    I recently discovered that the original screenplay by Sam Hamm for this movie not only didn’t have Batman killing, but also never had the Joker being the one who murdered Bruce’s parents. Burton made the change for Joker as the Waynes’ killer for the third act, which coincidentally the only portion of the movie where Batman kills. No, seriously, on rewatch, I was surprised that for a version criticized as being okay with killing, the fights before the reveal are lacking in Batman killings. He even struggles to save Jack Napier from the acid fall.
    Considering that Returns was the one where Burton had more creative control, and that’s where Batman really seems cavalier about burning/blowing dudes up throughout, the reveal about the change in this movie’s script makes a lot of sense.

    • @Krendall2
      @Krendall2 2 роки тому +9

      Making the Joker the one who "created" Batman was a controversial choice, and I feel it's a bad one. The mugger should be a fairly unimportant person because it represents the randomness of crime itself. Batman isn't out for revenge, he's out to fight crime to keep another person from going through what he did.

    So, you might be wondering where the classic "I'm Batman" line is. Well, that's because...it wasn't in the original screenplay. The original line was the one we see in this comic: "I am the night". What happened was, Keaton, who had repeated the line over and over again leading up to when they'd film the scene, but when they finally rolled camera, he said "I'm Batman", and they liked it so much they decided to go with that instead.

      Furthermore, despite the Critic's scathing remark about Linkara not always reviewing comic books, Atop the Fourth Wall doesn't have them in its name, so it's not forced to stick with them even if that's Linkara's preference. 1. Depends on your definition of nostalgic, or who he's peddling nostalgia to. After all, much of the audience that tuned in back in the days to watch him review films from their childhoods from the 90s (and occasionally late 80s) are now pushing forty, if not already into their forties, (which sadly includes myself...😭) and I would think, though I'm not sure, that younger people are joining, if not slowly taking over his audience and his last few reviews, such as Eragon and the Sorcerer's Apprentice are at least about ten years old. Old enough to be nostalgic for these younger, newer audience members.
      Plus, as Linkara mentioned above, he recently reviewed G.I.Joe the Movie from 1987 and before that, Monkeybone (2000) and before that Ang Lee's Hulk from '03 and in July, Cats Don't Dance which was a 90s film.
      3. Back in June or July around the time of his 10th anniversary celebration. He and Cinema Snob look almost like twins now.

      Omar Harris The Sorcerer's Apprentice is only from 2010, but keep in mind: The justification for reviewing 2005's Alone in the Dark in 2009 applies to many of Doug's NC review choices nowadays (plus everything up to 2007 falls into the last cutoff ever in effect, since there was a 10 year minimum)

      I feel mixed about that. I am very much against Batman killing, exept if it's a different interpretation. But I feel like it goes against Batman. He's trying to stop crime and make said criminal's respected citizens. He'd be no better than his parents murderer. But if it's a different interpretation, yeah! No sweat.

    • @aros0018
      @aros0018 6 років тому +9

      I think it depends on how the movie itself handles him killing. In the Burton movies, it's never established he has any problem killing, so the audience doesn't really question it. In the Nolan movies, it goes many times into why he doesn't kill. In BvS, he's more filled with anger and vengeance and thus why he cares less if he kills, but the movie itself at least portrays him being in the wrong for how he's acting, thus why I personally don't mind it as much.

    • @Duothimir
      @Duothimir 5 років тому +5

      @@aros0018 Plus, as someone pointed out on Linkara's review of Batman Returns, in that movie Batman has achieved his vengeance for the death of his parents, and he's started seeing every criminal as just another Joker. Retreating further from humanity, further from his morals, until he's shaken up by the disastrous events at the end of the film. One could see this as the reason he adopts Robin in Batman Forever, as he needs that additional moral anchor by his side... not to mention some real social interaction on those long, cold Gotham nights while he's on patrol.

    • @aros0018
      @aros0018 5 років тому +7

      Exactly. If you're going to have Batman, or really any superhero kill, at least show that there were some consequences to that act and that it did effect them. Both the Keaton and Affleck Batmen became so steeped in their need for vengeance that it took them down some very dark paths, until a sizable enough event happened that shocked them to their senses and made them reevaluate what they were doing and what they'd become. The (apparent) death of Catwoman, one of the only people Bruce had been able to connect with in a long time and whose tragedy was a reflection on himself, and the death of Superman, someone Bruce had completely misjudged in his blinded rage and whose death Bruce was partially responsible for.
      I'm not saying I like want Batman to always be wrong, but I do like stories like these more where he isn't the "Golden perfect, only real superhero" that a lot of other more modern Batman media and stories make him. Having him have flaws and the ability to recognize those flaws within himself and grow is far more interesting than "I'm great because I'm Batman. Everyone else is just a naive fool."

At the same time, toy commercials (from Toy Biz) for toys based on the film we’re airing, and Linkara may have just amalgamated the two in his mind.
