    Hi Nick! Thank you so much for this video. I’m a beginner at recordings, and I have been wanting to use my pedals when recording to DAW (Logic Pro), and I was confused with the set up. 😢
    I have a question!
    Many videos recommended to have reamps between the pedals and the audio interface, but your video doesn’t show this. Do I need one?
    And, would I need an amp sim too? Or is this optional?

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  Рік тому +1

      To record your guitar with your pedals you don’t need a reamp box but you would need an amp sim. Without the amp sim, you would only hear your very clean DI guitar sound.
      So you plug your guitar into your pedals but instead of plugging the output of your pedals into an amp, you plug straight into the DI of your interface. This is sometimes called instrument or has a picture of a guitar by the input. Then in logic, you would assign your track to be the right input. So if your instrument di is input 1 you’d set that on your track. Then you would load up an amp sim on that track and you’re good to go! Make sure your input level of your guitar is set at a good level - I would suggest just peaking at around -12 but the bulk of the signal hitting -18.
      I hope that helps?

    • @marinayozora
      @marinayozora Рік тому

      @Fitzgerd Thank you so much for the thorough reply🥲✨💕Ah I see. I have 3 more questions is that okay?
      -Is this procedure correct?↓
      I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 gen 2. So after I plug my guitar into my pedals, I plug my output of my pedals to this Scarlett 2i2 inputs. Then in Logic, I check that the input of the track is correct, and then I would assign a amp sim.
      -I’m worried that my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 gen 2 is too old. (I got it from a friend long time ago. I wonder if there is anything missing in this interface comparing to a new one, when recording my guitar with pedals) But what do you think?
      -The neural dsp (Archetype petrucci) you’re using in the video, is the amp sim right? And this can be any amp sim that I would like?

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  Рік тому +2

      @@marinayozora point one is absolutely correct.
      Point 2 - that interface will be absolutely fine 👍🏻
      Point 3 - yes the petrucci plugin is an amp sim and yes you can choose anything you like. Just make sure the amp has a “virtual cabinet” too, otherwise you will only hear a preamp sound with your guitar that will sound weak and buzzy! If the amp sim you are using doesn’t mention a cab or cabinet, you would need to add an ir loader with impulse responses. This is a whole different topic so for now, make sure the amp sim has a cabinet with it and you will be fine 👍🏻

For your actual pedals on your board, there’s less flexibility. Best I can think of is run them last before they hit the neural stuff. I'm curious if you have to deal with line noise from the pedal board to audio interface? Do you use the gate in the virtual amp to keep it down?

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  8 місяців тому

      Not really - there’s some great videos out there showing to leave the gain of the D.I. input at 0 - I wasn’t doing that when I first started and depending on the guitar (single coils always being noisier) I would have to up use the gates on plugins to help with noise. The room you’re in can make a big difference too. When I recorded this video, I used to have quite a problem with the wiring in the room. I’m in a completely different space at home now and the power is a lot better and that helps keep noise down too. Lastly, the proximity to the computer isn’t ideal but there will always be a spot where noise is reduced - just keep turning around until you notice the hum reduce and that’s the best spot to face 👍🏻
      I hope some of that makes sense?! 😅

    Hey Nick, how would you wire an fx loop in which you'll go back from the virtual amp to a reverb / delays in your phisical pedalboard? Would you just go out from your amp to one of your soundcard's audio out, from there to the wet effects and then back in to another soundcard input? or is there any better option? I'm kinda worried about latency too. As you can se I'm struggling with this, any help would be much appreciated! :)

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  2 роки тому +1

      Hey! I wouldn't try to setup an FX loop with my pedals and my computer. If you really want to do this with pedals, I would put my delay and reverbs at the very end of the physical signal path before it goes into your interface. I know this isn't the same as using as loop but it should tame down any crazy tone shifts - like if you were using an amp that didn't have a loop.
      If I want that kind of clarity that a loop supplies, I would stack plugins to make an fx loop. So for example, I would have the amp sim I wanted to use, then place delay and reverb and then have that run into my IR loader. If you use something that already has cab modelling, like the Neural stuff, I would just use the delay and reverb that comes with these as they are really nice and are setup in a kind of fx loop situation anyway.
      Depending on how well the plugin(s) are made, you shouldn't be taxing your CPU too hard and hopefully shouldn't be getting any crazy latency from this either. Obviously, this could all depend on how many plugins are running at once!
      I hope this helps?

      @Fitzgerd  Рік тому +1

      That’s right, all the pedals go into the front of the virtual amp. The only way to get modulation, delay and reverb after the pre amp would be to use digital effects after the pre amp and before a cabinet (ir loader). I don’t believe there is any way to do this with physical stomp boxes unfortunately.

    • @jonathanpaulpano

      The order will be as follows
      Guitar > Audio interface > Mac > Amplitube (or something) > Real amplifier

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  Рік тому

      Hey! You can absolutely do that 😁. I assume that amplitube allows you to bypass the amp and just lets you add pedals? If yes then that will work no problem. The thing to note is that the effects would no longer run into the front of the amp, they would always be coming after your amp signal so some effects may not sound the way you would like - overdrives and things may sound strange compared to having a pedal in front of your physical or even digital amp. Modulations, reverbs and delays should be all good but some things can sound really cool before the overdrive/distortion so just keep in mind that there will be a kind of trade off tonally. Best thing to do is give it a go and see how you like it 😊👍🏻. I hope that helps and thanks for watching 🤘🏻

    So you are basically running your entire pedalboard into the interface's instrument input which all occurs prior to the amp-sim. What about your modulation and delay effects?. I feel like this is not as useful to most people using amp sims who are seeking a way to have pre amp-sim pedals prior to the sim, and a way to route post amp-sim pedals as a DAW insert after the amp-sim.

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  9 місяців тому +1

      That’s correct - for what I need it for, this works just fine for me. As far as I know, there isn’t a way to simulate an effects loop with physical pedals and amp sims through an interface and into a DAW. It’s like having an older amp that doesn’t have an effects loop. Best thing to do would be to place modulation, delay and reverb at the end of the chain as you would if there wasn’t an effects loop on your amp. If you need reverb or delay after the amp sim, it would be better to add a digital effect in the DAW where you can add it after the amp sim or between the amp and the speaker emulation 👍🏻
