It still doesn't change the fact you blew up one of the diode trios in the rectifier bridge by disconnecting the battery with the engine still running. You won't notice it now, but once both nators are under a heavy lead, that bad diode pattern WILL come back to haunt you... In order to know for sure, you're going to need a S.A.B.R.E. machine. You have to DC the pigtail to each 'nator, plug in the appropriate adapter, hook it up to the machine, connect the alligator clamp to the alt output post, and then measure the wave output of each one to make sure you don't have a bad diode pattern. Under normal charging conditions, you aren't going to notice, but if you DO have a bad diode, as soon as you put it under a massive, heavy load, it's going to make itself known. Maybe you did, maybe you didn't, but until you get both of them on some kind of oscilloscope, you can't know for sure. Do you REALLY want to wait until it becomes a thing or would you rather know now? (My automotive instructors had a heart attack, a stroke and three kittens each when I told them I did that once. I was 17 at the time, I'm now 45, and I doubt this law of Electro-magnetism has changed much.....)
Just a waste. As I said when gas runs low. See how much that works. Maybe u can set a bicycle next to it and pedal like gilligans island. Real emergencies don’t last a day or two. You’ll figure it out maybe
@@m0t1veOT like I said any emergency that would hinder gas delivery as would be in the future would be a big issue. Hell but keep wasting cash on car generators. If u like mobile power fine. It isn’t made for home use. Not really practical. But hey it’s cool right. Just ask how cool it is when no delivery for fuel. Just something to keep in mind.
"Florida Man" builds 10,000 lb. diesel-fired mobile generator complete with lawn chairs and party speakers! That shot of you sitting in your chair in the back of your truck should be your thumbnail.
Ray, using your ol'girl as a generator is very inspiring. As a mechanic myself, I get a new knee installed 08/29/23. I need new content to watch while healing. I Love It!
Your setup very much reminds me of the engine bay in our rigs (ambulances) back in the day when I was a newbie, I marvelled then, and have mad respect. Not only for the thought process put into this, but even more that the majority of what you installed was "factory" parts from GM. I hope you were able to put the fonishing touches on it prior to the arrival of Idalia, but I have been mostly praying the Idalia fizzles out before getting to you and your family, and that tjere will be no need for the additional electrons my friend. I pray that all of you stay safe and dry. Enjoy a cold one good dir and charge it to my account.🙏💜
Finally got my Duramax! It came with a 2006 Chevy Express 2500. I’m going to add a 2nd alternator dedicated to my Victron solar system for charging my Victron lithium batteries. First thing though is to get it started. Fuel system is contaminated and smelled like bad paint. Removed the tank and ordered a Fass pump and some extra fuel line and fittings. Replacing it all up to the motor and have a low pressure line kit on order also. Hopefully the CP3 and injectors survive long enough to get it home. I’m a Pilot Vehicle Driver and steer the trailers for the trucks pulling the wind turbine blades. This is going to be for work and my home and when I retire I’d like to have all the parts on hand to make it into a 4wd van and tear up the Four Corners States. Might become my coffin after that!
Ray, you need to install a transfer switch next to your home's electric panel. It will require a special output connector from your truck. You can then just plug the truck right into your house without needed any extension cords. Can't run the whole-house AC, but an run a window unit.
Add mini beer fridge and let it ride👍 didn't even have a Hurricane and found a tree limb straight down through my detached garage roof today. Calling Jake from State Farm tomorrow morning.... Have a great evening Ray ✌️
Not a truck person, BUT, your truck is SWEET!!! It's something that I would build for myself and the wife unit.(she likes pickups) I restore muscle cars in my retirement, and your truck is what I'd build to tow my car trailer. Great work, continued success with the shop, and don't forget to have yourself a great day!!!
I have a Tri-Fuel Honda 8000, and like someone else mentioned add a soft start kit to your central A/C. Propane is the way to go, it stores indefinitely and I buy cheap crappy used BBQ grills online for as low as $5.00-$30.00. The 20lb bbq tanks are easy to handle and easy to get filled. I currently have 6 of them and each tank runs the generator for 10-14 hours depending on load. In winter I hook up the Big Buddy propane heater if needed. I'm in southern AZ so I can count on one hand how many times I even use a heater. But your truck is cool, and I hope it's ready, they project a hurricane coming your way in the next week 👍
To the neigh sayers, it's your life not theirs. You stated back at the begining of doing this that you needed portable power like this if you were away from the house on your property. I see nothing wrong with using this as an alternative source of power in the event of an emergency. And it's also a sound plan to switch between sources if you need to use it full time for several days. I like what I'm seeing and I say keep up the work with thinking outside the box.
My boy here falls victim of a leaking water pump, radiator hose, radiator, glow plugs etc. I wish him luck but, everyone experienced in disaster recovery knows that running a fridge for eight hours a day is sufficient. Lights when it becomes dark etc.
I've been planning a similar build with an electric start lawnmower motor. Reason being that running the fridge through the night would be silent and the motor is just needed to be started when the battery goes low.
Great setup Ray! I bought a 15KW PTO generator for my diesel tractor. Runs whole house. Tractor does great at just above idle. About 5 gallons in a 15 hour period. But that's just what works for me because I don't have a Duramax😅😅
@@RainmanRayOffDuty But, but, you HAVE a tractor at home, you've shown it a few times sitting there aside your storage trailer! Your viewers remember EVERYTHING!
@@RainmanRayOffDuty you do have a small Japanese one... And it's a dieselengine, and it certainly has a PTO :) I think you just have a big hobby in pimping your Duramax...... Keep up the good work! Greetz from Holland
Ray, if you want to take this to the next level, lemme know. How about dual 220a STOCK alternators (meaning you can replace them at an auto parts store if they die) AND fully adjustable voltage control for EACH alternator?
im down with disabilities, its like you live the live i wanted to have. you are into tinkering like i am, i have fun watching you do things when i cant.
Anything that helps you and your family remain safe and secure is always a worthwhile endeavor. Whatever you decide is best for your situation, whether a generator, modifications to your truck, or just getting out, that decision is yours. Also, if you feel like getting out and going camping for a few days, the ability to have a power source would make your experience a lot more comfortable.
I cut and welded wheel notches into a 60" Knaack box and dropped 3 batteries on the passenger side into the bottom. I enclosed that and mounted a Milwaukee quick attach wall plate over it. I have a 6-pack fast charger and tool box mounted to this. Then I welded rails for the 24" rigid crates to fit across the wheel notch to the battery box. I now have a 24" x 35" area at the bottom for lesser used tools and 2 rigid crates full of often used tools. I filled the gap with two dewalt shallow bolt organizers and a roll of trash bags. In short I have a self-contained power and cordless charging package on the passenger side and cordless / misc tools on the driver side. It working really well except I have a gasser and single alternator. 2005 GMC Sierra 1500.
That actually isn’t a bad idea. To have that with your truck in the event you tow a travel trailer to go on vacations to get power when you are stopped somewhere that doesn’t have shoreline power like a truckstop or rest area the only thing I may have done differently is to purchase a heavier duty power inverter like what is sold at the truckstops. I bought mine for less than $300 and mine is a 3000 watt that is in the tractor trailer that I drive over the road with. I know you pretty much used what you already had to install in the toolbox and that is definitely OK also
Alrighty - I'm onboard. :) What would be more impressive is if you bought a window air conditioner unit with a built-in inverter (easier and smoother electrical pull) and somehow managed to build a "comfort cubby" enclosed area in the bed of the truck. "Ideas worthy of consideration" (TM). Cheers!
Pretty slick. Just need a DC cooler and umbrella. It'll be interesting to see how it actually performs under constant use. Looks a little light on battery capacity, but that would depend on the loads.

Hey Ray, check out the easy start for your house air conditioner. It will let you run the air conditioner with a smaller generator.
It’s not worth the risk to the a/c unit. Ray is better off not pushing it as would be a costly oops. I’ve spoken to multiple hvac guys about it.
