It all depends. Generally speaking ultrasound and MRI have been shown to be fairly comparable in their sensitivity and specificities for certain tendon tears. However there are some pros/cons for each modality. The main pro for ultrasound is that it is a dynamic study - so you can move the joint and see how the tendon responds.
