Canon A1 film advance lever fixed

- I’ve been working out how to fix my canon A1 for a few days, so i took it apart entirely and manipulated some of the gears to see if needed a new part for this camera and i found one of the solutions being the electro magnet, that tells your camera to shutter where the gears meet the electric side, was broke. Initially i read that no one was able to fix this, then someone else said it was their battery, so i tried all of it. I bought a new battery, bought a new lens, checked for faulty wiring, then cleaned it. So, i decided i decided i had nothing to lose and took apart some of the gears and narrowed down that the gears were fine and it must be something on the electric side. As soon as i started of that side i moved the electromagnet to see if that would work. I did it a few time on and off the magnet and it felt like it kept getting stuck... until i heard and saw the gears move. I wasn’t even sure what happened but i put the battery back and in and low and behold, the advance lever went the whole way back without getting stuck. The shutter wasn’t working still but i played around with the multiple exposure lever beneath it and it finally shuttered. I was scared it wouldn’t do it again so i basically sat there kept pulling the lever and hitting the shutter button for like a half hour until i realized this may be a permanent solution. Anyways thank you for watching. If you have any additional advice that i may have left out on how to fix it, feel free to comment. Sorry i tried to keep it short!
Warning: this may not be specifically your issue, there are multiple ways your cameras gears can break, and or wiring can be faulty.
Thanks for watching!
Bravo! My mom passed and someone broke in a stole her high end digital camera (among other things) before I was able to clean out her house.. They didn't find this. I wanted to use it (go back to film) to remember my mom. After finding the battery, I got one shot off before it jammed. This was THE fix. Thank you.
I am SO glad I found this video! I have looked everywhere trying to fix this issue and was about to just give up on this camera! Such a simple fix - the hardest part was getting the small screws back in. Thank you!!!
Thank you! Just found this video. Have had my A1 since 1984.
This actually worked! Thank you! Mine's film advance lever got stuck and if I press the shutter button the LED in the viewfinder just shows EEEE EE. This was actually very simple and straight to the point so that I can do it my self without spending money to have it fixed at a store.
So after doing it once, I did notice that the film advance lever gets stuck again. What I did was reopen that bottom plate and kept advancing the lever and pressing the shutter button a couple of times for a few minutes, just checking to see if it gets stuck again and releasing the wire if so. I then returned the bottom panel back then tried shooting and so far its still working. Hopefully it will continue to do so until I test it using a film in the future. Hope this helps!
I was really desperate after a couple hours of trying to fond the error and this was it! Thank you so much :D
I'm just after checking this on an AE-1 that was sitting on a shelf for about 10 years and it seems to have fixed it. Ready to load in some film now. Thanks for the video.
That's great! So the AE-1 is not that different from the A-1? I'm having the same issue with my AE-1 but still a bit too scared to open it up
If you’re a noob to film cameras like me, make sure that your shutter is released first when you pick up your camera. All you do is press the shutter release button as if you’re taking a picture. When my camera arrived, the shutter was already loaded to take a pic; meaning the previous owner had already winded the advance lever so I had to “take the pic” to fix the stuck advance lever problem. I had no idea about this so it was driving me crazy for a bit lmao it could all be so simple
This comment saved me. Thank you
This helped me thank you so much! However it keeps getting stuck again. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening again?
Tanks for the video! In my case your fix releases the lever but the shutter button is "soft" and doesn't take pictures. Maybe it's the battery issue or dirty magnets...
Thanks, had exactly same problem, followed and fixed it quick thanks to your vid. Cheers
Great video. This works!
Oh my goood I gave up hope on my camera but this was so easy to fix!! thanks a lot :D
You just fixed my camera thank you so much !!!
I've been to a lot of flea markets and it seems that the sellers who are selling their Canon A-1, I noticed that this was the constant issue that I encountered when I try to do the advance film lever and the lever seems to be stuck. So I assume that the battery makes the mechanism to unlock itself then. Thanks.
What does the linkage to the left of the magnet do? Mine is over to the right compared to yours keeping the magnet stuck and the film advance won’t move and the shutter won’t fire
just saved our camera too, thanks!
Thank you, worked like a charm!
Thank you! My camera is now fixed
I can't get the bloody screws off! They're screwed in so tightly!
They're so small I'm afraid I'll strip them. Any ideas?
Olórin I’m literally have the same issue right now
A bit of WD-4O on the screws, leave it for 15 mins to let the oil seep into the screw thread, then try again
use isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud to clean the screws
This definitely helped but mine kept getting stuck again right after... it is because the film is not loaded in?
Saved it for me too thanks!
Thank you so much it really help me. Thank you again
How do you open the bottom of the camera?
Worked for me, but it did it again after a few minutes. Might be a battery issue, even though it's new. I took it out and put it back in and it worked, so I might have to do that regularly. Anyone got the same issue?
This helped me but the plastic case looks broken on mine and so it gets stuck everytime I advance the lever. Probably gonna have to take it somewhere.
Lol!!! Thank you so much this was all I needed to do!!! You rock!
Can anyone help - I did this trick and it worked for all of a few hours before getting stuck again. This time no matter how frequently I move the piece, the advance is still stuck
Thanks worked for my av1
and what if the shutter does not go off when moving the magnet?
I’m having this same issue, can anyone help? shutter doesn’t fire?
You are a life saver.
I actually love you. Thank you.
Fixed mine! Thanks so much!
hey guys what kind of screwdriver should i buy to remove the bottom part of the canon a1?
Ifixit repair kit has a screw head perfect for it
Amazing, it worked great
You saved it thank u so muchhh
I tried this and it wasn’t stuck but it still won’t advance
I have the same problem with my F1N. I keep on advancing the shutter lever by the shutter curtain keeps on returning back; hence, the cocking procedure is taking forever! How can I fix that nagging problem? Thanks in advance!
This worked immediately then got stuck again, won't even let the shutter release. :( 🤔
Same problem :/
@@samuelmorrison148 I've given up for now. Might try a 'weaker' battery. 🤞🤞
Same here, how to solve it??
Did you resolve this issue?
I had this same problem and assumed it was the battery tried new batteries still didn't work, but then I put a little piece of aluminum foil under the negative part of the batter to make it fit tighter and now works
mine released but still the same
Hello, with that problem it happened to you that the photometer marked E instead of the aperture and speed data? like this in capital letters EEEE EE
Thank you!
Good video, but sound is too low and of poor quality. It's muddy.
thank you so much man
thank you very much
Amazing! Thank you.
Thank you so much. I did this and it fixed my issue
Thank you!!! :)
thank you saved me!
I think I have the same problem but cant pull the lever back, has somebody an idea?
Wow. Thanks!!!!
i have a canon av 1 with the same problem, i took it apart but the interior isn’t the same, can anyone help me?
And replacing the shutter brakes will fix rhe zing
thank you!!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you
My part has been stuck so long it seems to have become magnetized, anyone know how to demagnetize it?
have you found a solution? i cant move the lever back and i think its also because of this
$55.00 a bargain for Canon A1.
When I did it, the shutter opened but won't close, winder still stuck 😅 Now my A1 is lying at the camera hospital
same here. Wondering how to trigger the shutter after one time fixing my wind lever.
Works one time, then it gets stuck again
That is actually a very good sign that is your only problem and it's not something worse. Mine still works after a couple weeks so I'd say it's permanent. I actually used it a few days ago.
When I was doing research on forums I saw people say to get a new electromagnet, but i figured the only reason you should get a new one is if it doesn't attract at all. And to me there's no point in getting a new magnet if I can just buy a new camera for the same price and have to do less work.
My EM kept getting stuck after the first time I tried it too, but... my lever was fixed and I was now able to pull it back, so I knew I was close to solving the problem.
Only after I put my newer battery in it and kept troubleshooting and undoing the EM and shooting did my camera start to shoot normal after about 15 minutes of monotonous undoing it and shooting. I was to timid to call it fixed but it hasn't got stuck since.
When you say it worked, did your camera shutter or were just able to pull the lever back? And if you didn't know, you should take your battery out after every use because the camera drains it even when it's locked or not in use. So it could be the battery even if it's only a few days new.
@@Capn_FTB I was able to pull it back once, then I got stuck again
@@bosphaxay7109 Same problem..
Great video. I followed the instructions given and it worked but after releasing the magnet, pulling the lever back and pressing the shoot button, the lever remained in the original position as if the button hadn’t been pushed.
@@bosphaxay7109 You could try changing the battery, worked for me.
thank you so much, this video helped a lot!
thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks a lot !
