This is a short documentary about Simon Lavaud, a blacksmith based in the French Alps.
In this piece we explore and learn how important it is to preserve the traditional methods, and also how Simon implements some of this thinking into his own way of life.
Alex and I wanted to film a passion project last year in July since we had a couple of days off and I am so glad we did as this turned out to be one of the most interesting projects I worked on and I hope you enjoy it!
Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the French Alps.
(Best to watch in a dark room with earphones)

I had a great time working on this with you, I think we ended up with something really pretty considering we only had the one day to shoot it and it was just the two of us! The edit looks beautiful, well done man. Hopefully we can get a few more done this year together!

I Fuckin Love this. I’m cursing intentionally because it was that good for me. Light, the sound quality, but mainly Simon’s story and the way he articulates how much he loves what he does and he wants his kids to perceive it.

Il s'agit sans aucun doute d'un excellent documentaire de Florent Piovesan et Alex Botton. Une grande et très intéressante histoire portée au cinéma d'une manière magistrale. Je les félicite sincèrement car tout ce qui émane de leur travail révèle de l'amour pour ce qu'ils font et un grand professionnalisme. La qualité de l'image, le cadrage, l'éclairage, le rythme, le son et bien d'autres choses encore constituent ce grand film du début à la fin. J'ai été littéralement pris au piège par la grande sensibilité dont vous faites preuve avec cette histoire impressionnante qui présente également un personnage exceptionnel comme l'artisan Simon Lavaud.

My friend, this was shot beautifully. One question. How much light did you add to the natural lighting in order to expose so perfectly in a seemingly dark environment?
Thanks so much!! We use a Nanlite FS 150B and one Pavotube 15C II, mainly for the interview and also to add either a bit of room tone or to focus the light on the face or hands when needed. We didn't have a lot of space to work with so the main light was motivated by the window and we moved the tube around :)

Excellent! Can you say if you overexposed and then put it down in-post? Shadows seen super clean. Also what microphone you used to record the various sounds? ❤
Thanks!! We didn't overexposed no, as the fire and blades were so hot we had to expose for the highlights! So I denoised a few shots and added some contrasts :)
And we used the MKE600 for both the interview and ambient sounds as well as the camera mics and also some SFX.
@@OfTwoLands Thanksv a lot, it looks really great. can you share the denoise settings if you did that in resolve? When i try to do this it’s always looses so much detail it looks plastic. Could you please also say which lens you used?

Thank you, glad you liked it!! And no I don’t sharpen my footage, I add a little bit of contrast (and saturation) but the rest is done using Filmconvert and curves :).

Well done. What made those DZO Vespid Retro stand out for you? Why did you pick them? They seem to have a unique bokah character, also a soft fall off to the side, at least on the wider lenses. Did you shoot full frame?
Thanks so much!! I already the Vespid retros from the previous shoot and loved them so decided to also use them for this one :).
This was shot in S35 since the 6K Ff wasn’t released yet.

Thanks!! We didn’t use any sliders or gimbals. Handheld and easyrig :). The moving knives shots were handheld with great concentration haha!
