Was there at the closing down ceremony attended by Lord Mountbatten , spent the day with one of the last entrants called Roy O'Connell who eventually went on submarines , the final mast climb & fireworks display was brilliant ,a sad day for all the bell bottom boys who'd passed through & Shotley's not been the same since the navy left!
I joined Ganges November 14th 1966 , 69rec. Moved to main establishment January 67 ,40mess Duncan Division. Won my boxing colours and was standby button boy. Only went to the button once but that apparently was enough, Would do some of the snowflakes a world of good if there were something similar available for them in todays world, Learnt the greatest lesson life can teach you. Rely on yourself to be able to work as part of a team.
1971 Rodney division 44 mess beside Fisks studio and the cookery school. I was a badge boy and the drum major. Best year of my life for setting the tone and values.
When I was there the white building to the right of the mast was Drake 40. There was a folk tale that someone fell from the button and went through the roof and his ghost haunted the building, but I never saw any ghost in my time in the mess! :)
I left in November 71 as a JMEM and joined the Ulster by myself. Actually liked Ganges and the Ulster was brilliant as well. I know for certain quite a lot of lads hated Ganges, there was bullying but mostly from other boys that I saw.
