- Is the Rhodes V8 worth getting?
I made a mistake in this video when I referred to what the V8 is modeled. The MK8 is actually a new Rhodes as well, I assumed it was modeled after an older Rhodes and didn't register that the MK8 isn't an old Rhodes model.

This is the most authentic sounding Rhodes software by a good margin. The closest I’ve tried is hammers and waves electric and the upside is that you also get a fantastic sounding Wurli. The keyscape Rhodes libraries sound great, but to me they don’t sound like any Rhodes pianos I’ve ever heard. It’s also way more expensive, but you’re paying for the sheer variety of instruments they’ve sampled pretty well
Thanks for the comment and watching!
I shall demo it but am a bit sceptical that it's streets ahead of eg Scarbee ep 88 and Canterbury. Do you have those to compare it to?
Underrated UA-camr, very competent musician and good guy best of luck to you in future.
Thanks! I’m working on it haha
@@SamTheBeardGuy I just bought pianoteq it’s great
Hey man great video. I thought maybe I heard you mention this was modeled after an old classic model EP but actually the Rhodes mark 8 is a basically brand new 2022 modal Rhodes rather than a classic vintage one. It features onboard effects has a wider range of voicing options from previous models and is significantly lighter to accommodate gigging with it in a more practical sense compared to earlier models that often weighed upwards of 80lbs. This software combines sampling and physical modeling which is why it's a whopping 40 GB. Doctor Mix channel has a fantastic video on the whole manufacturing process and the remake and what's new with it. Pretty cool.
Great to know haha, I missed that detail, it looks just like the old one. Thanks for letting me know, to be honest I don't get super hung up on these types of details, it either sounds good or it doesn't haha.
@@SamTheBeardGuy yeah but if they're asking nearly ten thousand dollars for it it better sound good. Right? 🤣
you make every vst instrument sound good. amazing talent
thanks!!
Definitely gotta get the full pro version...I bought it the day it became available after beta testing it....has waaaaay more presets created by artists and some other cool features as well!!! Great playing!!!
Totally agree
I downloaded and demoed the V8 PRO version several weeks ago and decided not to buy it. There is so much I like about its programmability, and the samples are wonderful. But I could hear it in the first ten seconds of your playing at the top of this video-and you have a great touch on keyboard-but as with many sampled Rhodes libraries I’ve tried I think the velocity shift from the bell-tone to the bite-ier tone is too abrupt. I know Rhodes said there are a generous number of sampled velocities and that you can adjust the dynamic curve and volume response. But nothing I tried to tweak the change in tone to those lower velocities helped fill the gap in hearing a more constant transition that I recall from my years of playing a Seventy-Three Suitcase Mk2 where the transition from the quiet bell sound to the snappier bark was gradual and more responsive to touch. I spent hundreds of hours tweaking the touch of my Rhodes action to be able to play it with finesse. And now I use a quality MIDI keyboard and spend plenty of time fine tuning the velocity response on my other Rhodes sounds. But I just couldn’t get there with this one, and especially at a premium price. I’ll stick with Scarbee 88 and Orangetree E Model for now.
Yeah, that's my biggest complaint with most libraries, is the transition between timbre can feel unnatural.
Great video and playing (as usual)!! Thanks for the insight. 🙂👍✌
Thanks!
24:55 Now that is so beautiful . Love your improvisation man.
thanks!
I still think I like Keyscape more but who knows I could just be more used to it
Keyscape is great! A lot more expensive haha
@@SamTheBeardGuyrather buy that than a Nord
Awesome playing, man! Loved your demo/
thanks :)
Thanks for the video!
Beautiful.
Sounds like a real thing's demos.
Thanks for watching!
Nice, great playing. Next time i would put a noise gate on your vocal mic, because there's a lot of acoustic, mechanical noise coming offa your MID keyboard which makes judging the sound a little more difficult. The Fabfilter gate is great for that.
Hey! Yeah I do that on my new videos haha.
Great Playing TOO!!!
Thanks!
amazing playing, I just stopped by to listen to your craft and musicality:)
Keyscape is great. BUT, the V8 Pro can get that more mellow sound of the Rhodes perfectly.
Are you talking about presets? Because Keyscape is very tweakable (which often goes unmentioned) & in Omni 2 Keyscape can stretch in any direction.✌🏾
@@truthmanifestingtruth Try the demo. You’ll see what I mean.
theres some very nice playing here.
thanks :)
Lot's a customization possible with the Plug In. Get the Pro version which gives you the effects and detail control.
yeah it's great, thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing! after testing and testing, Keyscape is still one of the best for me
Thanks for watching!
Keyscape Rhodes is hard to beat.
yes it is haha
Sam The Beard Guy, You're Big Pianist!
thanks!
You should review the new Rhodecase88 by Virtuscape Audio!! Best one to me
Dumb question , but could you set up a midi controller with say rotatry nobs like a behringer x touch mini and control the individual nobs ?
What’s your go-to Rhodes?
I only have the Keyscape one. So that one I guess
Keyscape, NeoSoul Keys, Lounge Lizard
Addictive Keys 2 mk 1 because it came for free with a piece of gear i bought
Keyscape, NeoSoul Keys ,MKSENSATION Extreme, Korg Module Pro
I have four or five virtual Rhodes that sound and play great to me- Keyscape, Canterbury, Scarbee ep 88, Hammers & Waves, and maybe E-Instruments suitcase. Others I have that I would judge a bit below these- the modelled Pianoteq, Lounge Lizard and Arturia, Neo Soul Keys, the Waves version, V-Tines, Purgatory Creek, Sonic Couture deconstructed and several others.
I'm sure this new V8 is up with the best but can't really justify buying as it's pretty expensive and probably not way above those I already have.
Que toque magistral mí amigo... supremo
Modeling tends to have more dynamics . 27:18 sampled sounds better but is a drag to play
So you don’t like it?
@@SamTheBeardGuy Im downloading the demo.So I'll find out. It sounds good. Just wondering how it 'feels' under the fingers. So I'll get back . I trained on piano, so I get real frustrated with sample libraries and lack of depth (sample layers etc.). But then modeling sounds kinda fake. I never had that Rhodes but I did have the 73. I used to have a tech who would voice and tune it for me back in the 70s depending whether I was trying to sound like Joe or Herbie or Chick. It was heck of alotta work for sure.
@@SamTheBeardGuy I got the demo.. it’s super dynamic.. however as the guy below said the plug in is modeled after the 2022 new Rhodes which is nice but I grew up playing a 70s model… having said that it’s fun to play . I wish they would model the older versions as well.. seems they’ve done a fine job. Maybe I can find the real V8 in a shop to A/B. I’d rate Logics Rhodes a 3/10 and some sampled libraries a 4&5 and this one so far about a 6&1/2… more testing to be done. Thanks for all the piano reviews,
@@JohnFraserFindlay You nailed it! I downloaded the V8 and wanted to love it. It is extremely nice to play and the effects are awesome. The setup options are pretty vast compared to a real Rhodes (without needing a technician) and overall it's a great value! I just like the sound of older Rhodes models better. If they add other older models to their arsenal, then it would be the last Rhodes emulator you need. Thanks for the great video SamTheBeardGuy!
@@vstpluginsonicxtc I would put the V8 within the top 3, but also agree that the basic sound of the Mk8 Rhodes isn’t really superior to a restored vintage Rhodes. I’m interested in the new Rhodes, but more for the updates, and range of sounds at your fingertips, than the raw sound itself. I may end up with an Mk8 at some point, but I don’t see myself parting with the 70’s Rhodes.
The Vintage Vibe models have their pros, but there’s something about the sound that doesn’t quite pull me in the way an actual Rhodes does.
If you did another one hour improv video with a Rhodes I’d watch it. Just sayin’
It's been awhile since I've done one of those, I should do one soon
You, having played most of the "good ones", what is your usual go to? This sounds pretty good here in your video!
I've played most of them, I would say this is in the top 5 for sure. I don't know that I have a go-to, it just depends on the environment and vibe
I’m good with my Keyscape, and I dont like the V8 interface, you need the mouse to go to the next sound, many sounds are not usable, and you have to make it very big to be readable, takes all the screen… but I recognize the sounding is great, but with a little more xtra effects, Keyscape is way better with a massive choice of many different keys. And I receive a mail after dowloading the 15 days trial that I had 3 days to make up my mind before the price goes up from 239 to to 299… not nice..
keyscape rhodes are hard to compete with for sure
is the pro version really 60gb?
I know it's big, can't remember the exact size off the top of my head
By the way what MIDI controller are you using?!
Korg d1
@@SamTheBeardGuy I went around in circles and finally settled on the D1. haha
I think this is too expensive. And I simply do not feel it enough. And also, - Keyscape exists.
Sam, are you located in the U.S. ?
yep! I'm in the Dallas area
@@SamTheBeardGuy i wish you would be here in the Metro detroit area!!!!!
Must be something in the Air and water in that great Dallas/Ft. Worth area!
