  • In episode 07 of the Bitwig Basics Series we look at midi editing, the piano roll. And also how to work with MPE (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression data) in Bitwig.
    As usual I give away my favourite short keys / key commands to work more swiftly in Bitwig Studio.
    We look at the different functionalities Bitwig offers for core midi editing. Importantly, you have some nice sweet controls to introduce "chaos" to give your midi data more life.
    The native plugins of Bitwig also give you direct MPE data capabilities. MPE is a quite new standard which stands for "MIDI Polyphonic Expression", or "Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression". In normal MIDI, Channel-wide messages (such as Pitch Bend) are applied to all notes being played on a single MIDI Channel. In MPE, each note is assigned its own MIDI Channel so that those messages can be applied to each note individually.
    So MPE gives us the ability to do individual note glides on each note within a single midi track.
    We talk about how to set this up with third party plugins too so don't worry if you want to use Serum, Zebra 2 and Omnisphere.
    In the video the title for this specific Bitwig chapter reads "MPE Editing" which can be a tad misleading, it should read "Per Note Expression Editing". But you get the point.
    I hope you enjoy this video.

    I'm so glad I found this channel. Excellent videos.
    I'm loving this MPE stuff. Love that Bw "patches" support into non-MPE aware synths. I assume that the pitch bend will be global to all note instances being played at the time and not note-specific (not actually polyphonic expressions). It's still great through. I love the pitch bending visibility and editability right on the notes in the editor. pitch changes are not "hidden" in some property panel or separate edit track.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 років тому

      Thanks Terence, I'm glad you like this Bitwig series. There's a lot to discover and very intuitive interface in Bitwig. Apparently MPE works so that it assigns each note a midi channel of it's own, that's why it can have any note drifting in pitch by itself if you want do glide notes in different directions etc. Or have vibrato on just a few of the notes. Neat, love it!

      You're very welcome! Oh yeah? I was also into Cubase for many years...way back. Indeed I think Bitwig is superior in certain areas (especially for electronic music). Although it still doesn't do multitrack editing (ie. editing many audio tracks at once / same time) that's just more a function you need when you record live bands etc. And I don't record live drumkits that much anymore. And if I do I probably just sum it to a stereo track anyways. Because I like it simple and rough. ;) The modulators of Bitwig is really a game changer. No need for Max For Live fiddling. It just works and is perfectly integrated in the software. The sleek design also gets me "going". Happy to hear about your experience in the swap too Eaglechild. What's your favourite parts of Bitwig suite? Any specific tool, modulator or plugin you find useful?

    Thanks for the vid! I always learn something new when I watch your vids. I didn't know about muting individual notes, so useful! It would also be great if they had a chaos for start/length since that would be helpful to humanize as well. And hopefully they'll add more note editing features in the piano roll like FL Studio (i.e. chopping tool, etc).

    • @MattiasHolmgren

      Hi Joe, yeah I'm also voting for more midi and audio editing tools. It's very rudimentary tools today, but we have devices that can handle many things in Bitwig. So that's kinda cool! I totally understand their development focus. Since the devices and modularity is what makes Bitwig stand out today among the competition. Logic and FL Studio piano roll tools are insane. Love em. Thanks for watching Joe!

    • @joeseabreeze
      @joeseabreeze 5 років тому +1

      Mattias Holmgren I can see their direction for being modular, but targeting live djs seems a bit obsolete. Most djs are song producers now, so most are comfortable using a full blown daw. But I’m ok with the current state of the software. It makes sound design a lot of fun and I can use my main daw for most of the editing, mixing, and mastering. Good stuff!

    Hi Mattias,
    Good tutorial, I've watched a few others from you and learned alot. One question tho, maybe I'm just missing something, but I cannot seem to find the command to merge two or more MIDI notes together. This merging function is kinda crucial that I use everyday in Studio One. Hopefully to know your insight. Thx! --Sebastian

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hi Owl (Sebastian), thanks. Happy to hear you enjoy the videos! I never used such a merging notes function myself. I merge clips all the time, but never single notes. I know there is a legato function which makes the notes attach at the end / beginnings but not a note-merge feature. Bitwig lacks some midi editing functions like you see in Studio One, Logic, FL etc. But in general you can do most things with modulators instead (to the midi).
      What kind of workflow do you have where you see the need to merge notes?
      My two workflows when composing with midi in Bitwig:
      1.1 Record midi
      1.2. Maybe quantize and move some notes around if I did a misstake.
      1.3. Done
      2.1 Paint notes in. Since quantize is active the notes stay on the set grid.
      2.2 Done.
      For any arpeggiation etc I usually just add midi arp device or other midi effecting modulator devices. So no further editing is done on the actual notes in the piano roll. But rather on a "plugin" level.
      Cheers,
      Matt

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 роки тому

      Hi, What OS are you running Jim?
      To Zoom in / out in Bitwig (the arranger timeline) in OSX:
      1. Hover above the timeline counter (1, 2, 3, 4 etc.) of your arrangement.
      2. Three fingers (on trackpad) and drag up down to zoom in / out.
      3. Three fingers (on trackpad) and drag left right to pan/move - left/right.
      So if you just want to zoom in and out, use up / down motion while holding three fingers on the timeline counter bar.
      Does this makes sense? ;)
      Thanks Jim!

    IF I'm right it's possible to give the piano roll notes colors based on pitch, righ? If so, is it also possible to choose which color each note has? For example, let's say I would want my C's to be red, then would this be possible? I have gotten used to certain pitches having certain colors (from long experience with cubase)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 роки тому

      no, it's not possible to have different colors depending on note values. Though I know what u mean, (old Cubase user since way back). Bitwig shows notes with less velocity slightly dimmer and notes with higher velocity with more "opaque" color.

  • @teddym2808
    @teddym2808 4 роки тому +1

    Is there any easy way to select a bunch of notes with varying velocities that you need to make the same velocity? (eg a synthesised kick drum) and make them the identical velocity of your choice?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hi Teddy, easy. Just select your bunch of notes. Go the the information panel (left side), look up Velocity, press that little arrow to the right of Velocity. A velocity panel opens. Adjust the Spread (to zero if you want the same velocity), then use the Mean to control where to place the velocity between 0-127. ;)
      That Velocity panel is really helpful, use Chaos to introduce more humanity and randomness to your hi-hats etc.
      Hope the info helps.

      Thanks, how do you mean syncing the loop section of the arranger to the midi editor?
      There are two main project composition views in Bitwig:
      1. Arranger View.
      2. Clip Launching View.
      When launching any clip, you will also start the arrangement view playback. So they are locked / synced.
      Did you watch my clip launching video? ua-cam.com/video/S6Gk0kU2qTg/v-deo.htmlsi=vdg5IAD5qhV-S38U
      and this one: ua-cam.com/video/GumfH2b4Ye0/v-deo.htmlsi=B0dtjDP1f3otgzrC

    Do you know if it's possible to use MPE on individual drum notes with Maschine as a plugin instrument? I think it's possible with bitwig's drum machine because each cell is basically a sampler. But with Maschine, activating the MPE leads to an odd behaviour where different notes in a bitwig clip only trigger a single sound (pitched as expected, that's the positive side) instead of the whole kit. Do you see a way to get Maschine to respond to MPE properly? I know that Maschine MIDI settings in groups and sounds are really tricky and i don't fully understand Bitwig...

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 роки тому

      Hi, I seldome use MPE in my own music production work. Each cell in a sampler is indeed just a device slot to host all other kind of devices (samplers, instruments, 3rd part plugins or whatnot) which is very powerful. 🌞🎉 I would check the Bitwig manual on thr MPE issue to see whats going on. Might be helpful.

    • @SamSilk
      @SamSilk 3 роки тому +1

      @@MattiasHolmgren As I was digging a little deeper on this matter I discovered that MPE is in fact a "trick" and not an addition to the usual MIDI norm. To achieve MPE, Bitwig force-assigns an individual MIDI channel (from the usual 16) to each note that would be playing at the same time, apparently starting with channel 2. If you have 2 notes playing simultaneously, they's be assigned channels 2 and 3. With 3 notes playing at the same time, channels 2,3,4... So I guess unless it's a Bitwig instrument, there will always be an issue with multichannel instruments as Bitwig overrides the channels you assigned manually. I'm pretty sure MPE can only work with instruments receiving on "all channels" as a MIDI input channel. As soon as your instruments needs several channel, it can't work.

      Hi there is currently no step sequencing in Bitwig. To achieve step sequencing I use the Maschine Jam connected to Bitwig, but it requires extra hardware. Step Sequencing is a function that is very much wanted.
      For what I've seen Bitwig development focus on the various midi (and audio) devices rather than the midi piano roll functionality. The piano roll in Bitwig is really simple and clean. Not too much functionality in there yet like we see in Cubase, Logic and FL Studio.
      BUT...
      The midi devices on the other hand are very powerful in Bitwig and you can do all sorts of weird programming with them. =)
      I would love to see step sequencing implemented though as well, since I use it a lot when I program string runs / passages in game music and film scores. Cheers, Matt

    Thanks, Mattias, another quite in-depth overview of another part of Bitwig! Saw some critics on piano roll and editor in Bitwig, but, I don't know, I've hardly faced any limitation here for all the time I use it :)
    But I have just a couple of questions on it, maybe you know:
    1. Do you know any "fast" way to edit values of MIDI CC other, than those mapped to buttons on skeleton button view (Volume, Pan etc., 5 total)? I think, I saw a whole menu somewhere, but can't find it, maybe it was Ableton Live =)
    2. Again, I think, I saw somewhere, but is there any ability to edit several parts on parallel tracks at once? Sometimes it's quite handy, and I really think, I used to do it in Bitwig, but don't find it anymore, when I need it.
    Thanks again for a video, mate! Good luck and inspiration for the following week!

      Hi Alexey, yeah I mean the ”hard” midi editing features are limited. But as we discussed it’s the ”soft” modular midi devices which makes Bitwig so awesome and sets it apart from the competition.
      There’s indeed more available params to edit. Ill make sure to add it to the next video.
      You can edit multiple lanes, yes. Next video tomorrow ;)
      Thanks again for commenting and feedback Alexey!
      Cheers,
      Matt

    i notice bitwig doesn't have a input that saves cpu meaning if im dealing with autotune crazy artist i have to place a different plugin on each track, whats bad if they are a group. i tried routing one send to every track, that sound robotic.
    is another way around this?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 роки тому

      Hi Yahshua, I very rarely use autotune plugins, and when I do, I use 1 instance on 1 vocal track.
      Autotuning needs to have very clean data to work good, so it's not a good idea to put autotune at group level if you have 3-4 vocal tracks going on in a track.
      That said, if the vocals don't overlap in the group level it should be fine though.
      I don't have any other workaround than 1 autotune plugin per track for best performance.
      What computer spec are you using?

    I am baffled when you talk about the Grid settings? Why did you click automatic, and what does that have to do with zooming in or out? Why did you change from trio to straight? I really do not understand that, and would be grateful if you can help. Great video.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hi, when you zoom in and out you can see the grid adjusting according to your "zoom level". If you have automatic the snap is going to follow the visual grid setting.
      Trio = triplets, straight = straight notes on beats.
      Quantize is a bit fiddly in Bitwig because it has two settings. One setting for the quantize key-command, and one setting for the drag snap. I think this can be a bit confusing and I would have liked one coherent quantize setting which would act both on drag-snap and quantize key command. It's even hard to explain in words. lol. ;D
      Hope the info helps!

    what is MPE editing?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому +1

      Oh, basically Bitwig is capable of capturing and editing MPE data.
      More in-depth info on MPE:
      One of the biggest recent developments in MIDI is MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE). MPE is a method of using MIDI which enables multidimensional controllers to control multiple parameters of every note within MPE-compatible software.
      In normal MIDI, Channel-wide messages (such as Pitch Bend) are applied to all notes being played on a single MIDI Channel. In MPE, each note is assigned its own MIDI Channel so that those messages can be applied to each note individually.
      Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression or MPE is a term that applies to a new class of controllers called PMCs (Polyphonic Multidimensional Controllers). The arrival of this technology has sparked a controller revolution, with hardware now capable of sending multiple dimensions of finger movement control - not only from left or right, but also up, down, pressure, and beyond.
      BITWIG MPE CAPTURE AND EDIT
      The movements of each individual finger is effortlessly captured. In Bitwig Studio MPE is as easy to record as the two-dimensional movements of a standard MIDI keyboard. Furthermore, Bitwig Studio's unique modulation system allows you to easily assign any of these new controls to any parameter, of the built in Instruments and Effects, as well as third-party VST instruments.
      Many Bitwig Studio presets have been optimized for multidimensional control, resulting in a level of expression equivalent to playing acoustic instruments. Bitwig Studio is MPE ready, out of the box.

    NO option to save or export single MiDi file, NOT able to rename MiDi clip just to name a few (year 2019)
    Really basics of INCOMPETENCE ! ...unreal.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Export midi works for full project, it exports all tracks by default. If you want to export single track, just create an empty project and drag from your first project to the next project and select export midi from that new single track project. Easy!
      In 2019 I never work with midi file import/export. So exporting / importing midi is for me a very low priority feature. Good luck with whatever DAW you feel works best for your midi export/import missions.
      We all have different needs from a DAW, it's by no means incompetence.
