The end of the Borgward Group is a shameful story. The Government of the state of Bremen (where Borgwards were built) claimed that Borgward was insolvent, and then effectively compulsorily acquired the company. They then side-stepped all schemes which might have saved the firm, putting the cars out of production and selling up the assets. All creditors were paid in full, proving that the company had never been insolvent after all - but governments that act improperly are always above the law. Borgward died a broken man in 1963. There is some evidence that other car makers were involved in the plot to destroy Borgward, but the full truth has not yet been revealed.
What a sad story! I think these cars looked awesome..
You wanna know ? These Cars were to modern and to good for the other German Car Producer . They standing behind this Complott against Borgward . Sorry for my bad English .
BMW also blocked their steal quota thereby eliminating the competition. They were great..and cheap...and successfully sold over the world. I rescued a 2dr sedan in New Zealand...sold it to a young guy who became a really good friend.
Sounds like a German version of Tucker!
You build the best and make it cheap, you look for trouble..
Certainly worth restoring such a rare piece. Replacing the floor and pans is a regular part of restoration. Doesn’t seem too rotten or rusted through otherwise. And the engine turns.
Great points!
Do not wreck. Restore
Just looked up prices for Isabella Coupés in Germany (my home base). Roughly 65k Euro for a perfect car, 40+k for a very good one and about 30k for a decent one (rate to the USD is more or less 1:1). This should make a restoration of this fine vehicle worthwhile. ;-)
If someone is going to restore this treasure, would you please give us the link to it?
Die Schilder im Kofferraum sind alte Zollkennzeichen vom Stuttgarter Zoll am Flughafen. Hoffentlich findet sich ein Fachmann zur Restaurierung😊
Great Job Boy's
Greetings from Germany
Holger 👋
Totally worth restoring. It is an extremely rare car even in its current condition, and there have been worse Borgward cars that got restored back to life.
I think the transformation you’ve achieved is actually pretty incredible. Borgwards were beautiful, well engineered cars that were also a really good value for their time, it’s nice to see this one getting some love and I hope someone does a restoration on it… Although prices on these in good condition are in the $20,000.00 range, someone did an EV resto mod on one, and the style is so cool it would be a great project. I can’t wait to see the video on the Saab Sonnet in the background, and I’m excited to see what’s coming up!
So many cool cars coming!
looking forward to the Isetta!! @@WDDetailing
The prices actually go up to 40,000 euros
The Borgward Isabella Coupe is a rare .machine. Well worth restoration. Looking good RJ, thanks for posting this!😍
The engine was a 1500 and rated at ,75 bhp tfe sport version was 90bhp
For sure this car deserves to be restored, floor panels and other parts can be done easily by an expert in car restoration. It's a part of sad history of car makers, as already described. Nice result, greetings from Brazil!
Take care!
Borgward’s are fantastic, full stop. Btw the licence plate is a German plate for cars that are exported. Z stands for Zoll (Customs)
It’s amazing how many people, here criticise a car they know absolutely nothing about. Borgward’s are hot property here in Europe, definitely worth restoring this gorgeous Isabella.
We owned both a green Isabella 4 door sedan and a white Arabella De Luxe in the 60's. Learnt to drive in the Arabella. Our neighbour owned a white Coupe which as a 10 year old child I loved. Feeling nostalgic.
Such a beautiful little car. I can't believe somebody woild just put it away and let it go to seed. It would have been a lot less work to restore it id it had been kept clean in storage.
Such a beautiful little car. I can't believe somebody woild just put it away and let it go to seed. It would have been a lot less work to restore it id it had been kept clean in storage.
Other interesting cars in the barn: Opel Rekord, BMW 700
Had those on a Vanagon we bought on European delivery program
She must look great fully restored. Please show her to us when it is done.
RJ you got this. Bring it back to life.
it is a beautiful car beatiful lines and look like was buil like a rock
Despite outward appearances this car is actually really in decent shape! These cars always need floors and inner/outer rockers. It's just a fact of life with them. Once you get those taken care of you have a beautiful car. Plus they look so good in black with that red interior. Usually they have this huge chrome bezel for the headlights. I've not seen the headlight setup on this car before and much prefer it! Someone will get an excellent project with this car and you've really brought out its beauty!
There were different ones - Hella and Bosch. Look at an older model - they mostly got the smaller ones. But both fit. It would be nice to see the suspension of the rear radius arms, though...
I have a Dinky toy model of this car. They stopped making these cars in 1961. It was held in high esteem in Germany. It was almost up there alongside Mercedes-Benz in terms of respect...and price. A nice touch is that oval German export plate. A fine detailing job!
Considering the condition of the car, it did a great job cleaning it up ! 👍
You found a rarity! Borgward Isabella, a car from my childhood!
The bodies were 2-door coupe, 2-door sedan and 2-door station-wagon, as far as I know.
Although I was just a kid in the early 60's, I still remember the news pertaining the sad end of the Company.
We had an Isabella when I was a kid too
They actually have gone out and come into business a number of times.....they finally had their third bankruptcy in November of 2022....they are now finally dead........The last Borgward was made in 2020 in China
@@OsbornTramain, I had never heard aboiut that! I always thought Borgward was gone for good since the 60's. Thanks for information.
wasn't there also the Arabella?
You are correct sir
My dad drove one of these beauties when he dated my mom! That was before I was born! Look how good it still looks. Give it a lot of love and a date with a dent-ist and you will be amazed what becomes of it!
This is a nice car; definitely worth making a daily driver. Get over to Metal Mart and replace the floor with new metal then hit the front end with Flood to hold what paint is there. The engine's freed up so I'd go for it.
Beautiful design, well worth restoring.
A treasure trove of rare vehicles, quite the find!
this beauty needs tons of work to make it road worthy again, but i would take the extra step to do so. but the more i see the floors the more i'm like: this could be used as parts to be honest... well i hope the owner will fix it after all, you make it shine once again as best as you could!
What an awesome car! Definitely needs to be saved!
Cool car. The lines are elegant.
When I was 10 years old in 1967 a mechanic in my father's company finished his night shift at 7.oo in the morning. He was driving an Isabella. In light green. He drove me to school almost every morning. I still remember this car very well. The mechanic was a smoker. What impressed me at the time was the cigarette lighter in the Isabella. Not this lighter that you push in and then pops up after a while. But a lighter that somehow stuck to the dashboard and then began to glow visibly. Memories of a now old man. The Borgward-Story..... amazing. I suppose it is available in german only. But. Maybe that Americans can watch it with subtitles. All the best for this fantastic car!
The Isabella was one of German postwar audiences dream cars
Half of why I watch you guys is the classics you pull and the condition they are in. Keep up the good work and I hope to see most of those cars this came from, here being cleaned!
Definitely worth saving
I've not watched this yet, but I'm soooo happy, to see you do this car....one of my absolute favorite cars, its so good looking! An the name is so cool!
The hardest part would be to find interior for the Isabella. It is extremely hard to find parts for borgward and when, you can pay in gold.
To the question regarding the plate, this is an old plate from the customs office in Germany to ship cars from Germany to another country country. Last plate was issued 1988.
I've not had too much trouble getting parts, I've had several of these. I could be speaking too soon, though. Mine needs rockers and floor, too.
They are available from Germany
i have an old customer (sell car parts) who only works on Borgward, holy 50s! He build coupes, and coupes to cabriolets.....great, too great to stand. Borgward is since tons of years not anymore! Great video !!!!! look at that shape!!!!!! incredible!!! greatings from germany over the sea!!!!!!! and i got an friend who worked for Ravaglioli, italian garage lifts etc...his dad was race car driver for Borgward in the 60s.....greetings to stefan, hope you read it! Great guy!!!!!!!! the best for selling garage-equipments!!!!!!!!
Where is the borgward expert??
Brother Man... I love the commitment you've gotten and shown ... in all that has been seen through the past and present. It gives close realisation that the contents are eye openers and make us believe we better do for our car babies else 3 decades later once we're gone we'd be dismayed and shocked to see what our bloodlines might just do to them than cherishing and enjoying them like we did in a heartfelt manner.
😅щзз
DEFINETLY restorable it would be such a magnificent piece of history!
My family had a Bogward. It's a great German car.
In the right hands I think this car can be restored.👍🚘
I've seen many rare cars but never this one. The design is incredible. What a beautiful body ( the car lol). As far as a parts car I don't know cause I don't think there is another one. Hopefully someone will find interest and restore it. Once restored I'm sure it's value is going to be up there. Beautiful car. Great job cleaning it up.
I believe it’s savable fix it up,and put it in a car show. It’s a classic car
Those rear taillights are beautiful!
Well done boys!!!!!! You are the best!!!!! The borgward was a very good engineerd German car.
Thank you!
Super Video Thank you Respect Good Job 😚😍🥰❤️👍👌🤟
Great job guys. Another incredible find.
Good.job cool car
This guy has a knack for bringing back cars to their old glory, enjoy his work and expertise with sutomobiles❤
The car is worthwhile restoring , considering the year and after you guys cleaned it it shines plus the car itself is rare.
Great job on a very interesting and rare car. Definitely worth restoring.
Thanks Guys for another great detail!
a borgward is always worth saving no matter how bad the condition it is in! you don’t know what the knob is you pulled out of the dash? it’s a cigarette lighter!
Any young guy with energy who knows how to weld can save this car. Yes it is worth saving. Most economical would be an owner who knows how to weld and fix things. I love the solid action of those piano key toggle switches on the dash.
The license plate is a german one for exporting cars before 1988. The word "Hauptzollamt" means the same as CBP (U.S. Customs and border protection) in the US. So this car has been exported from Germany before 1988.
You guys in the usa certainly know how to do up cars❤
Looks 100 times better looks great did a great job don't worry about it 👍
Just rinsing off THE MEASURABLE THICK layer of dust brought back the regal beauty of the auto!👍❤️ Doug
Hi DW DETAILING, Greetings, as in all your videos, works with real Automotive Jewels, time to enjoy your video, your friend Oscar.
Acho que trata-se de um belo clássico, muito original e que merece uma boa restauração.
These are considered very collectible “ Darlings “ for German Car aficionados! They are rare because of lack of parts for them. I always wanted one of the convertible models from the 50s. Now, a very good one commands a high value price!
Yes there are no parts for this car, the factory was sold to a mexican guy and everything even the last bolt sold to México. In México only last a few years and everything was lost.
Not exactly, it was sold to to the Mexican government ,I have a friend that goes there to buy parts.
Good job!👍👍👍👍👍
My first car was a Borgward Isabella 2 door sedan in white. It was 1960 also but looked alot different.
That's a cool car. I hope someone restore it.
Absolutely worth saving,,the floor pans can be replaced , door panels can all be restored, the body is in excellent shape besides its a very rare car ,,you guys always do a great job,,
Félicitations à vous car elle sera magnifique une fois terminée
Oh my goodness! All diese schönen, deutschen und seltenen Autos 👏🤩💕
It's been many, many years since I've seen one of those 😮😮😮
Interesting little car. So is the Saab Sonnett. I saw it in the background, that little yellow car. Someone like Jay Leno or Wayne Carini needs to restore this car.
Jay Leno came to our Borgward meet,he wasn't interested
To the right enthusiast, definitely worth saving 👍🇦🇺
Love the old american cars theres something special the way they look
Rare; much sought after. Well worth restoring.
Awesome job as always gentlemen, you are looking at situations like I do, maybe not the result you wanted, but much improved!!!
That car is such a classic it would be well worth the money and effort to have it fully restored to it's original condition when it was made!
The condition is actually not bad at all. I have seen much. Much worse being restored. Certainly worth saving this beauty.
Fantastic job you are a young professional!!!
Rare and valuable car 😮 Great clean-up!!
Never seen this car in my life, you should go back and do his other collection they look great
Can’t wait to watch you clean the Sonett. Mine is blue
My self got a Borgward Isabella coupe from that time and it's worth to restore
Now I get it, thanks. I always wondered why you started the bottom and work your way up. 👍
Just for the videos. 😂
It's a Borg-Ward Isabella Coupe 2+2, Quite Rare and well worth the restoration. The 1463cc Engine looks immaculate and is well worth the refresh as it's a #'s match for the chasis. to part it out would be very sad as i read there were only around 10000 2+2 copes built between 1957 and 1961 with 5000 going to the USA and the others to Germany, UK, Australia and other countries
You have done your research. Engines were very well built, the engine should be fine, needs floors as they were one of the first unibodies
I like it, and it definitely has the lines of a karmen this.
Props to you guys do you ever find old coins? The first thing my old boss would do is take out the seats to look 😊
Definitely worth saving. The floor pans have kits or easy fabricators to fix them. Just the normal items---paint, upholstery, engine tune-up, & tires. I've seen worse, but is a rare car find.
I started using the glass cleaner that you guys use and it works great! Very impressed! You guys are great!
After you spray the cleaner on the windows, give them a good scrub with fine steel wool. It really cuts through the cigarette film that is in most old cars. It also adds sparkle to the glass after you polish it.
Never heard of this type car. I can see that the style of it is beautiful
You guys are unbelievable
Save It!! Restore It!! So few examples of a great car!!
A few Borgwards ended up in New Zealand, and my wealthy aunt had an Isabella coupe in pink. My Dad’s family all lost their hair pigment at a very early age, so they all had snowy white hair in their thirties. My aunt died her hair pink to match her car. Would have been pretty outrageous in conservative New Zealand at the time.
This indeed was a beautifull designed Car. I was a child when it was on the market in Germany. Well restored, it has it´s price in the market. It was also available as a convertible - beautifull too. The licence plate found is a German custom plate, requiered when you wanted to export a car and drive it to the shipping yard.
I think the whole car deserves being restored, but the dinosaur skeletons you found should definitely be in the mouseoleum.
Give This Car TOO THE Museum
The Saab Sonett 3 🥰
Abandoned barn looks like it's in very good shape
Cheers, from Oslo Norway. Ken Bruno.
It’s on the old German export plates The oval ones - officially "Ausfuhrkennzeichen" (export plates) - which were used from Nov 07, 1952 until the end of 1988. They were commonly also known als "Zollkennzeichen" (customs plates). They were issued for either exporting a car bought in Germany, or driving a foreign registered car in Germany.
Oh wow! Thank you!
And the word on the official stamp on the "Z" plate (for Zoll = customs) you tried to pronounce is "Hauptzollamt" (literally, main customs office, only we Germans make a compound word of such combinations) in Stuttgart, but it doesn't really make it a normal "Stuttgart" plate, which would have been then and still be rectangular and start with "S-..." The export plates are now rectangular as well (the oval ones were issued until 1988). In a red column on the right side, they state the date until the vehicle is insured in Germany, i.e. until it has to be shipped out of Germany or it cannot be used here legally anymore.
This is a beautiful car that is worth restoring. Quite valuable. Great video.
SAVE. SAVE. SAVE!
go on good work
Borgward was an fantastic made, well ahead of there time.
Very nice
This is one gorgeous car, the brain child of a Dr Carl Borgward. In essence it failed because it was over engineered and was highly reliable. If you look at it's hood ornament, it is an inverted "B", for Borgward. Some parts are interchangeable with Mercedes like the steering coupling, I believe this is true for the clutch plate as well. The Borgward Drivers Club, UK has got quite a bit of spare parts.
Wish I could buy it.
Greetings from Malaysia.
Saving money by using a Wartburg - steering - coupling....
For as rough that it looked. It turned out pretty good.❤
I love the car does it have seats? Definitely worth restoring
That tractor is my dream ride.
Absolute geneuis buddy awesome save it ❤❤
It's fixable just going be hard to find parts. Enjoy your work keep them coming
