Thank you Chef John. Your recipes are fantastic, but more importantly, you have given me the courage to try new things in the kitchen and now I really enjoy cooking dinner for my family. And my wife thinks it's funny when I imitate your inflection. That's how she knows it's a Chef John dinner.
Hi Chef, I'm from India and we don't get tube or can based tomato paste so easily here. All we get is tomato puree in tetra packs. What can be the substitute for the paste in our case or can we cook out tomatoes on a stove till they are dry and then add them to make up for the paste part?
Jonas Lundholm TRUTH! And even though he no doubt could go all Hollywood, I don’t think he ever would. Humble and honest, and that’s a no-no there, obviously.
Agreed. I literally make a recipe from FoodWishes at least once a week, if not more often. It's become such a go-to source for me that now, whenever I tell my family what they're eating is a new recipe, they ask, "FoodWishes?" :) Thanks, Chef John, for all the full tummies!
I had this soup as a first course at a Turkish restaurant recently and it's just unbelievably good. So hearty and satisfying, it almost made me wanna cancel my entree and order another bowl or two of soup instead!
J Dizzle, yes, lentil soup is the most popular and most beloved soup in Turkey! We drink this soup literally in every season and at any time of the day, even for breakfast, lol :)
Love this. Instead of the yogurt at the end, I added the lemon juice and lemon zest directly to the soup. Also added sunflower seeds when serving and a little nutmeg on top. Very easy and quick to make. This is going in my weekly rotation.
How interesting! i'm from Syria (the middle-east) and we have similar dishes to this. We do have lentils soup, yogurt soup and tomato soups... but I never seen all of them in one dish. which isnt a bad thing. I might try it, something new after all. The only thing is, we definitely use mint but never fresh mint in soups, only dried. which gives a totally different flavor. anyways, nice video! interesting new ideas.
I've been making dal soups for 45 years, similar to this one. Red lentils are easiest to find in a mainstream market, along with brown and de Puy. But I've got chana, urad, masur, mung, toor. My original recipe came from "Lord Krishna's Cuisine," which is pretty definitive on vegetarian Indian cooking, very respectful of food and subtle, delicate flavors. I toss a few red bird peppers into mine. Chef is right, red lentils are very pretty. And they're so cheap, easy, and fast cooking. You should all try it!
Another amazing recipe, Chef! Thanks for being the great teacher that you are. I have been watching your videos for years now. And you were one of my two inspirations to get into the Food industry myself. I am now a trained chef myself! And someday I hope to meet you! I also make cooking videos and I sign off somewhat in your style! :) Thanks Chef! You're amazing.
In Egypt we make orange lentil soup but we just boil everything together then blend it smooth. I tried Browning the onions first with tomato sauce as chef John did and it added a very sweet and delicious undertone. I added tomatoes too and a little bit of paprika and it was absolutely wonderful! Thank u chef
You have every reason to be excited. This is the best soup I've ever made/eaten (and I've made lots of great soups). I discovered your recipe four days ago and have made it twice since then. Such a delicious blend of flavours and balance of heat and sweet that I can't imagine anyone with taste buds not loving it. It's a meal in itself and as easy and enjoyable to prepare as it is to eat; the colours and aromas as it cooks are intoxicating. Thanks for posting another great recipe. As a former restaurateur/chef, I love your approach to cooking.
Just got a bag of red lentils that I used to make Turkish lentil soup. Guess I know what I'm doing next. Thanks for uploading the best videos on UA-cam Chef John!
Yours is one of the best cooking channels on youtube, with real, original and creative recipes. Not that recycled and ridiculous recipes from channels like Tasty.
This dish is delicious! I doubled the recipe and it still didn’t survive very long- even considering a lot of us served it over rice or quinoa. 😋 Those who tried it with the minty-lemony yogurt were quite surprised at how well it paired together. I’ve been asked to add this meal to the regular rotation of go-to meals. Thank you Chef- from the whole family, Blessings ~ * I used plant based butter and vegetable broth. For those interested, Country Crock has some great plant based butters available now- in stick form. I love using Miyoko’s butter, but I only buy it when it’s on sale- which is not often, or I’m just not catching it on the sale dates. I only use it when I’m trying to perfect my Mac & Cheese recipe- - I know, it’s a hopeless battle😢
I love all types of soups! Especially this time of year. I just threw together split pea and ham soup in my good ol' crock pot, sooo I'll definitely make this next week.
I just made this and onto the yogurt dressing I also added the juice and the zest of a lime... This is BY FAR the most delicious soup I have ever tasted or made. I never knew lentil can be so yummy and the ingredients used in this soup are a no brainer, super cheap and basic but full of flavour, nutritious, delicious and comforting. I only made a small pot just in case I didn't like it, enough for 2-3 bowls... Guess who's making more tomorrow? :) ... Thanks Chef John, you're awesome!!! Edit: I just re-made this soup in a huge pot, my husband that is not into soups, absolutely loves this soup, so that tells a lot! Yummy and easy to make goodness! :)
This is my favorite Turkish recipe. I use diced onion and carrot in the first step, and skip the celery. I fully blend it before serving for a gorgeous warm orange color. We serve with a dash of dried crushed mint on top with a squeeze of lemon and drizzle of chili oil, instead of yogurt. Easy, fast, and always a show-stopper. I also recommend using pul biber (turkish aleppo pepper) in place of cayenne here. It gives it a deeper flavor you don't want to miss.
Hi Chef John. Followed your instructions to the letter and served to my Turkish friends visiting from Istanbul. They Loved it..and asked me for the recipe! So Thank You 👍🤗🇹🇷
I make a chicken and lentil stew and have used all of the above discussed lentils before. I truly think the red lentils are the best and not just because of the color. The others seem to impart a 'grittiness' to my stew that the red ones don't. I'll have to try this recipe because it not only looks good but also very simple! Thx Chef John for another great one to try! ☺
Chef John...I am day 4 into an extended fast and was making your lentil soup here to break my fast with later tonight. You took so many spoonfuls at the end of the video I almost feel like I ate it with you. After all, I am the Creature from the Black Lagoon of my Lentil Lagoon. Bon Appetito!
Didn't follow the recipe exactly since I have dairy allergies but WOW who's is such a great take on Dhal soup. It's amazing how much timing and carmelizing can make a huge difference.
I just made this soup with vegetable broth and it is still good!! The lemon mint yogurt must be tried! This is my fifth of Chef John’s soup recipes. First one was cream of asparagus and it was good! Second one was cauliflower soup and it was good! Third one was Spanish garlic soup and it WAS bad. Fourth one was butternut squash soup and it was good!!
Aussie bloke here, subscriber for many years, this is my 1st post. Made this yesterday, which was Valentines day, and lets just say it was a great success. I love your style of delivering the recipes, you make me smile. Thanks
I love that the freakishly small wooden spoon came back, and I also appreciate his little brothers, what it seems to be a freakishly small mortar and pestle. Loved this recipe, thank you Chef :)
Oh hey, we eat this almost every day in India! I am from West Bengal and this red lentil soup, or as we call it 'musoor dal' is everyday simple food. We generally eat it with white rice and some simple mashed potato (boiled potato mashed with oil, salt, fried onion, and chili). Very popular in Bangladesh and Nepal too.
Awesome 👍. Also just a tip from a population that consumes red lentils all year round: you can soak the lentils an hour in advance for higher nutrition or you can roast it ahead lightly for a deeper flavour. And coriander/ cilantro topping 😎
We call this as sambar in southern part of India. mix with rice.. yummy yummy.. sambar rice is our lunch menu. Use pressure cooker and 3-5 whistle, mix onion, tomato and any vegetables.
That's awesome! I make one that is quite similar to this, although I use a can of crushed tomatoes instead of paste, toss in an anchovy during the saute phase (adds a lot of umami) and throw in chunks of ham. I might have to get some red lentils and try that mint yogurt as well.
Thank you for your entertainment but mainly, your great recipes. Even if i don't always follow them to the letter, i always learn new techniques along the way.

As a person who has seen each Food Wishes video ever made, I can tell you that the ol' sighting of the khakis is actually a frequent sight on this channel, particularly this time of year when his kitchen is cold.
Got some simmering right now to try! Threw in a little shredded cabbage that was left in the fridge, and I think I darkened my paste too much, but it smells amazing so far! Cant wait!♡
So this year I decided to cook a good "luxurious" dinner for my best friend as a birthday present, and I just could figure out what the main course should be, but now I know! Can`t wait to try it out!
I loved that having watched the video, that this would be an amazing recipe. YES, it is!!! Simple recipe and minimal ingredients. Huge flavor for so little effort!!! Thank you! xo
I'm so thrilled to see foods that I can eat! I have a strict low inflammatory diet. I will sub the yogurt for coconut milk and I think it will be delicious!
Chef John this is such a wonderfully easy soup to make. I took a few liberties on the seasoning, sometimes you have to work with what you have - and I'd say go a step further and don't even bother prepping your vegetables ahead of time and just let that tomato base really caramelize with those onions (and chicken in my case), and just slow roll them when you do start. That tomato paste just develops into this amazingly rich flavor bomb that makes a foundation to build everything else on top of. Also, I've been looking for a good excuse to use some of the 20lbs of lentils that have been needlessly accumulating in my pantry for the last 5 years, so it's a win-win.
This was VERY good. Mine was not nearly so pretty but tasted good. I also added some parmesan and EVOO for serving AND lemon mint yogurt. However, one thing I did do differently--America's Test kitchen suggested whisking, not immersion blender. This was way easier because mine is a pain to use. Not easy whisking this either but did for a minute and it works perfectly. However, used Chef John's recipe which looked better to me. Thanks for the video.
This looks absolutely delicious! We've had some pretty bad weather around these parts recently, so a comforting soup like that would probably work wonders for the soul on the cold wet evenings. Thanks for sharing the recipe, I've learned a lot from watching your channel!
I've been an omnivore my whole life but have been shifting towards a more and more vegan diet so having yet another lentil recipe is more the welcome. Thank you chef John!
Chef John, this was really good. Easy put together and healthy for my hubby (who recently had a coronary event) after working 2nd shift. Made it and commented on AR. (it didn't need a full 30 minutes simmer) Tasted, seasoned and sitting on stovetop right now. Yogurt topping ready. Hope your house is coming along nicely. (sorry I can't afford to be a member, but appreciate your plan).
In Greece, with usual brown lentils, we reach boil in plain water and always throw it out and drain them, a little extra step that helps colour and taste.
I made this recipe last night, like an hour after you posted it. Excellent! I only had Beluga or Indianhead lentils (although I was absolutely certain that there had to be some red ones in the cupboard.) but went at it anyway. Yes, the color is not the strong point of that dish then, but it tastes amazing.
As good as one Turkish restaurant I've been to many times. And much better than an expensive one I went to recently. I usually only make a couple of tweaks to Chef John's recipes.
One tip, add a little water steadily and evaporate it, to cook the onions. That way you get the best flavour, without risking the dark fond (can get bitter).

Quite witty!
Thumbs up for that pun.. And I see you made Chef John proud.

One tip, add a little water steadily and evaporate it, to cook the onions. That way you get the best flavour, without risking the dark fond (can get bitter).
Thank you🙂🌸
Nice and easy. I'll make today. Thanks chef
What so good about this it can also be used on top of cooked white rice (or any rice) the combo taste is amazing especially during the cold winter :)
