My family moved to San Jo from Texas in the 70’s. my pops said back then its was about your Barrio. the north and south thing was only in the system. It hit the street in the 80’s and was full blown banging by the 90’s . My pop never did state time so he never got involved with north or south. My uncle did state time and got involved into the mix .

In the 50s and early 60s, LA and SoCal mexican inmates looked at themselves as the real gangsters, as the real criminals. NorCal mexican inmates were in-fact seen and treated differently by SoCal inmates. Not because they were from "the north", but because they were from what SoCal inmates considered "lamer" areas. But not only were NorCal inmates treated that way, but even certain SoCal inmates from less respected cities/varrios were treated the same way. So yes, the break-off and new organization was started by inmates from SoCal BECAUSE of the mistreatment. The organization from the 50s unfortunately got sloppy upholding their original purpose of giving ALL raza the same respect and safety that every brown man was entitled to behind bars. Yes, Norte 14 and Sur 13 werent a thing yet, but the SoCal "ego" has always been there. And its that SoCal ego that led to less respected SoCal inmates and less respected NorCal inmates breaking off to start the other organization. Both organizations funtioned on yards for years, sure, with a few issues and violent conflicts, but alot of OGs give 1 incident the credit for the all-out war and hatred. Northern movement started in 1965 with guys from San Diego, Little Valley, WS Clanton and only as far North as Bakersfield. Basically a 2nd "Sureno" set of Southern born RAZA but it wasn't initially North vs. South. There were members of La EME at the time from San Jose, Hayward, Sacramento and all over Northern Cali but no NF members came from up north til 1968. Wasn't til the war of1972 after NF took out Chayanne in Chino that North and South was segregated by correctional facilities in 1973. In 1975 the line between North and South became the clear status quo. NF members born in the south defected or were taken out by NF and EME. NF pushed out Southern born members and all the bosses were from the North going forward. Sad that the guys from SD, Oxnard and all the southern cities with ties to NF were now targeted by La EME and their own NF regimental soldiers.

Im 48 years old and what trips me out is how the sides changed as far as stereotypes. Im from SoCal and in the 80s and 90s....almost no cholos spoke spanish down here. They mostly considered themselves americans who were mexican. They mostly looked down on paisas. Back then the paisas coudlnt join most gangs. And southsiders made fun of northerners for being...paisas. Now in 2024, most cholos down south...speak spanish. Half of them are paisas. But up north...most of the nortenos are Americanized cholos. The southsiders we have down here now...would have been clowned by the southsiders of the 80s and 90s.

Next Day seeing this’ I did time in Soledad in the mid 80’s - LA car’s we’re there - a few’ OC - SD - central had a couple light weight riots with the Northern’ I went to N-yard for to finish my time 4 years or so - anyways- we SUR out numbers everybody - 20-30 SUR to about 4-5 NOR’ per wings - no riots - we gave respect to the Northern’ because we outnumbered them’ a few one on one - but the rumors from Sur coming from other prisons was at Tracy the North was jumping on any and everyone coming there from Southern Califa’s - so that probably the time frame and location of Northern started this dangerous Northeno’s attacking Sureno’s to today - ? We gave them very generous respect’ but apparently they did not in kind’

Northern movement started in 1965 with guys from San Diego, Little Valley, WS Clanton and only as far North as Bakersfield. Basically a 2nd "Sureno" set of Southern born RAZA but it wasn't initially North vs. South. There were members of La EME at the time from San Jose, Hayward, Sacramento and all over Northern Cali but no NF members came from up north til 1968. Wasn't til the war of1972 after NF took out Chayanne in Chino that North and South was segregated by correctional facilities in 1973. In 1975 the line between North and South became the clear status quo. NF members born in the south defected or were taken out by NF and EME. NF pushed out Southern born members and all the bosses were from the North going forward. Sad that the guys from SD, Oxnard and all the southern cities with ties to NF were now targeted by La EME and their own NF regimental soldiers.
@@never2much9g it’s some of the stories I heard but I definitely hear different stuff from members who were born in the 80’s and different from guys from the 70’s. People internalize how they felt as well. Definitely would love to hear what you have heard as well. Lots of holes in the stories but them early days were rough for sure

Im 48 years old and what trips me out is how the sides changed as far as stereotypes. Im from SoCal and in the 80s and 90s....almost no cholos spoke spanish down here. They mostly considered themselves americans who were mexican. They mostly looked down on paisas. Back then the paisas coudlnt join most gangs. And southsiders made fun of northerners for being...paisas. Now in 2024, most cholos down south...speak spanish. Half of them are paisas. But up north...most of the nortenos are Americanized cholos. The southsiders we have down here now...would have been clowned by the southsiders of the 80s and 90s.

From what i know, the whole north/south thing really kicked off because of 1 incident which had a major ripple effect that caused a lasting divide between the 2 groups. But who knows, that could be false information.
They were targeted because they were from farm towns. Anything above LA they called them farmers and were victimized

I did time in Soledad in the mid 80’s - LA car’s we’re there - a few’ OC - SD - central had a couple light weight riots with the Northern’ I went to N-yard for to finish my time 4 years or so - anyways- we SUR out numbers everybody - 20-30 SUR to about 4-5 NOR’ per wings - no riots - we gave respect to the Northern’ because we outnumbered them’ a few one on one - but the rumors from Sur coming from other prisons was at Tracy the North was jumping on any and everyone coming there from Southern Califa’s - so that probably the time frame and location of Northern started this dangerous Northeno’s attacking Sureno’s to today - ?
We gave them very generous respect’ but apparently they did not in kind’
