    Good video especially tying and knots. Last 3 years I have used Mustad quick snaps ilo non slip loop knot for all streamers, leeches and nymphs down to size 14, dependent on hook eye size. Use the smallest one they sell, never had issues catching and no failures. Improved clinch to the snap, and you can change a fly every cast if you want, in seconds. Held up to 30" Bulls and countless 18-24" rainbows and cuts. Worth trying out. Thanks for your vids bud, great work.

      I have been think of trying those. Do they still give enough movement for let's say a soft hackle? That would be great because I change soft hackles like crazy! Thank you for watching

      Everything I have fished with works great, as long as the eye has clearance. If it doesn't move freely in your hand, then it needs the loop knot, some 14's and anything smaller.@@greenhornflyhorn

    Thanks, these are all good, I do every one. A few others, clean your fly line. Also, learn how to make your own fly leaders, and if you already do this, use the off season to make enough extra for the year. Another is make sure to sharpen the hooks on any flies you might have snagged on rocks, etc.

      Great tip! I do follow these as well, hook sharpening is definitely a must(that is if the fly lasts long enough ahaha!)

      Great points. And always check your hook if a fish comes off. I have got anxious and casted out right away only to lose another take and then see my hook bent open a bit!

      I don’t go through a ton of leaders per year. I think the more important part about learning to make leaders is it helps you understand why leaders work. Then you can tailor them to your needs.

    Nice list and I quizzed myself prior to video - all the same things that I thought of. Tying is what has gotten me into the sport the deepest and the one where I can spend hours goofing around on variations. I did have to laugh when you mentioned offseason, no such thing in my neck of the woods. 😃

    Wait a minute... 30 or 40 yards is 90 or 120'! If you're 'Nailin' that", you're a freaking super hero! Where can I sign you up for lessons?

      Ha!! Yeah, but to be honest. That is nothing in the fly casting world. The record is like 240+ feet on a single handed rod btw!! Listen, if i can hit or come close to a soccer ball at a 100ft, i am thrilled with that. The furtherest i ever casted for a fish was 60ft and that I think was too far. These are just exercises to build confidence.
      Just to be clear, casting 20ft under some brush to a rising trout by the bank is way more impressive in my opinion. Thanks for watching 🤙

      I can get the job done pretty well, but to be clear... most dudes have never cast a full line and to create those expectations, in my opinion, is just silly.

    Good advice.... Although, suggesting practicing casting to 40 yards is way overkill. That puts you 20 feet into your backing.
    Not trying to be overly critical, But someone new to fly casting might take that as a distance to strive for and get discouraged out of the sport.

      Great perspective! I would do it from time to time just to see if I can do it. I would never fish that distance but, it teaches me alot about fine tuning my cast. Now I am not an expert but if I can cast 100+ feet and get close to my target. It makes me really really confident! I will make a video on this later this season just to show what I am talking about. I appreciate your comment and take no offense whatsoever. Thank you for taking the time to comment 🙂

    There is no wrist action in fly fishing ? is there ? ,arm action , yes .

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn  5 місяців тому

      Oh absolutely there is wrist action involved in fly casting!! It is subtle but a very big part of casting is having the correct wrist action. Watch Joan Wulff or Steve Rajeff. You will see what I am talking about. Happy fishing 🙂

      Also, a highly recommended video on UA-cam is the Jim Green fly casting video from the 1970’s, done when he was designing rods for Fenwick (“Secrets of fly casting”). In that video, he shows you when to use your wrist. It’s at the end of both the forward cast and the back cast. I am guilty for using a little too much wrist and at the wrong time during the casting motion - this is a common problem if a person fished with a spinning rod for years before learning fly casting.
