it all up. You're just like a kid saying the dog ate his homework. No,...all you know is how to manufacture straw man arguments so you can claim others are "jackasses" or "hypocrites" because you were easily proven the ignorant fool and don't want to admit it. No need to change your name. There is nothing more stupid, ignorant and dishonest on God's green Earth than you. Try again...
Definitely a "pain" to assemble/reassemble but how does it function is more important. I really liked the look of this when it first came out but was turned off by all the problems. Are they offering a huge discount on these or a rebate to entice people to buy them? Looking forward to the range session.
They are getting really cheap. You can find for under $300 now. They had a rebate last year too. The new ones seem to be good,...may need a break in period but, they shoot very well. This video doesn't really show how bad the field strip/cleaning process really is though.
Thanks for good video. Found a used R51 in my neck of the woods for $200. Before I commit to it I would like to figure out if it was the first Generation run that they had problems with 2014-2016. Or if this specific gun was the second run after the recall and problems fixed. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to sort it out? (Serial number. Manufacturer stamp. Different parts. I heard the newer ones have set screws for sights that the bad first run did not????!) any help is appreciated. As you say I want a re re release! Lol. Ned In NYS
Pederson the designer, developer, and inventor of the R51 mechanism was according to John Moses Browning a genius and far better gun engineer designer than he Browning! If Perderson's trials rifle for the US prior to WW2 had just a little more time, a tiny fraction of the M1 Garand in money and time, it would have been a world beater. Before you complain that the Pederson used lubricated cases... the FN 5.7x28 round and all the guns for it use lubricated cases based on Pederson's concept though FN (who makes the cases for all the other brands) uses a modern coating similar to teflon, and had to claim Pederson as the originator of the concept... but he did not have the improved materials available to FN so really FN simply changed material. I don't need an "instant, post-purchase safe-queen," but I sure appreciate your videos, Graham. This ain't "Grand Power hard" (to take down), just because you're on camera. This little gun really is genuinely difficult-- more than it should be. Nice try, Remington. "A" for effort and "Deco-Ray Punk" aesthetics. "D" for execution. Sorry...
My father in law has the original model 51. For years he didn't have a magazine and though we have hunted for years and shot targets on occasion he didn't know how much of a nut I was. Anyway the original was a pain to take down as well. Horrible sights but an awesome piece. I think this new one is cool but hard to beat the original
Like anything else in life: it’s easy once you know how ;-)) I can take mine apart and back together lying on my back with it on my chest, no tables or vise grips required! 2020 production and it’s still flawed but I forgive for the fixable design issue (cough silly lip under breech block cough) and applaud Rem for sticking with it when it’s obvious they’ll never recover investment. It’s clunky and large in hand but there’s nothing else like it
Investors: how do we make a gun that is different from all the competition? Remington: They all seem to make high quality pistols. How's about we make one that has zero hope of working!
@Paul Curry Why don't you tell Robin Jacobs how he or she "doesn't know about guns" now eh? Again you demonstrate your inability to comprehend. What about nerve damage in the hands do you not understand Einstein? I've been saying people with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, weak grips, and other problems will have trouble field stripping this gun for the longest, but here you are STILL unable to understand that simple concept. Do you think nerve damage will magically go away just because you show someone an alternate method of field stripping an R-51? Why don't you show a blind man an alternative way to watch TV and see how far you get? Get a frikkin' CLUE! There is a REASON why so many people have criticized the take down/reassembly of this gun...A reason you obviously have no ability to figure out yourself. What about nerve damage do you not understand??? Duh.
@Paul Curry So again, you are trying to convince us that you know more than hundreds of people who all know the R-51 is harder to field strip? These people include everyone from regular casual gun owners all the way up to experts including law enforcement, military, armorers and gun dealers. These people have used THE PROCEDURE PROVIDED IN REMINGTON'S R-51 OWNER'S MANUAL ITSELF! SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING DIFFERENTLY, AND HOW CAN YOU IMPLY THE METHOD IN THE MANUAL IS NOT THE "CORRECT WAY?" Maybe you had medical trratment but, your situation is still different from others. You had to opportunity to play with the R-51 well before your claimed medical issue. It's quite different for people who would have to deal with medical problems FROM DAY ONE. Their issues will never heal either. Big differences that shouldn't be hard to understand even if your claims are really accurate. As for your assertions of the R-51 just being "different" go, an old 1909 Ford model T is different from a brand new 2021 Chevrolet sedan too, but that doesn't mean people are running out to buy old model Ts because they don't care the car has to be hand crank started, and has no power brakes or steering. A person with physical problems can field strip a Mossberg MC1 or Glock 19 way easier and faster than an R-51, OR just purchase a J frame S&W and not have to strip anything! If you knew even a quarter of what you claim about guns I wouldn't need to educate you on these simple obvious facts. Your simple minded ramblings are beyond belief. If you can't understand why a Glock or Sig would be easier to field strip for a person with physical problems (not to mention revolvers) then you are probably too ignorant to understand why auto manufacturers went from manual crank starters to automatic electric starters in cars decades ago. Have you never used a microwave over a conventional oven just because they are "different?" A flintlock is "different" from a Sig or Beretta too but, you don't see modern police and/or military using muzzle loaders just because "they can learn the proper way of loading them" do you? Why don't you use muzzle loaders exclusively instead of even having an R-51 since muzzle loaders are only just "different" then? Wow you are simple minded. People complain about the R-51 being hard to field strip because there are easier alternatives out there. It's not rocket science. Duh. 🤦
@Paul Curry And your failure to comprehend basic analogies continues. The point of the cars was that people are NOT going to waste time with a crank starting a car when they can buy one with an automatic starter. That's why there are no more manually started cars built for the mass market. The same thing goes for a gun. Many people are not going to bother with a gun that's a lot more involved to field strip than all other guns in that category. Gun companies make most of their concealed carry money selling to people who don't have experience and knowledge of guns,...grandma Parker or aunt Bessie-not gun smiths. These people sometimes have trouble with simple field strips like Glocks. I already mentioned the manual instructions were less than ideal a loooong time ago,...now here you come acting like you made a big discovery. The difference between you and I is that I'm honest and knowledgeable enough to admit the take down is the one big Achilles heal of the design no matter what tricks or shortcuts one figures out. There's only so much you can do with a stage coach,...it's never going to out run a race car. No moron, you are just making up that I'm "talking out of my ass" because of your rank ignorance and stupidity. While you pat yourself on the back for coming up with a shortcut for field stripping the R-51 (that's already known about), you have never mentioned that people with physical limitations can use things like a clamp to hold the barrel thus eliminating the need for doing it manually. I HAVE. Just one example of what I know to make the R-51 takedown easier, so you are not impressing me at all. As usual you are a day late and a dollar short. I can only educate you a little at a time...and you're failing miserably. The point is that I still know the big picture, and that's even with shortcuts a Walther PPK/S or Mossberg MC1 is always going to be much easier to field strip than an R-51. It's not rocket science. What you fail to grasp is that people are just going to buy something easier to use. People once bought bikes which were easier than walking,...then cars came and they became the more numerous mode of transportation. Can you ride a bike? If so, did you ride bikes back and forth to work everyday and on road trips just because you could, or did you just drive or fly because they are more easy and practical??? Duh. The same point applies to the R-51. A Glock is way more than 10-15 seconds faster to strip than an R-51. Again, stop getting your information from Hollywood movies! What you don't get is that the "hard way" the experts are doing, is STILL not much worse than those using short cuts. EVEN WITH R-51 SHORCUTS, YOU CAN FIELD STRIP A GLOCK TWO OR THREE TIMES IN THE TIME YOU CAN DO AN R-51 ONCE-AND THAT'S NOT EVEN INCLUDING HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE YOU TO LEARN THE R-51 STRIP COMPARED TO OTHER GUNS. Again, why are you not carrying a flintlock? Don't you know how to use them "the easy way?" Unless you are awarding grandma a million bucks for learning the R-51 fields strip, she's not going to care and is just going to get the S&W J frame. Call her names all you want as she goes home with her new purchase while you look dumb standing in the middle of the parking lot screaming and shaking your fist. Try again...
@Paul Curry No, it's like telling an old lady that she needs to learn how to drive a big rig even though she can simply just buy a Cadillac or Toyota. That's what your primitive brain can't comprehend. SO WHAT IF YOU CAN LEARN TO DRIVE A BIG TRUCK WHEN YOU CAN JUST BUY A TOYOTA, FORD OR VOLKSWAGEN??? DUH! I read your procedure twit. Pay attention. Wow!!! No way you are really this dumb! I mean no way! However, I looked at the procedure you have described and surprisingly, it is BASICALLY correct. The problem however, is that YOU STILL DON'T GET IT!
1. The procedure you described is practically the SAME as mostly everyone out there already uses (with or without minor differences)! This whole time you've been patting yourself on the back like a fool, all you've done is repeat what EVERYBODY ELSE has already known and been doing all along. DUH. Nobody has been doing it incorrectly as you've disingenuously and ignorantly have claimed thus far. This leads us into my next point... 2. WHAT YOU STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND IS THAT EVEN WITH THE PROCEDURE YOU DESCRIBED ABOVE A. IT'S STILL NO WHERE AS EASY AS FIELD STRIPPING A BROWNING, GLOCK OR EVEN 1911s! B. The old non mechanically inclined retired nurse with weak hands and carpal tunnel syndrome is STILL going to have a really hard time dealing with the R-51 field strip. Just because YOU can hold the barrel (even if only for a moment) while pulling the slide off, doesn't mean that's practical for some guy suffering from severe RA and sweaty hands. This is a simple concept that's easily eluded you in perpetuity, and doesn't bode well for your cognitive ability in general. Most normal people have the thinking capacity to understand why cars all have automatic starters now. No one is going to buy a car that has to be hand cranked to get started whether they know how to do it or not. The same goes for pistols. Why would grandma go out and buy an R-51 and go through all the trouble to "train" and learn to field strip it, when she can just buy an S&W air weight revolver which doesn't need stripping at all, or at least a Mossberg MC1 which is EASILY field stripped in a fraction of the time as an R-51?!?!?! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND MARKETING OR BASIC COMMON (BUSINESS) SENSE AT ALL. HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED TO THINK THAT MAYBE THERE IS A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MARKETING FAILURE OF THE R-51 AND REMINGTON'S BANKRUPTCY??? OF COURSE NOT! Unfortunately, EVERYONE else in the world has connected those dots BUT YOU. Back to your procedure: Look at your number 7- (Install Pin). While you foolishly embarrass yourself by bragging how much you know and how no one else has it right, you failed to include that when the pin is reinstalled it must be done so carefully so that its tab fits in UNDER the clip inside the frame or the pistol won't operate correctly. Now, virtually EVERYONE ELSE IS WISE ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS POINT...THAT SAME EVERYONE you ignorantly accuse of "doing it wrong"...those very same "UA-cam experts" you foolishly ridicule repeatedly (You do know Remington is one of those UA-cam experts right?)...they're all knowledgeable enough to mention avoiding this common mistake,...ALL BUT YOU! LMAO. Not only is the basic procedure you touted as the "right way" old news that everyone has already been using, YOU CAN'T EVEN GET THAT TOTALLY RIGHT. The only thing that you added that was "new" (ummm, that's old news now) is that you don't hold the barrel with recoil spring compressed when reinserting the slide,...but you fail to mention to make sure the ejector is NOT rotated up first before you begin so it can't jam and/or nick the back of the slide when you push it back. Again, what you described is still three times more involved than stripping an S&W EZ or Glock-and that's not even considering people with physical limitations. Those people are all just going to avoid the trouble from the start and buy Glocks or Mossbergs. In the meantime Remington goes bankrupt, and the wincingly ignorant Paul Curry may possibly end up with a pistol that's not even supported by its original manufacturer when all is said and done. As for me, as I've told you before I can probably field strip an R-51 faster than you,...but, as I already asked you,...WHY DON'T YOU JUST CARRY AROUND A FLINTLOCK SINCE YOU CAN "LEARN HOW TO USE IT CORRECTLY" just like you implore others to do with the R-51? You've been avoiding that question like the plague. I wonder why? ;) So pal,...how does it feel to be made a fool of by a 10 year old in between pulls of the pigtail? Nice try,...but no cigar.
@Paul Curry In other words you can't think of anything to say now that you've had all of your simple minded nonsense shot down in flames (once again). And it sounds like you have a thing AGAINST old ladies. Afraid they might have a practical gun when you try to mug them? You sound like one of those communists that only likes guns when no one else can own them but himself. If I really am "ignorant" as you claim, I'll enjoy it-thank you very much. But, I'll take ignorance over stupidity any day of the week...Because as you've repeatedly proven, IGNORANCE CAN BE CURED, BUT STUPID IS FOREVER. Have fun selling fur punch bowls door to door...
The takeaway here is why try to reinvent the circle? There are so many other designs that are proven. I would think this pistol was designed by engineers not familiar with firearms. That said, I think it's a cool gun, kind of like in a Grand Power way which I own.
It's an old design,...not a reinvention. It was so successful back in the '20s that it's been recorded Remington was paid a big fee to stop production to end its competition with another gun maker. This design is proven. General Patton fired one and then ordered one for himself immediately. It then became one of his preferred carry guns. The current version was botched partly due to the launch happening right when they were moving their production facility down south. Questionable management contributed to the 2014 recall. The gun is really good in general,...it just needed some refinements. People who know about guns should be able to "handle it."
Remington: Hey guys, you know how well our Remington 870s and 700s sell so well because of their basic designs? Well, what if we take a swing at the modern single stack carry gun market, but as a practical joke, we design it so you need four hands and a degree in mechanical design to disassemble it?
I have to say, I was excited back in 2013 or 2014, whenever it came out. But I'm just turned off by the way everyone has talked about theirs. Also, I have to say it seemed like a real bear to eat it disassembled and reassembled. Hats off to you lol
The only thing cool about this pistol is it’s looks, performance is about as bad as it gets. Remington had a chance to make a big splash with this gun and flopped in the worse way. Besides all the bad internet reviews, a conductor I work with has one that has been back to Remington once already and still fails.
There are some subtle tricks to make the cleaning easier. It will always be worse than a Glock in terms of take down and reassembly though. I guess that's the tradeoff you get for the improved shootability.
Love shooting and extremely accurate however I am just beginning to forget the failures now after 500 rounds It’s likes hot ammo for sure The take down is simply a bitch compared to alternatives. It’s a love hate thing but hard to trust
@@LiChoiFungfan We've had a couple of generations of people spoiled by those polymer framed "plastic fantastics", to the point that disassembly of old school, all-metal autoloaders is considered "too complicated" or "too hard". It takes a couple of times to get used to doing it. Then it's nothing to take apart and reassemble during cleaning/lubrication sessions.
Well, if it's too difficult to strip down and it's not that accurate anyway, then there shouldn't be any problem putting it in the dishwasher, then spraying half a can of Ballistol on it afterwards. Problem solved. -
WTF? That disassembly, reassembly is ridiculous. I have the RP9, I am a Remington fan and wanted to like the one you are reviewing but there is no way I would take that much time to take it apart and put it back together. No way!!
@Paul Curry Don't you already know by now Johnny come lately? That's what you claim. You are responding a year or two later. What's new to you others have long ago figured out on their own. Duh.
I'm no expert with this gun, just showed what was described in the manual. This was BEFORE Remington admitted the manual was wrong and BEFORE they did a video on how to do it simply. Congrats on expertise in a forgotten weapon. Someday that'll be a cool parlor trick.
@Paul Curry No,...not bad,...if what you said was even believable. What you don't get is that the typical person with a good job, and busy life doesn't have 5 hours a day for 5 months to learn how to field strip and shoot an R-51 like a Marine Marksman. Even if your obvious exaggerations were true, just because you have that kind of spare time waiting for your unemployment check, or in between shifts at the local 7/11 it doesn't mean the typical person with a meaningful life does. That's why other people run gun companies and you don't. Even the little kid running a lemonade stand on the side of the road understands that you don't put all your business resources and marketing into selling a mass produced product to just one delusional twit eager to impress the world he can field strip a gun while eating a ham sandwich upside down in a hurricane. Most people are just smart enough to go and buy a Sig P365, Shield, Hellcat or Glock 26, spend just 10 minutes learning its field strip and then go do something else.
I am so glad I didn't buy this when it was first released. I almost did. That's why I don't have a Hudson M9 yet. I love the look of that pistol, but what a terrible design. If they remake it with a regular Browning action then I might be interested.
Design has been proven for almost 100 years,...it's just the company management and current manufacturing methods weren't implemented right at first. Now they are good guns. The recalled guns were the screwed up ones.
@Paul Curry How do you even know ibsrpage is even talking about the field strip? A lot of people didn't like the reliability problems many of these guns experienced-especially the SC makes. For once get the facts before you embarrass yourself.
@Paul Curry And when have I ever busted your balls over a typing mistake (especially considering the amount of such mistakes you actually make)? Try NEVER. I have only busted your balls on things like ignorance and lying,...why assume when you can just flat out lie,...speaking of which, you have managed to lie yet again here. A word of advice: Don't miss church this Sunday...
@Paul Curry I just did you twit! Now you're lying about lying. You are a sociopath. Obviously you've never "wasted" time in any church. They tell people not to lie. You must be off your meds...
when Ian from Forgotten Weapons is an old man he'll be showing this thing and cussing that he dont have the hand strength to take it down and trying to smash it on the table to hold the slide back.
Ha! Forgotten Weapons of the Future, today at Remington! That's funny. I guess nobody ever sets OUT to make something that will later be an obscure relic.
How can you possibly say that the gun is “a good design“ when you have to do the disassembly and assembly as you have shown which can be very problematic and difficult. Also the trigger is plastic and has a lot of play from side to side and is a piece of junk. Couple that with the problems that Remington is having, and you have a gun that’s not worth purchasing or shooting or carrying
So what if there is some lateral play in the trigger? It's not for competition shooting in the Olympics. It shoots better than probably all its competition, and is probably the lowest priced. If you can get past the horrible (dis)assembly, you're alright.
Like Anything else.....where there is a will there is a way....is it a little complicated? Certainly....are their simpler guns? Certainly.....is it impossible to do....no way....most people will have it down pact on their second cleanning.....just too many critics out there.
So much promise, great features like melted lines, grip safety, & swappable grip panels. A real metal frame gun for those that appreciate it. But what a sad joke. Initial batches were probably all lemons, and this ridiculous takedown and reassembly.
Remington. Designs a pistol that is supposed to be easy to rack for people with lower hand strength. Also designs it so those people can’t disassemble it. *facepalm*
Actually, it's their (dis)assembly instructions that are what makes it worse than it has to be. There are ways to do it that make it a bit easier. Also, there are workarounds for those who can't do it at all.
Wow. It was painful to watch you field strip that thing. There were people at Remington that actually thought that this was not an issue from a marketing standpoint? Sad.
@Paul Curry Still running around telling people the red coats are coming centuries after the Revolutionary war eh? Did they patent your "invention" of the wheel yet?
People under 60 should have more hand strength than this. It's like the reviewer who had to use two fingers to pull the double action trigger on a p64.
Saw a lot of bad reviews on this gun. Purchased it (due to some of the positive reviews) and have not had a single misfire or failure to feed. Its been a great gun and I really like it. It is tough to field strip; but I knew that going in. Thanks for the video.
Whaaaa, I have never seen these Guns cycle more than 3 rounds before it jam's this gun sucks.
My experience it will only function 6 rounds per mag and only after at least 500 rounds of “break in “
The original mags were shit caused all the jams. They recalled the mags and made ones that work now
DONALD cooper you should withhold judgement until you try it for yourself. Mine works fine as well.
Mine works mine works good too I have about 8 or 900 round through it.
I have had mine for a year and love it, only dislike in the 7 round mag so I have 6 of them. I have never had a failure of any type.
I’ve had the same experience as you. I think most people that say they have a problem with theirs don’t really own one.
I'm amazed at the number of videos reviewing this gun that show the absolute most difficult way you could possibly think of to field strip it. Remington has a terrific video right here on UA-cam that shows the proper technique to field strip and reassemble the firearm.
Yep, here too ... www.remington.com/handguns/remington-r51
@Paul Curry I'm super interested in one of these. You can find em right now online for $210 or $310 with Crimson Trace laserguard.
Makes a Taurus GS2 look good
R51 was probably the final nail in Remington coffin, but the model 700 Rifle put most of them in it.
Looks like a very satisfying trigger. I dont know the feel but it reminds me of a bersa bp9cc trigger. It has a surprisingly nice trigger.
I really wanted this gun to be a success. Its actually a real cool idea. What a shame they didnt work out.
Makes the Ruger MKs look like a dream
When dissembling it’s easy enough to just put the collar in the slot tilted up while you already have it pulled back at the beginning. It’s now where near as hard as it looks here after a couple of field strips.
I think the person who would enjoy this likes to tinker and has lots of patience. Now a days I don’t thinks most folks would enjoy it as compared to the more modern stuff. I’d be more interested in getting the original. Thanks for all the work & posting 👍🏼
Same design as the original basically. It shoots better than most of it's competition though and that's the draw.
UNICORN MORON.

these guns will be selling for $1,000 in 10 years
Why do you feel that will be the case?
@@PropGuru702 guns that don't sell well, over complicated. get discontinued , then everyone wants one then.
@@johnwayne2012 glad I got mine with crimson Trace for a bargain then. I personally love mine. No issues
This looks cool.
after a few cleanings. It does get easier to take down
I don't even think about it anymore..I don't understand why its so hard for people to take down ?
Just keep doing what you're doing. You have a fan here brother.
I'd give you a cookie but I'm fresh out.
Dream Gun 4 me ! 4 lotsa reason's TY 4 urv review
You actually don't need the spring clip but, that is one good workaround.
@Paul Curry You are too stupid for me to explain it to.
Matthew Caughey thank you for the info, I will be getting one. I found one for $249 online. That's a good price to me.
They are getting really cheap. You can find for under $300 now. They had a rebate last year too. The new ones seem to be good,...may need a break in period but, they shoot very well. This video doesn't really show how bad the field strip/cleaning process really is though.
@Paul Curry You're still a blithering idiot I see...
since your checking out Remington products any plans on the Rm380?
If I can get one on loan
Thanks for good video. Found a used R51 in my neck of the woods for $200. Before I commit to it I would like to figure out if it was the first Generation run that they had problems with 2014-2016. Or if this specific gun was the second run after the recall and problems fixed. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to sort it out? (Serial number. Manufacturer stamp. Different parts. I heard the newer ones have set screws for sights that the bad first run did not????!) any help is appreciated. As you say I want a re re release! Lol. Ned In NYS
Gen 2 has the R51 stencil right behind the ejection port.....easiest way to differentiate.....
You said it best about the RP9- the Remington engineers don't know much about handgunning . . . or something to that effect.

This ain't "Grand Power hard" (to take down), just because you're on camera. This little gun really is genuinely difficult-- more than it should be.
Nice try, Remington. "A" for effort and "Deco-Ray Punk" aesthetics. "D" for execution. Sorry...
Красивый дизайн,чем то напоминает старые вальтеры...Но механика и компановка удручает конечно.

What he said!
"Pedersen hesitation lock"
No more Dawn Patrol?
I did up a batch of other intros. Dawn Patrol is still in there, as are some other great songs from Megadeth.
Graham Baates Hanger 18 intro would be nice.
I like the way you think.
Far, far too complicated!
I've got plenty of nerve damage in my hands. So can likely never get that damn thing apart. But it does "Look pretty Cool!"
SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING DIFFERENTLY, AND HOW CAN YOU IMPLY THE METHOD IN THE MANUAL IS NOT THE "CORRECT WAY?"
Maybe you had medical trratment but, your situation is still different from others.
Don't you know how to use them "the easy way?"
Unless you are awarding grandma a million bucks for learning the R-51 fields strip, she's not going to care and is just going to get the S&W J frame.
I wonder why? ;)
So pal,...how does it feel to be made a fool of by a 10 year old in between pulls of the pigtail?
That said, I think it's a cool gun, kind of like in a Grand Power way which I own.
from what I hear the Grand Powers work.....the r51 even the new ones not so much
It's an old design,...not a reinvention.
@Paul Curry No,...not me,...I don't need a critical thinking class like you. You get a patent for "your" wheel "invention" yet?
Remington: Hey guys, you know how well our Remington 870s and 700s sell so well because of their basic designs? Well, what if we take a swing at the modern single stack carry gun market, but as a practical joke, we design it so you need four hands and a degree in mechanical design to disassemble it?
acurakid21
That was my thinking too!
@Paul Curry Think? You've already shown you're not exactly good at that junior.
I have to say, I was excited back in 2013 or 2014, whenever it came out. But I'm just turned off by the way everyone has talked about theirs. Also, I have to say it seemed like a real bear to eat it disassembled and reassembled. Hats off to you lol
I think the army should cancel its contract with Sig. This abomination is way more versatile and user-friendly.
I hate that this gun has sketch reliability cause I like this guns style alot.
Most of the reliability problems were from the recalled guns. The current ones are reliable.
@Paul Curry STILL not only a LIAR, but STUPID LIAR...
The only thing cool about this pistol is it’s looks, performance is about as bad as it gets. Remington had a chance to make a big splash with this gun and flopped in the worse way. Besides all the bad internet reviews, a conductor I work with has one that has been back to Remington once already and still fails.
Most of the updated guns from 2016 forward seem to be working well from what I've heard.
I think I’ll be able to solve the rubiks cube before I can fluently take the R51 down lol
PROTECTIVE RAILROAD DAD - LOL
There are some subtle tricks to make the cleaning easier. It will always be worse than a Glock in terms of take down and reassembly though. I guess that's the tradeoff you get for the improved shootability.
Once you take it down a few times it becomes easy as any other.
-
It's accurate.
@Paul Curry Did you see the many that said it's not as easy to strip as other guns?
WTF? That disassembly, reassembly is ridiculous. I have the RP9, I am a Remington fan and wanted to like the one you are reviewing but there is no way I would take that much time to take it apart and put it back together. No way!!
It comes with such a sense of accomplishment...and sore fingers...and lost time...
The Remington instructions are what's bad. There are ways to do it that are a bit easier.
Most people are just smart enough to go and buy a Sig P365, Shield, Hellcat or Glock 26, spend just 10 minutes learning its field strip and then go do something else.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg Who is Rube Goldberg ?
@Paul Curry I meant the NC makes.
@Paul Curry
I just did you twit! Now you're lying about lying. You are a sociopath. Obviously you've never "wasted" time in any church. They tell people not to lie. You must be off your meds...
Field strip as I observe is difficult.
I think these look really cool. But i dont trust them so much and the take downs wierd. If i find one cheap id have it just for the fun of it thou
when Ian from Forgotten Weapons is an old man he'll be showing this thing and cussing that he dont have the hand strength to take it down and trying to smash it on the table to hold the slide back.
Ha! Forgotten Weapons of the Future, today at Remington! That's funny. I guess nobody ever sets OUT to make something that will later be an obscure relic.
holy crap, field strips like a space gun. Good luck doing it in 0 G lol
How can you possibly say that the gun is “a good design“ when you have to do the disassembly and assembly as you have shown which can be very problematic and difficult. Also the trigger is plastic and has a lot of play from side to side and is a piece of junk. Couple that with the problems that Remington is having, and you have a gun that’s not worth purchasing or shooting or
carrying
So what if there is some lateral play in the trigger? It's not for competition shooting in the Olympics. It shoots better than probably all its competition, and is probably the lowest priced. If you can get past the horrible (dis)assembly, you're alright.
Like Anything else.....where there is a will there is a way....is it a little complicated? Certainly....are their simpler guns? Certainly.....is it impossible to do....no way....most people will have it down pact on their second cleanning.....just too many critics out there.
@Paul Curry LIAR.
@Paul Curry No need to get past something you are already behind moron.
Everyone please watch Remington’s Field strip video on here. No disrespect intended but the assembly is rough to watch here, lol.
So much promise, great features like melted lines, grip safety, & swappable grip panels. A real metal frame gun for those that appreciate it. But what a sad joke. Initial batches were probably all lemons, and this ridiculous takedown and reassembly.
The field strip procedure is bad but, that's the only big problem in general. It shoots as well as they claim and is very cool in many ways.
Don't believe this idiot Paul Curry. He claims he can field strip an R-51 about as fast as a Glock.
What a shame - that a good looking pistol should be so messed up in function.
Just the take-down is difficult. The rest of the gun is cool.
This seems like the worst possible disassembly imaginable for a modern firearm.
Wow
@Paul Curry And there YOU go, pathologically lying again. There's a difference between the field strip instructions and the actual field strip twit.
@Paul Curry No way you are really this stupid. Go back and reread my post. Sound it out if you have to...
What a hassle just to get a gun disassembled!
Wow. It was painful to watch you field strip that thing. There were people at Remington that actually thought that this was not an issue from a marketing standpoint? Sad.
The approach to the official take down method is screwed. There are some workarounds that make it a little easier for people in the know.
@Paul Curry Still running around telling people the red coats are coming centuries after the Revolutionary war eh? Did they patent your "invention" of the wheel yet?
@Paul Curry Better than yours who are just out in the open. They are called ANTIFA.
This should be good....
In a train wreck kind of way..
How is it that all these guys with fat fingers struggle to take this gun down?
;)
People under 60 should have more hand strength than this. It's like the reviewer who had to use two fingers to pull the double action trigger on a p64.
No wonder with their poorly engineered pistols, that Remington is spiraling inexorably down the bankruptcy drain.
OMG
C'mon Remington, surely you can design something easier to takedown than this POS. No thanks, I'm not interested, as I'm spoiled by better designs.
Got to be a gunners mate, armorer or have a Ph.D to figure assembly out.
Beautiful pistol but aweful performance, own one and still regret it
What has your experience been?
Send it in to Remington for service.
@Paul Curry OK you are a complete fool? OK! LMAO!
Polished turd. Everyone agrees this is a lemon..move on.
Remington is entering bankruptcy restructuring. Wonder why???
Ugly gun with a horrible take down plus a track record of failures= Winner!
That was the 2014 POS. The current version is actually really cool.
@Paul Curry No,...I type. Okay,...let's try it again,...walk, and chew,...walk, and chew,...walk-dammit Curry, you screwed up again!
