put a battery cut off on the negative (earth) side of the battery pack. Being able to disconnect a battery, quick (since it's utterly buried under the boxes) is a major safety bonus....for when you run a screw into a positive cable and need to quickly disconnect (yeah, great story, now my carpet has a stripe - but thankfully I could shut it down before it burned to the ground).

The DC-DC charger is better to be at the 2ndary battery. It is trying to compensate for voltage drop, It can't see the voltage drop at the back battery if it is before all the voltage drop...
Also the DC-DC charger doesn't like engine heat.
    So Woody did this correct.
I have a dual battery system in my WRX, With the addition of a separate, large current relay, I don't have to worry about jump-starting my car.

Or don't take the Paj into the water. FR

Just a few tips & ideas if interested: Some you may already know but good suggestions for others..
You can use a bicycle "floor" pump to pump up your tires.. Off-Road is 12+psi. Compressor not the most necessary, but it could be useful in its own way for adding "on-demand" boost.. o.O Use turbo for compressed air if even possible.. Instead of Nitro, Turbo & Superchargers, how about just hooking up compressed air as a form of "forced induction"? Use it only when needed on N/A engine, like Nitro.. Twin Charging probably best for 4x4 since you aren't reaching mach speeds... or even just a supercharger 😋 Ryobi has a small battery powered compressor..
If minimizing enough you could just put a mattress in the back and keep out the folding seats then carry a kayak/canoe on top. One side you could put the drawer and the fridge and sleep on the other side.. Drawer not the most necessary either but a fridge can definitely be useful over extended periods.
Table on back door a great idea for using extra space, even a small rubber collapsing bucket for a sink(nice your speakers high), you can put a water tank instead of a compressor.. maybe a shared episode with mcm? 4wd/247 you might like to collab with.. being local too..
Metal Rails around body for protection..
Automatic transmission best for 4x4, it has a "dampening" effect preventing breakage of CV joints & axles which is most common to replace, bring spares.. even driveshafts..
Might be useful to learn how to weld using 2 batteries, I am sure AL knows what I am talking about...
4x4 quads have something called a "Tigers Tail" for pulling other quads out of the mud. It is a retracting tow rope on the back of your rig, they may make ones that fit 4x4 trucks...
Lghts up high allow you to see better over crests as you can see in Rally Races at night..
Getting locking differentials can make all the difference too
Bigger Tires, Brakes & Suspension.. If using Bigger Wheels then Bigger Brakes are essential, especially if adding extra weight.. smaller lifts better than large ones..

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 3 роки тому

The bicycle floor pump will overheat and start melting parts before you pumped enough air to inflate a truck tire. Even if it didn’t that’s a whole lot of work to maybe air up 1 tire.
You can use compressed air as forced induction, but it requires a large tank and some way to regulate the flow into the engine. Just a little compressor doesn’t flow enough to make any extra power for an engine.

Just remember 50% discharge only on those AGM batteries if you want them to last any more than a few discharge cycles. Lithium’s can safely go to 90% without shortening their lives. The equivalent lithium for that pack is a 100A/Hr battery at probably a third of the weight.

Do not under any circumstances let it go completely flat as you may not get it back from that. Yes the lithium’s are more expensive however a good lithium will last a 1000 cycles. Have to agree with everyone in regards to AGM being useless, $500 LiFePo4 12.8 will get you 200ah easy at less than 1/3 the weight. Setting up off grid is not to be rushed into takes knowledge and planning something I thought you guys did until now! No reception through the vehicle though with that antenna position.

Should have put those circuit breakers in the rear door cover next to those speakers.
Move that compressor air tank under the vehicle and mount a water tank and pump in that space.

    All nice gear nicely setup.
Although if possible I would have mounted the batteries somewhere under the middle of the vehicle . Don’t forget to cover the terminals to prevent accidents.
One thing a lot of people do is kit out their 4x4 to the max and totally forget that all that gear adds weight.
You really want to minimise any weight you add by striping off anything that’s not absolutely required and trying to get it positioned as low as possible and as close to the centre of gravity as possible. Every bit of weight you add to the vehicle also reduces its towing capacity.

Great work Woody, I’ve built a few 4WD rigs and it looks as though you thought/planned and fitted it all quite well. Might just be I haven’t worked on Pajeros but needing to drop the headlining to remove the factory racks is a bit of a pain but all cars have their quirks

Looks like the Ridgerider gear might have been a contra deal, but a lithium (LifePO4) will give far more useable power and 1/2 the weight... The Redarc BCDC will have a lithium profile too. A N70 size 100ah lithium battery weighs 12kg, allows at least an 80% depth of discharge (vs 50% for AGM) and many times the cycle life.
Academic for now but when those batteries die you have an easy upgrade path.

Make sure any holes you put in the back are sealed. Just bolts tend to leak so some sealant may help. Apply the same idea as keeping water in an engine to keep it away from your electrics in the back.

Hey Woody, I reckon for the two tone idea go with Raptor or Bully Liner, would provide solid scratch resistance when you're out in the bush
