    Is it possible to have multiple layers of audio events in one clip?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      An Audio Clip does not currently support multiple layers (rows) of Audio Events within a single Audio Clip. If you have one audio clip ”audio sample”, you can then edit it and divide it / chop it into several audio events (which can also be seen as audio pieces). You can then re-arrange the audio events within that Audio Clip. Give these audio events different pitch curves / automation, panning curves, volume etc.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      @Oussama El Zein thanks, there is currently no way to have more than one row of audio events within an audio clip. There is also no obvious "track comping" feature like in Logic Pro X etc. I'm not bothered by it though.

      Can you give us a more detailed tutorial on the sampler?
      Bitwig only gives us an overview and it’s great it can do those things, but some of us need more details how
      Also, something that annoys me is that grouped tracks seem to cut off reverb and delay tails when bounced
      The only solution seems to be to record the track out to an audio channel

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      @Nowism Hmm... at this point I’m not sure what you mean with layering multiple audio clips like midi clips. Are you referring to the device Instrument Layer? On a midi track you only have one row/lane of midi note data. There is no comping / multiple takes within one single track row at the moment. But it’s requested by the community. Sorry for not fully understanding what you are searching for. ;)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому +1

      Neon P Lotus I’ve never bumped into issues with reverb and delay on groups. Are they sends or inserts? I did some precious detailed sampler tutorial, but I guess we could give it another go with deeper insights. What would you like to see in such video? I did show how to create a granular choir kind of sound in one of the streams with the sampler. When I’m releasing the new sound pack there will be a showcase video where I talk more about the sampler too. So I guess it’s in the pipeline. Thanks for the suggestion Neon!

    Another way to edit CC parameters is to open the full midi window by pressing SHIFT + TAB.
    You will see another option (called "automation editor panel") pop up next to the "velocity/note expression editor panel".
    You'll have control over any track automation you'd normally do in the arrangement window.

    Hey, Mattias! Thank you very much for shedding the light on audio editing this time and also for mentioning me with so detailed answer! I'm so touched) Thank you! Indeed it was a problem for me several times to use MIDI CC because of it, and now I know :)
    As for audio editing, I find myself avoiding using and processing audio too much, somehow it doesn't inspire me in production, but from what I can see in your video, Bitwig is in quite good shape for it. I remember the tutorials of track construction in so-called Trance 2.0 genre, where the author (Protoculture) suggests adding quite complex and deep audio transformations, especially on transitions, which sort of creates unique character of the whole track. He typically shows everything in Cubase thanking it for audio editing capabilities, but it looks like Bitwig has many of them, too.
    Thanks again for the video, Mattias! All the creativity and productivity to you for the rest of this week! :)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому +1

      Hey Alexey, glad to help out. I forgot to mention your other question but all in due time. Yeah I mean it’s just a few tools but you can do a lot with that. As I explain I almost always work at clip level and not as deep. Because we make most cool stuff with audio devices instead. But for banging some 808 bass with pitch glides etc it’s cool and accurate way of working. I never felt I missed a certain audio edit tool yet in Bitwig, ad we have the cool devices. But... Bitwig 3.0... the wait is unbearable *lol*. All the creativity to you also my friend! See you in the next matrix!

    • @aclexvideo
      @aclexvideo 5 років тому +1

      @@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much, my friend! Yes, clip level feels more comfortable for me, too, the audio events look useful for those complex slicing and editing, when you intend to really amaze the audience =) And yes, you're perfectly right! I'm using built-in devices more and more mainly because of how they all tied together and support all the unique features of Bitwig. That's indeed one additional separate feature for built-in devices.
      Bitwig 3.0 yes, we can hardly keep waiting) But yes, I imagine, how it would be decent and time-consuming to look and touch all the new features of Grid, that I'm also afraid of it a little bit :) Like video game release, you know))
      Thank you very much for your wishes, Mattias! See you soon! ;)

    Just subbed, although I have difficulties with some of the workflow decisions, I am still attracted to Bitwig and you just dominate the tutorials :) One example where Bitwig can improve would be automatic crossfades in the audio event micro-edit window, rather than overwriting. another would be more tool-less options such as context aware fade-in and fade-out if the mouse pointer is near the top left or top right of the audio clips. I don't want to be referring to an info panel to make a fade. I'm going to continue learning about Bitwig because I have a lot of confidence in the programming. The workflow decisions are hard to get on board with, but recently I did move from Sketchup to FreeCad (Solidworks) so I do know that pain can pay off.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the sub. Yeah sometimes it can be tedious to switch software.
      In Bitwig you can drag fade in / fade out without any additional tools. Just hover above the top half of an audio clips start / end, and you get a "white handle" which you can drag left/right to create your fade-ins. It's super quick.
      Furthermore you can hold the mouse above the fade curve and press down ALT + drag, which will adjust the curvature to be more/less steep. Enjoy! ;) Bitwig has powerful yet super easy and straightforward audio editing tools.
      Glad you enjoy my content. Happy to share!

    I think the visualisation of the audio should be larger. I also think that the Eraser tool should create a short fade when used to split audio ckips. It seems to make a fadeout but not a fade in.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      Hi Dyallo. Glad u enjoyed the video. It really depends. Sometimes you want the waveform to begin without any fade. It’s really easy though to apply fade in / outs on multiple clips if necessary. It should maybe be available as a option / setting so you can predefine what YOUR preferred setting is. So maybe you want all your clips to have 10ms fade in. And then Bitwig always applies that curve to all clips. That would be a cool feature. Thanks again for watching and commenting with feedback!

    Love your tutorials Mattias, learning so much as a new Bitwig user, so thanks for that! Question though as i didn't see you do this. • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Not yet! But it's very easy to add a pitch glide with the track-automation in Bitwig Studio. But you can't use the fadein-fadeout (white line) when quickly editing clips. It's nice in Logic to make these tape stop effects. ;D

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому +1

      Yeah I get what u mean. That would be a nice additional feature, but sometimes linked clips can be confusing. I think it’s usually called linked- or alias-clips. I guess people from FL misses those linked clips. In Logic you can do them by holding alt+shift. I don’t really miss it in Bitwig though. If I need three different tracks to play the same midi I just make them all listen to one midi track with the master lead midi melody or what not. There are many ways to Rome. ;) But yes it might be useful on some occasions.

    One thing I am trying to figure out is when recording samples into the arranger for a scene how to get the sample to end on the grid. I find that after recording I have to go back and manually edit the sample tracks and adjust them to the grid.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hi Hectito, yeah that's how sampling works (ie. audio recording) in arranger view. I don't see any problem in this. The good thing is that you can edit (cut) multiple tracks to cut them at the same timeframe, just select your region (background of the selection turns light blue, select by starting to press at the bottom region of one of any track). Then just press CMD+E = split. Unfortunately this is not possible with the regular knife-tool (5), which can only split one clip at a time.
      Hope the above editing info helps. 👑😋

    Thanks. In the bottom view one can right click on the audio and reveal the underlying audio file on the file system. I need it sometimes to sample/de-noise the recording. The panning shortcuts at 7:27 are kind of blowing my mind! It looks incredibly useful. I wonder... Does Bitwig have a similar kind of thing as well?

    Hey is there a way to take a clip on the timeline and when I move it to the right it moves everything else to the right of it along with it? This is called Ripple editing in Reaper and it allows me to easily move everything over so I can insert another section or more time into the song. I don't know how to do this in bitwig without a bunch of hassle.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому +2

      Hi, I don't think there is a specific "move everthing from this point forward to make space for something else" key command or option. But it's how you approach the work. It's very easy to select a whole section (or second half of a song) and just move it.
      There are two distinct ways of selecting multiple clips depending on where you have the mouse in a track lane.
      RANGE SELECT - Start the mouse select (left button) in the bottom of a track lane.
      Now you select a specific range (it's marked by a white line from where you begin with a white line where you drag your mouse).
      When you release the mouse the range will be shown with two distinct white lines and a washed-out whiteish look on all content within the selected range.
      If you press the mouse and drag on anything within the range you will move that "section" of the track.
      CLIP SELECT - Start the mouse select (left button) in the upper part of a track lane.
      Now you select clips within a rang. All the clips you select will get a black top bar.
      Release the mouse when you have selected the clips you want to be included in the clip select.
      If you press the mouse and drag on any of these clips you selected with the clip select (those with a "black bar") you will move multiple clips.
      So in your case I would probably use Range select (with the white lines) which moves everything between those two points you choose with the mouse.
      It's not that hard and I think it works great.
      A ripple edit like you suggest would be a cool addition, but as of now you can use any of these other options to move "ranges" of clips to make room if you want to introduce new sections in the middle of your track.
      Hope the info helps.
      Have a wonderful easter!

    hello! im wandering how can i split audio stereo to 2 mono?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Pan. Bitwig Studio has a device for that called Stereo Split. It's the easiest solution to split a stereo track into two mono signals in Bitwig. Then just add what ever processing you want to left/right side. If you want to be more fiddly add an Instrument Layer device. Add two Tool devices. Pan the first tool hard Left, and the second hard Right. Then add whatever processing you want after each Tool. But I would recommend the Stereo Split device Pan. ;D

      Yes transients you can use between tracks via an audio receiver modulator. Onsets, stretch etc not possible like that

    • @MattiasHolmgren

      There are a few ways you can achieve this. One way is to throw in the Replacer device on your audio track. Then in the "Generator" section of the Replacer add a sampler with your sample / samples. If you want variation you can even add a randomizer so the triggered C note (or whatever) is turned to random keys = random samples playing from your sampler. ;D Now you have effectively created a Drum Replacer plugin in Bitwig Studio.
      Hope the info helps.
      Maybe I can do a video showing how this is done in the future. Cheers George!

    bitwig timestretching is a pain in the ass when you get down to words and editing on the arranger like I do word for word. Wherever you cut a clip it should automatically consolidate it from that point.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      Yeah you really have to consolidate like a manic sometimes. But there are other flaws in say Logic. If you have a sample and duplicate it and reverse, the first sample get reversed too since they are linked. And you have to make it unique. Small details we just have to learn.
      But it could exist as an option maybe. ”Consolidate cut clips automatically.”
      Thanks for the suggestion Vegas.

    Is it possible to layer an audio file and a midi file. i.e. I want to layer my midi kick pattern on top of my sub audio loop.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Of course you can do that. There are several ways. Easiest is just to program a midi Bass above that audio sub layer. Or have a top layer with a gated Tool device (connect audio side chain modulator to the amplitude - so Tool only let through audio from the midi instrument whenever that solid audio sub track plays. Many ways to do this or set this kind of layering up, you imagination is the only boundry.

    is it possible for bitwig to not remove audio region if i accidently put another one on top of it? i come from old cubase and this is annoying when moving audio in the timeline because it will remove the audio region instead of just disabling what was there under it... i hope it makes sense its hard to explain but in bitwig im always stretching the audio containers very often because of that and always need to count how much measures i have left and need before moving audio, if not then it will eat the audio that was there

      Hi Puspan, I need to know a bit more about your issue. How do you have your recording setup. What kind iof audio interface do you use. What audio driver are you using in Win / OSX? What mic are you using?
      When you record audio into a brand new audio track with no other stuff going on. Does this work ok?
      CHeck what your AUDIO INPUT is on that one track. Input should point to your microphone.
      If you hear other stuff you might accidentally have change the input of a track to say a BUS / MASTER.
      That way your audio track will record everything coming from your master. ;(
      Which is not a good idea.
      Make sure your INPUTS and OUTPUTS are correctly setup for the tracks.
      A brand new default project should be setup properly.

    Hi Mattias, is there an option to normalise samples in Bitwig? In FL Studio and Studio One there is such an option but in Bitwig I didn't find this option. Do you know something about that?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому +1

      Hi Dan, I don't think there is an normalise option for audio clips at the moment. There is a gain option in the information panel to the left, so you can adjust gain per clip. But you have to do it manually. It would be nice if they add a button at the side of the Gain slider which will normalise the sample. And also an option in the preferences to normalise on import (if one would want that) when we drag a sample from the browser into the arrangement / samplers etc. Most people probably work with normalised samples so it's not an issue in most use cases. Thanks for writing Dan.

In general I produce epic and dramatic hybrid music (may be orchestral), post rock and also Melodic Dubstep / Futurebass. I come from a background of many genres since I work as a game / film composer. You have to cover many genres for the clients. 😀
