This yacht spoiled me. Ever since I watched the walk through, no other appeals as much to me at any price. The layout, woodwork to die for and interior decor have done me in. After watching lots of yachting videos, I love explorer yachts the most. They look so ready for adventure on the outside and Nordhavns especially are like heaven on the inside. I really am in awe of the people who can visualize and build such beautiful, complex and functional creations. So much talent and fine taste.

I was in Adak back in 1963 on the USS Salmon SS-573 we stopped for diesel fuel when it was a USN Naval air station then we went on patrol to monitor Russian launched missiles ... we were ten (10) miles off of Kamchatka when President Kennedy died we thought we were going to war for sure. Then we had to go back to Adak to get more fuel to return to San Diego. The trip took ten days to get there to Adak and we hit force 9 weather with fifty foot high waves. Never forget it watching your video brought all of those memories back.

Years ago I was a commercial diver based out of Duncan BC on Vancouver Island, I made the trip north to Alaska many many times with our live aboard and dive barge.
It was always hurry up and get to the job site , on every trip I would say to my self “ to do this on a nice yacht and lots of time would be a dream come true “
Unfortunately I have to work to live.

It must feel acomplishing. Not only to build something so Grand, but then to navigate it through the different element's without any major problems. That really speaks of the craftsmanship, & engineering that you guys put into the yachts that you build. I stand amazed. Congradulations or a job well done!

Wonderful running commentary, I enjoyed your trip as well. Thanks. It's nice to see how a trip on a boat that size would be. We've all seen boats like that and wondered what it is like. I found your explanation of navigating, with amounts of fuel, water and all the other things you needed very interesting. Great photography too, Thanks again.

Great story. I agree the COG seemed high, but there must be magic happening with such a low draft. Very curious about the stabilizer systems as a beam sea would tend to pitch that shape. Perhaps thats why you had to head further north. Beautiful boat, beautiful finish, and love the state of the art nav and engineering. Wow!!

We do have a 35feet Trawler in our family, but I will never be able to own a boat such as this one or, I suppose, none of Nordhavn boats in range ...but , I never watched a video longer than 5/6 minutes on UA-cam , and for this one, I wished it never ended, and when the end came, I felt like "i was with you" on the boat, for the whole duration of the trip! The editing, the musics, the camera angles etc, were really amazingly well done . Yes, If I would win the lottery...I know for SURE, I would buy a Nordhavn .

The "owner" of this boat you see in the video won't be enjoying it. He tried to swerve paying the proper import taxes on the thing and when he got caught, tried to dodge paying for the yacht altogether so he couldn't be held legally liable for the import duty and the potential criminal charges. The man tried to destroy the company that built the boat, failed, and had to sell it.

I imagine they're mostly happy days when you're a billionaire with a yacht. You simply shell out and have others deal with the problems, logistics and maintenance.

i too have watched this a few times; what a great story, the yacht handled magnificently, the crew were obviously amazing and the owners must be so proud. The Chef......where is he now? Congratulations

Just the boathouse for this yacht was amazing. The problem with these megayachts is not just owning them, but crewing, running and maintaining them..you really need to be megarich to have such a thing.
What would this trip in fuel, crew wages, port fees and day to day maintenance be worth?

    • @leehagan1375
      @leehagan1375 5 років тому

Normally 10 percent of the boat fee so around 1.5 million dollars per year

    • @baddazzgarage2953

No it would cost around 500k per year! Captain 150k deck hand 50k each engineer 100k insurance 80k dock 50k then fuel! A yacht maybe 150 to 200 feet yes 1 mill per year but not a 120 footer!

Guy I worked with wanted a boat. He and I went to a boat show and I tried to hold him back but the super salesmen kept giving him beers and before I realized it, he had signed 5 papers of intent to buy on 5 boats between 30 feet and 40 feet. He ended up getting a Rinker 34. His decision maker was that it has a built in blender for margaritas and a stall shower.
I just walked away. He was in it for $170,000. FULL PRICE and no freebees. He let the super salesman handle the financing. 20 year loan, and he could JUST handle the monthly payments. Then he got hit with mortgage insurance, sales tax, boat property tax, boat insurance, slip fees, monthly maintenance.
Then he called me and wanted me to move his boat from the sales dock to the dock slip he had gotten.
I wondered why he didn't do it and he said he tried but crashed it into another boat. Turns out he had NEVER driven a boat before and now he had a 34 footer with two HUGE engines. He eventually sold the boat three years later for about $90,000 and less than 50 hours on the engines. He had to remortgage his house to cover the loss, and go back to work out of retirement.
Last I heard he had bought a big motorhome.

@Hans Wurst I'm thinking more like at the time of construction, their own facilities couldn't accommodate a ship this size, so they brokered a deal to use the facilities of that particular shipmaker.

Been in Dutch Harbor and Adak many times. Once we left Dutch Harbor on a nice sunny day, the entire patroll we been in Fog. That night we ended up on a S.A.R. Case of the M/V Pan Nova, a Korean Bulk Carrier. A Japanese Bulk Carrier collided at Sea, the Pan Nova sank off the Coast of UnAlaska Island. Sept 1983.

When the Conconi's bought this boat, they got an incredible "deal" because the original buyer backed out of the contract after the 2008 financial meltdown. For some reason, a legal battle began shortly after delivery which cost both the Conconi's and PAE what I can only assume is a great deal in legal fees. A settlement was eventually reached out of court in favor of PAE. I think Aurora is being sold out of spite. A great yacht for anyone with the resources to buy her and keep her maintained...wish it was me!

TAB, can you explain why the boat was confiscated by the Canadian authorities when it arrived in Vancouver? I know there's a story here, but I've never found out the details.

paisa26100. Because the papers were incorrect concerning the actual ownership of the yacht. The guy buying it had put ownership in the hands of a company of some sort. there was quite a legal dispute apparently, with the owner refusing to pass on final payment etc. A bad case of buyers remorse seems to have set in!! In fact I am lead to believe that the resulting court case could have ended Nordhavn. Fortunately Nordhavn won, the final payment was made and Nordhavn can continue building their wonderful little ships.

When they arrived at Dutch they met with a pilot boat
I'd guess they had the tender in the water to bring the pilot on board 30:30
      Just a guess though :)
*edit* Didn't notice later in the video long after Dutch the tender is gone! guess they left something behind!
