Now this is a conversation that a lot of worship leaders worship pastors and musicians are not ready to have because one thing about it is that unfortunately a large majority of churches have a loud secular or worldly music to enter into our worship services and we put a spin on it And add gospel lyrics and we believe that it’s OK to do because unfortunately we have seen bishops and other pastors who can sing very well you secular songs in church services and try to put a Holiness on it it’s a shame it’s a disrespect to a true and holy God we are supposed to worship in spirit and in truth.
I think in this case what you're saying doesn't apply cause the two songs just happen to have the same chord progressions and similar melodies. Things like this happen all the time in songwriting. It's not like Maverick City music went out of their way to listen to Marvin Gaye and try to remix it. It was a happenstance. nothing too deep. besides God doesn't care about all those little politics, he wants to see the heart. Maverick City music made for God a song out of love, praise, and worship. Let it be just that.

When that happens to me I just use it as a tool to help me memorize the song. The intro to Overcome by Elevation is just Teenage Wasteland by the Who and that's how I remember to start that song on bass. To me most worship songs can directly be related to classic rock or 80s hair metal ballads. When I work in a bass run straight off of a hair metal song I usually get compliments from the worship band about how good that sounded.
