Got to see her with this great band at the old (much smaller than the current one) 9:30 Club in Washington, D.c. Amazing show! The Martinis and Bikinis album sounded as if the Beatles were taking a working vacation from making Revolver and decided to help out their friend Sam. So good
Takes me back to my teens, her lyrics and perfectly produced pop albums were such a huge contrast to the Seattle sound that I was living in, but there is still something powerful and surprisingly beautiful about her constant aching voice and mind.
Her voice is so naked & carry on a devastating feeling!!! I fell in love since the first time I've heard it. This album is such powerful and I still listening to this day. Regards from Mexico.
She was one of my favorite singers. Bought all her albums. Such a distinctive voice and music style. Never got to see her in concert so live videos like this are a treat.
She got a lot of airplay on WXRT in Chicago, never understood why her success wasn't more mainstream. The Whole Martinis and Bikinis album has been on my playlist since released.
She was very talented and wrote great songs. I saw her in concert and what we are seeing on this telecast is what you got in the concerts: she stood completely still. She didn't engage the audience. It was kind of creepy. I thought maybe it was stage fright, but she'd been performing in front of audiences since she was a young teenager singing her own Christian compositions. I think the lack on animation might have had something to do with getting traction with audiences.
@@gmartinz01 I don't think creepy is the right word. I would use the term unrelatable. She was unrelatable to the pop masses, but very relatable to the college crowd who appreciated good introspective songwriting and those who were "Losing my Religion" sort of speak during the early 90s.
@@igloozoo3771 I don't know how standing perfectly still throughout the concert and not acknowledging the crowd once (not even a "thank you") is relatable to anyone. She was more animated when she was performing Christian songs. I have absolutely no idea what was going on with her statue like performances.
I saw Sam Phillips at the Keswick Theater. She has a great personality and had such a great rapport with the crowd. And, oh yeah, I fell in love with her that night way back when.
Sam Phillips went the same route as Katy Perry;Once Christian artist's,then went Secular.THAT might be the emotion you're hearing(and disonance?).I can relate;I grew up heavily involved with church, the worship music etc,but chose to play Secular music when I got older.I never understood why some people would do that when I was younger,I do now.She went by Leslie Phillip's as a Christian artist,GREAT records;"Dancing with Danger"!Rockin!
I met "Sam" in 1983. She was on tour and had lost her purse with all of her credit cards and money. Her band had been let go due to finances so she was singing to tracks instead. The purse was eventually found.
Stark contrast to the Lilith Fair type female singer songwriters back then too. Bjork, Pj Harvey, Sam Phillips personally were at another level that didn't try to copy anyone or just try to solely represent Feminism.
I saw Sam Phillips shortly before her Die Hard movie was released. Great show. She was practicing staring at the audience in a menacing manner between a few of the songs. Quite funny
@@stephenpolly2793 hahahaha that was awesome. I didn't knew she was a singer. One day I was going through the Die Hard cast you know to se the before and after and I saw her name Sam Phillips and the surprise. She's a singer songwriter. Awesome.
"That was great" he said boringly????? WTF??? The words! The emotion of a woman not moving, frozen in her current relationship! Did you not listen to words Conan??? WTF???
I left my conscience like a crying child. Locked the door behind me. Put the pain on file. Broken like a window I see my blindness now. And I need love .. Not some sentimental prison. I need god not the political church. I need fire to melt the frozen sea inside me. And I need love.. Should have been a big hit for Sam but what do I know? I am just a loving kind Atheist out of step with most because I have never committed a crime or have been a hypocrite (if I was, I knew it, I don't fool myself). Please don't write me about my beliefs .. it's obnoxious and my cruel pen will hit you hard with a lot of facts you won't like as I know more about these things than you..
i agree with Conan's lack of enthusiasm. Sam sings so lifeless in this song. she was much more alive when she was doing Christian music as Leslie Phillips. with future grear Dan Huff pegging the recording needle with his amazing guitar work on her second and third albums, her voice matched it with intensity and excitement.
Can't put my finger on it, but something is just not gelling here. The band is laying down a really excellent groove for the song, but she sounds entirely out of sync with them - not the beat - just the whole vibe of her voice. Her studio vocal for this is much smoother. Here, she sounds like she's dragging the whole band down, holding them back.
Then I assume you liked her more for her message than the music. I think her musical direction from The Turning on was SO much more challenging, creative and mature than those early albums on Myrrh.
@@shawnuel I think her early music was much better. I don't have a problem with any Christian artist who goes secular. Take your talent and go as far you can with it. Be successful. But when a entertainer becomes an "artist," sometimes they start doing music that is pleasing to them, nothing wrong with that, rather than music that entertains an audience..If you want to keep an audience, you better make sure you are making music that your audience likes.
@@donmcc6573 That’s fair. But I will say that I tend to more appreciate artists that follow their own muse as opposed to those who are simply seeking a larger audience. The real magic happens when they manage to do both, simultaneously!
Sam Phillips + T-Bone Burnette = Magic

I'd say you hit it out of the ballpark here, Sam. Wow. Great band, especially the underappreciated Jerry Scheff on bass.

I discovered Sam Phillips when her music was used in the movie Ruby In Paradise. Struck gold on both the movie and Sam as an artist.
Great players!

I think in the 90s you could get away with the "statue" stage presence though. She had the whole haunting eyes thing too.
thank you for this. always wished she would break big with the record.
Fall in love with this song! A masterpiece of Sam!
she is one of the unrecognized geniuses of the 90s-00s
This song is so beautiful it makes ma cry. Thanks for posting.
God, she played as Katya in Die Hard : With Vengeance
Sam and T Bone together on Conan. Wow. All the dissonances are on display here. It feels like there's a story there or something.
Best song ever?? Magical Sam!!!❤❤

A beautiful performance of a beautiful song by a beautiful woman.
You got that right! Fantastically talented singer and a beautiful lady to match! That whole album is just outstanding!
I don’t even remember where I heard of her, but I wore this record out. Brings back lots of memories. ❤️🔥

BTW that's definitely Mark Ribot.
Just brilliant.

T-Bone Burnett with sunglasses on guitar . He was her husband at the time.

1994 wow.
It's hard to believe only one year after this she was involved in the Federal Reserve robbery and died in a helicopter crash.
Is that Marc Ribot on lead guitar?

Right? So great, no idea who it is
Mickey Curry? So good whoever it is.

When Leslie left Christian music to become Sam she definitely took her creativity a different direction also.
Is it meant to be out of tune?
part of her style i think

She's playing it cool. But she is very detached. Probably why she never hit it big. But that's not what's important anyway.
Maybe nerves. You’re on next. Let’s see how you do 🖕
I don't know much about her but her voice in this performance really grates on me.
No background singers. All the big artists use them. They smooth out the vocals. This is Sam Phillips style
deeng cant believe this the bad chick from Die hard 3 .
A loveless marriage becoming your emotional prison.
Sam was loved regularly by Rush Limbaugh and she enjoyed it.
That's disappointing
Limbaugh was a horrible human being. I can only guess that Same was (and is) repulsed by that pig.
Gross🤮

As we all know, there can only be one singer per type.
