America's first lighthouse turns 300

Lighthouses are a storied part of American history. They've not only lighted the path for ships and boats, but also guided the way for the country's founding. This Wednesday marks the 300th birthday of America's first lighthouse, now a historic landmark. Mark Albert reports.

I’ve been fishing and boating in the harbor all my life and I throughly believe that Boston Light is still very important for navigation in the harbor. No matter how many electronics you have nothing can compare to the many shifting shoals, reefs and sandbars in the harbor and to get a bearing at night from the lighthouse gives you more self confidence as to were you exactly are.

The engineers and designers of that era were really brilliant! And the craftsmen and laborers that built the lighthouse were highly skilled and tough too! What a great video! 🙂

Big Bay lighthouse in the upper peninsula of Michigan is a bed and breakfast. Whitefish point has also recently added over night stays and white shoal I believe will be soon. But Big Bay is the only one that I've known for ppl to say is haunted. Ive wanted to go for years!

America's first lighthouse is the Barra Lighthouse (Farol da Barra), located in the city of Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil. First built in 1698, and rebuilt in 1839.

1783 is not 300 years. It's still very old..but Sandy Hook Light House a few hundred miles to the south west is the oldest.
