- On this video I will show you the correct method to hook up your radio so that you can operate it using Zello enabling you to access your radio or your local repeater where ever you are in the world.
If you have tried this before using a UV5R you will have run in to problems, I will show you a neat solution around this enabling you to use an inexpensive radio in this configuration.
Please check and ensure that it is legal to setup and operate your radio in this fashion in your country of operation first, this video is for educational purposes only.

I notice it vut off the beginning of your sentence as the VOX on the radio took 1/2 a second to come on. If you set Zello on the laptop to play a quick beep just before it receives a transmission that opens VOX on the radio and you're less like to lose some of your sentence.
Yes I kind of wait but that's a good tip as not everyone realises 👍
Awesome for sharing this. Now I can easily get on my local net when I'm out of town.
It's a great way of instantly testing your radios and base antenna coverage without having to have someone else at the other end or having to rely on a recording.
Yes I've used it for that 😎
Also, a great way to fry your radio. It's happened to many people when the vox settings were wrong and the talk stayed on
@@David-bg3ct Just about every radio has a time out timer option on TX
I made a special zello cable with a cheap earpiece. I followed that pin out diagram and ran the out put to one 3.5mm plug and the input to another 3.5mm making sure that only the right pins go to the right plug. Your solution is great because people can solve the problem even if they don't know how to solder. 👍
Thank you I tried to set up a few yrs back but had that ground problem thank you for the solution.
You are most welcome, thanks for watching.
It's perfect for scanner monitoring remotely nicely done chap‼️‼️‼️‼️
Yes but you only need to send out the signal to the Zello App. I know many here who fried radios when the Vox overheated
the ground loop isolation was the solution i was looking for in another application.
I tried this in the past and had the same issue with the TX trigger on the radio side - nice use of the isolator.
I feed audio from sdr# via virtual cable into zello set to vox to monitor fire brigade while out and about - no distance limits!
i know this is very late, but thank you for making this video!! i have been pulling my hair out trying to solve why my baofeng keys up when i connect to pc. i thought the baofeng was somehow defective and seriously considering buying another one. your explanation shines a light on my problem !!
No worries
Great video.
Thanks.
I will be doin this as soon as i can line up all the little connections to make it work .
Thank you and I need to learn more on zello.
I used Zello years ago when it first started and it was genuinely great; there was lots of chatter on plenty of public groups. Then they removed the ability to wild search for any group of interest, all the good users left and the remaining diehards went to private groups. The app was effectively useless. I'm amazed it is still going, but somehow it limps on with a handful of users.
Where do you down load this older version or Zello? The new one won't work with this unless I have a business account
Very nice video thank you!
hi knoxieman, can you give me the exact diagram of the connection of the ground isolator, where it will be pluged. etc. i badly need it, thanks knoxieman, i hope you will respond, i really need a guide on how i will interconnect the connectors, thanks
That was Awesome 👌 👏 😎 🙌 😀 😄 I have a question can you make a video for people who have a MAC that only has a audio out port? Please that would be so awesome there are a lot of us that would love to learn how to do this that way on a MAC. Cheers Mate 🍻 🥂 🍻 🥂
Thanks for the comments sadly I don't have a Mac or access to one, it could be done on a Mac but you would need to use an audio interface, external USB sound device.
@@knoxieman Thanks Mate i will definitely look into what to buy to do it because i think its just so awesome your one sharp man i hope i can figure it out. you made it look so easy, LOL I look forward to your next video. Thanks Again Mate Cheers.
Zello only has a Windows PC client, so running it on a mac could be quite tricky. I've had success running it on Linux in WINE, so you may be able to do that on a mac. But if you're wanting to run other sofware and hook it up to a radio, like APRS for example, there are mac clients.
@@RobinPringle It just so happens that I was looking into APRS I'm not to familiar with it. I actually just learned about it by browsing UA-cam for a way to hook up Zello to my Mac but no success with that. Then I saw the APRS videos 📹 and I have a Android phone 📱 I could run the APRS application on it.
Question is APRS a way to send text messages over the radio waves? Also is it really 🤔 worth it in your opinion. Because I just want to be able to reach a repeater in my local area when I am very far away from it. Like maybe running Zello on a old phone and hooking it up to the input of the radio from the output of the phone. That leaves me with a problem for the output of the radio how would I do that? Do you know if there is something I can buy to get it to work like a small device that will allow me to run the output from the radio to the input of a device that will allow for a audio input into the phone? Or how exactly could I do this if I only have a phone Android and also a IPhone and a IPad? So I can run Zello on one phone and it would key up my radio that is hooked up to my other phone. Instead of using a computer? Any chance you have the answer I am hoping for? Man that would be awesome if you have the answer to making it work that way.
Thanks my friend for any help you can give me I'm very interested in making this happen.
@@aragamuffinmessagerofthelo2309with something like the APRS-K2 cable baofengtech.com/aprs-k2-trrs-cable you can connect an iPhone or Android to your handheld radio. There are APRS apps for both Android and iPhone. You can send messages on APRS, also SMS through SMS gateways, have a look at smsgte.org.
The APRS-K2 cable will work for the input and output between Zello on your phone and a radio too. You just need to enable vox on the radio and Zello. Doesn't work as well as on a PC though, you just need to mess around with the settings. Notifications etc. would need to be deactivated on the phone to avoid broadcasting them over RF
How would I hook this up to a HP laptop with a single headphone/microphone jack? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Hi Knoxieman!, cool video, thanks. A little question, the coil type device in your antenna, what is? thanks.
Thanks, it's a dummy load
@@knoxieman Thanks
It won't work on mine, can you help me about it? What's your settings in Zello?
and does there exist a 2 pin to 3.5mm connector with included ground loop? so you don't have to have separate bits?
Also dont forget most windows machines automatically add agc to the audio if left default That makes it almost impossible to turn down.. always check for agc clicked on if audio is too loud )
it is also possible to connect with just 3 cables ... leave the gnd of the baofeng's the mikeplug alone and only use the gnd from speakerpin. Works fine for me.Using a 3.5mm trrs jack you can easily connect your baofeng to a smartphone running zello app as well. Works for my old Samsung S9+ fine ... just tune mike and speaker amp in app to -20db and use hardware volume controls at about 70 %. Be aware that there are two standards (CTIA and OMTP) for trrs wiring and make sure you choose the right one :-) . Difference ist mike and GND on Sleeve or 2nd Ring or the other way.
Can I use this like a Police Scanner for zello? Because I’m a Volunteer Firefighter, and sometimes when I be at school, I don’t have my pager or radio on me, because it be in my car, until I get out of school. And do you know
Any frequency that I can broadcast on without getting in trouble or my own frequency?
Yes you can essentially link anything you receive over zello you just have to make sure when you go back out on the radio your licensed to transmit on that channel, in some countries re transmission of other people's transmission's isn't legal though so you would need to check that.
@@knoxieman Oh I find another way too. I use SDR it like a free police scanner on pc, that you can listen to NXDN, P25, DMR, and Provoice. So I I got my connection like that but a different way.
When I speak with my brother. He complains that I am too loud and there is a screeching sound too loud for his ears. Then a couple of times he heard like a two way radio on our call. Could my ex use this to tap my calls?
what was that adapter you used between the radio and the laptop?
Could this set up be used with the phone having a Bluetooth headset with finger PTT button?
I.e so the headset connects via BT to the phone/Zello and uses the radio to transmit/receive?
I’m having trouble with when I hit the vox lock button down it keys the hold down Microphone button down with it
where did you find the attenuator on your Baofeng?
thanks
If your talking about the transmit power it's in the menu txp
@@knoxieman the rf attenuator to lower the rf output at your antenna?
Can this little rig be used for well, with ECHOLINK? Because, It appears what you have done, is effectively done away with any sort of extra device that is required for the radio to PC connection. For example a Signalink, or RigBlaster, etc. connection. (I know those units do have more adjustment features. And have their own built-in sound card.) But If you added a (Affordable) USB Sound Card to your wiring rig. (Isolating any sounds & Noise from the PC) You have (in essence) just created a very affordable version of a basic SignaLink device. (Its a cheap and streamlined version, but if it works? Who cares?). Please let me know, if you have tried it!
I am wanting to put together a portable Echolink node, just like this. And I think the In-Line Isolation Transformer, is the final key to making this project work successfully! Thank you.)
Yes the audio transformer enables the use of any radio that keys like this and is useful to have inline in any audio setup where ground loops could cause noise.
@@knoxieman Great! I would think if you have an isolator on both lines, then you are totally protected from any ground loops (if needed?). And by adding volume control switchs, to each lines, you can adjust the volume (audio power) going in either direction. Line 1: Would not over power the PC audio input. Line 2: Would adjust PC output power to the radio's input (mic). Basically fine tuning the system...maybe?
I drew up plans, and estimated the total cost. Its about 1/3 the price a commercially made Signalink USB.
Yes it can't hurt at all running more than 1 isolation transformer, best of luck 😎👍
i have an issue with transmitting through the radio into the cello app. It only works one way. Hello can't (or won't)help me and the gateway manufacturer can't help me software wise.I am clearly doing something wrong, maybe you can help me? cheers!
So this is amazing! I did it, with the isolator, and it works great....until I try to place the radio in the charger to keep it powered. The radio goes into constant transmit, just like it did before the isolator. Outside of the charger, on only battery power, it works fine. Any hints or ideas on how to eliminate the constant transmit if we wanted to place the radio into the charger to keep it going longer? Thoughts? Ideas?
That's really strange, I must admit I've not tried that, is the audio device feeding in to the radio also grounded? It might be that, try plugging in your phone as the audio source.
I have the same situation, did you ever figure anything out? Works fine until I drop it in a charger. I have the 12 volt battery eliminator I’m going to try next to see if that helps, after that I’m out of ideas to try
@@scottmiller1776 I did., and I apologize for not posting sooner. For me it was turning the VOX level to 4 or 5 and that seemed to work. Very odd, but it works!
@@knoxieman thanks for getting back to me! I changed the VOX settings to 4 or 5 and it works!
@@scottmiller1776 also, some of the UV-5R chargers are, shall we say, not made the best? I have two and one of the chargers just doesn’t like to play well doing something similar as a simplex repeater. So there very well may be an issue with the wiring / power of the charger too. But play with the VOX settings first and see how that goes for you.
HI where have you buy your antenna?
where did you buy your dummy load for baofeng?
Amazon
How to transmit long audio time
Some option to put directly to cell phone, not in pc
Nice project 👍👏👏
Any idea if this would work on Echolink?......JOHN.....KC2FBH
Yep it works on el too
It might be easier to place a solar powerd repeater closer to the floor of the vally.
Благодаря ви.
You can't receive on zello using the hts with this setup. You can however transmit from zello to the hts. To receive on zello you need another mobile device with zello installed that acts as a duplexer.
If the radio is set up in duplex mode with the correct tones for the repeater, it should work.
@@JimNicholsMotorManiaGarage I actually was able to get this setup to work. I was having issues until I locked the transmit on the PC side of Zello and things functioned as they should. The ground loop is definitely needed for Baofeng radios in this application. I switched to a TYT MD-380 and could remove the loop. Good tutorial and useful for sure.
What antenna is that specifically?
Nice.............................
I’ve linked all these together, but noticed any received transmissions from Zello to radio is extremely distorted and hard to hear a single word what was said. Please give me an idea how to fix this
That sounds like the volume being fed to the radio from zello is too high to me.
You could also use this for some interesting PMR446 use.
Interesting to OFCOM too 🤣
What are those tones/beeps before the transmission at 5:58?
That little chirp is built into zello to let you know that the phone has made contact with the server and you are transmitting.
I did this setup but keep on hearing echo noises once I transmit.
Is there a way to connect to an android 3.5mm jack?
well, living in a rural region ,,i cannot find cables and adapter you are talking about,,,
i need a Zello node here ,,
anywaone can help me
thanks
gef ve2ckn
so this is perfectly legal in the UK (with a ham license)?
Yes
Is there a way we can eliminate the echo or delay. Whenever I press the ptt the echoe is every terrible 😔
What is the stacked disc device between the antenna & the Bofeng???
Slow reply but just reading the comments, that's a dummy load, it reduces the signal being put out to comply with licence usage conditions.
i have done this but when any radio users talk and it relays through zello the sound is like smurfs
Can i use windows 10?
You can use a old smartphone android with this app:

I want connect mine to echo link so I cuz it in sysop mode
CAN YOU PROVIDE A LINK TO A STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Umm....amazing stuff. Tyvm.
I wonder if you could use a vpn with this while using cheap walmart smartphones
Can you transmit from any portable radio and can you receive it from Zello?
If you can hook up your radio then yes 👍
@@knoxieman I tried it but it wont work
@@knoxieman Also when I transmit through Zello to Radio the audio is not clear
@@knoxieman In Zello sir, what is your settings? Cause until now it won't work.
No one is saying the channel of the radio it self
Is that a USS NOSTORMO!!!!!!! Hat
I`m gonna set that up for a network on zello on wich i can transmit off of my other radio so that i can use a real radio whilst rp ing as a cop
Brilliant
Year or two
use a baofeng aprs k1 cable
Link don't work
But if you and the people you talk to have Zello and internet on their phone, why us HAM radios? Because Zello can do the job on it's own as long as the internet is available, and you have unlimited range over the internet.
I live at the top of a valley at the bottom of the valley I get patchy cell coverage but I can still contact my property easily using my radio, in more remote locations there are probably others with the same problem so it's very useful being able to do this.
cool
