Maybe it's just me but this is a weird take. I'm pretty sure this is an Easter Egg for people who supported Atari. Also, there are 4 USB ports on the front you can plug in that joystick plus 3 additional CX sticks. I don't own that controller but I'm not really worried about those 2 games as I'm going to add my own roms anyway.
Exactly my thoughts . You can add what you want anyway . I do have a VCS and the controller so it is a cool Easter Egg just in time for Easter lol . My 400 mini came this morning but I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet . Hopefully there will be an update or a hack for paddle games .
@@MrPoestyle Mine came yesterday but it's technically an Easter gift from my wife so I'm waiting until Sunday. Enjoy man I know I will!
Reminds me of those bootleg handhelds that came with the "100000000 games in 1" cartridge but the games were already on the handheld itself, the cartridge was just there as some sort of strange physical DRM to make it show all the games.
Evercade you had to buy two games to unlock the additional games
If I reckon correctly, Evercade has some hidden games only accessible by inserting two certain cartridges at the same time on the console.
Yeah, I guess the argument people can make is its a bonus for loyalty to the brand or something... I dunno lol. I dont take it too seriously... But I just think its a little weird I guess. With the 400 Mini maybe its not a huge deal because you can just add those games to the system anyway. The Evercade they really designed things around collectors wanting to buy everything, the numbering system, the unlockables etc.. meh whatever I guess lol.
Doesn't seem to be limited to VCS controllers. Both games unlocked by plugging in an 8bitdo pro2 as well as M30 via usb (before booting).
Edit: PS5 & NSO SNES controller unlocks them as well, though the controls don't seem to do anything with the SNES controller.
People just whine about everything.
These people call themsleves journalists...
I think the Turbografx Mini had some secret games, but you didn't have to buy anything extra. I really wish that I could have gotten one of those while they were still selling them.
Unless they release a controller with analogue input that unlocks these, I'll be peeved if I have to import a VCS controller from the US to the UK for 2 hidden games.
Not really I've heard that a other controllers unlock the two extras like PS4 Logitech i think. It's worth playing around with any existing controllers you may have first you could save money. Ime still in two minds about buying it as my A500 mini totally wipes the floor with this.
@@andromedaone3640, so tempted by this and the A500 Mini, but may wait for the Amiga Maxi - hoping it has a numpad, whichever model it's based on.
I just got mine in the mail. Haven't tested it yet. I don't have any paddles but give "Kaboom!" For the A800 a try on it. If my memory of my youth is correct, it used both joystick and paddles.
Those two games need analog controls and the included controller is digital. Also curious if a keyboard would work with that since I'm sure some of the games originally utilized one
They dont need those controls, but thats how its preferred to be played to actually have decent control over things. Can be played with a normal stick. I think they could have done something like the Taito Mini did where they sold special controllers that came with extra games. I dont think its worth trying to buy the VCS controller just for these games, but if you already got one then its cool I guess.
@Madlittlepixel If I'm not mistaken the Atari Flashback 2 also had hidden Atari 2600 games that could only be unlocked by imputing a combination of joysticks movements. Conveniently enough I think they were (more or less) the same games hidden on the Atari 400 mini, Super Breakout and Warlords.
Reminds me how I had to buy metroid fusion, complete it, buy a gba to gamecube cable, and then plugging it into my GC metroid prime unlocked the NES metroid and fusion suit. I actually like that stuff, sure it could have been unlocked in game alone but as someone said its more of a support bonus.
If I recall, both Super Breakout and Castle Crisis (originally called Warlords) required the paddles to play on the 2600. So it makes sense you need a joystick which can tell how much "pressure" you use to go left or right
I really wish they optimized the system's controls to actually support the VCS joystick correctly, feels like they really half assed it's support, hoping later firmware updates improve it eventually. (I'm probably gonna buy this thing for M.U.L.E. either way.)
Oh, and a little hint, In Castle Crisis/Warlords, if you hold the action button and hit the fire ball, you can catch and throw it at others.
Perfect job on the design and packaging. Would love to see a Jaguar mini and Sega Master System mini as well.
That stick is only way to play those hidden games?
Does it work with the Xbox style Atari vcs controller?
I totally agree with your perspective.
I'm on the same page as you.
Maybe if they were to include both Joysticks with the Mini console, this would be nicer.
Sweet! I’m the least able to emulate anything and I managed to get some games working on the 400 mini. Can’t get any driving or racing games to load 😢 but I’ll order this controller and happy days 👍
Good info to know about the spinner with usb roms!
What other USB controllers work with Atari 400 mini? Can I use 8bitdo wireless controllers with dongle? How about C64 Mini controller or Competition Pro USB?
I wonder if there is another way to unlock the extra games without the controller.
You could program something to transmit the usb hwid
Somebody tried with the Atari Gamestation Pro joystick ?
Maybe the Castle Crisis (fixed) has been altered to work without needing a paddle . Maybe an Unfixed rom would work?
You can use ANY controller to unlock these games.
Any controller with analogue sticks :-)
It's driving me nuts that you're not grabbing the fireball. C'mon man!
doesnt even need analog sticks, you can unlock the games with an evercade vs controller
Pixel, which do you like more, Atari 2600+ or the 400 mini?
A better comparison would be the 400 mini and the Atari Gamestation Pro . I have all 3 but I just got my 400 this morning and haven't had a chance to mess with it yet .
Perhaps they get unlocked if you buy the Atari paddles or maybe they are planned for the A400 ?
Genesis mini had secret games in a way if you change the region
The Flashback 2 from way back would give you access to paddle games if you happened to own a set of Atari paddles, which at that time, @games wasn't even selling. As for the hidden mini 400 games? I think it's pretty cool but then I own four classic controllers anyway so no biggie.
The menu within the USB option needs to be updated. It reverts to Atari 800 after each game, even when I set it to 5200. Also, I really dislike that new joystick. It's really hard to use. I tried a 360 controller, which is obviously better but the key mapping is strange.
retro gaming meets modern grifting
Grifting? These games weren't advertised so they are extras for those who bought Ataris VCS 800 console.
It's a bonus for those that decided to get an Atari VCS. I like it.
You can't play those games with a stick.. anywhere. Those are always paddle games. So you can't play em without the special spinner
MLP did u try configuring the controller as paddle when playing the usb games
Nice, Castle Crisis looks like a better version of Warlords for the Atari 2600.
Dont think you can even get that controller in the UK.
So the real question is , should I get one?. I have atar 50 on switch and all the evercade atari carts. Can the Atari controller work on switch?
it's interesting indeed, it should of unlocked more games other then breakout & castle crisis.... wait a sec... why didn't they call castle crisis by it's actual name: warlords (atari 1980)
Because technically this isn't "Warlords" . "Warlords" was Arcade and 2600 only, IIRC. "Castle Crisis" began life in the early 2000s as a self published third party port of "Warlords" for Atari 8 bit computers and 5200. I'm not sure why the developer couldn't or didn't get the rights to the "Warlords" name; but, on this system it's never been known by that name so I guess they've decided to just roll with it here for consistency.
Atari Flashback 2 you had to put in the code 1971 on joystick ( year PONG was made) to play warlords and breakout. You could only use paddle controls to play the games. This is just like it.
I happened to unlock the hidden games using my Super Mario controller on the Atari mini.
It's just a fun easter egg.
You can just download the rom, if you want to play those games.
Plus good luck playing warlords without spinner controls 😂
Edit: you can apparently unlock those games, with other USB controllers.
I think calling it "paid DLC" is a bit hyperbolic
It is what it is,a paid dlc if you have to buy the controller to unlock n play those 2 "extra games".
@@ozzie.l.6035 or you just download the rom of those games?
It's just a fun easter egg.
@@ozzie.l.6035 I think the idea is more the reward people who are super fans of the brand. People who are more likely to have a VCS and aren't people who are just "completionists". Personally, I don't think of it has "Paid DLC" because for 1. it's NOT dlc. There no "download" happening here. 2. a more accurate term I feel is "easter egg". Paid DLC is used by people who are just jaded and cynical about general state of video games. The old man yelling at the clouds so to speak I feel. Same thing MLP says when he calls "Nintendo Switch Online" a "rental program."
Is there a good joy stick for the 400 mini?
It doesn't appear that the controller is currently available...
Second game also on evercade
Pretty crappy that it takes the controller to unlock it. But I really like the system, I want one.
I wouldn't expect most people who buy the Atari 400 mini to know that you can unlock 2 games with another controller. But yeah shame that those 2 games are not already on the console without the extra controller.
Agreed
They should've just gave the extra games to you out of the box.
Or just make them unlockable through gameplay , not with the purchase of another $59.99 ($75 shipped) controller . It's kind of a slap in the face . For that kind of money ($200ish) you can buy a real Atari 400 and an Atarimax flash cart kit .
You can use ANY controller to do this.
@@bryanobrien2726 They didn't advertise Super Breakout and Castle Crisis so these are extra Easter Eggs for those who bought the VCS. I think they are recognizing those who have a VCS.
@@DaveMoorland-zv3tn And which ones have paddles built in ?
@@douglasvanbeynen6825 Or they're just trying to sell extra controllers to the majority of people who bought these who also never bought a VCS . The Easter Egg wasn't hidden very well if any other controller will unlock the games .
Load ROMs off a USB stick instead
Just add the secret games with a USB drive. Not a big deal really.
Nintendo locked dlc behind amibos.
I think the people at Atari are control freaks…
you do not need that to play the games am useing a xbox 360 controller and its showing super breakout
The games are not very playable without the spinner anyhow. As a VCS owner I like the little bonus and show of appreciation just for me. Y’all just a bunch of complainers😮
I think it's pretty sh*tty, you have to buy a new controller to get only two games and then still need the old controller to start the games... Nope.
Easter eggs are not DLC...
The snes classic had you plug your mom's vibrater in and it unlocked doom 64 and concker bad fur day.
🤷♀
Atari still doesn’t get it. They need to load these goddamned things up with way more games and they need proper new paddle controllers and proper paddle controller support, and proper new Trakball controllers and proper Trakball support. None of the new Atari consoles does this. It’s absolutely maddening. Quit f**king around, Atari, and just give us what we want. Quit being so goddamned stingy with the games, and GIVE US PROPER GODDAMNED CONTROLLERS AND PROPER CONTROLLER SUPPORT. Ok, rant over.
God just get it the point
Sorry, I love your channel but the melodramatic titles are getting more and more stupid ("paid DLC 🙄. Please stop that nonsense!
Buy the controller then return it once games are unlocked :)
They dont stay unlocked, they only show when the controller is plugged in on boot up
@Madlittlepixel it's almost like the Egret II Mini. If you wanna play the extra games, you have to plug in the expansion cards they appear in
There’s always the possibility of tricking the system into thinking that, that specific controller is plugged in… Also I’d be interested to see if the games still show up if you reboot the system without the controller plugged in.
