I was 71 when I started. I used the schools Dave Clarks to begin with but then bought my own A20's . Love them. They make understanding others radio calls so much easier. Sometimes I forget to turn on the noise cancelling when I start. Then I realise, turn it on and the relief is incredible. You don't realise the stress that's created by the noise to you get ride of it. When I turn it on I usually have a huge sigh of relief. It's like sinking into a soft, comfortable chair or bed. Bliss.

New private pilot student starting out with slight hearing loss and tinnitus in one ear. I have been researching between the Zulu 3 and the A20. I would be happy with either, but I think that I will go with the A20 for the clarity and best experience during training and future flights. Thank you so much for the comparison and the training you have put out. It has taken an already enthusiastic student and made me more knowledgeable, comfortable, and confident before I have even left the ground.

@@twickersruss It was an old school passive attenuation DC Headset. I have no idea why it was compared to the Bose and others. There are some videos around reviewing the DC Noise cancelling headsets for better info. But overall they compare favourably with Bose but to my mind they are made in the USA and not overseas (China) and DC has a very rich aviation history from head sets to space suits for NASA.

I fly with a Lightspeed Zulu 3. My requirements were bluetooth and noise reduction. Both Lightspeed and Bose were in my budget, so I flipped a coin. It works beautifully, but at that price it had better. :-)
My old David Clark H10-13.4 is now my backup/passenger headset.

65 year old student pilot. I went for the Bose right off the bat... I needed comfort, as well as a good sound. I already knew the noise cancelling aspect as I have used there regular noise cancelling. Sure Expensive, but I think will last the term of time....

Im a 19 year old private pilot working on an instrument rating and currently use the Kore KA-1 headset found on Amazon for $170. I've had this since the beginning of my private pilot training and initially bought it because of the cheap price. I have about 130 hours of use on the headset and it still works great. I've never had any problems with it and it is pretty comfortable and not too loud. I highly reccomend it to the student pilot looking to save some money. I'm looking to upgrade in the near future to a lightspeed zulu headset becauee I've been doing 5+ hour cross countries for instrument training and want something a little more comfortable. Thank you for your review, I've been looking for a good headset comparison and finally found one!

I loved the radio call at 5:53 - too many people confuse the departure leg with the upwind leg. Nice to actually hear someone on the radio get it right.

And yet we still really don't teach it just because no one really understands the difference. ATC doesn't even have the phraseology "departure leg" in their manuals...instead you often get "extend your upwind, I'll call your crosswind". It's always fun trying to teach "the book" while also explaining to students how others do it in the real world and what they should lisen for.

    Great timing!
I've bought the DC 13.4 when I first started training and it served me well though-out that flying a PA28. Now that I am an officially certificated private pilot and looking to go on for an instrument rating I've been considering the upgrade for ANR to the Bose A20. This review helps a lot so I'll begin saving the $1100 ASAP. Big investment when I'll also be paying for instrument training but I think you review paints a very clear picture me me. Thanks for the review and also all of the fly8ma.com content, which I also completed and helped me immensely through PPL training! Keep up the great workl!

Lightspeed Zulu 3! After I earned my PPL I thought I would treat myself to a nice headset. I did days of research, as I always do when making a large purchase. The decision was always between the Zulu 3 and A20. While I have not flown with the A20, just from research I choose the Zulu 3 because of the 7 year warranty and the great reviews. I've tried on the A20 at OSH and thought it was nice. It would be great to have the chance to fly with it, but in the end, I'm still happy with my decision to go with the Zulu 3. The price to performance at $850 is unbeatable.

I picked up a Lightspeed Zulu 3 two years ago for $699 and I love it. Lightspeed often offers great deals for trading in old headsets. I'd say it's marginally quieter than the Zulu 2 and it has Kevlar cables which are much longer lasting than the standard rubber cables. It's super comfortable but I've never worn it for more than 3 hours on a single trip.

I used the basic, Rugged Air, while getting my PPL last year. Being new to flying I didn’t know any difference so the basic worked well. I was in a rush and completed in 12 days flying 172s in Tampa. That meant 2-3 lessons a day so I wore them a lot. Near the end of the day I could start to feel the ‘squeeze’ but they were good enough and not unsafe. Now that I know I like flying and plan to do more, it may be time for a change.

I have the Bose A-20 that I use in my 172 and I love it. You are exactly on the mark about the different types of airplanes though. I used to fly an experimental Titan Tornado that had a Rotax 582 two-stroke engine. The high pitched whine of that engine and the noise made by the uninsulated cabin was barely attenuated at all by the Lightspeed 25XL noise cancelling headset I used at the time. I learned that it was designed to cancel frequencies in lower part of the spectrum which are typically associated with four-stroke engines and general aviation aircraft. They are still a pretty good headset but can’t touch the A-20!!

IMHO Bose and Clark set the standard quality, customer service & performance ... I do think you handicapped the Clark by not comparing the DC-ONEx going head to head with the Bose ... one additional test; what happens if your ANR battery dies ... how good is the static Db protection ? Thanks for all your work.

I tend to be very frugal, but still look for quality as much as I can. I fly with a pair of old LightSpeed Thirty 3G that I bought second-hand for about the same price as new David Clarks. They have decent active noise cancelling and even do alright when I forget to turn them on so they're only running passive.

Actually hearing the engine and the environment may be a GOOD THING when you are learning to fly. You might become more tuned to your aircraft by clueing into audio subtleties ( like rpm changes and wind noises) that would otherwise be obscurred with noise cancelling. When I learned to fly in the 80's, it was just a mic and the speaker, no headsets, and we all survived.

I started with a very ancient (used) Softcomm set, did the job during my flight training and for the next 5 years, pretty good for $50 from a buddy who wasn't using them. I moved up to a 2nd hand set of DC noise-cancelling (H10-13x), not too impressed with the noise reduction, kinda cuts in and out, despite new battery, so I just leave it turned off. But they're comfortable, they do the job, and they have that classic look, so for my GA needs (about 60 hours/year) they're good enough.

Still using my Avcomm AC-200PNR headset from when I first started flying in 2000. I "upgraded" to a new Faro headset 2 years ago and it worked good until I bought a 1950 Pacer last year. I went back to the Avcomm since they're a bit louder than the Faro. The Avcomm still fits my mission for right now, but I would like to upgrade to an ANR headset one day. Maybe after ADSB, Tannis heater, LED bulbs, new GPS......the list goes on. Great video, I always wondered now much ANR helps and it's pretty clear they eliminate a ton of noise.

So they have a lot of character which I love. I bought a kit to replace the internals with a ANR system. So for a reasonable price, I have a reasonably good ANR headset with a lot of character. Not sure the mic is great though. lol Some day, I'd love to purchase a newer set of ANRs. Lightspeeds or Bose are my picks currently. Thanks very much for your videos. I later upgraded and have a Lightspeed Zulu 3 and absolutely love it. Very similar to the Bose A20 and really comes down to experimenting with what you like. I feel like Bose and Lightspeed are in a category of their own with bluetooth. Bluetooth is an awesome backup for comms failure. If my radios fail, I can use my phone to call towers, flight service, center, etc. Worth it if it is in your budget, but otherwise the DC is a solid headset.

Bose A20. When I first started flying in 1973 none of the planes in our Aero Club had intercom systems. Also, when I bought my first plane (Grumman Tiger in 1978) it didn't have an intercom system. So up until I stopped flying for a time in 1993 I never used a headset. Started flying again in 2016 and bought a cheap $150 headset to see if I was going to continue flying and when I bought my second plane in 2017 I bought the Bose. Huge difference in the A20 vs Cheapo headsets. I think to protect your hearing, clear communications, being able to make phone calls to ATC to pick up clearances on blue tooth the Bose are worth the $1100. They are comfortable and noise cancelling is excellent. I have bought cheaper headsets for my passengers but I bought a Lightspeed Zulu 3 for my one of my passengers/co-pilot and have tried using them but I prefer the Bose A20.

Well, I'm gonna need something soon, since I've been using my same DC H10-80's I bought back in 1988!! Just got my CFI and starting to fly contract when the 'Rona hit and now I'm just not really able to afford the Bose since 95% of my work just dried up!!! I was really shooting for the A20's, but would settle for Zulu's (if I could get my hands on some for a really decent price) until I could afford/headset fairy brought me a set of the Bose.
Keep up the good work and be safe!!

I use a bose QC25 with a UFLYMIKE microphone and it works incredibly well. You might want to check that out. After everything the total was something like $350. I cannot complain at all considering the microphone is modular and the headphones serve more purposes than just being my flight headset.

@@bangaloremusic Dude honestly, do it. It's worth the money, they have a great warranty which backs up their equipment and it's pretty much all the good of modern headsets without the dent in the wallet. You get Stereo and Mono audio and are able to connect your phone to it to listen to music or make calls. It's been awesome as my first headset.

Interesting! I got a Sigtronics helicopter headset which is by far the quietest. I also have a GA adapter for it. Though it is a bit heavy, it is the quietest of the passive headsets I’ve purchased. I have a Flightcom E-13 military headset that does okay...not the best ANR out there...definitely not the best. It’s more suited for a jet cockpit rather than a propeller driven plane. It’s also very heavy. I just got my hands on a Telex Echelon ANR used headset off eBay. I have two passive Echelons for my wife and I to fly with...not the quietest of the passive headsets, but definitely the lightest in my experience. I’m looking forward to the Echelon ANR coming this week. I’d love to get my hands on two Bose A20s for me and my wife, though...I know she’d love that!

Late to the video- but it is great! Thank you for taking measurements in real time. I fly in a David Clark Model H10-13.4 that I bought from a friend who flew for about 10 hours before having to stop training. I love them, and I have grown attached to them. That said, I borrowed my instructors A20 headset for 1 flight, and it was a gamechanger in fatigue and general calm in the cockpit (C172). I am looking between David Clark DC One-X or the Bose A20 headset as I am flying more and longer flights, and keeping the H10-13.4 as the passenger headset. I think that the Bose headset is in my future, but it is many dollars!
Thanks again for the great review, and safe flying everyone!

I have DC 13.4's and am interested in the Bose, but worry I would not like the decreased situational awarness from the reduced sound. I tried running earplugs under my DC's and it was just so quiet and the engine sounded so much different that I took the plugs out after a few minutes.

I've got to tell you that I love your videos as a young pilot even if it is something I already know, I still watch every one. Your reviews are spot on, I've tried several different ones as well and read review after review. At Airventure 2019 there was a vendor there that had a set of UFQ A7 sitting side by side with the Bose A20. You could try both of them on and the noise cancelling on the UFQ was the same if not better than the Bose A20 and also the UFQ was way more comfortable. They feel a little more cheaply made than the Bose but I gotta tell you the price made my decision. I bought them for $299 at Airventure but on Amazon they are $329. You really should look in to the UFQ and maybe recommend them for your students... It's the Bose A20 on a budget! Thanks Jon

Currently, using lightspeed, Tango ( wireless headset). I like the freedom of not fighting with wires in the cockpit. The only issue with it, it's mic lags on picking up my voice plus it's Bluetooth function doesn't work and lightspeed couldn't do anything about it. Needless to say, planning on selling it cheap and buy Bose A20.

I recently switched from a Lightspeed Zulu ($900) to the David Clark X-1 ($750). Both are great headsets, but the David Clark is lighter and now the preferred headset. I was hoping that you’d compare similar (top end or mid-range) to each other. Comparing the most expensive (Bose A20) with mid range or older models did not serve much of a purpose. Still, I’ll give you a thumbs up for the effort.

I bought the $80 dollar KORE AVIATION P1 Series PNR Pilot Aviation Headset - Black from Amazon. I am just starting out and didn't want to waste money if I didn't like flying. I have been flying a C172 , Cub and Champ. They work remarkably well and and very comfortable with the gel cushions and the fabric covering. They are decently quiet with passive noise reduction. I want to still hearsome noise from the airplane tho. I am an A&P and want the airplane to talk to me from all sences. So dead quiet isn't a goal for me. I tried and didn't like the Clarks. They feel like my head was in a c clamp. After about an hour I was ready to chuck them. The Kore ones were alot more comfortable. I have tried Bose and they are uber comfortable. I will probably upgrade to an active set when budget allows. Fly time is more of a priority atm.

Can not figure out how to set it up. I need a 15 year old to pair the blue tooth and set-it up for me. Crazy how I can fly a plane but can not set this up. They really need it less difficult. I am not a computer programmer. They need a step by step process in connecting the Bluetooth and setting up the EQ. I can not hear anything during the test because the Bluetooth is VERY DIFFICULT TO PAIR. They should make this automatic. I already went to settings and it just states other devices with a circle going around and around. Also, the green power light does not stay green, instead it blinks green about every second. You guys need to get this stuff correct. I do not need to spend hours trying to pair Bluetooth.

Am I correct in thinking you compared ANR headsets with a non-ANR DC? Seems kinda like comparing a Bonanza to a Cessna when talking how fast you can get from point A to point B. Maybe you used them as they are the standard 1st headset but for the same price I got a used DC with ANR and absolutely love the things. Another thing to consider is how the ANR works. I've discovered that the ANR frequency of lightspeeds give me a headache after time. Doesn't happen with DC's. Not sure if Bose would do it as I've never tried them.

I find it interesting that these days airplanes can't seem to fly without headsets onboard. I don't devalue the improvement they make - but I think we all need to remember that any of these are an incredible degree of improvement over the "baseline" Not to say I don't WANT a Bose - just that never forget that no headset and a tiny speaker were the starting point!!

The only complaint about the Bose are the cheap, flaking ear pads. Replace with Oregon Aero pads/hush kit and nothing will compare to the comfort. Also just noticed Sportys is doing 60 day trials on headsets. Bose are totally worth the price if you fly on a consistent basis. If just a recreational pilot buzzing around an hour or two at a time, go less expensive.

I just finally worked my way up to the big boys, have had a lightspeed Zulu three for about two months now. The Bluetooth in it is amazing. I had some old cheap faro’s and DC’s for about 20 years. But that’s not comparing much, that’s like coming off of a bicycle to a Corvette.
And I fly mostly just around my home area low and slow in a zenith 750 with a UL350 in it. No it does have some nice interior upholstery that helps the sound deadening.
But I’m willing to bet you the plane I had a few years back there can’t be another plane on the planet any louder than it is except open cockpits. And that was a Cessna skywatcher.
That Hass to be the loudest plane on the planet. Anyhow liked the video, keep up the good work.
On a sidenote how long did you have to stay on the cruise ship?
