MPC to Ableton // Our Process for finishing Beats
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лип 2024
- In this video I talk about how we take a beat from an MPC and finish it inside Ableton Live. When it comes to the workflow of writing beats, both Meems and I really enjoy the MPC platform. But when it comes to recording vocals and finishing tracks, Ableton is our current choice.

Thanks for watching 🙏
@Tefty You can easily map play start and so on by left clicking on play etc. in Ableton and map the midi by clicking on the related buttons on the MPC, it's pretty straight forward. I will switch from cubase, this is much better. It works immediate - gracias for the vid.
This really helps. I'm an old dude that got back into making music a couple of years ago. I started out with Cubase on the Atari ST and Amiga trackers many moons ago. Due to me working in IT all day, I really wanted to go DAWless and have done so up until this point. However I have been considering a MPC one as sampler/sequencer after watching many videos, mainly your own. I'm certainly not anti-DAW (use what is useful) and the workflow shown here definitely makes sense. Thanks, it's given me a lot to think about.
This was SUCH a valuable tutorial. I have pretty much the same setup plus an SP404 and I’ve started recording exactly like this. I just didn’t think to do the outs like that, but now I will. Thank you!!
For controlling ableton transport: when you're in controller mode (even as plugin) you will see you now have a new midi device, something like MPC One Public. This is the hardware, and you can map it's transport controls to ableton's transport controls.
This seems to be the expected use case from Akai - you can find a support page on it called "Akai Pro MPC Series | MPC Plugin Transport Setup in Studio One", I'd assumed it was an oversight and bought myself another midi controller to do the same thing! Ah well, hope this helps.
That was really useful, man! Actually I didn't expect it is possible to make multitrack recording from MPC in Ableton directly. You saved my life!
Thx for this, literally just switch to doing this on my own for the freedom of plugin use but you dropped a bunch of baller tips that will be really helpful
Super tutorial, thanks. The missing link to final production
Much appreciated.
thank you so much for this video!!!
Not sure if it’s been mentioned elsewhere but you can midi-map the mpc play and stop buttons to abletons play and start buttons to give you slightly better transport control
genius!!!!
honestly, i was searching for this solution yesterday, and today - totally unexpected - i was watching this video that helped me solving my yesterday´s problems...thx a lot
Glad I could help!
This is the way. I tell everyone this is the best way to track into the daw.. its really the only reason i use the software at all..
Omg thank you for the record/overdub to plugin. That was driving me nuts!
yeah I thought it was huge oversight before until I realized it was setting in the software. Seems like it should default to the plugin to avoid confusion.
Great, Thank U :)😀
Best video of the year for me. Just started 1.5 years ago with a MPC one and quickly added a midi keyboard, a Behringer Pro-1, Model D and more recently a Minifreak. I was so struggling finishing stuff and getting it to work all together. This workflow really speaks to me. Thanks for sharing! 👍👍
Nice setup! It took me a solid year or so before the MPC workflow really started clicking for me. I'm still learning techniques to this day because of how complex the system is.
Great Video! Thank you so much for this. Game changer! One question. When you have all your outputs routed and recorded then finished mixing, and want to add another track to be routed from the mpc. How do you record in the new track without the mpc squence playing at the same time? Hope the question makes sense
Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I've had the mpc live II for a couple of months and haven't found a comfortable workflow yet with Ableton...Currently, I have a template Ableton session setup and am at a standstill...I am now looking for a way to save a template of the modified mpc pad outputs, so the outputs remain the same no matter what program I load (3,4 | 5,6 | 6,7|, etc.)...Also, I noticed that when using MPC in controller mode with MPC software as a plugin in Ableton, I get no sound from the sampler or looper (even when "IN" is selected and the track record is armed). The sound comes through with issues in standalone mode or using in controller mode with MPC software...Just no sound from the sampler when using the software as a plugin from within Ableton. Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon!
You don't know how much i appreciate your help on this. Only thing is, my ableton doesn't recognize the mpc 2.0 as a vst. I tried reinstalling mpc 2.0 picked all the vst options but it still wont recognize the mpc.
I originally got the mpc x then also got the one plus to tey to fix the problem, but same thing.
Do you know how i can fix this?
Hello and thanks for the video. Everything works as you show us in this video, but how do I control and hear an exernal synth which is plugged into the MPC ? In standalone everything works nice, but when I switch the MPC to controller mode, the synth don't recieves any midi-signal AND I can't hear any sound even when I play it by hand. The synths audio is routed to MPCs Audio-In....
Greetings from Germany, Lars
tracking live!
Any help on downloading the network midi driver for mpc ?
Hi, have you experienced when using jura arpeggiator presets ,if you hold a note while recording a sequence, it doesn't stay recording the full notes, like sometimes it stops playing. so annoying....
Ok question...so i see you export it to audio file so at this point no more editing the midi....so you want to edit the midi all in mpc? I thought i could get a idea started and then take the midi and put it in to ableton to further edit but when I try I dont have the mpc sample sounds...how would I edit the samples as midi in ableton? or are you supposed to edit everything the way you want in mpc and then explode it and export the stems as audio into ableton? is that the only option? So you want to do the entire song in mpc and then finish in ableton as audio? I know you can export the midi from mpc but can you get the midi to have the sample sounds of mpc? or can you only do that inside the mpc? cheers
Is the buffer size causing too much latency to play along with as the mpc is recording? Thanks.
Tefty helping me out once again! I just upgraded to a Live 2, still have my One but i was wondering WTF was going on when I couldn't get the plugin controller mode to work. It's because I only had MPC ONE drivers installed. honestly my driver situation is insane right now because I use an M-AUDIO 8 in/out interface that was discontinued 10 years ago on Windows 8, so getting those drivers to work on my windows 11 laptop was a pain in the ass.
Wish I had a mac cuz i think it still works fine on there, either way it has messed with my audio drivers in general and cuts out all the time on output, and I can still only use 2 inputs at a time, I just can swap them in ableton. Once my ZZounds bill goes down a little, I am really considering the Model 12 once I build that Synth wall you linked me to.
Glad that tip helped! It's gotten me a few times over the years.
Seems helpful but does that mean that i have to recorde my snare in stereo mode in ableton?
Yop !
how do you get the drum track to be split per channel too?
Excelent video!
I just want to know if is necesary a audio interface for do this...
O I just need a MPC One and a computer?
Is because I don't know if buy a mpc one or digitakt (with overbridge)...
If you transfer the project over to your computer and load it up as a plugin MPC inside of Ableton, then you can just use the MPCs audio interface 👍
I like your videos and on Mac vs PC was very informative. Can you use this method with other DAWS?
As long as the DAW supports multiple audio outputs from the MPC Software plugin, which most modern DAWs do at this point, then yeah!
@@teftymusictech yea I have the MPC software but for some reason it won’t pull up when I try to use it as plugin on Mac Ventura in studio One 6.5. Thanks
Hmmm strange. Could be something with the AudioUnit/VST location and Studio One not finding it. if I was in your shoes the first thing I'd check is to see if Studio One is actually seeing a MPC plugin when it scans for plugins. It usually lists what has been scanned in the system. If you don't see it, then it's either looking in the wrong directory or the installation of the MPC Software didn't install the plugins. Good luck!
Hey Tefty! I have a question and i trust you to be honest. Love your content. Want to get the + but im worried about using big plugins like Fabric xl and running into ram issues. I wouldnt mind bouncing to wav but i don't wanna always have to do that because of the 2gb of ram
Thanks! So I'd say your concerns are warranted. The 2gb ram limit can be hit faster, but I'm *pretty sure* you'll be safe in loading a 2 or 3 big patches before any real memory issues. Of course if you have a ton of long samples in the memory already then that can effect it as well. One shots and short samples are no concern. But long several minute samples can eat up the RAM.
Also some patches take up more space like the strings and piano patches.
Why do you use the MPC! and do you think that standalone sound sifferent from controller mode!
So I have to download MPC Stupid and and Ableton for my MPC ONE to get mixed😮💨😮💨
so i love this method of recording arrangements, the only problem i’m having is that when i have the mpc in controller mode i lose the ability to use my midi keyboard which sucks because i usually want to record a solo line along with the arranging. i understand that the ins and outs on the mpc are disabled in controller mode, but it seems to treat the usb as any other usb hub. So my midi keyboard is detected by ableton in this case, but it doesn’t pass through to the mpc software leaving me unable to play an mpc program as a keys player which is a bummer. Do you by chance have any idea what I have to do to get past this?
Just go directly into your computer with the midi controller and solo on a separate track.
Solid workflow. I didn't quite have time to watch the whole video -- I'm assuming you saved the empty Ableton project (with routings) as a template? So you don't have to set it up with each project.
Correct!
Great video 👍. I've been exporting stems from my One into Reaper but I must give this a try.
Exporting stems from a Song can be tricky - need to be consistent with tracks and programs between sequences. I could see that potentially being an issue for this approach. Have you used multiple sequences or do you just put everything in one sequence?
Thanks Mick! Multiple sequences depends on the song for us. We've done it in the past, but for tracks like this we like to keep all the elements on one sequence and then use mutes to feel out an arrangement with vocals.
6:50
I just click on the export as audio in mpc software and drag and drop into my daw (ableton). Routing the outs from mpc software to ableton is a pain in the ass honestly I'd much rather just bring the tracks (per sequence unfortunately), and just take it from there
Producers watching other people make music is way better than kids watching other kids playing video games.
Fight me.
😂
How about exporting the project to Live file project and just load it in live? 🤔
Could definitely do it that way. What you'd lose out on is the live arrangement feel of the mutes. What we like about this method is you can be fairly fluid with the song arrangement (in a performance sense) right up until committing it to the arrangement timeline in Ableton (or whatever DAW you're using).
What are you using for your audio interface?
My main audio interface currently is a MOTU 828es with AVB 24ao
Hello! in the chapter "recording an arrangement" the mpc is in standalone or controller mode?
Not sure?
I responded to your other comment 👍
Just take the stems into abelton lol jesus
