When Obi-Wan explained Vader lacks the patience for a siege and they showed them dueling, that was the first time Vader and Anakin actually felt like the same person.
Makes sense since seeing Obi-Wan again the more Anakin sides of him are coming out
The Vader comics would like a word with you…. Also RoTJ

Finally it’s here.
I loved that line
There’s always been a certain disconnect between Vader and Anakin for me. Almost as if they’ve been two separate characters. This episode was the first time it felt like the same person and I absolutely love that.
Absolute facts. I know psychologically they’re meant to be different people but at the end of the day they’re the same people physically and I hate that there was never a connection it was really hard to believe
Same. Same feeling up till today!
It was a very nice touch to show flashbacks of just how much Anakin was 'predisposed' to dark side tendencies which Obi-Wan is now recognizing retrospectively (in hindsight). We too are being given the psyche in Anakin that forms the foundational qualities of Vader.
I thought that until I watched clone war’s but that just felt like the bridge between animated anakin to vader not really Hayden’s version even though both are anakin
Yeh the clone wars did a good job of this too but its nice to see it happen as early as anakin being a padawan
I see a lot of people saying Hayden/anakin looks to old in these scenes but just that fact that he can at least pretty much look alot like his 20 year old self 20 years later is pretty impressive. Not many people age that well.
he has had deaging software used, you can see it around the mouth and neckline..
That's what I've been saying. I'm older than him and quite envious of how youthful he still looks at his age. People need to remember we're all going to be trying to look younger one day and still inevitably fighting the hands of time.
Being under the radar and less controversy does wonder to you. Look at Paul Rudd
it's not Hayden's fault, they could've definitely done a better job at making him look younger
He looks good for this to be 20 years later but cmon you gotta admit he does look much older lol
The way Vader absolutely destroys Reva with no effort is unreal. It was good to see that Vader is still Anakin and they’re not two completely separate people as it was portrayed in the original trilogy. Also to see Hayden back as Pre Clone Wars Anakin sparring with Obi Wan was such a joy.

I loved it, because it is EXACTLY what should've happened. The Inquisitor are powerful to the normal being, but any well trained Jedi/Sith can easily handle them. As shown with Ahsoka and Maul and how easily they overpowered them.
That was the entire point of Obi-wan and Luke's debate. We don't see Anakin until ROTJ and his conflict during the dual. It is there when he just gives up and sits down and lets Luke just kill him/cut off his hand. He was done.
@NolanEP Exactly. The movies never highlighted a supposed separation between Vader and Anakin.
It's just that Vader *thinks* him and Anakin are two different people in order to somewhat distance himself from his deeds.
So far this show has been hit and miss but wow this flashback scene ticked all the right boxes, emotionally, visually, thematically etc.
Loved the cinematography especially the way the light from the sabres reflects against the actors faces. The scenery is affecting too, giving us that AOTC nostalgia and Hayden showed far more nuance in his performance here compared to episode 2.
Nonetheless this was a sweet touch and the best part of the series thus far.
Biggest smile ever when I watched this scene, seeing Hayden as Anakin sparring Ewan as Obi Wan brought a joy to me like no other. I’ve always loved the prequels and this episode cashed out on that nostalgia nicely!
People like you were saying the force awakens was amazing when it came out because of the nostalgia but look how that went. Nostalgia has nothing to do with what makes a show or movie good. Don’t be a beta male
I was so happy man

The way he said, “Are you?”….felt like Clone Wars Anakin. Props to Hayden. He was never a bad actor, he just needed better direction.
Now I wanna hear him say snips 😭😭😭
Lucas had no idea how to work with his actors.
@@jonbradley4044 No he does know. I think it's because people didn't like how they were characterized. Anakin in the PT is exactly what you'd expect from someone who is going to be a mass murdering enforcer of an Empire.
george lucas directed him throughout the whole prequel trilogy (AOTC+). Hes a stale fart like Vader is. And he did good.
@@enlightenmentdoesntcomeeas5337 Goerge Lucas is not an actors director, he's a visual effects guy, always has been. The performances in the prequels are shockingly bad across the board, yet the cast is really good, why do you think that is?
I love how they portray how powerful and invincible Vader is. Something that we never saw in the prequels/original trilogy but only in video games.
And Rebels
The only good thing about this show. The rest is garbage
Vader isn’t invincible. If he was invincible he would’ve massacred the rebel base after the Death Star blew up but he didn’t. Guess why? He’s not invincible.
Like Disney or not. We have to admit. They do Vader incredibly well. In the comics, games, tv shows, films. They just do Vader amazingly well.
@@Floydtimbdujbk_ Did you read "Star wars: Vader down" ? If you did you'd know how Vader would have beaten the shit out of the rebel base.
I like how Vader has around 3-4 minutes of screen time but we can feel his presence and power throughout the whole episode
That's literally the only thing about the show that was done right. Atleast something.
He also has limited screen times in Rogue One and Jedi: Fallen Order but once he appears, he's still terrifying.

Can we also give massive props to Hayden for giving us his Episode 2 saber stances?. He fights very similar to the first Dooku encounter!. 20 years on and he clearly hasn't missed a beat and his attention to small details like his swings are brilliant to see
Yes! I noticed that too! It was the beginning of his future form 5 fighting style. By episode 3 he's already proficient at Djem So. he learned to utilize his aggression well.
Heck yeah.
Same with Ewan and his saber hand spins
lol they had choreographers... you think the actors come out with their own saber-fight choreographies? 😂
Lmao dude it’s not that deep
This is exactly what I wanted to see. That connection between killing the younglings and Reva in the same sequences was glorious. This is the exact amount of violence we needed from Vader.
Well to be fair Vader was nerfed this episode, he wouldn’t have been so merciful with the inquisitor. I mean just look at Jedi Fallen Order for example he sliced her in half just for failing to get rid of the Jedi.
@@noslenthegalliant4798 but you've to admit that lightsaber vs force duel is cool AF
@@noslenthegalliant4798 difference here is that he was stringing Reva along. She wasn’t meant to succeed.

@@chazo1367 but he wouldn’t just simply stab her, he would make sure that she doesn’t survive by maybe force choking her or decapitating
Gotta say, they did an incredible job showing how much of a powerhouse Vader is in this episode. It’s easy to see how even without the Inquisitors he pretty much eliminated the Jedi Order all on his own.
They only did it because of Rey... Had Rey not have been a uber powerhouse, the original trilogy version would be the one we would get... The complete difference between Vader, who can barely move, and agile Anakin has always puzzled me... And if Vader had this power, why did he not use it when Leia's ship took off in ROGUE ONE or the Falcon in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK...!? Obviously, this raises many questions...
@@rijoenpial There will need to be some huge chances regarding the continuity and powerscaling. Since this is now neverending story some thing needs to rearange. But no series could avoid this just look at Dragon Ball.
@@rijoenpial I can’t explain Rogue One’s case, but I always assumed that in Empire at the time Vader didn’t realize the significance of the Millennium Falcon when he first saw it depart Echo Base.
@@rijoenpial Leia’s ship, the Tantive IV, was an actual starship and significantly larger than what Vader brought down here. The ship in this scene is basically just a big shuttle. Doubt he could really stop the Tantive as it blasted away at full speed.
@@rijoenpial Those events took place nearly a decade later. Vader is still fairly young here, and his suit probably hasn’t taken much of a toll on him yet.
The way Hayden is able portray emotions with simply just his face and no words is still top notch.

@@mscapeh4451 yeah guys we made George sell Star Wars for billions. Poor guy
Damn Hayden's expression at 3:22 is exactly the kind of perspective we were missing from before. He didn't gleefully walk in there, he was in conflict the whole time and this shows that raw emotion.
The conflict which in turn fuelled his power to even greater heights. I love it.
In legends timeline, after he had killed the younglings, he feel felt gulit and was heartbroken but his Vader side of him said that he was putting them out there misery because of how the Jedi carelessly treated him
I get what you're saying, but what do you mean perspective missing before? Anakin was never shown as having just "gleefully" done what he did, he was literally crying in Mustafar.
Hard to not be “in conflict” if you’re killing kids. It would be rather weird if he was gleefully doing it.
Anyway, Anakin was an emotional bitch
How can you defend Anakin, he’s a child killer, he might be the chosen one but he’s always been a piece a S
SEE like just look how natural Hayden’s acting is here without bad dialogues and direction
Explain how the prequel dialogue was bad without bringing up the sand line. That line was there to show Anakin hated his home planet Tatooine due to slavery and showed he resented sand because of it. You are a beta male bot. Live a worthless life

this gives the high ground scene sooooo much more basis. Obi won knew anakin would beat him but he also knew anakins drive to win would blind him and so he taunts him knowing he would fail. Just like he did in the flashback scene.
Anakin was always the better swordsman but lacked discipline and balance.
That is correct, the only weakness of Anakin/Vader during those days was impatience and arrogance
So far this show has been hit and miss but wow this flashback scene ticked all the right boxes, emotionally, visually, thematically etc.

Really? I thought Obi wan used the same maneuver on Maul when he sliced him in half and was just lucky Maul was dumbfounded and didnt retaliate. Obi knew it was a terrible move because it left him wide open
@@master-of-mind5881 Hayden's performance here is virtually the same as his prequel performance though. I don't see a difference.
Ewan and Hayden's still got their saber skills and they have great fighting chemistry with one another. Their sparring in this episode was better than all of Rey and Kylo Ren's saber battles combined.
They dont compare
Any saber fight is better than anything Rey or Kylo have done.
But it’s literally supposed to be better. These are peak balletic Jedi and sith. Whereas Rey is trained in staff combat and clumsy with her lightsaber as she transfers her skills between each weapon. Kylo also has an angry, forceful fight style. They mirror each other because of how inexperienced they are. One style is clumsy and defensive, one is clumsy and aggressive. Ones had to train herself and the other has been trained by Luke, someone who also uses a very sort of slicey and bashy fight style. As he’s had nobody to really train him either.
It wouldn’t make narrative sense for kylo and rey to have the sort of frenetic, fluid fight styles of the prequels.
rent free huh?
@@obiwankenobi687 shush these prequelers dont like it when you make sense
I am loving how they made Vader just as strong, aggressive, powerful, dangerous and skilled as he was in the games. even though they were sparring, Anakin was just dominating Obi-Wan with his strength and aggression and only lost because he got cocky, overconfident and was underestimating Obi-Wan and despite everything Reva has done, it was extremely brave of her trying to kill Vader in a duel but she stood below zero chance against him even Vader knew that and tossed her back a piece of her dual wielding lightsaber to give her a fighting chance, Vader was just dodging her attacks and counterattacking without putting any real effort in it, showing how very little he was taking Reva seriously
Vader perfectly demonstrated the quote from sidious. "A sith does not need a lightsaber, we only use them them the jedi"
He toyed with reva then gave her a loghtsaber just to mock her...literally
For as much as people complain about Reva, she's hated even by everyone in the show. Even her own colleagues despise her. It makes me think she's everything people say...by design.
It made no sense why she didnt give up he was just toying with her if he wanted he could just snap her neck ez lol

I never thought he was a bad actor and actually enjoyed his work especially in Sith.
This episode is exactly why I was reserving my judgment. It seemed that there were questionable choices made during the first 4 episodes but this answered a lot of questions. I really enjoyed it. Seeing Hayden back was just perfect. Vader destroying Reva with zero effort was perfect. Everything was great.
We think the exact same way
1. The reva vs vader fight sucked ridiculously
2. Trained stormtroopers are not even 5m away from the enemies and only hit them when they are within reach. 1m or less
3. I just think it's stupid that they didn't use cgi for anakin because it doesn't bring out any memories in me because he doesn't even looks like the ani i know
4. for what the fuck do they need a heavy gun to open the door when reva is standing there with the lightsaber
5. The Obi-wan series is all about running away and rescuing someone.. like the last star wars projects because the writers are too stupid to write anything
@@ItachiUchiha-yc9nv you are 100% right. This show is totally stupid and useless. Action scenes are terrible, shaky camera, way too many cuts. What a waste of time. I said after the first episode that reva was kind of a spy or something, was right
@@ItachiUchiha-yc9nv You must be trolling...
1. The fight was a perfect reflection of how Anakin LEARNED from his mistakes against Obi-Wan. It was executed perfectly and did a great job demonstrating how Vader has become more wise since his days as Anakin Skywalker.
2. Stormtroopers have ALWAYS been lousy shots. Watch the OG Trilogy and tell me otherwise.
3. He definitely looks older than he did in AOTC but both Ewan and Hayden have aged really well since the Prequel films. CGI would just be unnecessary IMO.
4. Cinematic effect/blast doors are thick. Made it easier for Reva to cut through later.
5. Star Wars has always been the epitome of the hero's journey. Plus, running and rescuing is in EVERY Star Wars movie. Rescuing child Anakin from slavery in I, The Jedi bringing in Clones to save Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme in II. Dooku fleeing at the tail end of II and Grievous being chased to Utapau because he runs like a coward in III. Luke, Leia and Han rescuing Leia at the Death Star in IV, the entire rebel alliance fleeing Hoth, and Luke attempting to rescue Han and Leia in V. And of course, rescuing Han in VI while also redeeming Vader at the end.
@@senevel1 nah,you both fools
The use of prequel flashbacks to mirror the progression of Anakin's siege on Jabeem was absolutely a brilliant choice. The whole episode felt like an elaborated and deeply intimate game of chess between Darth Vader and Obi Wan with the flashbacks serving as a parallel to demonstrate the fundamental differences in character between Anakin and Obi Wan. As another person pointed out in the comments, this whole episode explains exactly why Obi Wan won against Anakin on Revenge of the Sith and it was demonstrated whole both through the sparring and also through the siege.
My favorite scene is when Obi Wan points out that Vader doesn't have patience for siege and Ice Cube's son(lmao) asks him how he knows. The look on his face before the flashback triggers saying "I trained this dude" with the immediate transition to the flashback was the first time for me as well where Vader and Anakin felt like the same character, but also the first time when I really feel that Obi Wan is Darth Vader's actual real master. Even if Vader is Sidious' pawn, nobody in the entire Galaxy aside from Padmé and Ahsoka knew Anakin as well as Obi Wan did and he still does.
At 32 here Vader still seems very connected to his past, perhaps to a fault. He has let Kenobi go a few times now which tells me there is still love for his brother in there. The chess game between the two has been nice at times, and silly at others. Long as they don’t screw up canon with Luke next episode I like where this could be headed.

Hayden really did a good job in these flashback scenes. You could tell he really did watch and took a closer look on how anakin was portrayed in the clone wars series. At least thats what I was feeling throughout the whole training scene.
Now THIS is what I wanted to see, that deception they pulled on Vader stung him. And it stung him good, as we all know he hates being made a fool of, and all those flash backs were WONDERFUL, Vader ripping the ship apart was awesome as well. I do enjoy it when Reva thought she could take Vader in which there is no way he didn’t even activate his lightsaber THATS how little of a threat she is. This was a solid episode, I loved how he toyed with her as well. This final episode is going to be good , I hope we get more flash backs.
This reminds me how Yoda was toying with Ventress in 1 ep of clone wars, just abusing your enemy of how weak they are compared to Vader/Yoda
OR it made him nostalgic. An actual impressive move compared to how pathetic he thought Obi Wan was during the last fight. To me, the way he said "he was wise to use you to against me" had the tone of "Now we're talking, let's actually fucking play this time, Kenobi".

@Jordan Banks I'm just enjoying the show instead of finding something to criticize. Remember is just the season 1. This show will get better.

@Jordan Banks eh, she just had to find something to plug in into somewhere as she was told, no big deal for a kid so curious about technology (and it took her long because of the many cables up there).
@Jordan Banks Wasn't she overriding the doors ? I don't think it was ever about the ship
@Jordan Banks so she was actually trying to open the bay doors, not fix a ship. Both ships worked but they couldn't fly out due to the shuttle bay doors being sealed- My guess is low power? But it wasn't bad writing I think you just missed something is all.
I'm literally rewatching this over and over. This is what I needed and what I've been waiting for since Revenge of the Sith. The show isn't perfect but Episode 5 was amazing to me. Getting to see these two again like they were from the prequel era was truly stunning. I definitely enjoyed the episode overall and the power of Vader towards the end as he rips open a ship!
Yeah man that was just pure, raw mega cool rampaging Vader tearng that ship apart! And the fight with the Inquisoter was also cool as hell. Bitch never stood a chance. He's just so powerfull and has wiser than Anakin pre Vader. A killing machine, literally!

Yeah okay Hayden is 41 and he obviously looks older than he did at 21 but he is still a very beautiful man, as he has always been, and he acted and fought perfectly. This scene was something a lot of star wars fans were waiting for.

Finally it’s here.
@@mr.accurate8573 they still look young. I’m surprised
This episode was well written for all characters. Finally Vader screen time put together with Anakin as he still is not Vader of OT. Prequel era duel was nice and Hayden did well. No one can be 19-20s looking but he still has the boyish young looks. Revas story was finally done well and she was toyed by boss mode.
Nice to see a real Star Wars fan
You can’t even say ‘finally done well’ because a storyline has to be judged on its whole. And people were getting triggered about her every single episode for no reason before we even saw how it was going. So it’s not really finally done well and just simply ‘revas story’s is done well’.
The look on Anakin's face after he lost and got lectured by Obi Wan. Man that's sad. Hayden is a great actor. I liked him as Anakin when I was young, before seeing the hate on the internet, I never thought that a single scene of his was awkward. Even after seeing other opinions, it never started to really bother me. He was born for this role.
Agreed. Honestly, Anakin is probably high functioning in some fashion and never learned how to regulate his emotions (Part of the reason why I could relate with him on occasion...granted I didn't have the anger but definitely trying to figure out how to process certain emotions). He's an awkward teenager that got cocky over the many missions he had been on, and I can assume this takes place just before he becomes a jedi knight. I was...almost 12 when RotS came out so I loved the prequels from the beginning, too. I think it's definitely a different viewpoint when you're a kid watching them vs. an adult. Again, Hayden plays the role of an awkward teenager very well lol.

He played an awkward teenager perfectly. He tried to be like Vader with his stiff dialogue and it worked. I've always felt he was treated as unfairly as Jake Lloyd. Now I just wish Lloyd could've had an opportunity like this to really show the world what he can achieve under decent direction. But, people just has to go and ruin his whole life.
100% agree!!
Hayden actually did his homework, he acts like the Anakin from The Clone Wars, while still maintaining his version from the Prequel trilogy

‘’Your weapons gone, it’s over’’ love the delivery from Hayden here. I always liked his performance as Anakin in the prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith, but just these short moments we get of him in Obi Wan makes me so frustrated that he wasn’t given a better script and direction in the prequels.
I'm curious of some examples of dialogue between Obi Wan and Anakin that you thought were bad in Episode II?
He says it like how Vader would’ve too.
Vader is almost complete for this show. The only thing missing is probably his theme, the Imperial March.
Yeah the whole music for this series has been a non event, could have been epic
Probably as sign that he’s not Vader to the fullest yet. By the end of this show, it will play in his background louder than ever
At the end of the episode showing Luke and the Tatooine dawn, they could’ve played the Force theme there.
I will agree that the score is meh and if they used a lot of old stuff I wouldnt mind it would be "welcome lazyness" but in terms of the imperial march, as iconic as it is, it doesnt sound that menacing like for example the emperors theme.
Vader is supposed to be a sith lord in this show and not a warlord.
Anakins theme is way better. They should just bring that back for Vader tbh. The imperial march was never a true villain theme
that Anakin vs Obi Wan was like a swan song to the prequels. Utterly nostalgic. Also Hayden is the best Anakin/Vader.
This was the best episode in the show so far. The action, Vader's powers, the flashback scenes, and also Reva's evolution were well done
I remember seeing a weird look on reva when she sent leia to the torture thing, i thought it looked like concern
it is kinda weird to see them in their Attack of The Clones outfits while they've aged 20 years since then but i'm definitely not complaining. I loved these scenes so much
De aging them would strip all their character and emotions from the scene.
@@mwont you missed the point. I wouldn't want them to be deaged but it's just odd to see
To me, I’m glad they didn’t use and de-aging, I feel like that scene was so pure and wonderful. It’s so nice to see them together on screen again.
@@mwont I think his point is why they chose Attack of the Clones and not Clone Wars where Anakin was a little older, could’ve had them in their armour. This scene is so good because portray how powerful and invincible Vader is. And then it show Obi-Wan knows a lot about Vader's tactics.
This episode was beautifully constructed
Hayden was 21 on the attack of the clones, 24 on revenge of the sith, and now 41 on obi wan kenobi. My opinion is they did a great job. Never cover up your age to please a delusional crowd. It's been 17 to 20yrs ladies and gents, people age. I would of left it as two men in their 40s pass their prime can still have fun reminiscing of their younger dayz sparring as older men now.

He was having flashing of a certain lesson with Obi Wan, the key point was to not think victory is disarming your opponents weapon. Obi wan then used the force to take control beating Anikans arrogance. Vader had a few key moments remembering that. Then when we had that fight with 3rd sister he didn’t use his Lightsaber once proving that he even to this point is learning from Obi Wan
Very well put.....interesting...yet true...

@@bkj848 as it should be.
"Well, I thought it was obvious."
"Did you really think that I did not see it, youngling?"
maybe it's me, but these flashbacks not only connected A New Hope, but for me, gave me a better understanding from Anakin's perspective. Yea, the pride of proving himself was holding him back, but the Jedi council didn't make it easy for him. These scenes proved to me that they are just as responsible for turning Anakin into the dark side just as Sidious is.
He's still young, so he going to not think clearly or have that maturity early on like Obi Wan has. In my eyes, I feel the Jedi tried to mature him too quickly cause of the War rather than helping him through his fears & give him a better state of mind. Instead of the whole "fear is a path to the dark side" nonsense that didn't help him at all because, again, he was young. He's not going to comprehend that in such an early age. They didn't properly guide him with that.
With this flashback, I understood both's perspective. Obi-Wan wants to help Anakin overcome his pride & be more remorseful, but with Anakin, i feel he has to act a certain way in order to be accepted. That he has to be reckless at times or show no remorse to win a war. He feels this is the only path to become a Jedi Master. That what he ultimately wanted. That's what his goal was & was willing to do anything to get it, but didn't get the full picture.
This is something Obi-Wan, Yoda, & especially Mace should had helped him through more until he was strong enough to figure it out himself.
Of course Anakin is going to act like a whiny brat, especially when he putting his life on the line everyday & feels it's not enough. the beginning of ROTS kinda proved that. He killed a sith lord, saved a lot of his comrades and prevented a piece of a massive ship from crashing into a city & it still wasn't enough cause they sense to dark side in him. Maybe help him through it better. Again. he's still young. He's going to take that as them holding him back. Sidious was able to catch all that & easily manipulated Anakin to a false sense of hope & security.
these flashbacks were from Vader's perspective & showed Anakin was still inside the armor. Maybe that's a callback to the end of ROTJ.
maybe that's just me.

It kinda shows that deep down, Vader is still Anakin and that they're not completely separate as some would believe. It was cool to see Hayden as Anakin again; it's like he's never been away!

@@creativenamesmth he literally looks up and down in the video. I think he just chooses to walk because it looks more menacing

In various comics scenes I seem to recall he can force jump and sort of charge using the force, but it's brief. He does it in a few of the games too. But he's big and bulky, and has a lot less mobility than he did before. So he has to compensate for it. Even his dueling techniques change once he becomes Vader.
Some people have already criticized Hayden looking too old, but in a strange way I kind of liked that they didn't resort to de-aging technology. Makes it feel more authentic to me.

A loving apprentice that was a close friend
A loving wife he was about to have a family with

It's his entitlement and pride that eventually got him.
@Claude like i said anakin should have been smart enough to know that he was being used, he learns that palpatine is a sith lord n knows the dark side n talks about a power of saving the omes he cared about from dieing n yet he ends up begging with anakin for help agaisnt mace n then he tells anakin that in his amger he killed padme like come on from that point on anakin should have known that this dumb old wrinkled sith was just using him
@Claude he decided to ignore his master who trained him n agreed to take him when qui died to maul, he then decided to turn his back on padme n ashoka in the end by turning to the dark side thinking that the dark side saves people when he has seen that those who use the darl side dont save people at all n all of this is just because they didnt grant him the rank of master "yet", if anakin stayed i the chambers like mace told him to instead of leaving to go to palpatine then he would ha e gain the respect n trust from mace after that n he would have most likely been granted rank of master after that with mace agreeing to it

He’s still the learner. He still needs to prove himself. And however beaten he thinks ObiWan is, it’s Vader who still learns repeatedly from his former Master.
Really puts in perspective what he tells Kenobi on the Death Star.
All Vader ever became was a master of evil. Obi-Wan still had him beat.
It's interesting how much Anakin's relationship with Obi-Wan defines him. As Anakin, he needed to constantly prove himself Obi-Wan's better because he sort of resented having to call him master even though Anakin's force abilities had already surpassed Obi-Wan's. And in fact, Anakin resented being posted to the council but not being given the title of Master. It incensed him that he was denied that title and thus, he is resentful of having to call Obi-Wan HIS master. When he turned, Anakin was not just desperate to save Padme but also desperate to "get the recognition he [felt he] deserves". When Palpatine gives him the title Lord Vader, well that's as good as Jedi Master Anakin ain't it. Moreover, he has no equal, no peer...it's just him and Palpatine.
And on Mustafar, Anakin's arrogance is what LOST the battle for him. Until then, he was matching and even slightly besting Obi-Wan blow for blow. But it was his NEED to beat Obi-Wan, his need to STILL prove TO Obi-Wan that he was better than Obi-Wan, that was his undoing. Obi-Wan knew that. That's why he said, "Give it up, Anakin...I have the high ground." Obi-Wan meant it both in terms of practical high ground, but also in terms of interpersonal dynamic and mental discipline. Anakin is compelled, driven even to beat Obi-Wan...so it was always on full throttle offense for Anakin. Obi-Wan used THAT against Anakin. In one sense, Obi-Wan didn't beat Anakin as much as Anakin defeated himself. Just as Anakin did when he let himself be duped by Palpatine and got turned to the dark side. As Anakin became engulfed in flames, having lost both legs and left with one mechanical arm, he became even further enraged and consumed with hate against Obi-Wan. Unable to face the truth that he imperiled Padme's life because he felt Padme "betrayed" him to Obi-Wan, Anakin blamed Obi-Wan for telling Padme the truth about him slaughtering younglings and turning her "against" him, spurring his momentary anger against Padme. In the end, it's a very tragic arc isn't it: Anakin turned to the dark side to save Padme but ends up causing her death making his turn futile. And by then, he had burned (pardon the pun) all his bridges and there was NO WAY for him to return to the Jedi as he had led the siege of the Jedi Temple and butchered helpless younglings. Anakin gained an Empire but lost EVERTHING. Now all he has left in his hatred of Obi-Wan. It's what fuels his power. We see just how incredibly powerful he becomes when he's motivated by that much hate.
And in A New Hope, when Obi-Wan just lifted his saber and offered no fight, Vader loses the only thing that has in effect kept him going. As Vader swung 'through' Obi-Wan, he found complete empty air. There was NO BODY/no trophy for Vader to put in a display to honor his victory and demonstrate how he defeated the great and legendary Obi-Wan. There was NO evidence of Vader's victory over him. Vader had no prize for all his hate. Vader just found emptiness. And once Obi-Wan is gone...Vader's hate fades...instead his attention turns towards his son. Obi-Wan said: “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” And against Vader, indeed this proved entirely true. Once Obi-Wan is gone, Vader loses a key sense of purpose, his main totem for being dissolved. We see that Vader begins to soften and even Palpatine senses it (asking Vader if his feelings on the matter [of young Skywalker] are clear). Vader is at first still thinking like a Sith, trying to recruit Luke to join him and destroy Palpatine. But by Return of the Jedi, Anakin begins to reassert himself (telling Luke...that it's too late for him...an admission of how far gone he is and how at the mercy of Palpatine he's become). All this happens, once Vader's obsession with Obi-Wan ends. Obi-Wan indeed became more powerful than Vader could imagine; Obi-Wan knew that without him to drive his hate, Vader would weaken...and Anakin (the Good still left in him) had a chance to emerge.
EDITED FOR THOUGHT CLARITY!
@@victorpradha9946 absolutely adore this comment
Victor u put that beautifully
Darth Vader is a much more powerful force user than Obi-Wan, i don't know if you've read the comics but Darth Vaders potential gets shown quite often, like when he beat Darth Maul, even though Darth Maul was way better at Lightsaber Combat, Darth Vader used his intelligence and connection to the Force to beat him.
@@wodensthrone5215 Anyone here knows amd evwn address that already. He's powerful but he is not experienced and wise as Obi wan is. Impulsive, hateful and easy to fool is the issue matters to him.
The grand inquisitor coming back to mock reva was just 🧊
Honestly when everybody was going crazy about Reva "killing" him I called it. Didn't buy for a sec that he was dead. Besides this is Star Wars people get stabbed or even cut in half and it really means nothing XD
The mix of Hayden + James Earl is amazing
The fact that Vader can easily stop that ship from leaving is really proof enough that he let Kenobi escape in that fire scene.
Which is where the writing is flawed undermining the shows credibility.
@@master-of-mind5881 lol smh
@@master-of-mind5881 no not really, Vader wasn't satisfied fighting a weak cowardly old man Obi wan at that point in the series. So he let him escape so that Obi would train and at least put up a little bit of a fight next time they meet.
@@master-of-mind5881 the irony is that you don't understand the writing. He doesn't want to kill a washed up Obi-Wan.
@@master-of-mind5881 After this episode, how he even gave Reva a "fighting chance" with giving her saber back, I just believe Vader doesn't want to kill a old washed up Obi Wan, he *needs* to kill Obi Wan with a fight, so he can prove to himself he is better.
When Anakin said “it’s over” please tell me I’m not the only one who wanted him to say “I have the high ground”
they really managed to deliver the nostalgia in every scene these two shared
This was cool. Hayden has a legendary role in star wars and I'm glad he's got his redemption.
