I replaced my MPC Live 2 battery...
So my Akai MPC Live 2 battery died about a year ago. I decided to take the dive and replace the battery by myself. This is NOT intended to be instructional, it's more for observation/curiosity!

"2gb ram not enough" ...is it tho?
so is the mini brute just a scaled down version of this
Maybe this goes over my head but: does the interface also expand the midi of the Mpc with its in and output or doesn't it work that way? Also is there a switch for mono/stereo mode or is setting it up manually with a computer required?
BTW, The browse button which is the load button on the key 37
this is why I opted for One+ & external powerbank 😎
Wish Autosampling worked well with monophonic sounds. Legato and portamento don’t work as they should.
This is an idiotic design in this day and age. So many things to go wrong here. Scratch this one off my list.
I exchanged my sp 404 for a MPC one, I want to go back in time to kick myself in the nuts
🤨🤔 Great video! However, the release of MPC 3.0 kind of invalidates many of the points made here.
Forgive me but, the Model D sounds like hardware. And the plug in sounds like software.
What a rats nest.
Something seems to have changed in the beta. I can send midi notes to the audio track using my pads from the midi and submix tracks, but not the audio track.
Battery is expensive...
Does anyone know the newest MPC 3 update name without any bugs or issues before I go and do another one? Is this the most current one? Thanks ya'll 🌗
This is my concern with built-in batteries. Longevity is one issue but I've seen laptops broken open by the ultra-slo-mo explosion of their battery (thankfully that manufacturer replaced at no charge). I like the new Aira modules so it's a worry but allegedly the battery can be removed and just run off USB which will suffice. I expect my music gear to last decades, not years!
Oops! Sorry Tefty, UA-cam put a comment meant for another video here! Just in case you saw the notification before I deleted the comment.
😂😂😂😂+😮
Do you like your Live 2 or key 37 better?
So, how do your non-‘synfluencer’ viewers source a replacement battery … ??
why not route the different keyboards audio directly into the mpc?
I love my MPC Live 2❤
Thank you so much for this video! 😊 Watching you replace the internal battery of the MPC Live 2 on camera was incredibly helpful. Seeing the process from the perspective of someone doing it for the first time makes it so much more relatable and useful for others like me who are also trying it out. Thanks for sharing and putting in the effort to make this video-it’s greatly appreciated! 🙌
great video, thank you
the MPC may be a little chonky, but you can tell that this thing was designed to be user serviced. Every single part in the thing is available for purchase online at reasonable prices, and the construction is all very modular. they're designed like professional equipment
I replaced my PC Bios battery the other day Gonna do an upload of me replacing it if anyone intrested 🤔😂
Yes indeed. Anything related to MPC maintenance or any other piece of gear for that matter, I'm all for it. I also subscribed to your channel.
Wow. That’s harder than replacing a laptop battery. They should make batteries user replaceable as they do die eventually, but…dumb decision making/cost cutting.
Great , getting hands on ! 😎👍
You are Lucky ! My battery died, and the only way to have another one is to buy one (reconditioning) in MPC Stuff for 240$ !! It's impossible to have one brand new from akai ! They don't sell the battery appart. I live in europe, so my solution is to buy an old mpc live OG very used one but with a fonctional battery: 250€... Less than if I brought the used mpcstuff one from the US.. Thanks Akai..
250 euros is a real ripp off indeed..
@@ieyucel I agree but I need to use my mpc live anywhere... 250e is far too much :(
Nice one, I definitely added this video to my save list in case I need to change mine. For the inevitable occasional electronics repair job that comes with owning hardware, I recommend buying a soldering /electronics repair mat. They're very cheap (under $20) but are magnetic and do an excellent job remembering where each screw goes. I also always make a picture after each deconstruction and construction phase for reference, in case I get lost.
How did the Live 2's original battery die? Did it overheat? Just curious.
lithium ion batteries wear out over time and eventually die. This is the reason why I don't buy devices with lithium ion batteries since the life span of the device is tied to the battery. I would rather use dry cell rechargeables or wall powered devices.
@@syntheshwara I had no idea they wear out after a while, my Samsung phone battery wore out once and I had to get a whole new phone after that. Thank goodness I decided to go with the MPC One Plus instead.
@@TheOnlyJay_S. You can usually replace phone batteries. And some devices, like this MPC. Sourcing the correct battery for repairable devices can still be a bit of an issue. And some devices, you can’t open/service without partially destroying them. Good to think about when purchasing …
@@kierenmoore3236 I've tried replacing the phone's battery but it was just dead even if I tried to charge it with the new battery. I think using those cheap battery phone cases fried it.
You got lucky they sent me a charger chord and quit responding
Luck has nothing to do with it … Besides, there’s no such thing …
Yeah okay just was saying I'm not a content creator so it made me feel less as important as I bought mine like you and mine didn't even last a year no shade just commented doesn't stop me from the product just means I have to pay the $250
Interesting, thanks! I still have an Mpc mkI with the original battery which is still working fine. Probably because it's connected to the power brick most of the time. But someday we all would need to do this process 👍
I love my Microfreak. My first synthesizer, however, was the Yamaha PSS480 and I still think it's one of the best synthesizers you can buy as a first synth. It's got midi, it's 12 note polyphonic, fully mulitimbral, has drums and auto accompaniment. It has a very simple 5 track realtime sequencer. It is a 2 operator FM synth which allows you to edit most parameters on the front panel, and all parameters via sysex. You can make a full track only using the PSS480 and no other outboard equipment (I know I did during the late 80s and early 90s). I credit this synth for my enduring love of making my own synth music. I think I would have got bored with something less versatile. Unfortunately there isn't much available at the moment that can compete with its immediacy, sound, and versatility.
Disclaimer! This is not intended to be educational or instructional, it's purely for observation/curiosity! I didn't have a manual going into this, but I felt adventurous lol I was also very careful about static electricity (I have a lot of experience building custom PCs)
I recommend a headband magnifier for that kind of work. Also a screw sorting tray. It is also a good idea to snap pics with your phone at various points during disassembly.
For what it's worth, the giant section of knobs next to the OSC box DO NOT CHANGE function no matter what, it's only the OCS controls (4 faders 3 knobs) that change function besides the sequencer buttons
ok, now I want this synth!
Finally someone who mentione the latency issue. I sold the digi bcse of that. It was 32 ms on mine... and i am a key player so...
Still really bummed that they haven't fixed the AU plugin for Logic. Still can't use as a multi-output instrument :(
Do you have a link for the stool you showed?
Model D sounds much better than the Mini D. Took for ever to get the Mini D to sound good but then you swap to Model D and its like woah. Plugin synths suck.
Dude.. this is an amazing tutorial! I had no clue about the internal sampling. Thanks for sharing! Also, can you recommend a quality, affordable sustain pedal I can pick up for my MPC ? Thanks🤘🏼
I'm still learning how my mind and process works in the composing/producing process. As much as I love glitchy madness (IDM/breakcore/glitch-hop etc), which I think the Digitakt is great for, I really don't like programming my music. I personally don't like step sequencing as part of my writing process. At the end of the day, if I'm not playing my parts in real time I personally don't feel satisfied. The process of getting glitchy sounds with ratchets and stutters is part of my sound design process, but getting those sounds into a playable instrument that I can play real time and develop phrases, sections, etc. into a song is such a vital step for me. This has been a huge eye opener for me finding what works and I learned it by trying to do glitch/IDM in Ableton and realized I always ended up resampling and chopping to pads on Push 2 using Simpler or Drum Rack. This video verified to me that the Digitakt is something I would absolutely love to have, but it would not be my main standalone songwriting tool. Sometimes I have moments where I'm like, "damn did I get the wrong sampler?!" But it's starting to come together. I'm a weird person with a weird process haha.
Regarding the acb tech... going only on channel 1 - presumably you can record a perfrmance and then sample (record) it internally, or achieve the same thing with the MPC? A bit of a ball ache work around, but for those situations where you want several acb models or a v-piano running in a composition.... yea?
@teftymusictech Great video thanks. I love my Model D for bass but unfortunately mine has also corroded the same as yours. It ruined two good jack leads before I realised. Did you hear back from Behringer? Were they any help with the issue?
I used to live in Sacramento. Hung out with the Techno Truth gang for a while playing shows live as "Saturn Theory." Trance live act, fun times. Good channel, subbing.
Don't forget you have up 8 Mini D's on the MPC hardware mode or whatever the system can handle.
Yo Tefty so now with the release of MPC 3 and the ability to arrange within the MPC in stand-alone and also the ability to record more synths over the beat, do you think there’s still a reason to bring the mixdown into Ableton for completion?
Minifreak is amazing, -Fantastic sounds -Double voicing -Intuitive sequencer -The matrix/grid, for being able to see what is happening at a glance. -Mod sliders can be customized to any knob If you want your first synth to be future proof and have a wide application 💯 I don't think I agree that it's the best first synth since it's so advanced. 90% of it's functions will be above your ability/understanding if you are a novice. It wasn't my first synth, but it might end up being my last synth I buy because it can just do so much.
Thanks for this definitely now finna get this
Good to know about the latency, honestly. I don't think that would be a deal breaker for me, but it's good to consider going in. I've been wanting a Digitakt for like 2 years now. Just got the MPC and I'm gonna stay committed to it, but the desire to make glitchy/IDM madness on Digitakt is strong haha. Luckily they're like two different beasts so I'd love to have both. Thanks for the info, dawg.
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing. Not sure if anyone already mentioned it in the comments, so just thought I'd add. There's actually a workaround for the track limitations in Ableton. Within the Overbridge app, if you go to the Mixer tab, you can assign the tracks to specific outputs. It's a bit cumbersome, but what I do is record route track 16 to Output 1, Delay to Out 2, Reverb to Out 3, and Chorus to Out 4. I'll then record the first take of my song with tracks 1 to 15 on and track 16 and the effects muted. Then i'll do another take with the opposite. That enables you to capture all the tracks for your song. Don't know if that was confusing or not. LOL
