      Anyone who has ever see one knows, they are so cheap they give them away 3 or 4 times a year....but they are still good enough to do simple test. Just goes to show you don't need a Fluke tester to do simple test as ohm load and continuity....

    Thanks, man! I had noise from my bass, but I watched your video and fixed some of my soldering - there wasn't good contact at places. Now my bass is 99% noise free (it still has some but when the volume is at maximum, which is unlikely in my playing.
    Cheers!

    I have a jass bass special with a single coil at bridge , and split coil closer to neck.
    When bridge pick up is engaged and turned up it hums very loudly, then when I touch the metal nobs the hum does down drastically.
    What might the issue be?
    Thank you,

      Usually, that's more the classic case of a loose or poorly connected/soldered ground wire. In most cases when you have that the noise would also quiet down when touch the bridge and likely when you touch the strings. Is that the case?

      @@lowendvibe But would that be within the pickup itself somewhere or the grounding from the pickup to the bridge?
      I tend to lean towards the first, because it's only that particular pole. Although the ones beside it emit noise as well when touched.
      The poles on the other half that is closer to the bridge does not have that problem. I have a P bass, by the way.

    Does the bridge need to be grounded to the pots?

    • @kubicki2000
      @kubicki2000  4 роки тому +2

      Yes. A great way to learn about it is to check out the wiring diagrams on www.seymourduncan.com/ . Choose a bass setup with 1 P bass pickup, volume and tone and you can get an idea of how it is all connected together.

    I've been shielding guitars for a few years now - normally they are quiet but having issues with a jazz bass. I never thought about using the cable to check - great idea. I really don't like the weedy cable touching the bridge on typical jazz bass. Much better connection on a strat.
    That's for giving another perspective on grounding.

    My basses also buzz, especially when I use distortion or flanger. When I touch the strings most of the buzz goes away but not completely. One can also fix this problem by using EQ. I have managed to eliminate up to 80 or 90% of the buzzing I get on my bass guitar when I am using distortion or flanger or any other effects. And I'd like to add that two of my basses are not shielded at all. I use a boss me50b and I'm able to get some killer distortion and flanges sounds out of it without buzz simply by adjusting the EQ and the amount of drive on the distortion. Also by carefully blending which pickup are you using. I found that with a bass guitar using too much of the neck pickup causes an undesirable bass distortion sound due to the low frequencies.

      The only problem I see with using an EQ to clean the noise is that you end up losing harmonics on the bass track in the sound of the bass itself (of course it will only be relevant depending on the sound you are trying to achieve).

    is it possible that mine just occurred out of nowhere? my guitar has also the same problem, when I engage my distortion pedal it is humming louder than the usual but when i touch the strings it becomes louder instead of it going away. when I get the guitar it didnt have this kind of problem, it just occurred out of nowhere.

    You should be checking ohms, not continuity. Set this meter between the 200k and 20k settings, then read the actual ohms. It's much more accurate knowing the level of resistance in your system. If you get a reading between .00 to .03 you have very little resistance in your bass setup. You can have continuity and still have a high level of resistance, which is what you don't want.

    • @js4512
      @js4512 3 роки тому

      The meter said it was in continuity mode, but if you paid attention, it was in ohms mode and counted down to .03 He may not have know a much higher number than that would indicate a probable problem, but he was still doing it right.

    No... you do NOT know all the solder joints are solid. a cold joint does not make continuity.... a wire loose barely removes continuity. that is why you need to meter all connections, but start with obvious ones (new jack? start with its connections first!) ....

    • @js4512
      @js4512 3 роки тому

      Who cares about solder joints when the damn thing is wired wrong? Diagram wiring then check joints.
      Besides this test is so fast, it is well worth doing and gives a definite yes or no on ground issues. Besides
      that, as soon as you open the cover up you can see cold solder joints quite fast....blobby and no flow...Look more like a rat turd and are about as good at hold a wire connection! He did not even replace the jack, just checked the orientation of the ground...which was WRONG!!! This guy did not even watch the whole video.
      Did everyone not see the grey blob of crap denoting someone had replaced wiring and or jack and did a crap job????? Did you not see the tester going down to ,03? It was using continuity!!! as an ohm checker!!
