1997, by itself, was a pretty amazing year for video games... and the appearance of this list in Nintendo Power as it reached issue #100 was pretty neat. I love how you went through most of the games that had an impact on you. I sad-faced a little when you skipped the sports stuff (as that's my forte), but it was great to hear your takes on and memories of the other games. Final Fantasy IV was for me what Super Mario RPG was for you; it was my first RPG and the first game in its genre that I completed. It also turned me on to the Final Fantasy series on the whole; I went on to buy the next six Final Fantasy games on their respective launch dates. Conversely, I've always struggled with getting into Dragon Quest/Warrior... though DQVIII is sitting in my "to play" pile. This was a fun ride through nostalgia, and I enjoyed recalling a bunch of personal memories as the video went on. Thanks for putting it together.
Peter Skerritt [Try4ce] Dragon Quest VIII is the one that got me into the series. The first DQ isn't really my thing, and VII is the most tedious game of all time (well, maybe not, but close to it). All of the others come highly recommended by me, though!
Super Nintendo is still the height of my gaming experience. I don't know what it is exactly but I simply have amazing memories with that system, that no others have ever captured. Link to the Past, Super Castlevania and Super Mario World are 3 absolutely out of this world gaming experiences.
My heart almost exploded when you first breezed past NBA Jam. I sure hope you've come back to it in the last three years and at least given it a shot. It's more of an action game than a sports game.
[Try4ce] I did briefly play a bit of it. I'm not huge into competitive games though, so it didn't make an impression really. I understand and acknowledge the love it gets, though.
I am extremely disappointed in myself for lacking the forethought to keep all my old Nintendo Powers, systems, and other gaming memorabilia. I can only go through downloaded scans and emulators now.
I know it's all about tastes and such.. but I really feel bad when you disdain about fighting games in the list.. principally the Street Fighter series, almost at the point to make me want to argue. XP But regardless it's a great video; I love stuff like this. The channel is amazing! =D
TheFatestPat Because sports games was lit in their days. That & the rest of the games you mentioned are honestly, overglorified these days. That list has a global view of the industry, not a 2010s view of gaming as we see it.
I really don't get why people like the Megaman X series so much...I just recently got ROMs of Megaman 7 and Megaman & Bass (the other 2 SNES Megaman games besides X2 and X3) on my hacked SNES classic, and I enjoy them much more than X (which i'd also never played, until I got my SNES classic this last Christmas). That stupid wall jump...what, is Megaman suddenly Strider or Ninja Gaiden now? Stay in your lane, Megaman. I don't remember ever thinking while playing Megaman 1 or 2 (which I both owned, back in late 80s) 'these are really fun games, but what this really needs is a wall jump'...in fact, i'd probably prefer they never implemented the ground slide (again, is this Strider now?) or buster charge up either (it just seems like they changed up the game play for the sake of changing up the game play...not because it actually made the game play more fun and better). The Xs are ok games I guess, but I just like the original series more (2 is my favorite for sure)….less is more, kind of thing.
Gosh! You guys deserve so much more subs! I have been hooked on this channel for months now! Thanks to you guys I dropped who knows how much on building a framemeister, rgb modded snes mini setup, and a ton of games to build up my collection once again. Keep it up!
Best Bomberman single player is Jetters on the Gamecube tbh. Hero on 64 comes close, but the very loosely anime-inspired Gamecube one is a total hidden gem. Doesn't overstay its welcome.
Honestly I love Pilotwings Resort, and a big part of that is the setting! I love that island, it’s been one of my favourite settings for any game ever since WiiFit and one of my favourite games of all time Wii Sports Resort!
Wow skipping over Street fighter 2 at number 10, I'm guessing Try wasn't able to frequent arcades when this came out. Out of all the arcade games and home systems that I played over the years from the early 80's (Atari 2600) onwards SF2 was THE phenomenon I was glad I lived to witness.
MANIAC MANSION on NES is one of my favorites of all time. The game itself has a great history from its PC and Commadore days to finally being ported to NES. Which had limitations compared to let's say the Windows version, but it was so amazing it's on NES. It is both scary and funny at times. One the best games ever made
I was subscribed to Nintendo Power. I remember reminding my mother to cut a check for the subscription, filling it out and then mailing it in. During the late 90's, while moving into a new home, most of my retro games and entire magazine collection were lost. I was lucky enough to find someone selling their 1-100 collection, minus a few that were missing for a very cheap. It's honestly my best purchase as far as retro collecting goes.
Also, absolutely right-on about Link's Awakening. I think what made you feel more connected to the world is that many of the people you meet, you later meet again and have to help as part of your main critical path in the game, so built up the world by getting you involved in their lives and rather than being some optional side quest. Also there was the persistent existential question/concern throughout the game, raised directly or indirectly by many people in the world, even the bosses, about whether they'd all disappear if the Windfish woke up.
Could you have had the other guy say something about games other than RPG's?!!!!! I respect your taste, but you just breeze over all fighting games.... those were kinda a big deal back than. You say Mortal Kombat is, "just another fighting game" but that was a game that had influence outside of just the gaming world.
The release of Mortal Kombat II was fucking legendary. Unheard of level of violence for Nintendo back then, and we loved every second of it. If you didn't 'Fatality' you didn't truly win with style.
Excellent video! Very well done and very genuine. I recently discovered your channel and have found all the videos to share these same qualities. Ive really enjoyed it and foresee this channel growing into something really special. Keep up the good work!!
I actually bailed on my subscription sometime in 1995 or 1996. I had been a loyal subscriber since Mega Man 2 issue from 1989 (the debut issue of NP in Canada) but after seeing how most IPs were moving to the Playstation I cancelled. I did however restart during the Gamecube years and early on into the Wii but again stopped. NP was the single most exciting thing I looked forward to every month for the majority of my early teen years and I still have every issue Ive ever had from those days.
Even at age 37, where I thought myself above such things, I have to admit I drew in a disapproving sigh on your initial Final Fantasy commentary. However, primitive knee-jerk reactions aside, this was a really fun trip through the list and your own personal feelings on them. It's eye-opening and refreshing to take on a new perspective, and in the end, I think I will take a look at some "top 100s" myself and see what all the fuss is about.
Brings back memories of friends passing this issue from person to person. Agree about waverace, amazing control and the overall physics...SM64s use of momentum and control was lost on Mario games post sunshine. The n64 stick allowed you perfect control of Mario in anyway you see fit and just freelancing and soaring through the sky with the wing cap was an experience in of itself. I was hoping for this level of control in Odyssey but it’s as if Mario has aged like I have and he’s running through mud nowadays...Bring back the 64 magic.
This was a fantastic video, I can't say enough good things about it. Thanks for your hard work & for sharing this. I still have this issue of Nintendo Power. While I never agreed with their Top 100 list (even back when it first came out), it's still one of my favorite issues of all-time.
lol, I actually remember this issue and I even think I have it in my attic somewhere. Nintendo Power was the ultimate guide to Nintendo back in middle school. And yes, Goldeneye definitely deserves its spot; it was the most played multiplayer game and was a huge part of my childhood, even more than Mario Kart. A friend from back then borrowed and never returned it though, so I don't have it anymore. It hasn't aged well tbh, but is still an iconic game.
I had Flashback on my father's old "PowerMac" in the later 90's. I thought that game was a ton of fun, but honestly, I couldn't stand playing it with a controller on console. Man.... "Mac"... back then, the Mac's used proprietary parts, rather than just average PC parts, unlike today, and that thing was a beast of a machine compared to all of my friend's PC'c at the time. We primarily used it for music recording, but it tore it up with gaming titles like Marathon 2, Marathon Plus, Full Throttle, Tie-Fighter, and so many more... it ran everything you could throw at it back then at max settings, and looked beautiful for the time. Oh, how the mighty have fallen, lol.... Well, at least as gaming goes... Bungie's time making games for Macintosh was great back then.... time goes on...
I think I still have this issue, somewhere in my pile of old Nintendo Powers and old Gamepro magazines. I think I'll be doing some rummaging after this.
Illusion of Gaia is a superb game, up there in the Squaresoft library, the scenarios around the world, the smooth gameplay, the graphics and the heartwarming story make for a great experience. It's fallen under the shadow of Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, but it deserves a place up there, just not as long because it's actually an action adventure game and not really a RPG.
I remember when you beat Battletoads. I thought "If Try can beat Battletoads, I can beat Battletoads!" That, and watching you clear out your backlog convinced me that I could beat any game I set my mind on, and it's been some good inspiration to get me through a lot of hard games since.
[Try4ce] No Kirby game is on the list AT ALL, which in my opinion is a complete travesty. In 1997, Kirby Super Star would've probably been in the top 5 for me.
I remember playing through Goonies II in 1988. I had the benefit of the black Nintendo Player's Guide, so completing the game just took me an evening. However, I felt it was a top-notch Nintendo game that shouldn't be missed for NES gaming.
Tetrisphere is my number one puzzle game of all time. The Tetris element is really slapped on and its like playing a interactive toddlers shape matching ball. I guess if you are really into electronic synth it helps. This game has rare CD quality audio when played through a real amp and good speakers. Great video and great list I would love to see more Nintendo Power magazine videos and some us never got to read them in different countries.
I really enjoyed this. While I didn't use this specific top 100 list as a resource for digging deeper into older games, I definitely had a point where I used a few top-whatever lists from sources in gaming magazines/the internet that I used. Apparently this top 100 list was a big deal for a lot of people too, though, because it was a Nintendo Power tradition (I'm a bit disappointed you didn't mention this). In their 200th issue they did a top 200 games list, and in their last issue, 285, they did a top 285 games list, saying they would have done 300 if they got that far but they didn't. Also, as for the best Bomberman, most people are probably going to recommend you the Saturn and N64 games. Those aren't bad picks, the Saturn game is good but most notable for it's multiplayer. I don't really care for the N64 games from what I played a long time ago, but from what I understand they do have quite a bit in the way of content. What I'd like to recommend is a gem for the GBA called Bomberman Tournament. It's basically a Zelda-like with Bomberman mechanics. Totally solid, and I honestly liked it more than some of the lower-tier Zelda games if nothing else. There's also a really fleshed-out Pokemon-inspired minigame that's a ton of fun. From what I understand it was likely actually influenced by the Neutopia games since it's by the same developer.
GamerJM0 [Try4ce] Yeah, I was aware of the 200th issue list, but unfortunately I wasn't a subscriber anymore. At the time, it seemed to make sense, I mean, I was hardly reading it anymore because I already knew everything in it through the Internet. But now that NP is gone... I wish I had all those issues.
I respected this channel because of you guys's great taste and respect for lesser known retro games. That said, this guy seems to be the least qualified of the bunch for this video. Beat 'em up isn't my thing, what's a Gradius, it goes on and on.. like really dude? The whole "I'm just getting into it" stopped being cute after a few games - what do you want? A a participation trophy? Bring someone else to do this what the hell man. This might be sensational for some trolls but I find it insulting to the rest of us. This is about as insightful as pop music blogger reviewing an opera.
[Try4ce] I just didn't want to linger too long on games that I didn't have much insight on. The video was more than long enough as it was. I think you misinterpreted the tone and intent here. I didn't mean to disrespect any games or genres (well, I'll admit I'm hard on sports), but it's not like every game is for everyone. I never meant to imply that I didn't have a passing curiosity about Final Fight or respect for Gradius (you may have not noticed, but the "uh what" about Gradius III was referring to a misprint in the magazine itself). Since this video, I clicked pretty good with Streets of Rage 1 and 2. Still pretty intimidated by shmups, but I never said they didn't interest me. Sometimes it just takes the right game. I didn't like RPGs at the time Nintendo Power released this issue, but a couple years later I was way into them. I'm always interested in expanding my horizons and finding interesting things to like about all sorts of games, but it's not like I can promise I'll be into everything.
I have a similar Metroid story about Metroid 2. I didn't like the first game much but Nintendo Power convinced me to try the second one on Game Boy. Plus I was looking for good games to play on it. The first time I played it I was pretty lost. I wandered aimlessly for a while and kind of gave up. But then later on I decided to try again and forced myself to progress. When I did I was very happy because it turned out to be a great game that I still play through to this day. I know a lot of people don't like it but I really think it holds up quite well apart from not having a map. You really should play with a map you find online or something but if you do that it's awesome. It's a great experience for a 2D Metroid fan.
4:42 Lufia and the Fortress of Doom - It's indeed a game that's played best when you first play the SNES sequel, which is one of my favorites RPGs of all time,, but I wish the gameplay and AI wasn't from the NES era. 5:32 Blackthorne - great Flashback or Prince of Persia-with-metal-and-guns-like game by Blizzard Entertainment, one of the better of their SNES games. 5:47 Illusion of Gaia - pretty good and chill action RPG, it's the second of the trilogy of Quintet's RPGs, the first being Soul Blazer, and the last Terranigma. They're a must if you are into JRPG archeology. 7: 28 The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse - Disney's Magical Quest series on SNES games are amazing, great controls, really fun. 9:33 Killer Instinct: One of the best fighting games of it's time. Orchid really had some 12yo boys thinking about her at the time. 14:53 Tetrisphere - Pretty good and unique Tetris game. Yes, the gameplay is good and the music is awesome, if you're into IDM genre (intelligent dance music) 17:25 Simcity for SNES - I believe it is one of the best Simcity versions and one of my favorites overall. Simple, chill, not overloaded with tons of things like its sequels, and fun. 21:24 Super Bomberman 2 - The multiplayer (and the single player) is really great with the right people and mood. Go for it. 24:16 Tetris Attack - Another great game with even better super-competitive multiplayer. Pulling combos after combos feel amazing.
I remember getting pretty darn addicted to the gameboy Bomberman's campaign in the early oughts. I don't... recall that it was *fun* exactly, but I couldn't put it down either. Maybe a good starting point?
I don't even know why Mario 64 is even on the list. Then when I looked at it, it's Nintendo Power's Top 100 for 1997's list. So I calling those 12 voters Bias.
I cringe everytime he dismisses any sports games "But theres so many other games I could be playing" Really dude, 1 game of nba jam takes like maybe 10 minutes at most, that's why people like sports games because you don't have to dedicate much time into them and just play 1 games and NBA Jam is one of the most fun games still to this day.
Eddie Jacobs don't you know it's impossible for anyone who is athletic to enjoy games as well. sports games don't sell, that's why they don't make them anymore. the puzzle game is king. in the wasteland they call it "puzzliene"
This was an ambitious video. Absolutely loved it. Well done, detailed and of course, nostalgic. On a side note, I was reading through one of my Nintendo Power's the other day and came across an article entitled "Inside the NES". They mention RF vs. RGB. I thought it was interesting and reminded me of your RGB series. In any case, check out page 62 of Volume 22 for some RGB kicks. Cheers.
Hilarious video! You definitely got the "cliche nerd" character down pat! The haircut, the clothes, and the way you articulate words is spot on! Keep up the great content!
Back viewing this a second time after quite awhile. Since then, I got a PVM (having learned about them from your channel) which is where I do all my retro gaming. It is REALLY hard to unsee the lack of scanlines from your footage. Everything looks wrong to my eyes now.
[Try4ce] Scanlines aren't a good fit for online video sadly. Depending on how someone views it, they will look uneven, not to mention they wreak havoc on video compression.
@@mylifeingaming Oh sure. I more just meant how different it feels to watch after getting used to a PVM. Especially characters with few fine details. The beginning and ending of LoLo might as well be a game from a different system entirely the visuals are so different with and without scanlines.
You should definitely give Ultima: Quest of the Avatar a try sometime -- I'll tell you right now, the combat is rather slow and boring, but the game did SO MUCH that was SO UNIQUE, it really stands out as one of the most ambitious RPGs of its era, and is still pretty unique and forward-thinking to this day. No other RPG has made me think about my actions so deeply before or since -- I've never really thought twice about taking items from treasure chests in people's houses, or running from battle, in other RPGs, but you absolutely HAVE to think about little details like that in Quest of the Avatar. It's wrong to steal, after all, and it's also cowardly to run from a fight (or to kill an enemy who's trying to run from you). I'm glad to see it was acknowledged by Nintendo Power's editors back then, as it very much deserved it. As did Goonies II, though I wish that game were higher on the list -- to this day, Goonies II remains one of my favorite NES games of all time (along with another underdog, Solstice), and is one of the games I've replayed more than any other (again, along with Solstice). I highly recommend giving it a try for yourself sometime -- it's a lot more fun than you might think!
It is interesting how far apart we are here, Try4ce. There would be no space for a Donkey Kong Country game on a list like this for me. On the other hand, Illusion of Gaia is, in my opinion, one of the best games on the SNES. Moreover, I think F-Zero is one of the best racing games ever (I would trade all the Mario Kart games of the future fora new F-Zero in the style of the first). I also never loved Mario 64 (even as a child I wasn't satisfied with the new version of Mario). That being said, we at least both love Chrono Trigger. We will always have Chrono Trigger...
I remember getting this issue and flipping to see what #1 was. At the time, I agreed with Super Mario 64. Now, I'm not even sure it would make the top 30.
Ultima: Quest for the Avatar is one of the best games ever and I think the NES version is the most accessible. You don't have to key in commands like in the older Ultima titles on computers, it plays more like Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy but with other mechanics from the original Ultima IV.
Cause most of the time you need to at least have a passing interest in the sport to want to bother. Also the whole nerd vs jock mentality that used to be more prevalent. Nevertheless, one of my favorite childhood games ended up being Fifa 98. But even then I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it if I didn't play games with my brother all the time. Sports games by yourself = boring.
The feeling you had with A Link To The Past when NP's final issue had the top 285 games, and had OOT at number 1. To this day, I'm still not much of a Zelda fan
+Corey Cavalier [Try4ce] Demon's Crest is a great game! I also highly recommend the first game in the series, Gargoyle's Quest for the Game Boy. I have Gargoyle's Quest II (NES), but I haven't had a chance to play through it yet.
The fighters you seem to strongly dislike were some of my favorites in the 80’s and 90’s. Mostly because it was easy to play with friends. I game solo mostly in the last 10 years or so now, so I don’t enjoy them like I used to I must admit. I didn’t really like Mario 64... Golden Eye was Dope... Mario 1 and 3 are still a couple of favorites of mine, as well as super Mario world. World was the first SNES game I played. I played it at a friend’s house. LOVED that game for the longest time. FZero was a staple in my rotation...original Metroid... an all timer for me... by the time 64 came out, I was in high school and I had moved on to the more “Adult” PlayStation. Seemed like the logical choice for my generation. The grade schoolers and jr high kids stayed on Nintendo’s side. I got the PlayStation for Madden, Tomb Raider and Final fantasy games. I never got into Zelda, so I can’t really comment on those games. I remember reading this list though, and wishing there were a couple of other games on it.
[Try4ce] I wouldn't say strongly dislike, but I don't have a particularly competitive nature, and have always had more fun with co-op multiplayer. I've always enjoyed Mario Kart, but in other competitive games I've always preferred playing on teams.
Illusion of Gaia has a very weird story and solid gameplay with amazing music. That being said, the third title, Terranigma, is one of the best games ever created. Edit: Star tropics is my favorite NES game, so we will have to agree to disagree lol.
About had a fit when you glanced over NBA Jam but I'm glad you rescinded yourself Try4ce, although it's amazing how much 4 years can impact everything. Link's awakening being the best GB game ever? HD remake on the way. Mario 64 being best openworld Mario game? Odyssey comes and gives you all the momentum you can muster with beautiful music and graphics to boot.
Nice list, Shadowrun is a cyberpunk RPG, I suggest the old PC version or the new remake if you want to try it out, but if you have to play it on console go for the SNES one, the one on the Genesis/Megadrive is not really good imo. Btw all version are totally different from one another, different story and gameplay, I'm not sure but I think they are based on an actual table RPG. As for Bomberman if you want to try out one that has good single player go for any on the SNES or N64, they are all pretty good with story, boss battles and everything.
I've always thought the Top 2 needed to be flipped. imo. Odyssey is actually really good and in my opinion the Closest to Standing up to the gameplay of SM64.
I mostly agree with on all these games but I was hooked on RPG's after renting FFIV Breath of Fire 2 at blockbuster. I'm surprised that you don't like fighting games with Toys R us SNES demo with SF2 was always filled people playing. The 90's was a rise of fighting games on every system.
Try pocket bomberman for the gbc. Its more of a sidescrolling bomberman single player puzzle platformer. It held my attention for much longer on the boring road trips. Great music, too.
Like most game magazine top 100s this one is extremely random! But the Top 20 seems fairly accurate. No Super Star Wars games though...or freaking NES Ducktales or Castlevania III
10:35 !? WHATCHU MEAN "HUH" !? That's WAYNE GRETZKY'S 3D HOCKEY !!! With turbo avail , hold A , Down C , release and go to town on everything .. IT'S SO BRUTALLY FUN that I dub it NHL Blitz

The handwave dismissal of fighting games hurts my soul.
Jason Katz I love the way he just skips over some of them, it’s comedy gold omg.

The killer instinct part hurted my soul.
Vs fighting game is the rolls royce of mutli player game indeed.some compares to chessmaster
I'm with Try on this one.
I really apreciate that final thought at the end. There is always something to learn if you just open your mind to new possibilities.
i love how this guy is honest about ppl favorite Nintendo games
Gotta enjoy all the grumbles or moans for sports and fighting games :)
Blinkloggery Well The Sports games anyway. I’m sure there are more moans and grumbles about shooters now than for fighting games these days.
Golf is higher than Megaman X, Earthbound and TMNT in Time. Great list there, Nintendo Power.
TheFatestPat Because sports games was lit in their days.

@@rayminishi689 Golf is a terrible game though. Not as good as those other games, that's for sure.
Everything in context lol
I paid 18$ bucks for demons crest. At the time I hated myself for paying sucker prices for it. Little did I know.
I love this channel.
Also, the way you talk / your english pronunciation makes it very easy for me to understand everything you say.
If you haven't given the NES version of Metal Gear another shot, you should. The deeper you go, the more it grows on you. It's a great game imho.
Gosh! You guys deserve so much more subs! I have been hooked on this channel for months now! Thanks to you guys I dropped who knows how much on building a framemeister, rgb modded snes mini setup, and a ton of games to build up my collection once again. Keep it up!

I spent far more time just cruising around the maps in Pilotwings 64 than I did actually playing the courses.
Great job on the video, really enjoyed the list. Going to have to try some one of the one's I never played before.
Best Bomberman game for a single player game is Saturn Bomberman for the Sega Saturn.
The overworld is fun, but the best part of Actraiser is definitely the action-platforming stages.
They put DKC3 above DKC2 and DKC1?? WHY!? DKC2 is the best in the series, and DKC1 comes at a close second.
dkc3 is better than the first fucking fite me
Even at age 37, where I thought myself above such things, I have to admit I drew in a disapproving sigh on your initial Final Fantasy commentary. However, primitive knee-jerk reactions aside, this was a really fun trip through the list and your own personal feelings on them. It's eye-opening and refreshing to take on a new perspective, and in the end, I think I will take a look at some "top 100s" myself and see what all the fuss is about.
Loved goonies 2. It seems as though I'm one of the only ones.
Magical Quest is a great game; a real SNES platformer gem. The only downside is it doesn't have a save system, so it's all or nothing in one sitting.
i appreciate the effort you guys put into the visuals in these vids
Every time you cut to that wood panel room with an NES set up on an old TV, I wanna recreate that room in my own home.
Wow.. coincidentally I was playing SM64 while watching this.
Pilotwings 64 was just "plane" relaxing --- good pun sir
Roger Olsen [Try4ce] I wish I'd actually realized that was a pun when I wrote it! Good catch! Ha!
Very nostalgic video for me! I had this issue and reread it so many times! Enjoyed hearing your opinions, even when I didn’t agree!
This was a fantastic video, I can't say enough good things about it. Thanks for your hard work & for sharing this.
I still have this issue of Nintendo Power. While I never agreed with their Top 100 list (even back when it first came out), it's still one of my favorite issues of all-time.
"I never played this game", "I hate this game", "skip", "I started this game and got bored"
Apparently the best Bomberman is Saturn Bomberman, so I hear.
lol, I actually remember this issue and I even think I have it in my attic somewhere.
I love how he didn’t even describe Golf. 14:50
I still have this magazine and I was thinking of going thought this list too
Illusion of Gaia is a superb game, up there in the Squaresoft library, the scenarios around the world, the smooth gameplay, the graphics and the heartwarming story make for a great experience. It's fallen under the shadow of Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, but it deserves a place up there, just not as long because it's actually an action adventure game and not really a RPG.
I'd say the best Bomberman single-player experience is Bomberman 64. Such a great challenge to find all 120 gold cards.
I remember when you beat Battletoads. I thought "If Try can beat Battletoads, I can beat Battletoads!" That, and watching you clear out your backlog convinced me that I could beat any game I set my mind on, and it's been some good inspiration to get me through a lot of hard games since.
[Try4ce] I always thought you were way better at the tougher games!
Loved the reactions to the sports games
Was Kirby's Adventure for NES on this list? If not, why not??
[Try4ce] No Kirby game is on the list AT ALL, which in my opinion is a complete travesty. In 1997, Kirby Super Star would've probably been in the top 5 for me.
probably the most glaring omission
Does Megaman X have the Gradius III description? ;)
I remember playing through Goonies II in 1988. I had the benefit of the black Nintendo Player's Guide, so completing the game just took me an evening. However, I felt it was a top-notch Nintendo game that shouldn't be missed for NES gaming.
KarbuncleX [Try4ce] I also see Goonies 1 often in Famicom bargain bins...
[Try4ce] At the time, I haaated the music. I'm much more open minded about that sort of thing now though.
I loved this issue. Got it at Best Buy because it had WCW vs nWo - World Tour in it.
About 6 years ago I found online a new in box copy of Demon Crest (SFC version) for 60bucks. Man, the prices has sure gone up.
7: 28 The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse -
Disney's Magical Quest series on SNES games are amazing, great controls, really fun.
9:33 Killer Instinct: One of the best fighting games of it's time. Orchid really had some 12yo boys thinking about her at the time.
14:53 Tetrisphere - Pretty good and unique Tetris game. Yes, the gameplay is good and the music is awesome, if you're into IDM genre (intelligent dance music)
17:25 Simcity for SNES - I believe it is one of the best Simcity versions and one of my favorites overall.
Bust-a-move is a fantastic series of games! Definitely recommended. its called Puzzle Bobble in some territories, and Puzzle-de-Pon somewhere too
not surprised that superman 64 isnt on there
lol
This came out in 97, Superman64 came out in 99.
I don't think if it were released in 97 it would be there either
I remember getting pretty darn addicted to the gameboy Bomberman's campaign in the early oughts. I don't... recall that it was *fun* exactly, but I couldn't put it down either. Maybe a good starting point?
I don't even know why Mario 64 is even on the list. Then when I looked at it, it's Nintendo Power's Top 100 for 1997's list. So I calling those 12 voters Bias.
Mario 64 is easily still a top 25 game
I cringe everytime he dismisses any sports games "But theres so many other games I could be playing" Really dude, 1 game of nba jam takes like maybe 10 minutes at most, that's why people like sports games because you don't have to dedicate much time into them and just play 1 games and NBA Jam is one of the most fun games still to this day.
Okay, but is the story any good?
Eddie Jacobs don't you know it's impossible for anyone who is athletic to enjoy games as well. sports games don't sell, that's why they don't make them anymore. the puzzle game is king. in the wasteland they call it "puzzliene"
NBA jam wasnt really a sports game like the ea shit. Its arcadey and easy for anyone to pick up.
Mist Sonata ever play puzzle games without a story?
10:35
Your videos are like being transported to the 1990s. Thank you, keep it up! Liked AND Subscribed!!!
What’s the amazing music at 6:48? It’s SO GOOD AND I NEED THE NAME
SimCity SNES is brilliant! I own a copy. In fact I’m playing it right now. I have to recommend the PAL version as the colours look better however.
Cheers.
DavetheNESGuy [Try4ce] I just took a look, and that's super cool! Really neat to see that kind of article in Nintendo Power.
Really neat, but also strange, like they knew what RGB was, just couldn't do it with the NES for some reason. Neat stuff indeed.
Hilarious video! You definitely got the "cliche nerd" character down pat! The haircut, the clothes, and the way you articulate words is spot on! Keep up the great content!
You have it all wrong. He IS the nerd that cliche nerds look like. OG nerd to the core.
Dude, go play Illusion of Gaia. Now. Stop what you're doing. Why are you still reading this. GO.
Send me a copy
I had this issue, brought back many good memories :) thanks
That last little tidbit is something to go by. Thanks.
The original F-Zero remains one of my all-time favorites. I prefer it over all the later generation console versions.
I was waiting to see if you were gonna diss Blaster Master. I'm glad I didn't have to say bad things.
What’s the song at 8:45!? It’s amazing, and I’ve been looking for years!
[Try4ce] This was back from a time when we were using royalty free music. It's not game music. I don't know what it is called.
I remember getting this issue and flipping to see what #1 was. At the time, I agreed with Super Mario 64. Now, I'm not even sure it would make the top 30.
One thing I liked about this list was how Try4ce acted *exactly* to how I would have to plain ol' sports games.
Try4ce looks like a real life caricature.
Ultima: Quest for the Avatar is one of the best games ever and I think the NES version is the most accessible. You don't have to key in commands like in the older Ultima titles on computers, it plays more like Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy but with other mechanics from the original Ultima IV.
As always awesome work!!
I don't understand all the hatred for sports games, especially in the retro gaming community
18:09
Hey!
I see what you did there.
The feeling you had with A Link To The Past when NP's final issue had the top 285 games, and had OOT at number 1. To this day, I'm still not much of a Zelda fan
you deserve so much more viewers and subbs.
Nice videos!
Game Sack brought me here .
greetings from germany
Silvester2K [Try4ce] Thanks! We're glad that the panel video turned out so well! Joe did a great job of editing it.
Been watching MLIG clips all evening while I garrison farm on Wow. Thanks for showing Dragon Crest (SNES) going to give that a try.
+Corey Cavalier [Try4ce] Demon's Crest is a great game! I also highly recommend the first game in the series, Gargoyle's Quest for the Game Boy. I have Gargoyle's Quest II (NES), but I haven't had a chance to play through it yet.
I like how nintendo just ignored that there were other consoles and games out there.
@fripp555 dang, I'm sorry to hear that. Truly.
There is a Bomberman platformer on the GBC called Pocket Bomberman, it's fun.
Great music, too.
oh my, i remember getting that issue... One of the first issue i got after subscription... I subscirbed on issue... 90 maybe?
Like most game magazine top 100s this one is extremely random!
But the Top 20 seems fairly accurate.
No Super Star Wars games though...or freaking NES Ducktales or Castlevania III
10:35 !? WHATCHU MEAN "HUH" !? That's WAYNE GRETZKY'S 3D HOCKEY !!!
With turbo avail , hold A , Down C , release and go to town on everything .. IT'S SO BRUTALLY FUN that I dub it NHL Blitz
+D00MEDST [Coury] Try might not have any interest in it, but this comment just sold me on the game.
