I've been a cyclist my whole life, was a roadie for ~10 years (and still have my bike) but now switching to mtb for the next ~10 years hahha. I really liked this saying a fellow mtb said on the trails one my first times going to VK. "If you only ride road, you have legs but no soul; and if you only ride mtb you have soul but no legs." anyway- thank you for supporting the trails and happy riding!

I started riding in '92 on a handful of unofficial trails- Snapper Creek, FIU North woods, Amelia and a couple at VK made by Gary Cole, a custom frame painter (and friend of Frenchie's). Then Cat 5 Hurricane Andrew came through and leveled everything. Literally. Everything. I lived in The Grove, over half the trees were gone. But like VK and Irma, all the trails came back better with the collection of park trails we have today... Now if this week of rain will just stop, I'll go riding my Jeffsy!
Haha Yes, thank you again! I actually live in SoMi and ride Snapper Creek over to Matheson all the time : ) And yeah.. I'm loving the Jeffsy! The rain needs to stop for sure. Everything is so flooded! :(
yup i remember that huricane. i started mountain biking right around that time. completly changed the trails but i feel like it gave it a new life.

Virginia Key is such a great place to ride a bike. I found it by pure coincidence… wanting to rent a kayak I found out there is bike rental, and before you know it I was hooked on the mtb!! Anyone by the area should come visit the park!!

Great video. Frenchy is a great guy. I would suggest Amelia Park, Oleta River Park and Markham Park here in S Florida. Central Florida you have Alafia State Park and Balm Boyette Scrub Reserve. Up north Santos. Good luck.

@@eastcoasttrailblazer There is also a night ride at another local SoFlo trail, Markham in Sunrise, that happens every first Wed of the month. (in the Fall/Winter months)

Next park quiet water after they finish to rebuilt the trails! Will be almost same story’s well, was rebuilt after Wilma, and now for the 2nd time after a pipe line! They are almost done ✅ you should check that.

This is the best Mountain Biking Trail history / review I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen thousands of videos so yea ! Great work ! Thanks for making this. I finally have video to share with friends and family that just “don’t get it”. Give Amelia a plug if you could. Those guys really do a lot of work with little support. They also had a Hurricane Irma recovery story that was pretty brutal. Thanks

The main contacts I remember for them during that time were two brothers Frank and Stephen LaRue (might be misspelled). Also Marco Tarafa, Gery Dominguez were also out there. Magnificent my friend! thank you for highlighting us like that..! I do always get laughed at when I mention MTB here, just like Frenchie said, and I do always go back at them: It is not a DH discipline, but as a MTB trail is a hidden gem..!

Great video! It’s so cool seeing the history of the park documented so well! Boy do I miss those pre-Irma trees 🥲 Indeed Irma put VKBC in a bad spot but they came back stronger than ever. VK wasn’t much compared to other parks SFL parks before but now it’s my favorite and arguably one of the best.
