Exactly how I feel. Since these look pretty modular, the aftermarket and OEM+ should be really easy to bolt on should you need anything added down the road.
I really hope TFL will be buying a LC as soon as they are available for sale for long term testing and to really test out that 4cyl turbo. I never like buying the 1st year model release, but if everything is as good as it sounds I definitely will be buying one in the next couple of years!

Will be interesting to see how well the legendary Toyota reliability holds up with a turbocharged engine. I have always believed that was one of the key factors to get high mileage from their engines, naturally aspirated /lower hp .
Usually its from slow roll out of new engineering and fixing existing known problems. Basically conservative engineering, aviation uses the same concept. Its a real bummer when your plane breaks down at 40,000 feet. Cars really aren't designed to last forever though. For the majority of the market a 15 year lifespan is pretty good. Eventually you're poring more money into the car than the car's worth.
It’s literally just NA that doesn’t know turbo Toyota motors. The rest of the world has had them forever and they’ve proven their reliability 100 times over.
The ladies version of Toyota Entertainments is allways 5 years behind the competition. I like the first edition, for $50, hot seller, over $60k,not so much specially with a 4cyl
Land Cruiser all the way also. Let’s just hope that those markups don’t blow up in the customers face. The price starting in mid 50’s is very attractive.
Starting in the mid-50s. Except not one will be available in America at that price, ever, because The Stupid will line up in the hundreds to pay $20k over MSRP for an entry-level truck.
I'm very interested to see how the new turbo charged V6 in GX550 compares to the old N/A V8 in the GX460 in high elevations. We love our GX460 but I feel that it needs more power at our elevation (7,800'). I hope the turbos on the new V6 help makeup some of the power lost due to elevation.

I think you’re wrong. The efficiency of this engine will be a blow out success. People remember how quickly gas process can rise, and believe it or not, many truck owners would actually prefer not to torch the planet just as long as they can still enjoy the things a truck offers. I think the success of this engine will change the SUV market for the next ten years when EV’s or fuel cell trucks will finally be viable alternatives.
What MPG does everyone think these cars can get? I mean they are hybrids, but also very big cars. Would it be possible to reach 30mph in either of these? I want to get one of these and trade in my CRV but don’t want a gas guzzler.

Can’t wait to see the GX and the LC1958 out at Tumbleweed for a comparison. I wonder how the 4cyl compares to the twin-turbo 6cyl when it comes to actually using it!
The real comparison is to see how much power/torque they will offer with the GX hybrid. It's a good bet it will be a detuned iForce MAX, which puts out 437h/583ft tq in the LX and Sequoia. That will likely be the standout amongst all models.
@@makeyourmark00it's comfirmed the GY Hybrid is going to be the same as the Land Cruiser, turbo 4 that is. It was officially announced already but no car journalist seems to have covered it. @@makeyourmark00 I'm sorry but you just fell victim to car journalists being shit at their job, which they are almost all of the time, it can't be the same as the RX 500h because that's a completely different platform. I wish modern vehicles had a nice straight front and rear bumper for easy removal. The front on both of these doesn’t look easily removable for a simple bumper. Looks like you need to cut plastic which I don’t want to do.
First thing I notice is how easy it is to get the rear shocks off the new 250. All the prior Land Cruisers were a huge pain when getting to the rear shocks.
Looks like GX also has the raised floor. It's not a hybrid, so it doesn't have a battery pack like Land Cruiser. But, looks like it's floor is still raised up.
If you ever drive a Lexus you won’t be satisfied with just a Toyota although they come from the same family, you feel the luxurious and comfort of Lexus. There is a big difference.
Ok...I have been watching these vids on the new GX and Land Cruiser and everyone keeps comparing the styling with the old FJ. I would like to offer this comparison....the GX and the new LC are taking styling ques from the Gen3 4Runner! Everything about these new SUVs screams Gen 3 4Runner!....From the review side mirrors, the shoulders over the front and rear wheel wells, to the interior design! Even the "Ratio Proportions" to the width and height....It appears to me that Toyota is aware of the highest selling and most Iconic 4Runner and have tried to remaster the magic...AND I LOVE IT!
I think the GX should’ve had a higher HP rating to around 390-400. Don’t see why they couldn’t do this given the differences in engine size and justify the higher price tag as well
Yes the 4runner is absolutely Prado (150) based, as is the GX460. All three are built on the same line in the Tahara factory. Thus the new Landcruiser is really our 4runner. Nothing wrong with that, just means the new 4runner will (most likely) be smaller and a new platform as they won't make 2 Toyotas on the same platform. Btw i have a Gx460 and my 2 best friends have 4runners.
We’re still getting a new 4Runner. Toyota has confirmed it. The question remains how Toyota will slot in the 4Runner under the Land Cruiser. Will they change it to be more in line as a competitor with the Wrangler and Bronco, while allowing the Land Cruiser to fill the current 4Runner space? I’d like to think that’s the case.
Very cool vehicle, I can’t wait to see it in person. I’m a little sad the ground clearance is so low. My dads new Colorado trail boss has perfect stock ground clearance.
This is called the Toyota Prado or LandCruiser Prado which is twin to the Lexus GX in the rest of the world/ regions. The larger one is LandCruiser which was discontinued in the US/ Canada but is available in the rest of the markets/ region and is twin to Lexus LX570. Toyota is offering this LandCruiser Prado to fill the gap of missing FJ Cruiser to slat just next to Ford Bronco. However, to fill the piggy bank more the replacement of the Toyota Prado was Lexus GX in the US/ Canada region.
How was the visibility looking out the front? I'm 6'5" and have had issues with various crossovers and SUVs with the mirror being in the way. Love the color of the LC. Thanks for an awesome review, Tommy.
I would prefer the Lexus route as Toyota service has fallen into a pit of despair and aggravation here in Ontario. Waiting to hear both fuel type and expected mileage for the GX, (It's a minor concern but I just hate putting money into the tax coffers).
I think the new land cruiser is going to compete nicely with the bronco 4 door and wrangler 4 door. very similarly priced when you compare similarly specced engines in the competitors. a hybrid jeep costs over 50k and a v6tt bronco which has similar hp as this is about 50k.
why is the trunk floor so high? it will be extremely difficult to lift heavy items into the back, you first need to lift whatever you want in up to your chest height and then slide it it, its okay every now and then but everyday normal operation will get old quick
Leaning towards getting a lightly used last generation, as it is going to drop significantly in price, plus I am more into the naturally aspirated engine, the new styling alone doesn’t justify the price difference for me
@aliticx That's some real wishful thinking. 😂 There's a whole lot of LC fans who ain't gonna want a hybrid, you're not the only one. I suspect prices to stay the same if not increase.
That’s a bit delusional to think you’re going to get a low mileage/usage last gen Land Cruiser for cheap. Prices have held steady for years and will continue to do so as this new one is totally different.
@@JokerG16 Land Cruisers definitely are. I couldn't justify going out and getting a Land Cruiser with with 50k miles for $85k. I went out and got a 2019 Lexus LX570 with 41k miles for $59k. Has the reliable V8 and nicer inside than the Land Cruiser.
I want to love the LC, but the lazy engineering of the cargo area feels like a deal breaker. The fact that they just tossed the batteries/electronics for the hybrid system into the cargo area feels really lazy. I mean, you can clearly see the 'box' they added to the floor in the back, which prevents the installation of 3rd row seats (which might be possible in the GX with factory seats). I think there were a lot of shortcuts taken. I'm really hoping Toyota eventually releases a LC TRD Pro with the TTv6 and third row seating.
Uhhhh no.....On both vehicles. Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video but for a true off-road SUV I don't see anything but high repair costs for either unless off road means a gravel covered road to potential buyers.
Why couldn’t they mount the stair tire on the rear bumper like any overland would do anyway to drop the battery pack lower so that they could add a third row n still have great gas mileage.
Unfortunately, IF you can get a new Land Cruiser you will probably pay an insane markup. Hats off to Toyota for these great new vehicles regardless, well done.
Any word whether or not Toyota will put out a model similar to lexus's overtrail version? I'm guessing not in the inaugural year? Would be cool if they would put out a TRD Pro or something of that variant, in Toyota guise vs Lexus's overtrail.
New LC looks super cheap and hot-wheelsy. GX looks good other than louvre cut outs in front. Those won’t age well. Won’t buy a first year, but a few years later, will be looking.
⚡️The floor bed material and plastics inside the trunk area of Lexus looks really cheap. I am not expecting this type of material in a Lexus. It definitely needs some improvement.
I can’t wait till those cars start coming into dealerships and $10-$20K will be conveniently added to MSRP as a market adjustment. Toyota and Lexus dealerships are running their own brands.

I'm not all too concerned. My J12 is rocking it's 4cyl Turbo Diesel since 2003. They aren't exactly unexperienced with smaller engines
I want the Land cruiser and have the current 200 series (it's got some mileage at this point) but we need that third row
Like them both, but not a fan of the high load floor.
Of course, the Lexus is surrounded by soccer moms; I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gucci add-ones offered with it.
You know Toyota dropped the ball on the Landcruiser when the older models seem more appealing.
The fold and tumble optimizes available cargo space, too.
I’m digging the new LC and GX. Just hate that it doesn’t come with 33s or 35s and a slight lift as an option from the factory.
Can easily be done, not a big deal
They only sell them with smaller tires so they can claim good fuel economy.
GX550 Overtrail comes with 33" tires on 18" wheels
Those gears in a turbo 4 are going to be way to low to roll 35s easily. You can do it but it’s going to be hella sluggish
A crack on the Lexus bumper is gonna set you back a lot lol
That’s when you replace with steel
When i first saw you, i never thought that you would be so good at doing that
Great review Tommy!! You are a pro!
I wish the Toyota LC maintained a naturally aspirated V6 engine as an option.
Dyno between the two will be more telling than the peak hp/torque
If the GX and LC use the same platform I am really curious where the 2025 4Runner is going to fit in.
more "agressive" looks and similar trims to the new Tacoma...
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD For the US market I'm guessing the 4runner will be better off road. Still its cool were getting the LC.
Why is the cargo area floor so high if there's no 3rd row? That raised floor is where the 3rd row lives in my GX460
Definitely prefer the Land Cruiser 1958. Looks like it has everything that you need, nothing you don't.
Exactly how I feel. Since these look pretty modular, the aftermarket and OEM+ should be really easy to bolt on should you need anything added down the road.
Tommy looking more and more like pops!
I really hope TFL will be buying a LC as soon as they are available for sale for long term testing and to really test out that 4cyl turbo.
I never like buying the 1st year model release, but if everything is as good as it sounds I definitely will be buying one in the next couple of years!
I’d recommend stay away from the first 2 model years.
only impulsive buyers get first year models.. the same type of buyer who is often out of the vehicle in 1-2 years anyway
@@sly9263 Agreed, Toyota does has a good track record of minimal problems on their 1st release compaired to other OEMs, but I' keep my vehicles for at least 6 to 10 years, so I'll wait and let others be the test subjects.
The 2.4T has been out for a while now. It’s new for these vehicles but not new for Toyota
It is a Toyota, you are wasting your time waiting.. Nothing going to be wrong with it
They are the same size but somehow the Lexus looks bigger.
Can’t wait to see the comparison review between these two when you get your hands on them!
Will be interesting to see how well the legendary Toyota reliability holds up with a turbocharged engine. I have always believed that was one of the key factors to get high mileage from their engines, naturally aspirated /lower hp .
Exactly....and not only that but a hybrid. There is no way this will be the same land cruiser reliability for 300k miles
@TheRealCatof booost is used when im late, therefore when cold haha
Usually its from slow roll out of new engineering and fixing existing known problems. Basically conservative engineering, aviation uses the same concept. Its a real bummer when your plane breaks down at 40,000 feet. Cars really aren't designed to last forever though. For the majority of the market a 15 year lifespan is pretty good. Eventually you're poring more money into the car than the car's worth.
It’s literally just NA that doesn’t know turbo Toyota motors. The rest of the world has had them forever and they’ve proven their reliability 100 times over.
Just stop already- big rigs go over 1,000,000 miles and they’re all turbos.
Impressed with Toyota boldness on that one after being slightly underwhelmed by the 300. Cant wait to see what is available in other markets. I wish there was more information on payload
NB: BHP Billiton is the only company that ever crash tested bull bars with extremely poor results, they immediately changed their policies, removing the majority of accessories from their 12000 large hilux fleet
Really but where do you live?? Because over here in pilbara all the Toyotas got everything bullbar etc
@@KoDeMondo I work in mining. I trust what you are saying, I have the same issue in West Africa and with most miners. However, the reality is that the only one to ever perform crash test on bull bar have decided against ever installing it again. Granted, it may protect the car in moderate speed animal strikes, its downward dangerous at high speed as it modifies the crumble zone . The documentation of their studies is available online. I know it’s crazy when you see how much it is used except where forbidden like Europe (crash test and pedestrian protection).
Some people may trick you with ADR compliance. Sure, but what exactly does it have to comply with ? Never a crash test, it is just not done EVER.
Would you not think that if there was empirical scientific evidence, TJM, ARB and others would placate it on their brochures. 😉
It’s a big scam
@@Toubabou that why I'm against any sort of car modification... In my car I have only the towing but I strictly comply with the rules for weight ratio etc for the rest I keep stuff at minimum
Man, if only Toyota would offer the V6 and 10-speed auto in the Land Cruiser they'd have a real winner. I think that 2.4 is going to be the biggest disappointment with the new LC vs the GX but I hope I'm wrong.
I want to get one of these and trade in my CRV but don’t want a gas guzzler.
they're both awesome trucks . still love the old GX . that new one is quite the longer , looks very premium but that little boy sunroof is killing me . wouldnt hesistate to buy it tho! toyota has me by the balls
Can’t wait to see the GX and the LC1958 out at Tumbleweed for a comparison. I wonder how the 4cyl compares to the twin-turbo 6cyl when it comes to actually using it!
Probably similar to the Bronco 2.3 vs 2.7 V6. Both are solid, but the 2.3 has to work harder and you feel it.
Toyota is NOT giving you the V6 hybrid in that segment, I mean nor do you need it it's just more power which the GX 550 definitely doesn't need.
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 As you mention, I am now starting to read it is actually the hybrid 2.4L + 2 AC motors from the RX500h with similar hp but maybe boosted torque. I guess we'll see but both will have more hp/tq than the GX460.
@@makeyourmark00 I'm sorry but you just fell victim to car journalists being shit at their job, which they are almost all of the time, it can't be the same as the RX 500h because that's a completely different platform. The Hybrid GX will have the same system as all the Toyota trucks, so a single motor design with the engine in the transmission, but will likely require premium fuel.
As for me its the Lexus. Im going to swap out the turbos for twin T68 ball-bearing turbos and 50lbs of boost.
How often did you have to remove the rear shock?
@@Pepe-dq2ib Every time they wore out, which will be several times when you own a vehicle up to 300k miles (and still counting)
Looks like GX also has the raised floor. It's not a hybrid, so it doesn't have a battery pack like Land Cruiser. But, looks like it's floor is still raised up.
Why don't they make a 2 door to complete with the defender 90 and Bronco. If they sell it for a reasonable price, they will sell a ton of them.
You are so good at hosting these car videos. I think you deserve a TV show.
If you ever drive a Lexus you won’t be satisfied with just a Toyota although they come from the same family, you feel the luxurious and comfort of Lexus. There is a big difference.
LC looks great! Been awhile since I have bought new but maybe...
Hoping to find some of these in 5-10 years stock and in good condition. Cars are just too expensive now days.
Don’t see why they couldn’t do this given the differences in engine size and justify the higher price tag as well
I was thinking the same thing. Even though the LC only has a 4-cyl turbo, the power difference compared to the V6 in the GX is really minimal
The LX600 has the same TT V6 with 409 hp. They probably wanted more differentiation between the GX550 and the LX600.
Bring back the V-8 please.
I love the round headlights…hate the black wheels..
I’ll go for the Land Cruiser if I can get one for MSRP.
Thanks for another great video!
Leaning towards getting a lightly used last generation, as it is going to drop significantly in price, plus I am more into the naturally aspirated engine, the new styling alone doesn’t justify the price difference for me
They are saying it’s going to 52k for the base so I get your point
nah those last gen 200 series are still quite expensive, especially a gently used one, you’re gonna be paying nosebleed prices
Nice review. I'm glad to see you're continuing your father's journey.
If I could secure one of the Land Cruisers at MSRP I'd consider selling my 23 Bronco Sasquatch for it.
Bronco is scrap junk. Get toyota
Bad youtube. Why was i not notified of new videos. Keep them coming guys.
Sad to see the tailgate is missing on the Land Cruiser .
Odd that the Lexus is open and unlocked for the public while the Toyota is fenced off.
GREAT REVIEW!
Wonder when the order banks open
Why couldn’t they mount the stair tire on the rear bumper like any overland would do anyway to drop the battery pack lower so that they could add a third row n still have great gas mileage.
Now THIS is the review I wanted to see. Been looking at both of these baddies.
Agreed, front grill is hideous
⚡️The floor bed material and plastics inside the trunk area of Lexus looks really cheap. I am not expecting this type of material in a Lexus. It definitely needs some improvement.
I vote Land Cruiser based on seat material alone.
GX will be more attractive off road if it comes with more physical buttons. The virtual buttons on the large screen make it fancy for driving in town.
I can’t wait till those cars start coming into dealerships and $10-$20K will be conveniently added to MSRP as a market adjustment. Toyota and Lexus dealerships are running their own brands.
