This is a diplomatic embassy car. This is a 60's era CEO's car. This is a high government officials car. This is absolutely pure class. This would have been parked in front of some very expensive hotels, or mansions in the day. Very beautiful. This is the embodiment of the old adage, "They don't make them like they used to". Thank you.

I think it was often called the Adenauer model since Konrad Adenauer served as the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963 so this is what he was often seen in.

In Germany this car is commonly referred to as the "Adenauer-Mercedes" as this was Konrad Adenauer's, our first Bundeskanzler, first state limousine. Adenauer asked Mecedes later for a car with an extended chassis and a sliding roof.

I worked for Mercedes-Benz Canada during the early 1970s. The side windows on your 300 were removable so that "royalty" or politicians in the rear seat could see and be seen by the masses on the sidewalk.
We sold and maintained a model 600, the "Grosser Mercedes", prized possession of the manufacturer of the Ski-Doo snowmobile. It was even longer and more imposing than your 300, with beautiful but understated interior trim. Its pneumatic suspension suffered in cold Canadian winters, and that fact led to this particular car spending its winters indoors.

I almost bought a car like this one back in the 1970's. Instead, I got the SE coupe which was more sporty looking. At the time these cars were quite inexpensive, around $5-10,000. Today, if you could find a 300D in convertible form [they made a few of them] a restored example would probably cost you several hundreds of thousands of dollars!

My mother broke her water in that car (my father’s car), yup I did that. I have that vehicle now; same make, model, color and year! Has a very distinct Mercedes purrr to the engine and cloud 9 ride as it glides down the highway. The car series is nicknamed “Adenauer” after the first chancellor of post WWII Germany , Konrad Adenauer, who loved the car so much. Iv believed he owed 2-3 over his lifetime. The original Blaupunkt radio also comes with a short wave radio which is fun to listen to on cloudy days. The car has an interesting history, it was originally owned by the nephew of Milton Hershey, of Hershey, PA, yes that Hershey guy 🍫. Milton never had any children in life and his fortune was left to his nephew and some others His nephew in turn gifted the car to his GF who drove it out to CA where it sat beside a mecinhis family.hanic’s shop with a lien on it for work done on it. My dad saw it one day in 1972 and bought it from him.

For the diesel variant of the 300, there is a control knob on the dashboard which when pulled out controls a rod/cable/switch. The rod/cable connects to the fuel pump and valve, which allows the engine to start. The switch, at the first position, activates the glow plugs, if necessary. If it is warm enough to disallow the use of the glow plugs, you pull past the first stage to the second stage, which engages the starter. As a side note, on the opposite side of the dashboard [to the driver's left side of the steering column], there is a chrome shrouded opening about the size of a silver dollar, behind which is a coil that glows along with the engine glow plugs, so you can see when they are heated. There is also a manual fast idle which may be used for while the engine warms to operating temperature. The way to turn off the engine is to push the knob back in. This turns off the fuel supply. Yes, the engine will run without the key being turned on, or even in the ignition switch, once started. The ignition controls the electricity for the glow plugs, as well as the starter and other electricals in the car. The engine, being a diesel, will run without electricity, as it has a mechanical fuel pump and injectors.

I had a black one with blood red, leather interior. You can recline the front seats flat and make a giant bed. All the windows rolled down and all of the quarter windows come out nothing like it. 300d it was a small D so you didn’t confuse it with a diesel. Order from Mercedes dealer in the early 70s for $750 broke down and I sold it for 500

In 1968 my uncle bought one of the early versions into Australia. In those days Mercedes were much rarer on our roads and generally bought by doctors, lawyers, etc… I know he had a 220S at one stage as he only owned Mercs for about 15 years, but I’m not sure which one he had in 1968. I remember it had the vertical speedometer flanked horizontally by gauges similar to the ones in your 300. I was 7 at the time so the memory is hazy, but I did enjoy driving in its opulent luxury. The first person I thought of riding in this car back-in-the-day was Elizabeth Taylor and then the Pope popped into my head. What a combination.

MB has a few cars that are never outdated looking at them. I also love the 1966 E class 6.2 sel, especially the one featured in the movie The Hangover. This 300D is wow. Currently I am driving a 1991 NSX but it's another kind of wow factor. Lol

      "1966 E class 6.2 sel" - sorry, no such car. You're no doubt thinking of a 1966 S Class 300 SEL 6.3.

I had a friend who had one of these in the late 60's. It was chocolate brown but it did not have an engine. All we could do was sit in it and imagine going somewhere. We were in high school in Big Rapids, Michigan and it was a major thrill just to sit in it. The interior was in great condition and the back seat was truly amazing, extremely long like the video said. I moved to Texas so I have not idea whatever became of that car.

Gorgeous car. Years ago my oldest brother had a Mercedes limousine class of roughly the year he was born (late 1970-ies). Everyone in my family are tall except my mom and we all comfortably could stretch our legs in that car.

Lot's of memories here... We had one of these awesome M-B 300's when I went to middle and high school and my father's car appeared absolutely identical to this one. In fact, it's possible that was his car. I rode to my high school grad dance in the back of that car! It has seen better days, that's for sure. We kept that car clean, polished and waxed to perfection on it's factory black Lacquer paint back in the day. We referred to it as "The Beast From Stuttgart". Ours was still mint when my dad traded it in for a new 1976 Cadillac Eldorado. Then that one was his last car...

My father had the same Mercedes 300 D in the UK. Right hand drive and light blue. It was a beauty. Did you find the leather envelope that the rear quarter light windows would go into when you took them out ? It would then be put in the boot. Lovely to see one of these again, they are pretty rare.

The Adenauer Mercedes (named after Konrad Adenauer, chancellor of Germany) is a true beauty. I do not understand why you would keep such a car in a basement without cover. The previous paint jobs do not do the car justice. Great what you guys were able to do with the car! It needs a owner that brings the car back to its old glory and drives it’

German chancellor Konrad Adenauer and his friend, the French president general Charles de Gaulle, fit well in the back of this beauty.
