Enjoying AMAZING YAMAHA DX7 presets on MODX

- I've imported the famous 32 factory presets of the legendary YAMAHA DX7 from 1983 onto the new YAMAHA MODX 6 workstation synth keyboard. Let's enjoy once more these amazing patches, such as the iconic bass, brass, strings and of course, E PIANO!
I'll run the sounds through the internal FX and synth architecture of the MODX such as filter, reverb, chorus and delay.
I used the YAMAHA FM CONVERTER to convert the DX7 sysex into MODX format:

YAMAHA MODX MONTAGE tutorial - Load DX7 FM presets
ua-cam.com/video/WPIzX-fyzYo/v-deo.html
the tubular bells effect was used in the Top Gun theme tune.
hi! i updated the firmware of modx but i didnt have backup for sounds.. what can i do?..
I still have my DX7 from 1984 and I'm still totally in love with it. The sounds are so special.
mad respect for keeping that machine going for so long. Must be quite expensive to run them these days I imagine with all the repairs here and there
@@ezassegai4793 No not really. I have a mk1 and it's mint
@@ezassegai4793 I have a Mk1 and the only thing I got sorted out was the battery. They are built like tanks.
@@nictraxJapanese engineering baby! Cheers!
@@BlingtingSam Like Akai. The AK47 of samplers.
I love it how the MODX has such high samplerate and bitdepth that the presets sound like pure analog synth doing FM synthesis.
YES YES YES! Thats it right there!! Who is still using DX7 sounds today? Im first one to say, I DO!!
I do, I still have mine from 1984. It's the love of my life beside the M1.
I do :)
The amazing thing is that 30-yr old FM patches still load and work in a modern synth!
They do, but you have to use a conversation tool first. I hope one day Yamaha will allow us to load the standard 32 patch bank sysex files ( 4104k file size ) straight off a USB stick - that would be awesome!!!
Growing up with arcade games using Yamahas FM-synthesizerchips, I love the sound of the FM-synths. This sounds great. Well played, and it can never be too much Reverb :D
me too, sega genesis ftw! and, of course, all their arcade machines that consumed all my 10p
5:53 reminds me of the game Paperboy :-)
i see lot of demonstration of this synth , for me your demonstration is the best !! you play and not talk for nothing only for sharing your hapiness !!
Even though I've heard these presets soooo many times, they're still fantastic with some effects on them...
I feel like I'm stuck in a John Hughes movie. High praise. Really enjoyed this, thanks Woody.
I've always been curious about how this machine would bring the DX7 back to life. Impressed. Thanks for demonstrating.
I still say modx stands for modern dx because the original is such an icon they can't let it go.
Yes it may look like a montage but to me its a dx7 grown up.
I sort of knew the sounds would be even better on this as though the sounds got a new supercharger.
What do you think?
Great demo Woody. To me it sounds wonderful and shows the MODX is a great instrument that comes with a DX7 included. It touches greatly on the past and the now. Great interface and accessible pricing. Yamaha should thank you for showing your public what it can do. I bought one months ago, not in the least due to your demonstrations. Please keep those coming from time to time. It feels like it actually is the perfect instrument for you! Cheers and have a great weekend!
thanks for the kind words! makes me wonder how a dedicated DX7/FM reissue would do sales-wise, not the reface, but a proper pro instrument updated for 2019. I guess we have the montage, but something more focused...
Woody Piano Shack a DX7 clone++ sounds like something Behringer would do, once they finish recreating all the Roland and Korg analog gear from 30-40 years ago 😁
Maybe B. could just pack a new , backwards compatible, FM (plus filter?) engine in the Deepmind chassis and target the same USD 500-1000 price range as that synth and stuff like MX / Juno / Kross...
I was trying to emulate Toto - AfrIca synth brass on Dexed, and then got the notification for this video...... glad I clicked on the video, now I'm more inspired thanks to it..... Nice video!!
Dexed does a great job 90 - 95% of the time. There are still issues with the EG that need sorting but the sounds are there!
There's also just the factory "ROM1A" factory presets all over the internet. Cut out the middle man and just get the original sounds that way
check this out, the result is spot on ua-cam.com/video/spbxB16_MzY/v-deo.html
You might want to check Dom’s video on just that ua-cam.com/video/spbxB16_MzY/v-deo.html
@@synthverkstad2093 only problem with fully recreating the sound using FM is the sound is 2 CS80s double tracked with slightly different settings. it seems hard to recreate. The closest thing I've heard in FM is the brass preset from Toto's official sysex patches made in 1986.
One thing I like to do with the FM-X on the MODX is creating 2 patches with slight differences in many parameters and pan them Left/Right for huge sounds
It doesn’t have to be hard panning
And of course you have extra operators and waveforms to make richer sounds, as well as Parameter Automations and that’s without touching FX, some of which are really, really good
TOTALLY started bobbing my head when you hit the Brass 2...love the Level 42!
To see the same joy on your face as was on mine when I started playing the FM sounds on my MODX makes me so happy Woody. My first synth was a DX-7 when I was 18 and I was taken straight back to 1984. BTW, love Level 42 also. Thanks mate.
11:32 "I used to hate this cheesy dx7 e piano sound, but now is one of my favorites." (Woody, 2019)
some meme potential there perhaps...
P
Dx7 e piano Cheasy ? Propably the most iconic dx sound 🤪 lots of the other sounds were Cheasy tho. I joined the fm synthesis with th arival of the TX-802 an I can sum the fm synthesis in under 10 usable sounds all the rest was pretty much junk and thin sounding. Helped a lot to run it thru a TC Chorus tho
Pedro Sales Jr Never stopped loving it. I use Dexed on iPad and Mac and it as close to Dx7 as possible
The sounds have a completely new lease of life on the MODX. Great video
Great sounds, particularly at 12:00, amazing that one patch can sounds so powerful. I’ve been stuck for hours layering various DX7 sounds and combining with the Modx effects.
'Fields of Gold' was Freakin Brilliant.
Just found this and you inspired me to download the original patches for my Arturia DX7 V. After only about two minutes I figured out how to import them directly into the DX7 V and I was able to follow along with every patch. Wow that was fun. Now I gotta listen to som Toto. Thanks!
Fantastic! You and Dr Mix sold me on the MODX, what a great synth.
Love it! I love FM so much! Great playing :-)
You look so happy!
that's what playing music is all about, right? :)
@European Defenderman
I also bought MODX the other day. I am happy too.
Every single pad just gave me nostalgia!
Absolutely no need to apologise for your playing Woody. It was fine (and enjoyable to listen to).
A lot of references of Howard's Jones music 👍👏 my favorite 🥰
Great demo, thanks a lot 😉
Great performance, Woody. A genuine joy to listen to your playing.
His cover of Africa definitely beats Weezers, lol. I like the classic DX7 sounds too, those sounds are part of music history, like it or not analog hipsters!
Man...are your riffing level 42! Class!! Definitely subscribing now! Roland FA 08 user but fascinated by the uniqueness of Modx series..gives a great Vince decola sound
Great video and great show 👏❤😊
I love these FM presets !! And now my kurzweil Forte can read the sysex yamaha (no converter needed ;-) ) It's fantastic and it's free !!!
Hey Woody! you're like a kid in front of a Christmas tree!!! Thanks for this video!!! The FM isn't dead!!! ;)
I love those sounds and it's also fun to program your own presets
I just love my DX7!
12:14 is everything Woody. Very nice.
Thank you for doing this. Thinking of getting my first synth, and this is in my price range. Watching lots of videos about the MODX, and this is what I needed to hear.
10:54 Wooooow... Marillion’s ‘Kayleigh’!! I was wondering which song this chords remind me. Well done Woody! 😄👌
Woody is so right at 5:59 min. Velocity impact on FM sounds is like "magic"
The dynamics come from the harmonic overtones that increase with amplitude controlled by keyboard velocity. A core benefit of Frequency Modulation.
Beautiful video. Thank you from Germany
Nice bit of marrillion with the e-piano patch, works quite well. The reverb really warms up the sound. Korg have made their own little DX-7 the Volca FM but sadly it has a design oversight with the lack of velocity on it’s midi implementation.
no velocity is no go, these patches would be nothing without the dynamics
And 3-note polyphony
One of the best "FM" tutorial I've seen in this channel and the great enthusiasm of Mr. Woody, makes it a kind of anthem :-)
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SOUND FROM THE DX7 IS THE TUBULAR BELL PATCH THAT ENYA USED IN SOME OF HER BEST SONGS !!!
Haha. I had a DX7 years ago. Just brought a RefaceDX because of the fond memories i had. Now I realise just how 80’s the DX was. Just ordered a MODX but will steal clear of the DX7 for now.
Reading the title of your video I have just one word for what came out: PERFECT! 🎹🙌
Nothing like Brass 1 from the DX7 factory presets ❤️
As always . . . I love your enthusiasm and playing (and cool color-changing light). Thanks for another fun video!
aahh that was cool - i just did a live comparison with my DX7 while playing the video.. the MODX seems to be pretty identical to the DX .. nice job! :)
Great video Woody! Sounds Amazing when you play the old presets from the DX7.
amazing synth modx! i love it 👌❤
Made me realise how powerful my old Yamaha TX7 module was.. Thanks Woody. Hope your doing well my friend. Just bought ROland TD27 Kit. Shame I cant get it to you to review, its a real gamechanger kit for Roland.
always been fascinated by the v/drums, congrats on your kit!
I like your custom shirt..... looks very cool..... tnx for the performance.... EdA
A fellow Howard jones fan there.. :)
Exellent demo. MODX8 user here.. :)
Absolutely great video! Loved this! Brings back memories of when you uploaded the original DX7 video . I have one so it’s so relatable when you say it’s warm and fat, hell yea! Thanks for sharing this Woody!
Thanks Woody, this sounded great! I bought a MODX based partially on your videos and for the compatibility with the DX 7. Can’t wait until OS ver 2.
cool!
i remember when the ads jingle in italian television were played with the DX7. very recognizable sound
Miamm!! Great idea to import those fabulous presets from DX7, with modern effects!! It's amazing!!
Hide and Seek was the first tune I ever learned back in the 80s . Good work Woody
cool, one of my early tunes too!
FM-X with its 8 operators and multiple OSC waveforms + the sliders in the MODX = big scope for custom synth organ sounds
Lovely, great Demo, Thanks Woody.
Smoke on the water...good choice!
Love the MODX. it's FULLTINES are really 10/10.
So great!! Can't wait to get to importing!!! Thanks!
Stoneage instruments would even be more nostalgic. The most developed electronic instruments, and those synth-cracks are still stuck in the 70s. Unbelievable🙈
Amazing footage Woody. So basically this ModX6 is way better than the original Yamaha DX7 that I have. I like my DX7 but want to incorporate layered chords /add a rhythm & beat so this ModX will do all my
DX7 does but much more. Might sell my DX7 as it’s a bit of an antique now…
your video's are Awesome Woody!
Game changer video!
Fantastic advert for this.
I’m loving my MODX. I know folks miss the aftertouch but I don’t really notice it that much until I wanna rip a synth lead solo and get some vibrato while my left hand is busy comping on another keyboard. I just slap a bit of delayed vibrato on and that’s almost as good. Cant go wrong for the price ladies and...er, probably just gentlemen.
probably! any ladies here?
from 13m35s ...WOW :) beautiful sound and playing..
I love this side of Woody!
Great video as usual, thanks, Woody!
A very effective demo.....Those new effects are the business - brings these sounds so much more to life. Could you discuss in another video the structure of the Effects engine in he MODX
I need this. Good thing I'm already saving for one. ;)
Geez, this sounds amazing, Gareth!! :-D Trop cool. Cheerio.
I specially loved the "Kayleigh" momentum with that lot of reverb ;-)
I was interested in old arcades emulation in past and since yamacha chips been used there it also tickles my memory
The MODX is fantastic for creating a vintage SEGA orchestra
Great! I have a S90ES with the PLG-150DX board and it has these factory presets also.
yeah. what a great card that is, got the original dx7 chips on it I believe
amazing !!!! love the sound
When I want 'mo DX, I reach for the free Dexed plugin. It sounds freaking awesome too!
I really enjoyed this video Woody. I must get around to loading these into my Montage😊
Marillion, Kelly @ 10:50 !!... Do you remember..
Very "Nosltagic" video.. Thanks Woody..
Thierry LEROY thanks I was racking my brains trying to remember what that track was!
Actually, it's Kaleigh, not Kelly. :-)
You're right!.. But I Didn't check this on Wiki or on my Audio CD.. Title was in my brain..
I'm french, and for me, Kelly sounds like Kaleigh.. Good note anyway!..
Magnifique chanson. Bien vu Thierry...
@@RhettAnderson actually, it’s Kayleigh, not Kaleigh. 😉
Hey Woody, thanks for your inspiration. Just ordered a MODX7 based on your recommendation. Now waiting for it to arrive in time ;-)
best christmas present ever!
those presets sound totally awesome. Keep up the great work and keep on playing the DX7 because it is the best old-school synthesizer out there.
A lot of Howard Jones tunes in there. I loved me some "Dream Into Action" back in the 80's! :)
I think the very first time I heared the DX7 on a record was the Human Leagues 'Life on your own' - the guitar preset. Excellent video again man really enjoyed it .. Might blow of the dust on me old TX816 lol
need to listen to that again, loved that song!
I really enjoyed this video, really good demonstration, i love both the passion and the playing. Have the modx become your favorite synth of the ones you own? Cheers! 👍
COOL !
Brings back memories :)
Great video - I still own the DX7 mk1 and a DX7II-FD. I also have the MODX6 and the DX7 patches I ported across to it sound amazing - far more authentic than in any VST in my opinion and actually better than the preset 6-op patches already in the MODX; gotta use original SYSEX patches ;-) The DX7 keybed is legendary (albeit mechanically very noisy!) but the MODX6 keybed is great, too. Try layering the same DX7 patches and pan them L&R, perhaps with a small amount of detune. So thick and lush - like a DX5 or DX1 :-)
So go ahead, layer 16 together, I would love to hear how that sounds!
That was fun to watch.
It’s funny, I didn’t like FM sounds 35 years ago, and this video reminded md that I still don’t. Cool video though 😃
that is funny!
Excellent. That steam train DX7 patch is on a Miles Davis track from ‘85 called “MD1 / What’s on your Mind”... Can’t think of many records that feature that particular preset, but that’s one of them 🙂
that's fascinating, miles davis, who woulda thought it!!
The name of the album it’s on is “You’re Under Arrest“, it’s a great record if you can imagine Miles Davis in an 80s context… There is a lot of DX7 and Oberheim OB-Xa involved 😀
Wow! Prompted by this very conversation I’ve just pushed play on this album a few minutes ago to revisit it, and I kid you not… I have also just heard Ref’s Whistle (as well as a guest appearance of Sting yelling in French) on that first track... I had previously thought it was just any generic whistle until I heard it again just now... another point to the DX 😂
Nice that this has dedicated DSP for the FM-X . My Kronos will do slightly less FM polyphony than the MODX, much less than the Montage, but then leaving nothing else for other engines. Kronos allows direct importing of DX series .syx files and auditioning patches without loading into memory first, for building easy user banks from multiple files. A used Montage looks more attractive to me than a new MODX, for the double FM polyphony, a pro keybed and a lot of other things. Waiting for them to come down a little more.
I use an FS1R for DX7 sounds. Also has the FM-X engine.
HI Xp, yeah, if you know me then you would know that I would also spring for the used flagship model
The difference is, even the FM-X engine also have a range of extra features to ad to the DX7 patches, there's a lot more possible things with the Korg MOD7 engine, importing a basic DX-7 patch is only like 5% of what you can do with it. The MOD7 is like a SY77 on steroids and Acid at the same time :) And remember a DX7 had only 16 notes polyphonic, wich was actually alot at that time. Remember how wild it was, you could get 32 notes by adding a TX-7 in midi overflow mode
On my Roland Fantom Xa I programmed aftertouch to D-Beam controller so when I move my head close to it, it gives me the aftertouch effect :)) bit more expressive than knob and I don't have to free up my hand for it. I know it probably doesn't belong here but I just thought mentioning it :) ... Anyway. Thank you for this inspiring video. I'm enjoying these sound with Dexed, which I discovered thanks to you Woody. Thank you!
You can assign the knob to an expression pedal though
That said, having cut my teeth with Waldorf synths, I miss aftertouch every single time I play without it
beautiful, no such thing as too much reverb :P
You’re awesome Woody...keep up the great content 👍🏽👍🏽
And yes Queen did use the DX7, do check out the One Vision studio video!
I think Brian May used it as a MIDI controller for the Emulator's Macato Strings.
Solid work Woody
Great demo. But I need to know the name of the song played at the end of the minute 18 at the flutes demo. I have heard this song a lot of years ago and I'm trying to finding it for years. Even I remember that it was used in a men fragrance tv commercial from Camel. Thanks and greetings.
Would you please compare sound of Yamaha PSR SX900 with Yamaha MODX? There are not many people who own both of them and that’s why there is not video that compares sound of Yamaha’s arranger keyboard with MODX or Montage. Thanks in advance!
i'm not convinced if that's a relevant comparison, two completely different categories of keyboards that you choose between based on the purpose, use case and features, rather than the sounds...?
Yes sir, they are two completely different category of keyboards, but it would be nice to compare the quality of sound between the two. There are plenty of videos that compare MODX and Montage, or PSR SX900 and Genos, or PSR SX900 vs Tyros 5 etc. But I couldn’t find MODX vs PSR and I would like to hear the difference in sound. I didn’t mean to compare features, but samples of MODX piano and PSR piano, strings, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, sax etc. For example between MODX and Montage I would never hear the difference in sound on blind test:
m.ua-cam.com/video/8ob4o2xEH6Y/v-deo.html
But I hear the difference between the Yamaha PSR SX900 and Tyros 5:
m.ua-cam.com/video/JAoy7N2AMT4/v-deo.html
Or Yamaha Yamaha PSR SX900 vs Korg Pa1000:
m.ua-cam.com/video/8VaFqOawv7s/v-deo.html
Or two the most expensive arrangers Yamaha Genos vs Korg Pa4X:
m.ua-cam.com/video/0YwAarhuH2I/v-deo.html
I had to decide what to buy Yamaha PSR SX900 or MODX6 (I would like to have both of them) and I ordered PSR SX900 (I’m still waiting for it). But it doesn’t mean I gave up on MODX. So would you please sir compare just sound of instruments between PSR and MODX, if it’s not the problem of course.
The mk1 dx7, the only synth that lives in my living room.
Deja vu 1980's video game sounds.
@Mexlycan Lobo From arcade machines to old PC sound cards (like the Sound Blaster and the AdLib) and even the world's "most famous" SEGA Genesis video game console.
By the way, they were all made in FM synthesis.
