- The day has finally come as one of my favorite films gets a 4K release from Scream Factory. Creepshow means so much to me so I went into this with a picky eye. Is this the 4K release I have waited years for?

Thanks to The Crate, I didn't go into the crawlspace under our stairs for months.
Haha Same here! When I was a kid I swear The Crate traumatized me for the longest time. lol
Looking forward to getting mine! My father did the animation, and also makeup and sculpting including the claws, chest, and foot pieces for Fluffy, at the request of Tom Savini. I'd also like to know if it's the same color correction that Mike had overseen for the earlier release. They were just at a convention together, so I'll see if I can find that out.
Wait, is your dad Rick Catizone? If so I got some of the original animation cells from him a few years ago. My most prized possession in my whole collection. So incredibly special. Big shout out to him! And the color timing is the same as what Michael Gornick signed off on before luckily. I definitely looked for that. I can say this release was done right.
@@RichardDiaz Nice! Yes, Rick is my father. I should have my copy tomorrow. I'm excited, mostly to hear the Atmos soundtrack. I'm so glad they did that for this release.
Big shout out to your dad! The Atmos track is really good. The thing that stood out to me is how much clearer the music sounded. Especially some of the library tracks. I thought that was really cool especially being such a huge fan of the soundtrack. I think you are going to be really happy with this release. Let me know what you think when you get it.
@@RichardDiaz Awesome, will do!
Mine arrives tomorrow from Scream Factory and I am even more excited now! I felt that anxiety you described when getting ready to watch this masterpiece. I cannot wait to get the poster also. You did this release justice!
Thank you so much! Let me know what you think when you get yours. As much as I wanted to just sit back and just enjoy the film the other night I really was just overly anxious hoping I didn't see anything wrong. So relieved it's a great release. Now I can watch it normally. lol
When my family bought our very first VCR in 1983, we got a free rental a week as part of the terms and conditions of the purchase. Creepshow was my first pick and my very first video store rental. I got an email from shout factory earlier today that my pre-order of the 4K is in the mail. I can’t wait.
I love that! There is something special about our first rentals. When I was a kid my first (or at least a very early one) rental was Laserblast. I still remember how excited I was because it was one of the first times my parents let me pick out something on my own and not what both my sister and I wanted. Video store memories!
Got this one coming day 1. Thanks for the early review!
Awesome! I think you are going to be really happy with it. As soon as it came in I had to jump into it and wanted to review it. I am still surprised it came early.
I was concerned about the Creepshow 4K transfer as well but glad to hear Scream Factory did a good job on it. I remember seeing in the theater multiple times, It's a great movie.
Thank you! I hope you like it too. And that is awesome you saw it in the theater multiple times. I've been lucky to see it a couple times at some screenings. It was amazing seeing it on the big screen with a theater full of fans.
Definitely hope they come up with part two since it's my favorite for sure.
Thanks for the review
Thanks John! Once it came in I knew I had to go through it and review it. Happy I was able to. I am behind in other reviews but I'm glad this one didn't take so long. lol
Bedelia! Where's my cake?!! I understand the issue about HDR and Dolby Vision clipping. I see it far too often and I'm neurotic about it. Blown out whites and highlights stick out like a sore thumb. This was a favorite of mine; we rented on CED in '83 or so and watched it a lot on VHS. I have the previous Blu Ray box set and it looks great. I listen to the 2.0 tracks on older films as it is more faithful to the original source; I heard about the 5.1 issues but haven't listened to that track.
I was so nervous about the clipping but was thankful this release did not have any issues. I would have been so depressed if it had. And luckily the 5.1 audio issues have been corrected for this one as well. I still don't know what happened on the last release but luckily the 2.0 track on that one was so good.
If you got yours, Rich. Then mine should be en route this week.
Hopefully it is! I am surprised mine arrived. I have also gotten two releases from them that I never even got shipping notices for. They just showed up.
Great review! Will likely pick this 4K up at some point, Creepshow is probably my favorite horror anthology and it's good to hear that the new 4K transfer is an improvement!
I am both happy and relieved this released turned out as good as it did. The anxiety I felt Sunday night watching it was kind of ridiculous but I really needed this release to be good. Luckily it is.
Usually when a stereo mix is made it can be 'matrixed' out to the surround channels.
This is true. My receiver basically turns it into surround. I do feel the stereo mix sounds a bit fuller to me though I did like the Dolby Atmos mix.
@@RichardDiaz that's usually my take, too. Stereo surround sounds really good.
I just got the version with the posters and enamel pins.🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love it.
I love Creepshow, I saw it opening night at The Edwards Bristol in Santa Ana, CA now an LA Fitness; still have the comic that came out that previous summer when the film was originally supposed to be released befor Warner’s picked it up. The BR was awesome from SF and I love the packaging but I have no reason to upgrade.
That is so awesome you saw it opening night! I can imagine what it was like seeing it for the first time like that. I have seen it a couple times at some screenings when I lived in Chicago which was fun. Loved seeing it with a theater full of fans.
I have the Just Desserts blu, picked it up during a sale. Just ordered Creepshow with your link.
Thank you so much for using the link! That means a ton.
I have the previous release and it’s one of my favorites, no need to upgrade since I haven’t upgraded to a 4K player
I did not notice any real difference between the previous Blu-ray and the new one included in this set so you are good with that one. If you do upgrade to 4K eventually then this will be a good one to get.
This was an intense review Richard! Man, I was listening very carefully along the way, and I was worried, but really relieved when you gave it such high praise. That’s too bad about just desserts. I still haven’t seen it. I can’t believe I didn’t even know about it until you had mentioned it previously. I will definitely be getting myself a copy. There is also plenty of extras for me to see for the first time because I didn’t get the Blu-ray when it came out a few years back. I was still watching my DVD lol anyway very glad to hear that they did a good job.
I was originally going to do a straight forward review but I wanted to also go through my process. Watching the film that night was a bit nerve wracking because I really wanted it to be as good as possible. So relieved it turned out so good. I am looking forward to just watching the film now without anxiety. Lol Just Desserts is really worth picking up at some point. It was a great documentary made for the UK DVD years ago from Red Shirt Pictures and I’m glad it got some kind of release here but it also has a lot of other great extras on it including one of my favorites, the Scream Greats video on Tom Savini from the 80’s. I used to watch that a ton as a kid.
I just turned 30 and upgraded my child’s play, child’s play 2 and escape from NY; next purchase- The Burning 4K 😍😍that movie rocks lol
Happy Birthday! Great upgrades you did there. Escape From New York is one of my favorite films. I am so excited for The Burning too. That one really was long overdo for a new transfer and I love that it'll be in 4K.
I first saw "Creepshow", as a kid, being broadcast on TNT on a Sunday morning, probably censored to hell, but i loved it. Love it, and i really want to rebuy this, but im balling on a budget, and happy with the old Blu Ray...save for that horrific 5.1 track.
That is awesome! I love that it was a Sunday morning. Luckily this isn't a limited release or anything so plenty of time to get it down the line. And that Blu-ray holds up great. And yeah, just pick the stereo track. lol
just so you know this is not a new scan, that's just what one of the websites says all the time
it's still the same master as the 2018 release just in native 4K
Piranha was another example, the announcement said the 4K was a new scan when in fact it was the same master as their steelbook from 2019 with better resolution and encoding, the exception was Black Christmas which was an entirely new master compared to the old Shout release
Thank you for clarifying that. I always get thrown off when I see that in their specs about new scans to films that I know they gave 4K treatments to not that long ago. I wish they would word it differently.
@RichardDiaz yea I agree, I mean it's possible they may have done some additional things like minor cleanup compared to the 2018 release and obviously will now have an HDR grade, but the base master is exactly the same
Anyone else getting a skip at 44 minutes, when Leslie Nielsen says “it’s show time!” on the beach? I’ve gone through 3 discs from Amazon and they all skip at the same spot. Tried it on my top of the line Panasonic UB820 and PS5 and same results.
Great video. I saw a Creepshow in the theater when it came out. I even managed to see the (disappointing) sequel in the theater when it opened.
The sequel has the lake monster and the wooden Native American sculpture ?
Thank you Gary! That is so cool you saw it then! I was lucky to see it a few times at screenings when I lived in Chicago. It was really special seeing it in a theater. While I love the first film so much (as I often gush over it on here lol) I still love the sequel too. I hope it gets a 4K upgrade at some point.
Creepshow is probably the movie I have seen the most times. Saw it back in the 80’s when I was 9 years old and it was one of the first VHS tapes I had. It became the movie I’d watch when home sick from school. Watch every year since. Like you bought every format it’s been in. Mine 4K coming in then mail.!
That is so awesome! A fellow Creepshow lover! I am happy I still have my VHS copy but it has to be so worn out because I used to watch it so much. I’m just glad I have it still because a few years ago when I moved I couldn’t find a lot of my old VHS and figured I must have gotten rid of them at some point. Luckily I didn’t and Creepshow was still there.
@@RichardDiaz still have my vhs too, from 83’-84’ and it weighs a ton. Unfortunately it’s just the tape as the cardboard fell apart!
box (case) says audio in 5.1 and 2.0 BUT NO ATMOS. Sooooo, is this version you referring to, HAS ATMOS track/sound????? And AT
Oh damn you. I was trying to avoid this upgrade due to the fact as I loved there Blu release and the packaging. I was gonna pass on this. But now I feel like I should prob get it.
Just got this today adn watched it and holy cow I wasn't expecting that huge a jump in quality but it utterly blew me away. I was gonna wait until it went on sale but grabbed it when I went out today to get Vacation 4k and so glad I did, they did a fantastic job!
I have the previous set and I love it to bits. I don’t really need the 4K set BUT that new slipcover is gorgeous….
I really like that new slipcover. I'm actually debating which one to use on my Romero shelf.
@@RichardDiaz the 4K set is Perfect for your shelf.
There's really no reason to pick this up on 4K if you already have the previous SF blu-ray - the blu-ray is super clean. All they did was port this over to 4K, and add a new audio track. Not worth $30. If you must, pick it up on sale
Not entirely true, the benefits of the Dolby Vision grading on a nicer television will be a nice upgrade for the color space and overall definition.
Just like all the Scream Factory 4Ks, these are (usually) worth the upgrade if you’re a big fan of the movie.
@@ProtonPackGuy You're only getting a slight uptick in quality. Not enough to warrant another purchase (all depending on the previous edition). I have a nice home theatre setup, and with nearly every single SF 4K I've purchased, it hasn't been worth the additional $30. In some cases yes, in most cases, no.
I agree that the recent Blu-ray transfer is beautiful, but I’m a Creepshow completist, so I will have that 4k as well.
We did Creepshow in my Media Studies class, I think when I was 16ish. Which is weird as I am pretty certain it had (at that time) a BBFC Rating of 18. I took it as an example of being allowed to watch horror if it was in the context of examining the genre but not being allowed to enjoy it. What with me being on the lowest rung of the class ladder and all that, and prone to emulate anything we had watched on the telly lol Blinking hypocrites at the BBFC.
I was hoping this would be a solid release, I love this movie!
So happy and relieved to say it is. I was worried because I needed this film to look great. Not sure we'd get another chance at a 4K so a sigh of relief is indeed warranted.
Just got it to finally watch all of it for the first time!
Nice! I hope you like it. Let me know what you think.
Creepshow was the first movie I saw in theaters with my childhood friends and it scared us. It was significant because prior to this I used to go with my dad to watch horror movies in theaters. Good that the movie looks and sounds great. Bro you look happier than a dog with 2 tails lol!😂👍
Hahaha Happier than a dog with two tails. Love that! Lol I really am because I was pretty worried that this release would have issues. I so wanted this to be as good as possible and thank goodness it is. I actually had anxiety watching it looking for things and by the end of the film I let out a big sigh of relief. Now I can just watch the film and enjoy it.
@@RichardDiaz thanks for answering to my comment!👍
Great review. Looking foward to seeing creepshöw ín 4k.
Thank you Wayne! I think you are going to be happy with the 4K on this one.
I’ve never seen creep show but I’ve seen creep show 2 and that has the blob monster in the lake ?
You are right! That is Creepshow 2. That one had three stories to it while the first Creepshow has five. Hopefully we get a 4K of Creepshow 2 at some point too.
hey Richard did creepshow 2 have a theatrical release or was that straight to video. I like them both equally
I got mine today! Here's to hoping the new 4K transfer is noticeable.
Awesome! Let me know what you think of it.
I was really looking forward to this review, I watched this Sunday and the SF Blu-Ray looks amazing and I felt like it's good enough for me so I was a little hesitant to buy this again. Based on your review though it looks like I'll be buying this yet again, I just wished there was a cheaper way to get the new slipcover, it looks great.
I am so relieved this release turned out as good as it did. The new slipcover is really cool. I wish some of these bundles were a little more reasonably priced. But worth picking up at some point if you can swing it.
Great review 👍 hoping not region locked like People Under The Stairs.
Thank you! I hope it isn't region locked either. I'm still shocked that happened with People Under The Stairs.
Its on my list!
Thank you for the passionate review!
Also love this gem of a movie!
Thank you Alfonso! I really appreciate it. I love the film so much so it's hard not to get all excited about it. lol
Do you feel letdown any, based on packaging? Compared to the Blu-ray of course
A bit. I would have liked a nice package overall. Similar to what they did with the Blu-ray with the outer case and the nice thick booklet.
Creepshow is in my top 10 films of all time. I shared its greatness with my daughter, who loves it as well.
Now that is parenting done right! Love it!
This is a rookie question, but idk much about the audio aspects. What is the difference between the 3 versions (2.0, 5.1 & Dolby)? Is there a difference in the actual audio or music like the soundtrack, or is it more to do with the particular surround sound? Sorry it's probably a noob question but I never know if I'm choosing the right audio option when watching a movie. I don't know what scenarios would warrant each of the 3 options. Any feedback would be great!
Not a noob question at all. In fact a very good one. It can get confusing when a release has multiple audio options. The Dolby Atmos track and the 5.1 are both discrete surround tracks. They have been mixed so each speaker is technically separate from the others but create a full sound field. Both of these mixes are newer. I believe the 5.1 one was created several years ago for a video release (possibly the UK DVD?) and the Dolby Atmos mix is a newer one done for this release. The 2.0 stereo track is the original theatrical mix. If you have a surround system then the Dolby Atmos track I thought was a good one. I do prefer the original theatrical 2.0 stereo mix for this one as it sounds a little fuller to me while the surround mix sounds a little lighter in some ways. If that makes sense. But it is still a good track. The Dolby Atmos is the default and whether you have a Dolby Atmos setup or not you will still get a good sounding downconverted stereo mix at least. Though at that point I would choose the original stereo mix but that is more my personal preference.
I hope this helps on some level. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
Does movie move as it does on dvd?
How do you mean move? Do you mean like stabilization? They have fixed some of the wobble that was on older releases. I think the older Warner Bros Blu-ray had a few shots where it wobbled a bit.
@@RichardDiaz yes wobbled
I don’t own it at all I would like to buy it.
This is a great release if you choose to get the film eventually. Going forward it'll be the one I reach for.
His review was too indecisive and contradicting. Nothing he said felt confident to me about the A/V quality of the 4K release because, he kept comparing the old, previous home video releases of the movie, when the 4K should've been reviewed on its own merit. Nobody is interested in what the DVD, Laserdisc, VHS and Blu-ray releases of Creepshow look like because most likely they already have it and know what it looks like. People are only interested in the A/V quality of the 4K.
I was using the older releases more as a reference to my own history with the film growing up. Both the video and and audio on this release is really great and for me well worth the upgrade from Blu-ray. I do wish the extras weren't as split up between the 4K and the Blu-ray but a small gripe. No issues with the picture or audio and I was looking for them. Luckily no clipping which I was worried about after Exorcist III. While I prefer the theatrical 2.0 stereo mix (and I am happy it's here) I do think the new Dolby Atmos mix is a good one.
@@RichardDiaz Thank you.
@@slimdude2011 You bet! As much as I do like doing reviews on my channel I would say they are more casual reviews than formal. More like asking a friend their thoughts on something rather than someone who really knows the ins and outs. While I know a lot about actual film and filmmaking, because of my background, I definitely wouldn't call my reviews anything more than me just sharing basic thoughts.
... 🎃🍰🎂🌠🧟♂🧟♀🌊🩸🪳🪳🩸Mine comes in on thursday‼
Awesome! I hope you have it by now!
