As my old body man mentor used to tell me “you’ve got to move that metal. It got moved once, it can get moved back”. I like the idea of welding it on one end, and use sheet metal screws, and the body hammer/body pick to move the metal and weld it in. You could even use a jack from under the car to move the sheet metal back up a bit. Use the cars own weight to help manipulate that panel back up a bit.

Jeff I second your thoughts on how to fix the toe boards.

Good to know sounds like that's gonna be the plan

I would tack in the good section and use a couple of strong back pieces tacked to the original metal at the top right when the mismatch is and align it by hammering a wedge. Make a pie cut or two to relieve stress on the bottom toward the center if needed and weld in patches to fill that.

I'll be using some of that lol

Fitzee allows the to overlap, then tack it at about 1 inch intervals. Then come back n cut thru both panels for a tight fit. Retacking as u go

I thought about using that method.

I'd do the same. Start in the areas you know are right. The fit will start to tell you where it's not right. As long as the car isn't too far out of whack, and this one doesn't look like it is, you can make adjustments however you need to get it all tied together for strength. IMO you can let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If the wheels all point in the right direction, everything's strong and waterproof, you're there for your purposes.

Flashback to my toe board repairs, but thankfully mine just needed some homemade patch pieces 😉
I honestly would attack this as you described - weld in the patch panel where the alignment is good, then work the rest of it to fit. It’s not going to line up 100% but you can make up some small filler pieces as needed and you’ll never know once the carpet goes in.

When have been in that situation, I have found it is much easier to mold the patch, than it is to reshape the car. You are correct with your plan. Weld the parts that fit correct . Then use a body hammer and do very small sections. Welding them as you go. So the heat don't warp the metal worse that it already is. Then seam seal, and POR15. Your on the right track Jeff. This isn't going to be a concourse show car. Make it safe to drive so he can enjoy it.

Thanks so much for the input I think that's exactly what we'll do

Old paint and body man here. Weld the parts that line up, then grab your trusty short 2x4 and a 2 lb. hammer, the 2x4 will keep you from getting bad hammer marks. Massage towards the trans tunnel with the 2 by centered over the seam. Weld as it lays down.

Find true center. Check the A pillar on the passenger side first. Compare the drivers side A pillar for square. Adjust from there. You do want to move metal but you don’t want to move the wrong metal.

True I got stuck on the driver side didn't even think to check the passenger side.

If it has been hit on the drivers side and the A pillar had to be pulled, the outside is probably close to square, but the inside of the A pillar has a way to go. Should have checked and squared it before the cut to make squaring the inside easier and make pulling most of the out of shape metal along with it. Tax some scrap metal in the hole before straightening the inside of the A pillar.

Why not a disk grander and cut it out?

I don't think the disc grinder's going to do what we needed to do here

Would probably do what you described as you dont have access to the back.

Yes , it's a tough spot because usually there's a torque box there for Mustang , and it will be easy to know what happened. but at this stage, I have no clue how that pan got bent.

Dremel tool to cut a floor board? Even though it’s apparent the young man is just learning it’s still painful to watch Jeff.

We only use a drama when it's an area that's marginally unaccessible. There are whole swaths of that video where we are using a cut off wheel.

Replace the hole floor pan on that side

We plan to replace the entire floor panel on that side. But we need to get the toe board done first

  • @biglakehotrods381

I think that’s the way I would approach it. Short of replacing all of it, that’s about your only choice. You and your rusty floor boards.

That is on par with a Judge and/or Prosecutor referring to Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer as their good friend(s)!! That tells me all I need to know about their character and that they are different peas in the same pod!! IMHO JS SMH 😡😡🤢🤢🤮🤮
