  • Here is a foolproof method to varnish your oil paintings. They will be ready for transport the next day and will be virtually odorless after drying. Note that Ken is applying the varnish in his garage and they will dry there overnight and without the fumes in your home or studio. There are more formal ways to do the final varnish to oil paintings, but since my oils are recently created, the are not ready for a final varnish, so I'm using retouch varnish here. The end result is a perfect, semi-gloss finish that is ready to hang in 24 hours.

    A very striking picture with a warm and positive atmosphere, like a Van Gogh style of the use of rich colour. And great no nonsenses video with some very useful tips.

    I am about to varnish my 1st painting which to be very large. This seems the easiest way to do it.

      It will go perfectly and will be completely dry the next day. Congratulations in advance!

    Hi Paul,
    You can paint right into the existing painting without a time lag. IF you applied a retouch varnish, wait a day or two - whenever it is dry to the touch. It you are painting over a final varnish, you should wait a few days before painting over that. Does that answer the question?

    When it is dry to the touch. Some colors take longer to dry than others. Of course the drier the better. You don't want to be pushing your paint around!

    How long to wait for applying Varnish to an oil painting when winsor and newton active drying medium used?

    • @elliottkce
      @elliottkce  6 років тому +1

      Just be sure it is completely dry to the touch, whatever the medium used and you should do just fine.

    how dry was the painting before you used this technique? thank you! xx

      Hi Holly. The work is dry but you can 'push' it a bit. Consider that the varnish is like a thinner and it will pick up a bit of paint from fairly dry works. So dry or just about dry will work.

    i tried w&n retouch varinish on my paintings and it was terrible ,,paintings still tacky month later and uneven streaks ever where ,,, my paintings have a black background will your method work on them ,,, ???😊

    • @elliottkce
      @elliottkce  7 років тому

      It should work just fine. Any imperfections in that black background will be brought out. Imagine trying to put a varnish onto a shiny black car. You're going to see a difference with a varnish over the black. This process should do very well for you.

    Hey friend, I thank you. Do you have tips about how to varnish oil pastel paintings? I have been going mad into forums and not many seem to have a clear idea about a really working solution! Thanks a lot, and your painting is wonderful. Wish you lots of sales! Well I wish that for me, too =)

    Hi Ken!
    Thank you so much for your video on varnishing an oil painting. Regarding Utreht and Windsor & Newton, we don't have either brand in our town of 80,000. Do you have a third brand that you like as well? If so, do I use the same technique as you had in the video, wiping with the Scott Rags? If there isn't another brand, I will order the product from a place in Utah. Thank you in advance! Carol

      +Cara Lot Any reputable brand with do just fine and the technique in the video will work with any of the liquid retouch varnishes. It's very simple - one less thing to worry about!

    Hey Ken. Great video. How long has this painting been dry for?

    • @elliottkce
      @elliottkce  8 років тому

      +Dean Sleiman certainly dry to the touch, since you are wiping it with a cloth. A bit of color may show on the cloth but it will not be noticeable on the oil.
