    Hi everyone. Thank you all for your views and your comments. I've got a number of comments on the volume of the music. I really appreciate everybody's feedback on this, and will be making changes in future videos. Check them out and let me know if I did any better. Cheers!
    Edit: To everyone who is asking for the music to be removed. I would if I could. As it stands I would have to reupload the video to do that, which is not an option right now. I do have a second aluminum air battery video already up with no music, and it features a better battery. Why that one is not more popular than this one is beyond me.       It's nice to have some music, but I would reduce the volume signifigantly, and only play it for the introduction, and towards the end of each section. The audio recording quality and production quality was good. Good luck with your channel!

      @@GDMHificationranpitc glad you liked it. I have read some papers talking about gel electrolytes, but I have not had any success of my own. It is something I'm looking into currently. If I find anything I'll be sure to make a video out of it. Cheers!

I wouldn't say I liked the video it was aiggght... I think you could do better. Maybe by adding some eye candy babes to the video... the UA-cam thirst is real #nolust.

      Mechanic Gone Rogue there’s a free ware call “levelator” or “levelater”.
      It balance your high & low. (not related to your current issues of music competing with your important info or bad echo or placement of mic).

      I totally agree, I don't understand why DIY UA-camrs think music is necessary for instructional videos over vocals. Music usually ruins the video because it's too loud or a terrible choice.
      $5 eBay lapel mics, old Android phones and the ASR audio app are a fantastic solution for low budget sound.

    Making use of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type

    Hey mate, excellent video but a bit improvement would be no music and a nice MIC. You can get little shotgun mics that plug right into your phone or gopro or whatever

      I think more people should be doing this sort of stuff at home. Now how do we increase the amperage? Imagine being able to recharge your cell phone by pouring some salt water into a canteen.

    excellent video. something to point out with this, if you were to charge this battery it will produce chlorine, hydrogen, and oxygen gas. you might want to replace the electrolyte with sodium/potassium bicarbonate, sodium/potassium carbonate, or sodium/potassium hydroxide to avoid producing chlorine.

    Cool, thanks for sharing. An inventor here in the UK developerd a more efficient version but the gov wouldn't fund it. I think he had problems getting rid of the powder that builds up, which is re-useable of course.

    Thanks for the lesson. I just learned something today that I often wonder about. Now I got questions about it, like how long do they last per use. Life expectancy. Recharge time. Up scaling. Down scaling. Actual applications for them. Questions off the top of my head about them air batteries.

      Glad you enjoyed my video. To answer your questions. They last about 1 day before the water evaporates. I havent tried recharging them, and scalability wouldn't really work with this design. Its more of a one time use proof of concept. As for real world use Ive read the U.S military has used these for years in remote observation stations (dont know how reliable that info is) and India is trying to make a version for electric vehicles.     No complaints, this is brilliant. Would it be possible to charge a phone. USB is 5v. So maybe. That would be so cool. I can re-examine my fantasy about going back in time and bringing my iPad. Probably end the world sooner.

      no. its short circuit current was 3 milli amps. Maybe this thing could deliver 2 milli amps at 5v. A phone battery capacity is 3000 milli amps at 3.7v. It would take 1500 hours to fully charge the phone but im pretty sure this diy battery would be empty after a few minutes XD

    Interesting... Basic batter using salt water. If you used vinegar maybe it would make more miliamps. This is like a battery that would be made in a chemistry or physics class for study purposes.
    Normally you would never connect an amp meter directly across the power source. If you did this with a regular battery you could damage the meter. Current should always be checked through (in series) a resistance load. The way current of a battery is checked is to put a resistance load and measure the rate of voltage drop across the battery. Then the internal resistance of the battery can be calculated. By timing the rate of discharge over time the Amp hours can be worked out.

      Good suggestion. I have tried it previously but I didn't have any luck with vinegar. Lately I have been playing around with the electrolyte composition. I want to move away from water based electrolytes so that the battery is not dependent on water constantly being added due to evaporation. I'm hoping to make a video on it in the future.

      @@MechanicGoneRogue For a non aqueous based electrolyte, you can use urea and choline chloride to create a deep eutectic solvent. It's completely harmless, but smells a bit fishy. You'll push the potential per cell up to ~1V and it never dries out.

    Nice! I love your approach, cool to encourage amateur battery experimentation. I would try graphite spray lube for the carbon source as well. Thanks for sharing.

      So glad you liked the video!!! I had tried graphite based spray lube before but it wouldn't conduct anything. The resistance is through the roof. I suspect the manufacturer added an inhibiter of some sort. Perhaps there's others out there without that, but I haven't found them yet.

    If you would use just K2CO3 with water as the electrolyte you can almost get 3x the voltage out of this battery !! Just try it out !

    I learned a lot. I learned that these things are stupid easy to make, stupid easy to mass produce, have almost no carbon footprint, and there is no reason we all aren't driving electric vehicles powered by these. I learned how corrupt the fossil fuel industry is as well since they are the only people possible that could stop this from being expanded on into the auto industry.
    I have read many articles about "new technology" that would revolutionize the auto industry and move us away from fossil fuels where the patents on these technologies were bought by fossil fuel people and then never used. I wasn't so sure that was true until now.

    Hey that's pretty great! Probably someone already suggested using the box that the cards came in as a final stack holder. Also a dry erase board sketch of the assembly would be very helpful. Those of us willing to admit that we are jealous that we didn't think of producing this; salute your nice creative work here. Those little 3 volt motors would also work nicely.

    If you want to build a far more powerful one stack the following. Aluminum cathode, paper towel, wood ash or baking soda paste electrolyte, steel wool with some graphite soda paste, steel anode. Each cell makes about 1.8V and current of about 30mA per square centimeter of cathode. It works a lot better if you mix some rust with the electrolyte paste. Good apocalypse project. ❤

    when you measure current ampere, it means that you do short circuit.. the current will drop shortly.. that's why led light are not bright..

    This battery is WAY more powerful than the hot water in my bathroom shower or the UHF television stations in my area measured at the transmitting antenna terminals...you could almost run an ant's electric scooter halfway around the inside of a cheerio.

    Cool video. The battery should work better if you use 2 different types of alkaline metal. Like copper and aluminum. Or silver and copper in between each layer. Just a suggestion lol cheers

    Israeli company Phinergy and some Indian car manufacturers are getting together to produce batteries for vehicles. They use a filter system using silver apparently that removes co2from the air intake and improves performance with more oxygen. The electrolyte eventually will eat away all the cathode, and the batteries are not rechargeable, but recycling the aluminium hydroxide produced into aluminium is much easier than the lithium counterpart. The shelf life with the electrolyte in it s a problem, so it gets activated with water being pumped into the cells at the start of useage. Very high power to weight ratio. Something in the order of 50kg could give something like 500km or in that ballpark, by my reckoning. It is great for use for long distance travel, whilst a small range rechargeable pack would be great for daily commutes.

    To generate more current, you could increase the size of the cells and make sure your graphite is sufficient and that you are adding enough electrolyte and spreading it evenly WITHOUT OVER SATURATING YOUR BATTERY!!! If you add too much it will likely short out. I suspect that the battery in this exercise had one shorted cell as 10 x .6v would be a bit more than 5.0x volts and the current went to over 11mAh and then dropped rapidly.
    There are some slightly more elaborate home made batteries that produce more voltage and current that you can make and 'store' for use when needed....search them :)

    This works. But the salt water evaporates . You can see the volts dropping fast. In a couple days the terminals will corrode leaving NO power. Try a dry cell using calcium chloride. Damp rid. It sucks moisture out of the air . Keeping your battery producing longer with less corrosive activities. It will last much longer but maybe a little less power

    Part of the issue with current delivery is the fact that aluminium oxide is in effect sapphire. This means your aluminium has an aerospace semiconductor grade insulator on it vastly reducing effective surface area. I have not got a clue how to get round that though without using some highly toxic chemicals, some of which I personally would not want to be in the same town as EG Chlorine Triflouride which wants to poison you, dissolve you, and set you on fire all at the same time.

    I haven't gotten all the way through yet, but I'll like it because of "don't try this at home." Loose translation: Do it at a friend's house, his mum isn't home. Observation, not the music.
    Salt water solution: Your solution is super-saturated, and as soon as it encounters a good substrate, it will crystallize, reducing the battery's current density. Instead of boiling, do this: Using room temperature distilled water, add salt until it dissolves. When you see a little salt in the bottom, you can't get any more salt into solution. This won't crystallize out. Decant the liquid, leave solids. Use non-iodized, as I am uncertain of the reactions possible with potassium iodide. Don't use sea salt, use the most pure you can get. Look at the ingredients. If it has anything but salt, it will reduce battery efficiency.
    Now, it's time to build me one of my own. I'm at my friend's! :) thanks for the how-to!

    So lets calculate the maximum power of this battery pack:
    You could argue,that it can handle
    P=U*I=5V*10mA=50mW.
    But this would be wrong!
    Cause when you measured the voltage the resistance of your multimeter was approx. (normal for multimeters) 10MΩ
    So the current was only
    I=U/R=5V/10MΩ=0.5μA
    So the power you got there at this resistor (the power the resistor consumed) was P=U*I=5V*0.5μA=2.5μW
    And when you shorted it, then the Amps where at max.10mA, but this was measured at a resistor of approx. 0.1Ω (measuring wire+measuring element in the multimeter)
    So the voltage was shorted out to
    U=R*I=0.1Ω*10mA=1mV
    so here the Power applied to the multimeter was P=U*R=1mV*0.1Ω=0.1mW
    But now the question is:
    When the resistance goes up from zero to inf. Where will you get the maximum of the power out of it. So what is the real maximum of the power?
    You could test it, by applying a variable resistor to it, while changing the resistance from near 0Ω to lets say 100KΩ, while measuring the voltage across it and then mapping the power by calculating
    P=U*I=U*U/R=U^2/R
    But this would take a while and wouldnt be so accurate, since the power would drop while you are measuring it.
    So now lets assume that the inner resistance of the batterie is constant (to be able to apply ohms law) To calculate the max power.
    So at first we will have to know the inner resistance. Since we know that the max voltage is 5V (at almoust zero load like multimeter at voltage measurement)
    And since we know that the max current at 0.1Ω resistance is 10mA
    we can calculate the inner resistance.
    So I=(U )/(R ges)=U/(Rm+Ri)
    So Ri=U/I -Rm=5V/10mA -0.1Ω=
    ≈500Ω
    So now the power is:
    P=Um*I=Rm*I*I=
    Rm*(Uges/(Rm+Ri))^2=
    =Rm*(5V/(Rm+500Ω)^2
    You can now plot it and look the max up, or take the derivation in respect to Rm and calculate the value by setting it equal to zero.
    If i take the choice of the graphic calculator it tells me that the maximum is at 500 Ω and 0.0125W so 12.5mW.
    So to check the answer you can calculate:
    I=U/Rges=5V/(500Ω+500Ω)=5mA
    and U=Rm*I=500Ω*5mA=2.5V
    So P=2.5V*5mA=12.5mW.
    If you now calculate with higher or lower values of Rm you will get lower values of P.
    So for example with 501Ω you will get:0.01249999W
    and with 499Ω you will get the same value (probably not exactly but with this amount of accuraty)

      But would be funny if you testet it with the method i explained with a variable resistor. Just go from 1000Ω down to 100Ω and look if there is a peak at 500Ω. I would be very thankfull if you did this. Because then we all can learn from it.

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this isn't an aluminum air battery, it's an aluminum copper battery (where the reactant is copper from the cathode). If you google 'aluminum copper soda battery' they demonstrate the same thing, but using coca-cola as the electrolyte, and no graphite. NurdRage, a professional chemist, made the same mistake in a video 10 years ago (though he used steel wool for the cathode instead of copper). If you try this with an inert conductor like carbon fiber instead of copper mesh you won't see much, if any current. Alternatively, you'll see that if you use an electrolyte with some dissolved copper sulfate (or other copper salt) you'll be able to get a lot more sustained power out of it.
    A limiting factor on any aluminum battery is that you need an electrolyte which can dissolve some aluminum, but not so much that it runs away and corrodes through the aluminum. For other metal-air batteries they go for slightly basic conditions (pH 12~13), though if you still want a working copper-aluminum battery you'd need to use ammonia as the base since it forms soluble copper complexes. If you want to make a true aluminum-air battery, you'd want to use some very dilute sodium hydroxide (~0.1% by mass) along with the saturated sodium chloride in the electrolyte.

    Short circuit current of only 10 mA is not great, any other battery would crank amps and get hot! I shorted a used polaroid battery from an instant film pack and it pushed 30 amps!

      Haha good observation. Yes it is on the weak side. You can only really get so far with aluminum foil and saltwater. I was more just trying to showcase the concept of a metal-air battery. Maybe in the future I can make some improvements to the power output. Cheers!

      The issue is the resistance and the lack of Oxygen able to be adsorbed by the graphite/paint mixture. Use a much thinner binder and include Activated Carbon for the Oxygen. You can ditch the copper current collector as well.

      The batteries in the newer Impossible Polaroid film packs are actually single-use lithium-ion batteries...I found this out when I cut one open and hacked a loogie onto it and it got hot, then poured Coke Zero into it and instant fire grenade...and it phrygian DOESN'T GO OUT...just like early celluloid motion picture film, it will continue to BURN UNDERWATER as it has it's own oxidizer...almost set the house on fire...luckily I was able to keep the surrounding area of the carpet cool, but the room was full of thick grey smoke with dark burn marks on the carpet...good thing I got the room vented out before my parents got home from grocery shopping or the smoke alarm went off...If you short the battery on the newer ones, make sure you don't have any valuable or irreplaceable items (including mixtapes) in the immediate area...

    I used those flashlights for motion sensitive under cabinet lighting (on my channel).
    400mA lights them brightly, so it looks like, under load, that is lower, maybe 200mA?

    Who said the voltaic pile was dead. They make a carban spray that works really well. Its actually a lubricant but it drys

      Do you know which brand of carbon spray? I tried one before, but it didn't work. The manufacturer had mixed something into it to increase the resistance of the spray. Which defeated the purpose for me.

      Correction. Its a graphite spray. Not carbon. Its sold as a dry lubricant. The brand is called ZEP. I'm not sure if it's still sold. Its an old can. I found them at work. Also check out the dual carbon battery. Its rechargeable. Robbert Murray smith has an ok video on it

      I tried using pencil lead previously but got fairly poor results. I suspect it's because of the binder used to hold the graphite together. I'm not sure if that's for all pencils or just the brand I was using, but I haven't tried pencil lead since then.

    Very nice demo.
    Does the battery consume all of the metallic AL? If not you may want to mix some household bleach into the electrolytes, its pretty darn good at accelerating oxidation in AL but getting the ratio right so you don't burn up the battery too fast might be a trick.
    Also. I could only just hear you over the music at times, demos like this need to be mixed voice forward

      I'm glad you like it. No there is usually some extra aluminum sticking around. It may just be because the water evaporates before it can be consumed. Good idea on the bleach.       @@MechanicGoneRogue This (slow reaction) is also the reason why your short circuit current is too low. Aluminium oxide film acts as an insulator greatly increasing the battery's internal resistance. Bleach or Sodium Hydroxide added to the electrolyte would dissolve the oxide film and will do wonders for the battery's power delivery. Oh, and lose that music.

    This is a terrific DIY. Sorry for the harsh prev comment, but the sound quality is awful, and your content deserves better. One minor suggestion - a rubber band or binder clip instead of the final duct tape to hold it all together so it can be disassembled should the need arise.

    How does air enter into the battery? All of catodes are stacked by other electrodes.

      That's a really good question. The answer is not well at all. Some does get in through minor cracks or imperfections between the cells, but its a minimal amount. It's a design flaw that I worked to address in later models.
