the bike could be one of those high-quality and expensive one, probably made of carbon and all that stuff that can take all those shakes and thumps from certain height.
I road it about 40 years ago no suspension no GPS no real trail markers, the occasional cairn just a basic description from one of the pioneers. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Four of us rode the Portal trail by Full moon with no front lights, 2 of us had tail lights so we rode following 2 red lights...this was NOT by choice the guide (a friend of a friend ) got us lost and we got caught out..... a 9am start we should have been done by 2....luckily we had food and water just never thought we would need lights...it was the most amazing and scary ride of my life and something i do not recommend doing but i'll never forget it !!!
I have a friend who did a trail half this intense. He was by himself, crashed, lost consciousness, and woke up 2 hours later when somebody saw him. This was 3 years ago. He has not been able to get on a bike since.
I rode Portal in about '98. I think back then, you rode up the atv slicrock trail, Poison Spider, then down Portal. Once I walked past the 'death' spot, I had one of the most amazing rides in over 30 years of mt biking. I couldn't believe how dialed and in the zone I was as I ripped down all that rocky stuff. To this day, not sure what got into me, but my steel hardtail and I felt like world cup champs.
Yeah I did that exact route on my hard tail back in the day. That was the whole thing about riding on dangerous technical stuff, you have to have total concentration and everything else just disappears. Went back a couple of times, last time was on a Turner 5 spot, pure heaven.
It is a near-death experience. The little yellow sign around the middle days to dismount since people have died at that section. Personally I would be annoyed if I was that guy who was dismounted and this rider flies by 1-2 feet from the cliff edge right from behind me. You hit one rock wrong and that can be it for your life.
I almost sh!t my heart out when you dropped off that rock ledge (16:50) and rode straight ahead and came to a dead stop on another kill you ledge. Awesome!
Insane riding - I was glued to the screen for the entire trail. You have become one AMAZING rider Brian. I'm speechless. Please warn people that try to emulate you how thin the line is between death and having an epic time. Kudos.
The fact that you were that many miles in before you reached Portal, then dominated it that hard, and said you didn't see how that was an expert line while going through that level of jank Blows My Mind!
I discovered the MTB in 1995. I have noticed since finally upgrading to a new MTB after 20 years that the trails are all made for/by 26 inch wheel bikes. Much harder to use my 29er on lots of the switchbacks and of course those mile wide bars! But, after a few rides I was smiling ear to ear. It is like rediscovering the sport! Upgrading from a 1998 GT Zaskar LE to a 2022 Specialized Sworks EVO PRO is mind blowing. Ride to Live, Live to Ride.
Me too. But there are videos on youtube of people doing this kind of stuff who died subsequently, e.g. Caminito del rey sony handycam. That guy finally fell on some other climb. At some point in time taking more and more risk will kill you for sure.

I absolutely love how enthusiastic you are and how much you enjoy MTB. As someone who’s just bought a MTB it’s really uplifting and encouraging. However, I’d be on the floor crying my eyes out within about 20 seconds of being on that portal. I was terrified sitting on my sofa watching it
I can even tell just through the video how good you've gotten riding trails, balls of steel on those cliff edges....riding right up to the edge straight on and braking....no joke my palms are sweaty writing this, even hate to admit I squirmed and looked away at some parts along Portal....scenery is UNREAL though, keep it up and be careful out there!
Wow, these trails are absolutely incredible ........ My hat goes off to you for being able to ride these. Hopefully I can make it out West to ride one day. 👍
Brian, I've been an avid viewer for about 5-6 years now but I did wain in my regularity for a few years just recently (had a big off left me a quadriplegic and had some healing to do). But you keep posting content like that again and I'll be here to see it like clock work. Thank you.
I'm not going to lie, that looked amazing, terrifying and not much fun. Your riding technique is incredible! I'd have been carrying my bike across several bits that you made look easy to go up and down. Incredible trail and the scenery is stunning! Thanks for sharing!
Southern UT has a reputation for being terrifyingly beautiful in that it is ridiculously stunning to look at, but doing so is likely to get your dead in someway or another. :D
What amazes me more is not that the guy is riding along the edge of a cliff, but with what enthusiasm and excitement he passes every obstacle. He is absolutely focused on the road and, combined with his skills, this allows him to drive quickly and efficiently even on the edge of a cliff, overtaking another hurried cyclist. If he sees an opportunity to drive better, he takes a bike and drives through the site again. The crazy rocks he's riding on are really impressive. This is an exorbitant level of off-road driving. I am very inspired by such people.
I think yu'd like it, it would a lomgway tho. I've dirt biked some remote trail and just when I thought it couldnt get any further into nowhere, there'd be hikers. This one old man, all 6 ft 3" of him, had no pack, no water and had a robe on. Looked just like Jesus Chjrist in movie. Purposely striding up. I was freaked out, wasnt sure if I was seeing it right. When I got back to the cabin, I was l;oking the map over.... there was an access trail not 6 miles to the bottom. Never noticed it before.

I hear you, I rode Moab back in like 1997, I don’t remember the portal trail but did ride slick rock of course. I went back last year and rode Cpt Ahab, love that trail!
Well said sir... We did it the year before(1st wk of November '93) and I recall feeling like we were breaking trail on the section along the highway at the end😊 Man-o-man... 30 years ago😉
The quality of your adventures are superior. Your personality and the way you narrate a trail is amazing. I like your videos and I feel I can learn some skills by just watching. I would never do that Mohab ride as I’m 66 years old and I only have a few years left and I don’t want to cut it short. Ha ha. I would check out the megavalanche guys too. That shit is nuts, but in a slightly different way since they fly through snow from the top of mountains as well
@@Lootroq That race is absolutely nuts. Not at the technical level of the Portal trail but just the sheer length, number of riders and speed of it makes it super crazy.

This was my first "ride-along on a trail bike" video. OMG, that was AWESOME !!! I don't ride, but for me, that was an intense adventure !!! Thanks for this video, Gentlemen... really cool.
Brian must have zero fear of heights! That’s too much for me. I can’t get that close to the edge of cliffs, even on my own 2 feet. Anyway great vid. Thanks for taking us on the ride that I will probably never experience otherwise. 🙏🏻
I love that you bike Utah so much. You might as well claim residency here in Southern Utah so that you feel at home each time you ride here. Love the videos, stay safe and have fun.
Thanks for taking me on one of my favorite rides. Been off the bike and out of the country for almost two years and it was almost like I was right there with you. Great video work. Great riding.
Man, I rode the Slick Rock trail over Moab year ago that that was at the very top of my ability. Was an absolute joy and nightmare to get through that, a huge rush. This... damn. Well done. That trail looks dangerous even for walking in some places. There's no two ways about it, Southern UT, especially the Moab area, is out of this world beautiful and crazy.
I’m a rider myself and done few trails that didn’t go so well overall,,little beat up. I totally understand how difficult some are but never in my life would I ever attempt that ,I have the HIGHEST RESPECT for your bravery and challenges you look for,,can’t say enough how amazing it was to watch, the view was also totally awesome as well,I will carry this one with me on my travels.cheers to your riding partner as well,,,good luck finding next adventure
great skill sets!!! rode the portal twice and it never gets easier. hahah..started from the poison spider trailhead. no easy route to get there ...super video.👍👍🍾🍾
I physically could ride this trail but with my stress and anxiety I could never. I would definitely fall and also would definitely need better suspension. Sick ride man
I show these biking videos to my son at dinner to distract him and it works great but after watching this video I see why. This is intense. Nice work man.
Really nice riding. Definitely the most gut-wrenching Moab video I have seen. Thank you for sharing: This is as close as I will ever get to that trail!
This is the first MTB video I ever saw and I've been hooked ever since. Also started riding myself. No downhilling yet xD But we'll get there. Love content like this!
You’re a wicked ass rider my man. Good content. Love how you enjoy the sport so much, you can tell by your commentary and reactions on trail you love mountain biking. Such a sick hobby, cant wait to shred this weekend.
I watched this while riding the exercise bike. I swear I stopped pedaling a few times during Portal out of fear and didn’t even realize I was doing it.
I’m pretty sure we were in Moab Jeepin’ when you guys were there filming this. Moab is amazing no matter how you experience it. Would highly recommend Falcon Flow for a shorter trail that’s really fun. I’d call it a blue.
BKXC, you're getting fast and skilled! It's funny how everybody has strong points that they tend to diminish, this trail is every bit 3x Black for technical riding. And, you're just a really great technical rider. 6 foot drops with decent landings are cake compared to what you did on Portal.
@@SuperChuckRaney yeah until you pedal strike or catch your bar on a rock or limb/tree, lots of variables to think about, none of which are worth risking your life over. I’m sure it’s not that deadly but me it’s more about knowing that exposure is right there next to you.
This was your first run down down portal and you were able to tackle some of those lines so naturally. Your reaction timing and line choice is nuts. How do you carry balls that big up that high?
Oh my god I loved this video but you GOTTA stop riding up on edges like that and braking at the last minute. It's only a matter of time before a mechanical failure causes something really bad. Please walk up to the edge if you want to go there!! That's so dangerous! D:
Awesome Video! I saw my Uncle Nose Manual on the Cliff Edge after the Dismount sign, he was a psycho. My Brother Cleared the whole Portal, but he was a trial rider with crazy good balance.
This got my anxiety up, my god. I’ve enjoyed seeing how you’ve progressed as a rider throughout the years but I’m a little concerned about the pure cockiness displayed on this ride. Dude, you came up to a sign that said “DISMOUNT NOW” and you blew threw it only until you reached an obstruction. The complete disregard for safety is concerning especially for the kids who watch your videos. I get it… you were in the groove and high off endorphins but you’re not just some random Joe out riding. You almost have half a million subscribers and many impressionable minds watching. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying don’t ride double blacks with massive exposure. I just think you’re undercutting the possibly of actually dying on a trail like this with actions like this.
He commented on the danger of the trail throught the video, even mentioning the underskilled and unprepared riders, and how the trail was potentially deadly. He commented the whole time on the trail's difficulty. And, if you didn't notice, he both stopped, as well as backed off and rolled in (short smash cut) through the dismount sign as well as slowed down or stopped on any sections he needed to.
as crazy as it is to drive down there, im mostly impressed that there was someone before this, finding, marking, building, trying the trail!

you know it's good when the palms get sweaty just watching... makes me wanna ride that trail again!
Awesome riding! Your technical climbing skills are next level! 🤘
Even when I was riding 40 or 50 times a season, Portal is at least 2 levels above my pay grade - Nice Job!
I did it on a unicycle back when it was just a goat trail. Beautiful piece of the earth. Glad you got to experience it!
1. Getaway 2. Bull Run 3. Great Escape 4. Little Canyon (very short section) 5. Gold Bar 6. Gold Bar Rim 7. Portal
That's the 7!
Having done this myself I have the upmost respect for you now. Great stuff.
The angles landing of mountain bike trails. Looks gnarly!
Haha, thanks!!
Oh my word., I couldn't watch by the cliff. I was terrified. Skills. Strength. Courage. Oh my word.
This is one of those trails that once you've done it you can take a little while off, you're gonna need
It has been so much fun to watch your skill evolve over the years. Goals! You are a tech junkie and I love it.
great skill sets!!! rode the portal twice and it never gets easier. hahah..started from the poison spider trailhead. no easy route to get there ...super video.👍👍🍾🍾
"Take the Wheel Lord" 🤣 Insane stuff right there B, Grt Job 💯
thanks for putting so much energy and work into these videos
Dam I wouldn't walk that trail let alone balls out like that, mad respect!
Props on making through that trail safely . It looks super intense
.
The amount of cajones and skill is off the charts, good stuff!
I've never seen anything like this in my life 😳 God bless you every turn you take! It was exciting watching!
The trail looks both super exciting and scary at the same time 🔥 - greetings from Germany!
Oha einfach Toffer 😂
@@cockroach9802 😃👋🏻
Der toffer hier haha 🤣🤣🤣
I’m pretty sure we were in Moab Jeepin’ when you guys were there filming this. Moab is amazing no matter how you experience it.
Would highly recommend Falcon Flow for a shorter trail that’s really fun. I’d call it a blue.
i was borderline freaking out the entire time this is insane
Bruh, even when you lose control, you remain in control....respect.
I wouldn't even walk that. LOL
Cycling on the moon never looked better!nice work!
BKXC, you're getting fast and skilled! It's funny how everybody has strong points that they tend to diminish, this trail is every bit 3x Black for technical riding. And, you're just a really great technical rider. 6 foot drops with decent landings are cake compared to what you did on Portal.
yu sak
whos watching in 2024
I'm 😅
Me
September!!

Those who were here and still alive
With all due respect, you, sir, are OUTTA YER FLAMING MIND! Nice work!😎👍
I'm so happy that I live here in Moab Utah with my red rocks! The La Sal mountains in the background is also so beautiful.
I found myself leaning to the right several times watching this
About gave me a heart attack at 7:35. Dang dude. Your skills progression is something else.
That trail looks insane and scary, probably one of the few I’ll never try, I just can’t get over the cliff on the side. Hangover maybe, portal, nope!
That's called expopsure. You get used to it, just keep remembering you only need 3 inches to clear the tire and keep looking ahead, not down.
@@SuperChuckRaney yeah until you pedal strike or catch your bar on a rock or limb/tree, lots of variables to think about, none of which are worth risking your life over. I’m sure it’s not that deadly but me it’s more about knowing that exposure is right there next to you.
You are a solid rider and that is some of the best GoPro footage I have seen.
I can hear the bike shouting "Please stop, ouch.... come on!!! wtf" 🤪- awesome video! fair play
This was your first run down down portal and you were able to tackle some of those lines so naturally. Your reaction timing and line choice is nuts. How do you carry balls that big up that high?
@16:52 my balls dropped 🤣🤣
FR
Oh my god I loved this video but you GOTTA stop riding up on edges like that and braking at the last minute. It's only a matter of time before a mechanical failure causes something really bad. Please walk up to the edge if you want to go there!! That's so dangerous! D:
Awesome Video! I saw my Uncle Nose Manual on the Cliff Edge after the Dismount sign, he was a psycho. My Brother Cleared the whole Portal, but he was a trial rider with crazy good balance.
Incredible climbing in techy spots. While giggling. Legend
Hey look, it’s the fun police.
That's an enormous 'nope' from this chicken :-) But wow, I can't even imagine living close to this spectacular environment! Breathtaking.
Im beyond impressed. Im an armchair adventurer and haven't ridden a bike in 20 years. thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The way you handle your bike was amazing to watch, but also quite stressed. Respect!
You are an amazingly talented rider! Thanks for sharing your ride with us❤️
Great trip you guys are hero’s but definitely crazy as hell. I dont think there is anything that you guys can’t do. Be safe
