I have a Gen 1 BRZ (well, I have the Toyota 86 version) and I fell in love the instant I drove one. It's the best handling, most engaging car I've ever driven. I haven't driven that many cars, but I have had a mustang gt, and a cobalt SS, am Acura TL type S, and I've ridden in others. I have my 86 running with headers and E-85 so I imagine it feels extremely similar in power to the Gen 2 and I tell you, I wouldn't trade this car for any other. Period. I plan on continuing to love and improve my 86 for as many years as I possibly can.
I used to mod my cars when I was a teen (29 now), and only recently after having a regular ol' sensible i30 for 5 years did I decide to bite the bullet after years of temptation. Bought a 2013 BRZ December last year, and in the short 5 months I've owned it it has immediately become my favourite car I've ever owned. I've owned/modded a lancer, commodore (VX2), s2000 and even a 300Z, and nothing comes close to the amount of fun I have in my BRZ. Gave her UEL headers, a simple catback and some coilovers w/ half decent tyres and somehow it made the car even MORE fun. Definitely the car I stick with for as long as it'll run. It's also fun waving at other 86/BRZ owners on the road too, cool little community!
@@hexen93 I've never gotten to do a huge mod build myself and I want this to be my first. I plan on building the engine with forged internals and putting a supercharger on mine. She feels great at 200whp but I wanna see what 350-400whp feels lol
I’m Stoked for the Focus ST, we can’t get these here anymore in the US, I currently own a 2014 Fiesta ST that I bought new, it’s on a Cobb stage two tune, short shift kit, beefier motor mounts, 3” MBPR exhaust and sticky Mitchlen tires, it has 97,000+ miles on it and still runs great, I’m on my 6th set of tires, that’s how hard I drive it, my friends can’t believe I still have my stock clutch. I’m 73 years young and still love driving on three wheels. The Fiesta Flash 🤙🏼🍺🍺🍺
You are awesome sir. I hope to be just like you when I am your age, though everything will probably be electric and self driving so yeah, the hobby will probably die by than. Keep on rocking!
Well done MotorMag, wholesome, unbiased car content with great videography! Took a gamble and ordered the new BRZ last year, looks like it will pay off :) but getting one delivered is literally like waiting for your first child to be born (9 months!)
Mine got delivered last weekend. Worth the wait! Whilst you are puddling around in the break in period, the one thing that strikes you, is how comfortable and refined it is! It may be an exercise in finessing the old car, but the result is greater than the sum of the adjustments made.
Patience grasshopper! I'm about to order mine this week, so maybe Xmas delivery for me? I don't mind as long as it lives up to expectations, which I think is a no brainer. Also, it will not be as expensive as that first child......or second.....or third!🙂
Give the person behind the camera a raise! So many beautiful shots throughout. Edit: I figured I'd give my thoughts while I'm here. Gotta say I've been struggling a lot on whether I want to put my money down on a brz/86 or a GR Yaris. My brain loves the Yaris but my heart loves the brz/86. From factory, the Yaris seems setup to perfection for endless fun and performance, but I find myself disliking the interior, mainly the infotainment setup. I also wish it came with factory options for a rally style spoiler and lip, diffuser+skirts like Tom's racing has available. The styling feels a little awkward without those touches to me. The brz/86 on the other hand I love with every fibre of being, inside and out. Its modern classic interior and refreshing body lines are unmatched for me. I'm sure there would be times I wish I had a sports car that can throw me back in my seat with boost and make me laugh from how excessive it is, but it's a beautiful machine that I know I would enjoy more from its holistic approach. It's truly a love letter to enthusiasts and the price is right. Great video 🙂
Well that is good news. I am ordering a BRZ, S coupe, manual in WR blue this week. I know the colour is common as dirt but it says Subaru and to be honest, I like the colour. It is good value, looks stunning in my opinion and is a real sports car, front engine, rear wheel drive manual. I'm not bothered about lack of turbocharging and if you are as old as me (60) you will notice the 0 - 100kmh and the standing 400m time betters the legendary Ford XY GTHO Falcon and E49 Charger (Wheels & SCW) Sure there is a 50 odd year gap in technology and weight differences but the BRZ gives away horsepower and torque to both these Aussie icons. I can afford a BRZ, plus those seat warmers will be appreciated by me and my girl's.......um......mature bottoms🙂
I'm a bit jelly of all the options in this category, in the states it's just the mustang, n30, mx5, gti and brz. I wish the brz sounded a bit better but I should be picking mine up at the end of the month (ordered in February).
@@wayward03 Congrats, hope delivery goes as planned for you mate. I was looking at Mustangs, but couldn't justify the $73K Aussie dollars for a new one or $60K for low mileage used. I will pay $43500 for the new top spec(S) BRZ and may be able to keep my 68 Mercury Marquis 390 Coupe to play with.......maybe?🤔 As for sound I will see what it is like, have been sussing out some exhaust vids and the ARK something? catback, sounds good. I would hate it to be too loud or droney? on the highway though.
Yeah, it's a fair point, but we can't really build the rules around what dealers are getting away. It's something we can think about next year, but I suspect it is what it is. - Mike Stevens
Yeah I lost interest in 'Performance Car of the Year' a long time ago ($$). 'Bang For Your Bucks' was more relevant but still flawed with measuring stats against $$ . But 'Sportscar of the Year' is exactly what needed to happen. In my opinion FUN is the most important factor. Faster, lap times, power doesn't always equal more fun. Well done MOTOR. Very happy with the BRZ win. But I might end up going for the GR86 as I suspect it will be cheaper. Pity this test didn't include a Fiesta ST.
I have a GT86 and a Focus ST (MK3). Though not the generation in this review. But the gene of these two cars are there. GT86 is a great track day machine and sliding toy while the ST is really easy to drive with its torque but at the same time still has lots of fun for daily and country road. I have my smile on my face all the time when driving either of them.
How very well presented, filmed and edited. Really good job and enjoyable to watch. I have a GR and a Golf R, so am biased but concur with your views and thoughts. Thanks
What a week, what a line-up. Regrettably the BRZ was one of the few cars I didn't get behind the wheel of but that MX-5 was something special too. The market is full of amazing options for any buyer.
Not surprised with number 1. I have a 2014 Scion FR-S, it’s great once you fix the torque dip. Tuned, e-85, UEL, and Tomi exhaust. With more mods to come
Great video team! Really enjoyed watching. However I would have liked to see more individual content on each car and was disappointed in how little was said on the i30N sedan
@25:41 come on guys, you're meant to know the numbers. the gr yaris has a wheelbase of 255.8 cm and the current 911 gt3 is 245.6cm. Why are you making up concern from nothing?
Congratulations! Excellent and complete test! I love the BRZ and am one step away from buying it. However, MY 2023 is not available for test drive in my country and I have only driven the previous first generation brz which I really liked. My only concern is if the suspension of the new one is too hard because the roads here are not good. I would like a quick comparison in this area with the other cars presented here and with the ford fiesta mk8 (my 2023) which is my second choice. Also is the roof on the new brz lower than the old 1st gen for easy entry? My height is 178 cm. Thanks in advance for your reply!
The automatic BRZ is good for what it is. It's an acceptably intelligent gearbox but it doesn't have the same level of engagement as the manual. Same great chassis and powerplant, but missing a significant element of the 'experience' - to me at least.
Where is the Audi S3 or Honda Civic type R or vw polo GTI or Renault Megane RS or Ford Fiesta ST or Hyundai Kona N or Mini Cooper GP or Mercedes Benz A45 AMG or Suzuki Swift sport
Personally, id like to have the Ford ST's chassi, the Toyota's body control, the BMW's gearbox, the Hyundai's suspension, the Subaru's rear wheel drive, the Skoda's spaceyness, the Mazdas looks, VW's Dynamic Chassis Control, and the engine of an *Jaguar F-Type V8* to fit in small form factor! (oh heck, make it the looks of the Shaguar as well..) 😄 👍
Wonderful review and I was surprised the BRZ got out on top in this company. That makes me so happy I ordered my Toyota GR86 a month ago (BRZ isn't available in Europe). 👍
Seems all the BRZ needs is some Brembos in a TS version. Anyone from Motor hazard a guess at where you'd rank the MY21 Type R that you tested at PI when it was released?
The 10th Gen Civic Type-R is the undefeated champ of, well, everything. Every single competition or comparison we've put it in, it has won. Would PCOTY '22 have been any different? That's a tough one. It would probably have ended up in the top one or two!
@@andyenright1436 Not bad for a platform going on 5 years. I know it's not still on sale but pity you couldn't wrestle the keys away from Honda Australia to AUS-001. I was lucky enough to snag an LE and I honestly can't ever see myself selling it they're just that good.
@@michaelferraris2441 Maybe we can try to get hold of one later in the year for a drive with the BRZ and see which champ prevails. That'd be a great day out.
@@andyenright1436 and it needs to be tested up front in its new edition with the GR Corolla too please. I figure the new WRX might not be in the same league
Why I keep my mazdaspeed cuz unfortunately it’s a dead platform that will live on 380whp is so fun plus how cheap it is to mod compared to a evo sti or gti
@@shivamarya5225 It is a fabulous car! I had an ND RF from new for 5 years. I just sold it, and bought a BRZ. The Mazda was brilliant…but it is a toy. It’s difficult to live with as your only vehicle. The BRZ’s added practicality is a bonus.
I owned and loved the MK4 Focus ST. An absolutely awesome car. Unfortunately it was written off by another moron driver and waiting list negated me getting another one. I ended up getting a Kona N which is insane as a car. I'm surprised you guys didn't have it on the list to be honest. Great review nonetheless.
@@m_thebox We brought a Stelvio Q to PCOTY a couple of years back and it felt a bit out of its depth against pure performance cars, especially on track. We're going to wrangle a separate megatest of high-performance SUVs and we'd running a long term Kona N and know just how focused it is.
I have a sedan n and no way does it make you feel "disconnected" and because you get back seats and a boot and possibly the best interior apart from the Mustang it's still the winner in my book . Good viewing tho
So glad I put a deposit done for a GR86. I knew once I saw it release and saw the only one I’ve seen drive past me, I knew I needed one. I’ll be the 2nd GR in my area about 2 hours every direction 😁
I bought a i30 sedan N. Yaris was too tiny, impractical with a child, overpriced, outdated interior with budget tech. I have all the creature comfort ventliated seats in aussie summer, a large boot, decent rear seats, a fully customisable performance and a very exciting exhaust noise. It was no competition.
"Budget tech"? ...heated seats ...heated steering wheel...blind spot monitoring ...adaptive radar cruise control with lane assist (literally turns the corners for you and adjusts your speed when a car cuts in front) ...Toyota ADAS as standard (autonomous emergency braking) ...automatic hazard light activation on hard braking in an emergency stop.. auto headlight switch (turns highbeams on when its dark and turns it off when oncoming traffic approaches)....anti glare electronic mirror..... android auto/apple carplay as standard with AWD interchangable drive modes with a single button (can go from FWD to RWD in 1 second or have a 50/50 split) ...not to mention active AWD found in the likes of Subaru and not "on-demand". "Impactical with a child?" (you're comparing a full size family sized sedan vs a performance hatchback just fyi....) "Overpriced?" (Someone seems upset they weren't one of the first 1000 people to get them for $39500 drive away) "Yaris was too tiny" (i am 6'2 and i fit in it perfectly with plenty of room ...unless you got a fat gut then you got bigger problems to worry about then the car's actual size) "a fully customisable performance?" (not even going to touch this one lol) Mate , honestly even i am not sure what you're on about but i know for damn certain you don't either LOL. Congratulations on your purchase , the i30n is a great car , but to compare the two is just downright silly and you're embarassing yourself online by making such statements.
I test drove an i20N, and had a ride in one later on, but it’s suspension is not just too firm, but it runs out of travel too quickly. I slammed it into its bump stops just driving around on its test drive. Out where I live, it’d be bounced off the road.
I like how you created a sub-category for the more accessible performance cars. These cars are great but it’s almost impossible for them to compete in a competition with 911 GT3’s and Huracan EVO’s.
I don't think they explained why the Gti 8 didn't place that well in test. I'm assuming it's cost was a bit higher and it seemed like they may have been ranking more for fun per $$$?
serious question , is the Yaris the ugliest sports car ever produced ? it looks like it would be fun on snow , in dirt or going fast in the wet , but it looks like an orthopedic shoe for somebody with a short leg . I mean it makes Subarus look like they have a styling dept .
Would have been interesting to put into this selection of 10 cars. The "Bang For Your Buck" Motor Legend that is the...FIST!!!! (Latest 5-dr 3-cyl LSD version) ..given how well the Focus ST performed in this years bunch of budget sports cars.
Fear not. Given that it's about to get a torque bump, the Fiesta ST is going to qualify for next year's event. And it'll do really well, I can confidently predict that.
Even as a as a "Ford guy" that owned a BA XR6T, an FG XR6 and an LW Focus ST I'm really surprised at the Focus ST being picked over the i30N sedan and the maybe even the GTI. I drove all 3 quite a bit while deciding which to buy and honestly found it the worst of the 3. Maybe the updated 2022 model improves on a couple of things to put it ahead of the GTI but from my time with them(all automatic mind you) it wasn't even close to the i30N sedan. The Hyundai felt like it pulled harder, cornered better, and had a lot more fun factor than the SA Focus ST.
I've driven the i30n and the focus st, both manual, and felt no significant difference in handling or acceleration. 🤷🏼♂️ Most noticeable difference was the superior interior quality of the ford, which kind of surprised me. The i30 interior is nasty.
Great review. I bought a GR Rallye Yaris and I must say I was shocked to see the 0-100km/hr time. It's really that fast? It sure doesn't feel like it. After a year of owning it I'm still unsure whether I love it or not however, mostly because the only time it's any real fun is when you're thrashing it to the limit. It's also a car that doesn't reward delicate inputs. It's either grab it by the neck and strangle it or it doesn't move. I wouldn't call it flowing. More on/off, almost like a car that you're waiting to be run-in but it never happens. Driven slowly it's boring, almost to the point of being dull. It even sounds boring. My Dyson vacuum cleaner sounds more interesting. And your point about the Focus Still being great to drive, even at slower speeds, is a good one. 90% of the time these cars are going to be driven at 40km/hr on freeways, watching out for speed cameras. Sometimes fast doesn't always mean exciting and this test is proof positive that you can more fun in a much slower car. Well done Subaru/Toyota for sticking to the core value of that little coupe.
Have had a Yaris GR and found it to be extremely fun around town, and especially when going at it, unfortunately in Australia I don't think it's even possible remotely enjoying any of these cars without breaking our draconian nanny state "road safety" laws.
Why is practicality a factor in this test? Its sports car of the year, keep that for car of the year. Mx5 shouldve won easily no comparison between the rest, only the brz comes close but is still compromised because of rear seats and practicality, compared to the mx5.
The MX5 has no practicality whatsoever. It’s a toy. People buying these cars are often buying their “only car” so the fact that if you lay the BRZ’s useless rear seats flat, you can put a lot of stuff in it, is not an inconsiderable factor. I had an ND RF and it was a great little car. But if my wife and I were going away for any longer than a weekend, we had to take her car. The RF couldn’t take more than one airline sized carry-on. The BRZ can easily swallow two maximum sized airline suitcases and some. But, all other considerations aside, the BRZ is the equal of the MX5 from a driving experience…unless you require topless motoring which only the MX5 can provide.
Just to confirm for this test did Motor Magazine use the higher displacement MX5 or was it the 1.5L? In America we only get the 2.0 but they were getting a 1.5L at one point.
I found it a little odd that when describing the BRZ they kept saying “Subaru did this, did that” without acknowledging the Toyota 86. Everyone knows Toyota took a big part and likely took the lead on it’s development given their vast resources compared to tiny Subaru.
I30n imo is the winner of the lot for a fun street car that can be tracked, fit you're family, dct box so anyone can drive it, and all this for 50k before onroads brand new, saying that I haven't driven the 86/ brz and definitely want to as there hasn't been one bad review on it, but 2 doors and no boot space just doesn't pass as a street usable car for me
Seems like they are judging cars as road cars but performance oriented; however, the roads in the USS are all busted up and broken, and most of these cars would blow tires/rims all the time. That's one reason that a fast "Road car" in the US needs big wheels and tires, big power for the open road, etc.
great video guys but calling these sports cars is a bit of a stretch. The Miata, BRZ, and Mustang can fit that. The other are performance versions of regular cars. Or you know, hot hatches.
Telling me you have no clue about the gr without saying it The gr is nothing like its base car, it doesnt even have a base car actually aince the back is from another toyota lol
Great video, nicely done. Was that Yaris tuned? Its performance data seems abnormally fast compared to any other test I've seen. If the other cars were consistently abnormal I'd put it down to driver skill but most of them are on par or a bit worse than usual. Seems odd
The Yaris was ostensibly stock. It hooked up perfectly and didn't induce any wheelspin when flatshifting. None of us could quite believe the time. The quickest we'd got out of the exact same car before was 5.16s. It was an extremely windy day down on the coast when we were testing and we were running into a headwind off the Bass Strait with some cars and enjoying a strong tailwind with others.
Well I haven't driven the new Hyundai Sedan I30N but own the Mk4 Focus ST (orange fury) and it's shocking how fast you can drive it up a windy wet road and it hangs on. Not the fastest to 100km/h or over a quarter mile but on a twisting road look out.
With regards to cornering, what's the best? I'd like to have seen a final table breaking down criteria and score for each model tested... 😊 I'm looking for a car to have fun on twisty roads... I own a Kia Cerato GT. Thanks for the great comparison though, very helpful!
Marcos, buy their magazine this month which will likely have the data. If you’re craving a corner-carving car, highly recommended either the new BRZ or the i20n. I’ve driven both, their chassis and suspension tuning is fantastic out of the box. If you want to keep your current Kia, I suggest upgrading your tires to Michelin Pilotsport 5/4S or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport.
@@motorofficial @hy0lee has some good advice there. Both of those Hyundais are dynamite. If you prefer to engage the rear of the car a little more, choose the Ford Focus ST. But if I was looking for a pure road car in that category, and you're getting out of a Cerato GT, it's hard to look past the i30 N.
@@andyenright1436 thanks Andy for the extra advice and replying to my dilemma. Definitely will take into consideration ☺️😉 👍 going to subscribe the printed version of the mag!
How is the fieata more fun? I for one would chose the focus over the fiesta any day of the week. It's the quicker car in a straight line and on track, Pulls you harder out of corners, much more features, much better interior and it's the bigger and more practical car.
@@cy9nvs it has a more lively rear end which is a criticism of the i20n not having that. You can have the Focus if you want but with all that extra weight it's not as Chuckable as the Fiesta ST which is more agile. The Fiesta ST is unanimously known as the better drivers car compared to the Focus ST amongst reviewers.
@@cy9nvs argue with the experts then, the i20n is acknowledged as a better track car but the Fiesta ST is the more engaging driving experience. Did you not watch this review? The Mustang was quickest on track but came 7th. Pace doesn't define at all if a car has the best driving experience. Toyota 86 is a perfect example of this. It wasn't the fastest car but was one of the best drivers cars any amount of money can buy.
When you say the BRZ is the No. 1 car, does that mean the GR86 is No. 1 also? They practically the same car, aren't they? I thought the GR Yaris would've scored higher than the i20N.
So the best car, gets marked down because you have to pay for it! The GR wiped the floor on road, on track and is unlike anything else available today - itl also be worth a dam sight more than any of these in 20 years time. You can't get a bespoke homologation car for 30k - at its price point it's actually exceptional value! Great to see it wipe the floor against this lot though 👌
I agree. Most usuable power out of them all, best handling ability, best track times on other reviews, voted number 1 everywhere else, very cheap for a homologation, so most likely best value out of them all. It's a bit silly to be honest. Those N cars are garbage in comparison.
@@stevenmcgeorge1983 100% - and just look at the numbers it put down, quickest off the mark, and only beaten on a track by a car with over 200bhp more (a track which was suited to a car fast in a straight-line aswell). N car - is cheap n cheerful, that's it!
The Yaris was good, but it's far from perfect. I love that car's story, and it's exactly that story that will mean that they;'re worth strong money in years to come. It makes some great numbers too. Some people adore it, others find it strangely less than the sum of its parts. I like the Rallye (I don't much care for the non-Rallye version) but there are some things - such as the seating position and the view out of the vehicle - that don't endear it to all. I think it probably has the least satisfactory shift action of any of the manual cars we tested, the steering never found universal favour etc. It was up against a tough field and it deserved to finish where it did. About the most damning assessment is that it's not a car which seems to flow elegantly at typical road speeds. Everything is somewhat staccato. Bernie was particularly hard on its non-linear responses to inputs. I think I was the most generous in the judging and feel the Rallye has earned a big measure of redemption from last year, but it's still a car with some fairly significant shortcomings.
@@andyenright1436 a strange assessment given that the points you raise are the opposite to virtually all other tests carried out by the motoring press. Certainly some of your criteria require some "subjective" views but the facts are clear for all to see. In reality, the only area you could mark it down on was price vs this sub par competition. Perhaps if it was up against cars costing 150k then that wouldn't of been an issue. Its not really a hot hatch at all, but fall's into that category given its size. Pop it on the right road in the right conditions and pretty much nothing can keep up with it - supermini or supercar. It's a car we will never see the likes of again, holding its own against the best drivers cars around, all for what is in reality a bargain price! A real shame you have done this modern day icon such a disservice in this test.
can't believe GR Yaris is not no1 in this test, kinda weird to see GR86 in top spot despite not even nearly as capable as GR Yaris I do love sportcar, much more than hatchback and hot hatch, still performance of GR86 is inferior to GR Yaris
@@blackrhino44 yes it's around 1.5 - 2 times of GR86 prices. Even more thanks to scalper reseller but it sold out in most countries, so much that most scalper reseller asking between 75k - 90k USD, different from GR86 and by looking at Yaris, that means customers are willing to pay that much for better engine that has turbo as long as performance to price ratio is still good, since most years of reasons and arguments of 86 not going for turbo is it going to be costly and no1 will buy it I just wish GR86 become spiritual successor of Silvia Spec R S15
The decision taking is not fully relatable imo for the ranking. And why did you chose the understeering BRZ instead of the GR86 with the much sportier setup? And aren’t there so many more better performing cars under a 100k? And ultimately i didn’t expect the GR Yaris to win but why was it ranked so low, it’s even more fun to drive than a M2Competition, is it because you don’t have very twisty roads in Australia and practicability? Thank you!
Based on the criterias shown, the results seem lopsided. The I30N and I20N should be revisited, with it tuned for the track since it has the ability to do so. The i30N should be the crown IMO.
There’s definitely commerciality at play with motor journos, but then again I can see a world where Ford Australia (who couldn’t care less about Focus) donated one cent to them, yet here we are.

I know the colour is common as dirt but it says Subaru and
to be honest, I like the colour.
It is good value, looks stunning in my opinion and is
a real sports car, front engine, rear wheel drive manual.
I'm not bothered about lack of turbocharging and if you
are as old as me (60) you will notice the 0 - 100kmh
and the standing 400m time betters the legendary
Ford XY GTHO Falcon and E49 Charger (Wheels & SCW)
Sure there is a 50 odd year gap in technology
and weight differences but the BRZ gives away horsepower
and torque to both these Aussie icons.

Great video, I agree with the winner 👌
Only complaint - the Mustang Mach 1 is selling for over 100 grand which probably negates it being on this list

Mach 1 sold for 98k in NZ!
Love this! All about affordable fun. Great idea
That's the thinkin', yep!
Pity this test didn't include a Fiesta ST.
thank you reenforcing my confirmation bias! Taking delivery of my brz in the next couple of months!

Would you say the automatic brz would double down on its results or would it score lower
Brz for the 🏆 😁
Personally, id like to have the Ford ST's chassi, the Toyota's body control, the BMW's gearbox, the Hyundai's suspension, the Subaru's rear wheel drive, the Skoda's spaceyness, the Mazdas looks, VW's Dynamic Chassis Control, and the engine of an *Jaguar F-Type V8* to fit in small form factor! (oh heck, make it the looks of the Shaguar as well..) 😄 👍
Great comparison. Still loving my BRZ 2 years on!

So, a Toyota GR 86 won too!
😂 i have three kids yet GR is perfect. Depends what you want - family car or sports car
A case of an i30 owner lost his mind and thought his car competes with GR but came to his senses at the end.
GR Yaris is Homologation car, it is a race car but legal on the road, what do you expect from race car/track focused car, you pay more to get less
"Impactical with a child?" (you're comparing a full size family sized sedan vs a performance hatchback just fyi....)
"Overpriced?" (Someone seems upset they weren't one of the first 1000 people to get them for $39500 drive away)
"Yaris was too tiny" (i am 6'2 and i fit in it perfectly with plenty of room ...unless you got a fat gut then you got bigger problems to worry about then the car's actual size)
"a fully customisable performance?" (not even going to touch this one lol)

Just ordered one, who know's how long I'll have to wait to get it but I'm very excited :D
I test drove an i20N, and had a ride in one later on, but it’s suspension is not just too firm, but it runs out of travel too quickly. I slammed it into its bump stops just driving around on its test drive. Out where I live, it’d be bounced off the road.
Wonderful review!
I like how you created a sub-category for the more accessible performance cars. These cars are great but it’s almost impossible for them to compete in a competition with 911 GT3’s and Huracan EVO’s.
U drive an old mini. Stfu lol
That's irrelevant
What about the golf R 👌
(Latest 5-dr 3-cyl LSD version)

Fear not. Given that it's about to get a torque bump, the Fiesta ST is going to qualify for next year's event. And it'll do really well, I can confidently predict that.
@@andyenright1436 The GR86 as well
Even as a as a "Ford guy" that owned a BA XR6T, an FG XR6 and an LW Focus ST I'm really surprised at the Focus ST being picked over the i30N sedan and the maybe even the GTI.
Most noticeable difference was the superior interior quality of the ford, which kind of surprised me. The i30 interior is nasty.
I^ve driven both but i'm more the guy with analogue feelings. I can tell you right away the Focus ST is in my opinion better.
Great film but, where were the Fiesta ST, Supra, Boxster, Cayman, Alpine?
Over $100k most of them
Great review.
No sports car is fun driving slow. Ridiculous comment.
40kms on a freeway? Lol
Have had a Yaris GR and found it to be extremely fun around town, and especially when going at it, unfortunately in Australia I don't think it's even possible remotely enjoying any of these cars without breaking our draconian nanny state "road safety" laws.
Great piece.
Why is practicality a factor in this test? Its sports car of the year, keep that for car of the year. Mx5 shouldve won easily no comparison between the rest, only the brz comes close but is still compromised because of rear seats and practicality, compared to the mx5.
If it’s just about performance the Gr Yaris wins easily (except for the 100k Mustang which should not be part of the review…)
Some of us can only atferd to own and run one car, so kind of a point for it to also fulfill everyday needs...

I found it a little odd that when describing the BRZ they kept saying “Subaru did this, did that” without acknowledging the Toyota 86. Everyone knows Toyota took a big part and likely took the lead on it’s development given their vast resources compared to tiny Subaru.
Subaru did all of the development on the gen 2s.

@@andyenright1436 it totally skipped my mind ya'll were in Australia.
Seems like they are judging cars as road cars but performance oriented; however, the roads in the USS are all busted up and broken, and most of these cars would blow tires/rims all the time. That's one reason that a fast "Road car" in the US needs big wheels and tires, big power for the open road, etc.
Great video
great video guys but calling these sports cars is a bit of a stretch. The Miata, BRZ, and Mustang can fit that. The other are performance versions of regular cars. Or you know, hot hatches.

@@TheDoctor46vr yeah that's highly debatable if you ask me. How is it the better drivers car if the focus is quicker on track?
Could be that the updated fiesta st has only just come to market in the UK, so may not reach Australia for a little while yet?
@@cy9nvs argue with the experts then, the i20n is acknowledged as a better track car but the Fiesta ST is the more engaging driving experience.
Did you not watch this review? The Mustang was quickest on track but came 7th. Pace doesn't define at all if a car has the best driving experience. Toyota 86 is a perfect example of this. It wasn't the fastest car but was one of the best drivers cars any amount of money can buy.
Australia : BRZ is an affordable sports car for 44k
Thailand : Underpowered sports car for 126k (in comparison that's 4 civics)
So the focus and brz are better than the faster , more space , louder , more fun to drive the Elantra N ?
Pop it on the right road in the right conditions and pretty much nothing can keep up with it - supermini or supercar.

and by looking at Yaris, that means customers are willing to pay that much for better engine that has turbo as long as performance to price ratio is still good, since most years of reasons and arguments of 86 not going for turbo is it going to be costly and no1 will buy it
I just wish GR86 become spiritual successor of Silvia Spec R S15
Same tought
I’m glad I live in the US.
That drift from the BRZ 😊
Putting an 83,000 mustang in an affordable car video is enough to make me unsubscribe. Like wtf
Thank you!
We don't have the GR86 here yet. And the BRZ wasn't doing a whole lot of understeering.
@@andyenright1436 ah okey sorry them. Yea the BRZ has a more understeer setup than the GR86
Because the GR86 is not available in Australia until the second half of 2022.
The BRZ is probably the least “understeery” car there!
@@richardhoulton4016 correct "there" i didn't knew the GR86 wasn't yet available in Australia
4.5 seconds? WHAT are these numbers....
Based on the criterias shown, the results seem lopsided. The I30N and I20N should be revisited, with it tuned for the track since it has the ability to do so.
The i30N should be the crown IMO.
GR Yaris, i30n and Skoda VRS should have been higher with respect to how you were talking them up
Team mustang for me. Looks the most badass imo.
Engine sound should be a category.
BRZ FTW😤
hey where's the ford fiesta?
**Spoiler Alert** Subaru Australia donated the most to Motor magazine this year.
There’s definitely commerciality at play with motor journos, but then again I can see a world where Ford Australia (who couldn’t care less about Focus) donated one cent to them, yet here we are.
I'll have one of each , please.
