It was a great experience visiting Black Magic Craft. Had a lot of fun and I did learn a lot about this other type of foam. This visit Inspired me also for 2 more project that might be used within the book we are currently making. Working hard on new scenery, developing new stuff and if Jeremy is ok with it I will visit BMC again in 2020.

Man, there is something really incredible and almost beautiful about 2 people with a ton of knowledge and passion for something, who developed those skills independently, sharing with one another. You can hear it when one describes something and the other just immediately understands, I imagine that doesn't happen too often when you're the expert everybody else looks too for information.

I'm with you. I often see those resin buildings you can buy online and think "Wow, if I had the money they would be awesome to have on the table". But then the crafter in me thinks "Why would I want a building that is going to look exactly the same as the next person that buys it?".
kallisto 91 I think it is only fair and logical to building stuff for your own if you want to do so. That is why I also explained how people can make there own cylinders.
The reason I don't go for the resin kits is they are often cast in 'floor plus walls' and that makes manipulation of interior minis a pain. Also, most are too expensive, and my time is cheap.

Its really cool to see the different ways everyone approaches your type of foam. Although I use a different type of foam than both of you I can appreciate the work you do on your side a bit more now that I can see its not as easy to carve as Gerald's. Of course I can't use those tools at all on EVA but have to depend on an exacto knife, or other methods with heat to give all my texturing. Sometimes, I wish I could just draw out my textures with a pencil and call it a day but I'm apparently too suborn. I'll leave the hard foams to your mastery.
I've been working with foam for a very long time. I too have long believed that the green foam was different based on the results I'd seen and the results I had mirroring the techniques seen. I feel so vindicated now that a trusted direct comparison has been made and a difference being seen. Thanks for that tid bit of info.

This is going to get lost in the 208 comments but here it goes - In the hovercraft groups there were a couple of foams used. The main was the pink/blue. It was used for flotation because it was closed cell, a safety requirement in case the hovercraft stopped hovering. The foam wouldn't suck up water and sink. There were yellow and green foams that were used above the water line because they were open cell. The yellow was a urethane based foam and could be worked using wood tools. A big but - The dust and hotwire smoke was really toxic!!. The green stuff a little softer and was a special order from Menards but Home Depot had it in stock at some stores. This was 10 years. Love the videos. Thanks for making them. Really, thanks.

Honestly, the shipping fees weren't that bad. Mine were only about 25 dollars US which is actually pretty reasonable considering what we're receiving and where they're coming from.

Stumbled upon this video and these very interesting building techniques while searching videos of proxxon tools. Thanks!!!! While I build scale balsa "flying" airplane models, it hurts when they crash, and getting into wooden sailing ship modeling.... A new world opened, plus more tools to buy, which I like. I started working in terrain building with xps foam a couple of years ago, and since then i've bought in different colours, sizes and forms, but it was always the same foam (im from Spain so it is the German one). I have never known why it was absolutely different the way the xps foam behaves with the same techniques that you or other similar channels of the US use, and since then I have looked for information that helps me identify the problem and the differences between the european and the US foam. This is EXACTLY what I needed without knowing it so thank you guys, this is a real treasure for me hahahaha. BTW still waiting the day I can have one of those pink foam layers in my hands

What an amazing idea to have an amazing artist as a guest. This became one of my favorite videos about terrain crafting. I hope you bring more guests in future videos. Gerard's skill is insane and this video made me want to try his style. The rolls seem to be insanely useful and I like that the texture on them is deep. As expected the result is incredible.
There's always something new to learn and this is good food for thought. That said GB is doing really a great job with his shop and I've become now one of his customers as with his tools and accessories it's always a great deal of fun.
It's great to watch two professionals exchange their experiences with materials and tools. This was so encouraging and enlightening. I know now, why I'm sometimes struggling with some of the techniques shown on this channel (I'm from Germany and use the harder type of foam).
Well one thing I can say for sure is that there are some very high density foams in germany. We wrap the insulation all around the house from every direction . So basically the foundation of my basement and (therefore my entire house) is a layer of foam. So I am sure this type of foam cannot have any give and must be very resistant to pressure since my house is standing on it. P.S.: Great video. Awesome seeing two of my craft idols in one video.
There are a lot of craters using foam, and a lot of videos about foam crafting. Honestly I think this is the first video ever I have seen where one goes into details between different kinds of foam. Very informative! And I think people meeting from different parts of the world like this is helping foam crafters everywhere.

Hey man. Here, Quebec City, I found out Home Depot has some Yellow/Beige foam, 2'' thick that is harder/Denser and even a bit heavier and has the same features as the green Euro Foam. Check it out. it's not on the Store floor, it's in the back and more for renovation dudes than for us average Joes. A bud who was re doing the underside of his Chalet told me he kept some Foam for me. And I was glad to see this new thing ! Hard Awesome Foam. Now I can't go without it. Check it out. I hope you see this !

For hard foam, look into exterior insulation foam (EFIS). When I was a stucco plasterer we would coat walls in hard foam blocks that might be usable for you.

Oh cool this is awesome. I live in Germany and it is hard to find the pink foam, but there is lots of this other type of foam. I assumed the only difference was colour, but was worried about working with it. This video was extremely helpful in helping me understand the available material. What a great idea for a video! So often videos in North America are a bit silo'd off from stuff in Europe, and I really like that Jeremy makes an effort for his European fans.

Found your channel the other day and wanted to try some of the builds. Being a tile installer, I work with a foam board called Kerdi board to build shower walls, etc. I always have remnants left over and thought I'd experiment. It's made by Shluter, a German company, so I figure it's close to the same foam Gerard is using. It does have a waterproof fabric layer that I had to peel off first, but no biggie. It worked amazingly for everything I created! I used a pen for my brick and wood designs and it took hardly any effort to imprint the designs. You can purchase it from Home Depot....but it's pretty expensive, ( usually $100 for a 4'x8' sheet of half inch.) It comes in 1/4 inch, 1/2, and 2 inch thickness. Now I have an infinite supply of free remnants to craft amazing settings for D&D, war games...anything. Shluter also makes an adhesive that fits a caulk gun called Kerdi fix. It's made specifically to attach the foam board together...and let me tell you, It's strong stuff! I use it in construction in the place of Liquid Nails. Just thought I'd chime in and tell you thanks for the ideas. Keep up the good work!
I’m an ex contractor that did high end renovations (before UA-cam). I’ve done MANY Schluter based shower installs (actually specialized in barrier free showers) so I know Kerdi board very well 🙂 I actually never bothered using it for crafting though, and thinking about it, it’s a good option if you have cut offs. Way too expensive vs XPS to buy just for crafting though. Cheers!

I bought a wire cutting from here last year and I haven’t been able to use it much since I’ve moved to a different state. But now that I’m settled I’m gonna be at it again. Keep it up 💜
This comparison of foams is probably the best video you made. We really live in different countries, and have different materials. Like me for example. I have never seen pink foam in my life. And thinnest that I can get is 30mm and thickest is 100mm I believe. Great video and very informative!! And Prost to Gerard ;-)
Was it just me or did this video have more energy? Seemed like Gerard’s visit was really inspirational to Jeremy and the dynamic was really great between them. Felt like some of that energy was shared while watching this video! All the information seemed to come through loud and clear. Again, it might just be my perception, but this seemed to put some of the old excitement and energy in you Jeremy. PVC + 20 hours of straight etching with the Dremel, because I have absolutely no ability to just stop in the middle of a dang project, and I'll have my wife and 3 year old wondering if I died in the craft room. Great video, awesome collab!

I started working in terrain building with xps foam a couple of years ago, and since then i've bought in different colours, sizes and forms, but it was always the same foam (im from Spain so it is the German one). I have never known why it was absolutely different the way the xps foam behaves with the same techniques that you or other similar channels of the US use, and since then I have looked for information that helps me identify the problem and the differences between the european and the US foam. This is EXACTLY what I needed without knowing it so thank you guys, this is a real treasure for me hahahaha.
BTW still waiting the day I can have one of those pink foam layers in my hands

Gerard's skill is insane and this video made me want to try his style. The rolls seem to be insanely useful and I like that the texture on them is deep. As expected the result is incredible.
There's always something new to learn and this is good food for thought. That said GB is doing really a great job with his shop and I've become now one of his customers as with his tools and accessories it's always a great deal of fun.
It's great to watch two professionals exchange their experiences with materials and tools. This was so encouraging and enlightening. I know now, why I'm sometimes struggling with some of the techniques shown on this channel (I'm from Germany and use the harder type of foam).

Well one thing I can say for sure is that there are some very high density foams in germany. We wrap the insulation all around the house from every direction . So basically the foundation of my basement and (therefore my entire house) is a layer of foam.
So I am sure this type of foam cannot have any give and must be very resistant to pressure since my house is standing on it.

There are a lot of craters using foam, and a lot of videos about foam crafting. Honestly I think this is the first video ever I have seen where one goes into details between different kinds of foam. Very informative! And I think people meeting from different parts of the world like this is helping foam crafters everywhere.

Hey man. Here, Quebec City, I found out Home Depot has some Yellow/Beige foam, 2'' thick that is harder/Denser and even a bit heavier and has the same features as the green Euro Foam. Check it out. it's not on the Store floor, it's in the back and more for renovation dudes than for us average Joes. A bud who was re doing the underside of his Chalet told me he kept some Foam for me. And I was glad to see this new thing ! Hard Awesome Foam. Now I can't go without it. Check it out. I hope you see this !
His technique is a lot like leather stamping in that he creates bevels and textures in the surface of the foam! Nice!!!!
I've haven't worked with foam yet, but I was already enthralled and fascinated within the first 5 minutes. Another great video!

For hard foam, look into exterior insulation foam (EFIS). When I was a stucco plasterer we would coat walls in hard foam blocks that might be usable for you.

Oh cool this is awesome. I live in Germany and it is hard to find the pink foam, but there is lots of this other type of foam. I assumed the only difference was colour, but was worried about working with it. This video was extremely helpful in helping me understand the available material. What a great idea for a video! So often videos in North America are a bit silo'd off from stuff in Europe, and I really like that Jeremy makes an effort for his European fans.

Found your channel the other day and wanted to try some of the builds. Being a tile installer, I work with a foam board called Kerdi board to build shower walls, etc. I always have remnants left over and thought I'd experiment. It's made by Shluter, a German company, so I figure it's close to the same foam Gerard is using. It does have a waterproof fabric layer that I had to peel off first, but no biggie. It worked amazingly for everything I created! I used a pen for my brick and wood designs and it took hardly any effort to imprint the designs. You can purchase it from Home Depot....but it's pretty expensive, ( usually $100 for a 4'x8' sheet of half inch.) It comes in 1/4 inch, 1/2, and 2 inch thickness. Now I have an infinite supply of free remnants to craft amazing settings for D&D, war games...anything. Shluter also makes an adhesive that fits a caulk gun called Kerdi fix. It's made specifically to attach the foam board together...and let me tell you, It's strong stuff! I use it in construction in the place of Liquid Nails. Just thought I'd chime in and tell you thanks for the ideas. Keep up the good work!
I’m an ex contractor that did high end renovations (before UA-cam). I’ve done MANY Schluter based shower installs (actually specialized in barrier free showers) so I know Kerdi board very well 🙂
I actually never bothered using it for crafting though, and thinking about it, it’s a good option if you have cut offs. Way too expensive vs XPS to buy just for crafting though.

What an amazing experience, I'm happy for you getting a face to face with Gerard. It must have been a wealth of crafting (mostly foam) knowledge. I really hope that in a future video we can see some BMC spins on the Hard Foam technique that Gerard is talking about.

I bought a wire cutting from here last year and I haven’t been able to use it much since I’ve moved to a different state. But now that I’m settled I’m gonna be at it again. Keep it up 💜

This comparison of foams is probably the best video you made. We really live in different countries, and have different materials. Like me for example. I have never seen pink foam in my life. And thinnest that I can get is 30mm and thickest is 100mm I believe.

Was it just me or did this video have more energy? Seemed like Gerard’s visit was really inspirational to Jeremy and the dynamic was really great between them. Felt like some of that energy was shared while watching this video! All the information seemed to come through loud and clear. Again, it might just be my perception, but this seemed to put some of the old excitement and energy in you Jeremy.
