I knew this guy is blowing up after I saw him in Community series and then all of sudden I find out he does really quality music (my fav. track is 3005)
It’s weird that Redbone was his hit. I’ve been a Childish Gambino fan since he started and I didn’t care for Redbone at all. Like, have ya heard his other tracks. So many bangers and dope flows.
its because it showed all his peers that hes got more talent than they all think, and that its not even a competition or anything. its music its expressing yourself, with that song its like the first time people started to accept him expressing himself. I think redbone is one of his most experimental tracks at least for the time it came out in his discography, it really didn’t sound like anything he did before
Nah he's still going to be making music & working on other projects. He said this next upcoming album is the end of the Childish Gambino CHARACTER. He's mentioned in multiple interviews how the childish gambino character is coming to an end, how he views CG as representation of his youth, but hes not in his youth anymore. Hes matured and grown to a new stage in his life, so he doesnt need to be held back by his youthful immature character anymore. Childish Gambino was his "coming of age" story arc for all intents & purposes. Him finding his place, & cementing that place in the hip hop industry and just Hollywood in general

He was born Donald McKinley Glover at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia. His mother, Beverly (Smith), ran a daycare center, and his father, Donald Glover, is a retired postal worker. He is not, despite rumors, related to actor Danny Glover.
It's sad that the BET Awards didn't want him to perform the song this is america yet along give him an award for it and Jamie Foxx Literally Had Too Make The Crowd Sing It but he WON 4 GRAMMYS For It , I was disappointed and shocked at the same time
A lot of his early music was fantastic and super ahead of its time. I'd say he's made stuff AML and onwards that has actually at times been more corny than his old stuff (but still pretty good). People are just uncomfortable with rap that doesn't meet the corporate standard for 'cool'. Do you really think 'The Last' is corny or downright bad? Or We Ain't Them? Home? Outside? LES? Break? Silk Pillow? Backpackers? Eat Your Vegetables? Grind? I'm So Focused? Easy? Glory? There's so much corny music out there by rappers whose real talent is conforming to whatever the standards for cool are at that moment, I've always found that shit incredibly uncool, Gambino has been unapologetically himself in hip hop for nearly 20 years now, giving a way more interesting perspective than most of his contemporaries have at any point during that time period. And doing it all just for the love of it since no matter how excellent the work he produces is the bar is always set higher for him than people who make dogshit that doesn't make people think too hard. It's not his fault audiences are shallow and insecure and would rather hear drake tell them how cool he is so they can feel like that's them, than be confronted with their own vulnerability by someone honest, innovative and subversive - y'know, the shit that true hip hop is supposed to be about?

I highly admire Donald Glover; the musician, the writer, the actor, the person. He’s one of the few who can do it all with his own style. He’s a true artist.
We've really got to let go of this notion that there has to be a deep reason not to like someone's art. Art is the epitome of subjectivity. There doesnt have to be some deep reason for other people not liking something that you enjoy. I lnew absolutely nothing about his life, never watched him on tv, and just didnt like his rapping voice. Then he started singing, and it sounded better toe than his rapping. It was that simple for me, and i feel like its that simple for most people, more often than not
I always hear his older music get hate, but he actually had bars. Check out his song "Bonfire." Even better, there's even a lyric video. Watch that one so you can really enjoy all the wordplay and appreciate the lyrics. The beat does sound a little dated these days, but lyrically, he's on point in that one.
He has a very right brain dominate artistic brain. Rappers at least the majority are very plain and simple, not stupid, but not original. They are sheep following the pack.

He's not a great rapper like Cole and Kendrick. But I'd still say he's good, I think the problem is his lines can be corny, which is understandable. But I respect that he at least made an effort with his skill. But you're right, he is far better at other things.
