How To Paint Miniatures Fast and Easy - Part 1

- Relicblade: Bone and Darkness is coming to Kickstarter on October 15th 2016. I decided to take a break from the usual work in the studio to put together a little video about how I paint miniatures.
I've always been interested in painting fast and easy. With 20 years experience I run through the simple steps I use to get pretty neat tabletop standard figures with very little effort.
In part one I run through prep, assembly, and priming the figure.
Trying to get into miniatures as a more sustainable way of dealing with work stress. No artistic talent or background whatsoever, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Thank you very much for the incredibly helpful tutorial!
I agree. I've never met a hobbyist who painted more than they owned. So just paint each piece for fun and paint the next one better. :)
Dude it's almost like meditation for me :D
“This little miniature world,” love it
Those gelato containers are so great for painting. I thought I was the only one who noticed their value :)
Hi kitty! This is a great video, thank you for showing your entire process.
LOVE this video have re-watched multiple times - best of all the intro how to paint minis - thanks will be starting to paint my first soon - will rewatch and use your video as my guide
Looks like you might could use some of the Emery Boards. The kind you use for fingernails are really cheap and a good way to get some easy to control sandpaper/abrasive material for cleaning of mold lines and sprue remnants. Of course they work nicer on plastic and resin models but they still work for metal even if they need 'cleaned' (typically by a few swipes across the pants) a bit more often.
Actually learned that watching Adam Savage assemble a kit on Tested.
Also a cheap artist's/painter's spatula works wonderfully for spreading glue.
I love that brand of Gelato. I use mine for paint water and miniature bits storage.
thumbs up!
Loved the video really clear, easy to follow, have subscribed, all the best, Garry
I felt strange when you kept saying that you do this video to teach beginners and that its not an impressive paint job, but i couldnt help to feel excited and confident after watching the video. The end product looked really nice and i was hyped. I have refrained from painting my figures from Infinity because i didnt want to screy up the paint work. But i think i can give it a go. Im just having issues deciding what paints to get. I was thinking of getting the 50 Army Painter paint set honestly
Hey dude. I'm glad you found it helpful! I got a bunch of Army Painter paints and I don't think they're very beginner friendly. I would recommend picking out a P3 starter set. The sets are really well designed for unified color theory. The limited palette will make it easier to make decisions and end up with a nice finished product. I dislike the containers for the P3 paint. but the actual paints and hues are very good. If you dont have a Local Game Store then go on Amazon and search for "Privateer Press formula p3" and pick a set that has a main color that you want for your force (the Khador set will have red for example). Also a GW wash or "shade". Probably black or brown (nuln oil or agrax earthshade). That's my two cents :)
Metal King Studio i used P3 before back when I didnt look up tutorials so the job was basic and bland. I did like the P3s. Hm. Im looking to paint my army with whites, red and purple. Ill have another look thank you for the advice. I appreciate it very much! By the by, what did you mean by GW wash? Im still a newb sorry.
Metal King Studio yeah i just looked around on amazon for specific paints and they dont have much reds or purples haha, even on their actual site they have sold out stuff. What advice if any could you give me about war paint set?? I was planing on buying test figurines to practice on. Anything you can tell me would be great. I read that the paints seperate and need vigorous shaking. Some people even said that metal mixing balls help. Theres much to consider lol
True. I haven't been very happy with the Army Painter paints I have. But I talked to one of their reps at AdeptiCon and he said that it sounds like I got a bad batch. Getting the base colors in P3 and a few colors for accents will be good.
My other recommendation is to buy a model with crisp detail. Reaper Bones models are cheap, but the details tend to be squishy and hard to clean properly. So if you're learning to paint it will just be extra frustration. You want to enjoy bringing the detail out of the sculpt, not struggle to compensate for a smashed face with a mold line down the middle.
GW plastic kits are a little expensive, but you generally get each model for 3-4 dollars. Meaning they're the same cost as Reaper bones by the each. You just have to buy your skeletons (or whatever) 10 at a time. Characters are super expensive though. All that to say. Learning on nicer models will be a lot easier and a lot more fun!
The Games Workshop brand washes. Citadel Shade is the actual name I think. Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade are the main two I use.
Get " nail art" brushes on Amazon-- great for fine details!!
7:37 kitty kitty!!
Another way to prime, especially several models at once, is to stick the models to a piece of cardboard (like from that Amazon box) with blue tac. This will allow you flip the models upside down while spraying them so you can get those "hidden" surfaces.
Back in the early 1990's on a moist warm day, the custom, high priced paint job came off my of opponent's army. All 120 of them, some in his hands, others slid on to the table, it was a goop mees. The owner of the shop know exactly what had happened . Seen it before with that painter.
I try to bend the tab (in the middle) a little so it fits tightly into the slot.
Woah that's my exact same toothbrush!!
This is awkward. I used your toothbrush.
Cool old school look 😁
lmfao... i love that gelato peanut butter chocolate is the best. funny thing i use those container for the same thing after eating. :)
Here for the gelato stayed for the free containers.
I think I'm lactose intolerant and the worst part is no more free containers.
well at least I know what I was doing wrong now when spray painting I was to far away so I had to remove the paint and had my dad spray them thanks for the video I'll try it my self again
I've been spray painting minis for a long time! And I've messed up tons of minis in that time! lol. It takes practice :)
Nice unicorn.
BMC sure has changed his appearance,
What do you use for your model holder (the little wooden thing) looks like it works well.
I used these
www.michaels.com/10367505.html#q=wood+spool&start=1
What kind of paint is that, acrylic? I've never painted a mini before and I don't want to pick up a paint that isnt good for a mini.. It's for Pathfinder/DnD . Also is this kind of paint OK on the pre-assembled unpainted plastic minis?
It is acrylic! It is super light body acrylic, meaning the medium wont leave a texture. I do recommend model paints for mini-painting, but if it's your first figure using craft paints will be fine.
The main consideration of course is that even though model paints will cost more to get started, the better materials will make for a more enjoyable experience. :)
I recently started using "The Army Painter" Paints which are significantly cheaper than Games Workshop mini paints, and I really like them so far! So grabbing a basic set of colors will be easy. Look at the mini and pick out three or four materials that make up most of the model. (like skin, clothing, armor, etc.) and pick out a few neutral colors to get most and a nice bright color for an accent. Like a cool green cape or blue tabard.
Anyway. Let me know if you have any other questions about the hobby. :)
have you use an ultrasonic cleaner? I'm not 100% sure how clean it gets things but it's worth a shot
Leonardo Lee I never have. What is it?
they are designed to clean jewelry from dirt and oil, with a little bit of solvent of soap, theoretically it can strip models of paint and primer, so I'm assuming they also work for removing releasing agent from models
smile.amazon.com/dp/B00HZVYAVM/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475597632&sr=sr-1&keywords=ultrasonic+cleaner
I bet it would work. The release agent comes off really easily and there is usually only a trace amount on there. Dish soap has been enough in the past.
This helped me a lot, thank you so much! Great video! What Kickstarter were you talking about?
My last Kickstarter was in Oct-Nov of last year. It was for a few Relicblade expansions. It went well :)
Metal King Studio Awesome! Is that still something I could contribute to? Do you have things for sale?
I see a Talenti container there. I stock that ice cream 😂😂😂
That's some good gelato.
What's the name of the miniature you're painting and where can i get one like it?
That miniature is the Dark Watcher. It's available at Relicblade.com/shop
would this tutorial still be accurate for a bronze model?
I haven't ever painted a bronze sculpture. Bronze is a somewhat precious metal that is usually better suited for the application of patina. A nice patina will prevent unwanted oxidation by occupying the surface with pretty oxidation. If, however, you choose to paint the bronze sculpture then all of these techniques will work. You may need to polish the surface if there is unwanted oxidation, as this may effect the actual surface of the sculpture.
When will you do another kickstarter??
I'm thinking November.
@@MetalKingStudio 😅 ANY clues of when in Nov. ?? Really looking forward to be part of this. 😊
Those are my exact same water jars! lol
Jason H. Haha. They're great! I use them for plein air painting as well. I can stick them in a backpack sealed and they don't break like glass jars do.
But they have wide mouths so you can dip a brush easy! Plus. Awesome ice cream.
Can't paint without coffee lol.. :)
"2.99, that's more in an artist's budget"

Super glue and baking soda is a great accelerate..makes it strong and very hard
what paint u use?
Cristian Sosa I’ve had the best experiences with Citadel and P3 brands.
when does the video start?
You have to press the triangle symbol in the bottom left corner to start the video.
we have the same exact cleaning toothbrush lol
"How to paint..." 14 mins not an ounce of paint?
I'm not sure I understand this comment. What step do you have questions about?
Bryan Blalack Title clearly states that this is PART 1
„Fast and easy“ - spends 15 minute video with cleaning and assembly. XD
lol. true.
