To kill Bonemass, you should make full iron armor including helmet. Get rid of the root harnesk and mask for this fight, poison resist does not stack, so a poison resist potion will be all you need. The iron helmet will give you extra armor points. With the Iron Armor and an iron shield you should be able to block Bonemass' attacks (except poison which will be reduced by the poison resist). So, go toe to toe with him with the shield and iron mace, and use healing and stamina potions when you need to. Block his hits. You may have to run away from his poison spew at some time if your potions are timing out. Kill all the mobs right away with the iron mace. When you summon him, run up to where he is appearing and whack away at him before he fully materializes. This can reduce his life significantly. If you leave him for any length of time he will be healing himself the whole time. Find a nearby crypt, put a work table against the back of it, jump up on that and you can jump on top of the crypt from there. Put your portal on top of the crypt. Make sure the crypt is open with a fire inside so you can go into it in a pinch and get your rested bonus...
This is the way. Although I'm a wimp and definitely went for a much cheesier method my first time through the game, building raised earth walls that hindered his movement and gave me high ground to shoot arrows from as I waited for my health to regen. Yes, I know he resists pierce damage. But, half damage is still damage and it just takes about 300 arrows to take him down...
As the OP of this post said, Poison Resist doesn't stack. You're better off with Iron Armor and Poison Resist Potion, then you can run into him when he pukes instead of running away. Also, rolling or Parrying with the Iron Buckler will allow you to get way more damage and avoid a lot more. Combine Iron Armor, Poison Resist, Iron Buckler and Parrying with fully upgraded Iron Equipment (Armor and Iron Mace) will make this much easier for you.
Also, the Stagbreaker is pretty good for the Black Forest, a bit underpowered for the Swamp. You should look into the next Combat Hammer/Maul if you want to deal decent AoE Blunt Damage. I'm not sure which is next, but Valheim Wiki is your friend. It's not 100% accurate on the Newest Updates to the game, but for "Base Game" (biomes up to Plains and Hearth and Home Update) it's pretty accurate.
Tasty mead actually reduces your health regen by 50% but your stamina regen by 100%! Really enjoying following along with your adventures! Keep up the good work
Good effort, but like others have said, it's not necessary to have poison resistance potions AND the Root Mask, because they both do the same thing with regards to resistance. Much better to go with increased armor and use the potions. Full iron armor preferably. If you do that you'll probably succeed, but for one minor difference - do NOT run in to attack Bonemass if you're down to 12 health. You kept doing that and the outcome was the same each time. Death. You can, of course, just stay on top of the skull and hammer away with the Stagbreaker, but it's far less of a challenge. And you should be able to get back up there any time, by jumping up onto the Vegvisir thing and spamming jump to get back onto the skull. Or build the ground up a bit with the hoe to make it easier. Good luck next time.
To find the trader you need to explore black forests you havent been to yet. An icon will appear on your map when you are nearby it so you dont need to explore every inch of a black forest, just the general area.
Adding to this, trader is usually located in a black forest biome that's across a body of water from a black forest with an Elder spawn in it. Wherever you fought the Elder, cross the water and look in an adjacent black forest. The trader will spawn in the first eligible space that you walk anywhere near.
Yes, he heals. If you have two fully upgraded StagBreakers and stand on the skull, with poison resist and health meads, you can kill him. He is weak to blunt. Also, there is a dungeon nearby I saw that you can duck inside every once in a while to heal up if you start to get too low on health.
Well, I wrote you a long comment with lots of advice but it got deleted. Summary: - make 2 stagbreakers and stand on the skull, that's slow and boring but safe - use healing meads to heal, not tasty meads. I say don't bother with tasty meads ever, they are mostly for roleplay purposes - Before blowing a healing potion, re-up your food if it's running low. That way you'll heal to your new max HP instead of your current low max with your food about to expire. -Don't stress as much about his poison attacks when you have resistance rolling. You can get in there a lot more and hit him, just make sure he doesn't punch you, especially in your light armor. - If you stand on the skull again, don't stress too much about a skeleton on the ground shooting you. You're wearing root harnesk so you just shrug off low level piercing damage.
Don't worry my first attempt at bonemass was horrible but now he's my favorite boss to fight. You can make a platform in the skull (eye socket level in the skull), bonemass can't hit you from that level. Poison can still get you so make more potions. Use the iron mace on him and he will be done in no time.
Also, anything built with the hammer can be destroyed, if you use the hoe and build up the ground it makes an indescribable object. Platform, wall, a pillar, etc.
You absolutely CAN block Bonemass' attack. You just miss timed it the one time you tried. Dodge rolling works also. If you aren't going to Block then PUT AWAY the Shield. Holding the shield slows you down and just makes everything harder if you aren't going to use it. And Yes, Bosses (and all creatures) heal over time. So keeping up a solid DPS is important for taking them down. If they didn't heal it would be super easy to just cheese all the bosses by shooting at them and running away until they died.
hey caster, some quick tips to help you fight every enemy, and will help against bonemass as well: 1. Learn dodge rolling: Dodge rolling gives invincibility frames, allowing you to hit the enemy / boss a couple times while being able to take no damage from them 2. you can block bonemass, if you parry him with your shield, the parry bonus with shield stats will be applied but not the damage boost since you cant get the parry stun off of bosses 3. ALL enemies / bosses heal if you dont hit them long enough, bosses do heal much more than normal enemies tho 4. if you want to cheese bonemass you can place your portal ontop of the skull and a covered workbench to allow you to constantly repair your stagbreaker and hit him, as long as you have poision res mead he will never kill you, your stagbreaker will hit all enemies off the skull as well 5. your root set doesnt have a cape, it may only give 1-4 armor (fully maxed is 4 armor), but dont disregard any armor values they are very good 6. this is going back up to #2 tip, if you want to be able to fully just "Block" bosses your best bet is a tower shield, that way you dont have to time your shield correctly, this will hamper your movement alot tho, so determines if you like to play a "tanky" build or a "movement" build, i personally run light gear with a light shield, and just parry / dodge roll most of the enemies i fight Good luck in valheim i will be watching!
Hey there. You were doing great. You need a bit of stamina but you can get back up on the skull if you hop on the rune stone on the back of the skull and hop/run up the back of the skull. You are doing well managing the poison resistance. Another thing you could do is raise dirt pillars or a dirt wall to stand on. If you get that at the comparable height as the skull you can get him close enough to hit with the mace. Add a piece of wood at the edge of it to keep from accidentally falling off during an attack. And yes, all bosses heal themselves.
A few tips for what they’re worth…. Ensure you’re running with 3 foods at all times, for large parts of the first round you only had 2. All creatures will slowly regain health over time, but the bosses heal quite a bit faster. So it’s important to keep the damage applied up, even if it’s minimal to stop their tick health regen. Linked to the above point, means that sustained DPS is key for every boss battle. Every mob type belongs to a group of enemy types that won’t attack others that are in that type, so skellies will attack grey dwarfs, but not Draugers. Unfortunately all the bosses belong to an enemy type that all other mob ‘factions’ are friendly with, so no mob will attack a boss. Finally, BoneMass as a first time fight is one of the toughest until you work out your strategy for him, that was a great effort for a first time, you’re doing great! Loving the series! 👍👍
You did pretty well first 50% of his health before first death. I cheesed him the first time with 300+ arrows. The 2nd time I went full iron + max upgrades, and nuked him down. Every time since Ive used the full iron.
I think it's time for some woundslicking and iron farming. It takes some time, but I believe it is worth it. You can never have enough iron in this game and you will need better armor when you go into the mountains later. And stay away from the planes at the moment, they can be really dangerous. Refering to Bonemass, I would recommend a melee fight with a fully upgraded shield and a mace. And as others said, stay rested and well fed all the time and use your potions wisely. Next time he will be yours.😉 Good luck.
You're going to get so many different types of suggestions for how to deal with this fight. Bonemass is the first true boss and the game expects you to have your own play style by this point so everybody has a different way of handling him.
Build a combat base on top of the Bonemass Skull with covered workbench and portal. Arrows are almost always your friend. Learn to Always evaluate the most tactical advantage for every environment (ie where can I hit something but not be hit). 🤠
As others have stated, all bosses heal and monsters don't attack bosses. Get at least an iron armour chest piece and helmet and bearing in mind it is very close to black forest, set up a quick shack nearby with a roof and a fire so you can keep regaining a basic rested buff. Otherwise, try fire arrows but your best bet is what you were doing - avoid his attacks and run in with a mace to smack him a few times before backing off.
A valiant first try! Bonemass definitely ups the ante over the previous bosses... his attacks are very predictable if you watch his movements so I like to parry his swing attack, then get a 3 hit combo or two with the mace, or a few heavy attacks with the mace, then back off just before he barfs and keep a little distance for his throw attack... clear the skeleton/blob from the throw (stagbreaker), then back in to parry & repeat. Put a fire in the closest crypt to give yourself a safe hiding spot to recover health and rested buff if needed. Don't wander too far just kite him around the skull - This is easier with iron armor, and I prefer to have the iron sledge instead of the stagbreaker - with it upgraded you can one hit kill the whole group of thrown mobs which is really nice, but you'll need the trader for that first... and of course lots of health, stamina, and poison resist potions... Good luck!
I cant give you much more advice tbh. Gear up, gear up, gear up. Full armour, mace and shield. Put your portal close but not too close. Keep buffed and repaired. Roam the ocean at night and see what you find, might be something tasty.
Personally when i first beat him. I built a platform up in the trees and just used arrows. It was long but it was easy. And i didnt have to worry about other enemies. If on the ground though. You will want different armor and weapons and pay attention to your foods and potions. Only equip ur shield if your blocking. If you want to stop the fight so you can restart it and take a different approach. Open cheats. Type devcommands thrn enter and then type stopevent and enter
You really need to pay better attention to your food and health. You started the Bonemass fight with your food almost expired. And then only had two food items for most of the fight. And I don't think you ever remembered to use your Healing mead. And Tasty Mead LOWERS your health regeneration. Its only for boosting stamina. You seem to have gotten that backwards.
I sing *Then Sir Penn bravely ran away. 3 cheers for Brave Sir Penn! Hurrah!* Just joshing ya'. There's nothing wrong with a well timed Tactical Retreat. I've done one of those a bunch of times. Lol!
I always go into the mountains and kill a bunch of drakes so I can cheese Bonemass from a tree platform with frost arrows😂 I killed him fair and square with iron armor and weapons the first time and I’m not doing it again
don't judge the bombs based on this, by the way. this fight is basically the worst possible use of them. also: you might want to get a sword for fighting groups, especially groups of draugr. You do more damage to a group with a sword than a mace. Still use blunt against Bonemass and blobs and skeletons though.
You didn't do that badly. At the end there you were getting the hang of the Mace timing. Using the Mace heavy attack or getting in three hit combos (the third attack in a sequence does double damage) takes him down quickly. The position with all the trees made it awkward to fight however and your food/health wasn't good. You charged in at the end with 7 HP and surprise . . . died! 😉 At his summoning Skull you can just play ring around the rosy with him and beat him down with your mace, either stepping back, dodge rolling, or blocking his melee attack. You can really just ignore the poison as long as you have your food up and poison resistance. Upgraded armor would reduce that damage you take when getting hit . . . but its better to just block or avoid taking hits.
No, the root helmet gives 75% resistance and the green mead gives 50% resistance. You can see this in the video at around 40:20, where he takes poison damage over time.

I'd always recommend staying just in the boss fighting zone. The farther you run from it, the more it lets the game spawn in new enemies.
