What an outstanding sonata. The first movement is already the most beautiful piano music one could ever hope to hear in this world. But the third movement, that one is truly out of this world. I am so in love with this Sonata. It's like a small yet expansive portrait that details out life, Barenboim did more than enough to bring out this sonata with his magnificent touch - powerful yet gentle, and detail oriented. He really played the hell out of the fugue section of this sonata. Love from Hong Kong
Same amazing feeling, this sonata seems unreal like coming from an other realm of life, yet the piece shines down here among us through astonishing great master performance in the name of such as Daniel
Barenboim is a great interpreter. The articulation here makes us listen again to the wealth of spirit that imbues this work. The world around you stops when you listen to this piece.
Excellent interpretation. Particularly the arioso dolente. He is really able to transmit a tone of utter exhaustion and hopelessness. The transition to the fugue is also very subtle. It tells a lot about Beethoven's character...lament to fugue and back again. What a personality
This is just so completely RIGHT! I first encountered this sonata in Gould's highly idiosyncratic rendition; Barenboim lets us hear the echte Beethoven. This sonata brings me to tears, there is so much of Beethoven's personality in it; I can imagine him pounding the repeated chords at about 19:00, desperately trying to hear them or at least feel them.... The allusion to the first movement arpeggios in the last few bars completely overset me! I am becoming very fond of Barenboim's piano -- I used to think of him only as a conductor.
Просто замечательно! Великий Бетховен и Баренбойм! Очень проникновенная соната, какой трагизм... Запись хорошая, звука хватает - это очень важно для прослушивания. Огромное спасибо, Ahmed Barod, за эту запись.
This is epic! My eyes are always watery in the 3rd movement part: Adagio ma non troppo. The best beethoven piano sonata 31 interpretation I've ever heard
+Mike Fuller His 10th symphony and other possibly infinite unrealised works were too good for this world. We can't begin to imagine what new chapter Beethoven intended to write with these works. Perhaps not even music at all! Just the uttermost expressionate sound, perhaps another narrative embedded with a velvety, peaceful. Like this very one, this sonata paralyses sound to the point where silence becomes more silent than the absence of sounds. A soul which bids adieu to its shell and is forever connected to every molecule that makes existence.
Me parece una auténtica delicia. Después de escucharla un "millón de veces" me emociona cada más. Hace muchos años seguí el consejo del escritor Félix de Azúa y desde entonces forma parte de mí. Luego, Daniel Barenboim, ... sublime
The amount of silence in this sonata is truly......."magical" is the wrong word because this piece has been composed by a dying soul. Time itself just stops in moments like 9:52 and 18:47. This sonata is perhaps the most introverted out of all of the 32. Beethoven says "this sonata is dedicated to my soul resting in peace".
This piece is celebrates life. The second movement comes from a German folk song about "my cat having kittens". The fuga with it's bell-like subject looks forwards towards the heavens. The melancholy of the arioso dolente is only passing through.
The Third movement Arioso lamenting melody actually comes from the second movement ( Sol - fa - mi - re - do - do - ti ). Beethoven is a genius, and what a character!
Mi re do ti la la si -> Mi....Re..do ti do la la.. si . Not a perfect transportation but a strong emotional resonance. Very organic composer for sure:)

Oh Barenboim you stumble playing his deep meaning of the Adagio in his late years. Beethoven at this time has the peace of God within him, he is surrendering his ultimate power to the almighty & only writes music for himself giving it to God, not for the people anymore. His understanding surpasses the way his fan’s judge his music as regards of his deafness & he is hearing voices that don’t make any sense to anybody. So ultimately he gave his inner self to the almighty alone. The only thing that keeps him going is the music alone. He is giving every inch he can do at the moment, devoting everything to God and his hope in this way continues to become even greater until his death. And he does become even greater in his more later compositions... Because he always has room for more, because he is Beethoven & there cannot be another one like him. Even his own quote reveals the deeper meaning about himself. Quote: “There may be a thousand princes, but there is only one Beethoven”

The fugue is interesting because it creeps in. Difficult to detect to the untrained ear. Took me a while to figure out it even was a fugue!
You mean, basicly, that Beethoven tells us the better way for being sad?
I really don't find anything interesting in this sonata. Can you help me change my mind?
Of course Mov 2 is really cool. I meant, Mov 1. What is this thing useful for?
I love how the fugue subject enters in the deep bass at 16:05, unleashing a three-part stretto from bottom to top voice -- very powerful moment.
