I just had a porcelain crown put in. I should of asked for a gold crown but was never informed by the dentists about the difference. They juts told me it was porcelain on the day of the procedure. If I would have know this I would have asked for gold. Now I feel ticked that the dentist did not tell me the stuff that I learned in the this video.

Interesting, I went to dental school in California and we were taught that zirconia is actually almost as conservative as gold, around a 0.2-0.5mm difference in how much tooth structure you remove. You might be interchanging the terms zirconia and e-max? I would also argue that if you breathe in any material, even if you inhale gold particles that’s not very safe for your lungs either.

Yes it is called e.max but it is not strong as zirkonium. However, it gets light in it and it has the best natural look. So it depends, emax is not suitable for people who grinds teeth at night. It also depends if you want very white color, then you need to choose zirkonium, because emax is for natural look, I mean it will have yellow too. I wouldnt get emax if I pay that much money and still have yellow teeth wtf.

Thank you for this video. I have a question. Do you need more room in your mouth to get a zirconia crown as opposed to metal? I was told "not enough room". How can that be when I had a crown that just fell out after 20 years. I don't want any more metal but asked for a zirconia crown. I was told it can't be done for lack of room. Can't a zirconia crown be made as small as necessary? Also, is a gold crown all gold? I am a very allergic person. Thanks again, Dr. B.

I have had a gold crown on my #31 tooth for the past 32 years and it's still in place! I had it done by a military dentist when I was in the Army. I now need another crown on an upper molar and am dreading having it done because my insurance won't cover gold crowns and I can't afford to pay out of pocket for the gold crown. The ironic thing is that dental insurance companies nowadays only think in terms of saving money in the short term and would rather pay for a cheaper material and have it replaced every 5 years rather than paying once for a gold crown where they probably won't have to replace it again and the patient will probably die before that would have happened.

It left 2 mm remaining On my tooth with cover zirconia without metal. Otherwise can remove the rest 2 mm if I wanted to but it will be a root canal! I am too sensitive to pain. No way. Leave it left.
Another gold crown broke/fell off bec broke my remaining tooth. To replace the new zirconia without metal.

Dr. Mark I am having a crown replaced on tooth #3,I have a full gold crown on #2 and it’s been wonderful. #3 was a porcelain fused to metal that had a cavity underneath after 6 years. I feel personally that it’s possible that the dentist didn’t remove all of the decay. I’m not going to accuse the dentist, but I am suspicious because my oral hygiene is good in my opinion. My question is why did my dentist say that they are going away from porcelain over metal and he wants to do zirconium. I asked about gold on #3. Do you think gold on 3 is the better choice? I feel the dentist wants it to look beautiful. I’d take gold because I’ll be dead before the crown is. 🤣 thanks Dr Mark.

Hi Dr! I'm glad I found your channel. I'm a dental hygienist. My Dad was a dentist in CA, since passed away from cancer. I see a lot of dentists where I live in Utah, using the CEREC crown maker in their office. What are your thoughts on this? Does this make a good crown?! I'm used to the old school way, sending it to the lab, and my Dad would actually do his own lab work, along with sending it out, so I would see him in his office crafting gold crowns, etc. I have one of his on my molar. I feel like he wouldn't like the cerec, but he passed away before it was really popular. Also love your microbiome youtubes, I wish dentists were more on board with the food being an issue, unfortunately they're still like alot of the medical doctors, " food has nothing to do with it. " -------Please! It has everything to do with it! It's not just because you don't floss.

Thank you for helping me make up my mind and taking the time to explain to allllll of us, it is appreciated. Hi Dr. Mark, What about choosing a crown material to sit on an implant plus a custom abutment for #19? Let's omit gold in your answer, given the expense. Purely as it regards durability and low maintenance: Would you choose a PFM (highly noble metal) or Zirconia? Is it a close decision or is there a clear winner? 1) Is there a way to get a new crown that has the same composition as my old crown? I would like to avoid introducing any new materials to my mouth.
    2) If another dentist uses a different lab, would each lab use a different composition for the crown's material?

So I don't know what to do; is it possible to polish this crown to make smooth again? Or do I have to remove this crown? • @toothrestorer6588

@ Phil Jones. Actually you could have a small inlay made to cover the screw access hole. Gold foil would be a different color because it is pure cans not an alloy like the gold crown would be fabricated with. Also placing gold foil requires a solid surface to pack the foil against. Usually Teflon tape is placed over the screw head to keep whatever restorative material is used out of the screw head so that it can be tightened if need be in the future. The tape isn’t solid enough to pack the foil against. Even so, you would have a hard time finding a dentist that still places gold foil

Gold is good, but looks awful, even in the back I can see mine very visible. I sense this dentist is biased to gold. Zirconia wins overall, durability and aesthetics...he under scopes zirconia by saying 'may' last as long as gold. He should say 'should', and maybe even longer than gold. The newer zirconia like layered we are still gaining information on. My only concern is the layer, which is cermanic on the zirconia, can that covering crack? I don't know yet, but I will see as I recently had all of my teeth (28 natural some gold crowns) replaced with full mouth zirconia.

@ Mike Flair. Zirconium certainly beats gold when esthetics are critical but we simply don’t have the clinical history to say that it will last longer or even as long as gold. You might argue than zirconium is harder or has more wear resistance, but those properties are not necessarily a good thing. Gold has a wear rate the more closely approximates enamel. That means that the opposing teeth will wear more rapidly than the zirconium. Also the harder material transmits more shock when biting which could cause issues with teeth and especially implants. Zirconium is a much more brittle material than gold. Gold crowns almost never fracture. No doubt, zirconium looks better and is cheaper, but it’s physical properties don’t trump gold

Dang, I was about to get two porcelain crowns on my back molars, but after watching this video I am going to get gold. They are my back teeth anyways so you won’t even see them.
I’m not trying to go back to the dentist for a broken crown cause my wallet will cry.

@@MoMo-gw6qr Gold is ideal as it is softer than natural enamel and more ductile than composites. So when your natural teeth contact the crown, it will wear the crown (but not much) instead of your natural teeth. Many composites work the other way. The filling or crown will wear away the remaining unrestored teeth.
